2 Come onboard Why join us? We all know that milk is great for growing kids and at Fonterra we are committed to making sure that all our primary school students get plenty of it. Our Fonterra Milk for Schools Programme delivers delicious, nutritious milk free to primary schools around the country. We re already in 70% of New Zealand schools and we d love you to join us! Fonterra Milk for Schools is all about bringing healthy nutritous milk to Kiwi kids, to help them get the best start in life. Together with our 10,500 farmers, Fonterra can make a difference to the health of all New Zealand primary school students through the Fonterra Milk for Schools Programme. We welcome all New Zealand primary schools to join. Your school will receive: 2 Anchor Lite UHT milk delivered free to your school, a serving for every student, every school day Free recycling bins, liner bags and a regular service to collect your empty milk packs A free fridge to chill the milk Help to get the programme up and running in your school, including a visit from a Fonterra School Liaison Representative New Zealand Dietary Guidelines recommend school students consume at least two to three servings of milk or dairy each day Milk contains many of the nutrients essential for healthy growth and development We recognise your commitment to the education of Kiwi kids and we want to support teachers by helping students develop positive habits, boost stamina and attention, and help them grow into healthy adults 3
3 About milk We provide schools with Anchor Lite milk which has been put through the UHT process. This means it s been sterilised by being heated for an extremely short period. This gives it a typical shelf life of six to nine months until opened, while containing the same level of protein, carbohydrates and calcium found in fresh milk and it s 98.5% fat free. Milk provides a unique combination of nutrients essential for a child s growth and development, including calcium for building bones and the nutrients they need for sustained energy, concentration and learning in the classroom. 4 How the Programme works 1. Apply Schools complete the online application form at apply 2. Contact One of our team will get in touch to take you through the Programme and how it works. 3. Visit Our team, along with your local Anchor Milkman, will visit your school to explain the details of the Programme and check accessibility, where to deliver your milk and collect the recycled milk packs. 6. Recycling Recycling is an important part of the Fonterra Milk for Schools Programme. Your Anchor Milkman will collect the empty milk packs from the large recycling bins we provide when new supplies are delivered. See page 9 for furthur details. 4. Delivery Your fridge will arrive, then your first batch of milk will get delivered by your Anchor Milkman, ready for you to load into your free milk fridge. 5. Drinking time It s important to allocate a time for students to drink the milk each day. See tips on page 8 for suggestions. 7. Updates To help us run the Programme we ask participating schools to keep us updated with the number of students participating. 5 Tips to get things running smoothly Recycling Fonterra Milk for Schools takes recycling and environmental awareness seriously in fact, you could say we re passionate about it. We pass that passion onto students, helping them to learn about recycling and how we can all make a difference for our environment. Here are a few suggestions from other schools participating in Fonterra Milk for Schools to help you get things running smoothly in your school. > Fonterra will provide free recycling bins, liner bags and a regular service to collect your empty milk packs > Your students will need to correctly prepare the empty milk packs and place them in the allocated recycling bin for collection Tip 1: Appoint a Co-ordinator > Simple folding instructions are provided to all schools when they join the Programme Schools are busy places. Designating someone (who is not the Principal) as your Fonterra Milk for Schools Co-ordinator makes the Programme much easier to manage for a lot of schools. Tip 2: Serve the milk during class time Most schools have discovered that serving the milk during class time is much easier to manage and oversee the recycling. You may need to trial a couple of different times to find what works best for your school, but recommended times include: before morning tea, after fitness, or after lunch break. Tip 3: Select Milk Monitors Depending on the size of your school, you may want to appoint a Milk Monitor or two for each class. It s a great way to give students some responsibility. They can collect the milk from the fridge, hand it out, and return any leftover milk packs to the fridge when finished. Selecting a couple of students to stack the fridge can also speed things up. Tip 4: Make recycling easy All schools are required to recycle the empty packs. Some schools get students to each take their empty flattened packs to the recycling bin when finished. Other schools get their students to drop their flattened milk packs into a container in the classroom, then one student has the job of taking it to the recycling bin. Being a Milk Monitor can help students improve their counting, maths and leadership skills. There are no rules about when you serve milk to your students but we do require that: Milk is chilled before serving Milk is consumed on school grounds it can t be taken home Milk packs are correctly prepared for recycling 8 Every single piece of the pack is recycled and put to good use the cardboard is turned into paper for books for other students to read from or write on, while the foil and plastic is made into roof tiles for houses. 9
6 FAQs How many days per week do we serve milk to students? Fonterra will supply the milk you need to your serve your students every school day, if you choose to. Our school is a full primary, intermediate or composite school. Can all our students take part in the Fonterra Milk for Schools Programme? While it would be great to open the Programme to students of all ages, the Fonterra Milk for Schools Programme is only open to New Zealand primary schools. What about students that are lactose intolerant or have a milk allergy? Fonterra Milk for Schools is a voluntary programme, so your school will need to set up a process for identifying and managing students who can t or don t wish to drink milk. How can we engage parents and other stakeholders in the decision making process? You may choose to advise parents in your school newsletter. We will also provide you with a participation form so that parents can choose whether or not their children take part in the Programme. Where should we place the fridges to work within our school environment? Fonterra will supply a fridge to your school for the purpose of chilling the milk at no charge. We recommend placing the fridge in a location where the students have limited access. Some schools place the fridge in their staff room to ensure the milk is only accessible during the allocated milk drinking times. Where should we store the milk and how much room will be required? The milk will be delivered in cases of 24 packs, weighing approximately 6kg each. The packs can be stored at room temperature anywhere that s convenient until the best before date shown on the packaging. They must always be chilled before serving. 10 What is UHT milk? UHT means Ultra-High Temperature processing. This sterilises the milk by heating it for an extremely short period. Fonterra Milk for Schools uses Anchor Lite milk which is put through the UHT process. UHT processing means that the milk does not have to be kept refridgerated during transport or storage. Does UHT milk provide the same nutritional value? Yes, it contains the same levels of protein, carbohydrates and calcium found in fresh milk. If we join Fonterra Milk for Schools will we still get milk delivered for our students who participate in KickStart Breakfast? Yes. There will be no change to the KickStart Breakfast Programme. Fonterra Milk for Schools operates alongside the KickStart Breakfast Programme because it is intended for all New Zealand primary school students, providing milk as an additional nutritional boost to their day. 11
