4 What is a Third Space? Ray Oldenburg is an urban sociologist who writes about the importance of informal public gathering places. In his book, The Great Good Place, Oldenburg demonstrates why these gathering places are essential to the community and public life. According to Oldenburg, these third places are public places that allow for individuals to interact with each other in an informal, playful, relaxed setting. For example, Oldenburg describes informal gathering places as cafes, pubs, bookstores, community centers, and main streets. With this in mind, these third places can be used for a multitude of things such as business meetings, a place to hold a relaxed conversation with friends and family, or a quiet place to read a book. Thus, the third place is not your home (the first place) or your work (the second place), instead it is that third place that promotes social equality by leveling the status of guests, providing a setting for grassroots politics, creating habits of public association, and offering psychological support to individuals and communities. The approach Downtown Green Bay, Inc and Olde Main Street, Inc. have taken is to gather these third spaces for you at the tip of your fingers!
