1 Revised modules for use from September 2006 (first certification June 2007) SKILL AREA HOME MANAGEMENT INTRODUCTORY GRADE FIRST GRADE MODULE 1 Use cooking skills Select and use equipment for cooking MODULE 2 Prepare a drink and snack Select and cook a simple meal MODULE 3 Use shopping facilities Plan and carry out shopping activities MODULE 4 Take part in preparing food for an event Select, plan and prepare food for an event MODULE 5 Carry out household tasks Complete household tasks using appliances
2 Home Management Module 1 Use cooking skills Using a range of different cooking skills (for example, slicing, grating, whisking, mixing, chopping, pouring) and taking part in keeping a record 1. On four different days use a different cooking skill 2. Take part in recording: a) the different cooking skills you used b) when you used the different cooking skills Mix the ingredients for a cake Pour milk in to a measuring jug Grate cheese for a sauce Select and use equipment for cooking Selecting and using appropriate equipment for different cooking activities (for example, select and use a knife and chopping board to chop carrots), using the equipment safely (for example, holding the knife by the handle) and contributing to keeping a record 1. On three different days select and use appropriate equipment for different cooking activities 2. Use the equipment safely 3. Contribute to recording: a) the equipment you selected for each cooking activity b) when you carried out each activity c) how you used the equipment safely Select and use a whisk to whip cream in a bowl which is on a non-slip surface Select and use a peeler to peel potatoes
3 Home Management Module 2 Prepare a drink and snack Preparing a drink and snack (for example, a cup of tea and a toasted teacake), communicating preference/s in response to options and choices (for example, which spread to put on the teacake) and taking part in keeping a record 1. On two different days prepare a drink and snack 2. Communicate preference/s in response to options and choices 3. Take part in recording: a) the drinks and snacks prepared b) when you prepared the drinks and snacks c) the preference/s you communicated Prepare a fruit smoothie and a sandwich. Choose the fruit to use in the smoothie. Prepare a toasted sandwich. Choose the filling for your sandwich. Prepare a glass of fruit juice and a bowl of cereal. Choose the cereal and amount of milk. Select and cook a simple meal Selecting, planning and cooking simple meals (for example, jacket potato with baked beans), using appropriate equipment safely (for example, using a non-metallic container in the microwave oven) and contributing to keeping a record 1. Select two different simple meals to cook 2. Contribute to planning each meal 3. Cook each meal using appropriate equipment 4. Use the equipment safely 5. Contribute to recording: a) the two different meals selected b) the planning for each meal c) the equipment used d) how you used the equipment safely Plan and cook sausages and mashed potato Plan and cook a vegetable stir-fry Plan and cook spaghetti bolognese
4 Home Management Module 3 Use shopping facilities Using different shops (for example, local greengrocer, post office), recognising the shops you need to use (for example, using gesture to indicate you have reached the greengrocer), locating where to pay for the item/s (for example, pointing at the till) and taking part in keeping a record 1. On two different days use a different shop to purchase at least one item 2. Recognise the shop you need to use 3. Locate where to pay for the item/s 4. Take part in recording: a) the two different shops you used b) when you visited each shop c) how you indicated your recognition of the shops to use and where to pay for the item/s Use a local supermarket. Use vocalisation to indicate when you are at the supermarket and the checkout. Use a local newsagent. Use symbols to indicate have arrived at the newsagent and eye pointing to indicate where to pay.
5 Home Management Module 3 Plan and carry out shopping activities Planning shopping activities (for example, making a list, planning what to take with you), carrying out shopping activities (for example, supermarket, street market) locating items in the shop (for example, asking a shop assistant, look for a stall selling the items you need), identifying the checkout procedure/s (for example, putting items on conveyor belt, waiting in a queue) and contributing to keeping a record 1. Contribute to planning two different shopping activities 2. On two different days carry out a different shopping activity 3. Locate the items you need 4. Identify the checkout procedure/s 5. Contribute to recording: a) the planning for each shopping activity b) the two different shops you used c) when you took part in the shopping activities d) how you located the items e) the checkout procedure/s for each shop Use a Post Office to post a parcel, wait your turn in a queue for a checkout position to become available. Pay and wait for the change. Use a delicatessen to purchase items for a snack. Ask the shop assistant for the items you want and wait for them to be packed and handed to you before going to the till to pay.
6 Home Management Module 4 Take part in preparing food for an event Taking part in preparing food for an event (for example, a birthday party), communicating preference/s in response to options and choices (for example, using objects of reference to indicate the crisps and drinks you want to prepare) and taking part in keeping a record 1. Take part in preparing food for an event 2. Communicate preference/s in response to options and choices 3. Take part in recording: a) the event you prepared the food for b) the food prepared c) the preference/s you communicated Prepare sausage rolls for a bonfire night party Prepare salad for a summer barbecue Select, plan and prepare food for an event Selecting food for an event (for example, housewarming party), agreeing and planning the food will prepare (for example, listing the items you need to prepare a pizza), communicating preferences (for example, using signing to indicate your choice of food and contributing to keeping a record 1. Contribute to selecting food for an event 2. Agree and plan the food will prepare 3. Prepare the food 4. Communicate preference/s 5. Contribute to recording: a) the event and the food selected b) the planning for the food prepared c) the preference/s you communicated Prepare sandwiches for a celebration buffet Prepare a filling to go with jacket potatoes for a New Year party
7 Home Management Module 5 Carry out household tasks Carrying out different household tasks (for example, collecting washing from a washing line, washing cups) to an acceptable standard (for example, collecting all the dry washing and the pegs, making sure the cups are clean enough to drink from) and taking part in keeping a record 1. Carry out at least three different household tasks 2. Carry out each task to an acceptable standard 3. Take part in recording: a) the household tasks you carried out b) when you carried out the tasks Lay two place settings using placemats and appropriate cutlery and crockery Clear and wipe down a table after a meal ready for the next meal Water houseplants taking care not to over water Complete household tasks using appliances Completing different household tasks (for example, vacuuming), using appliances (for example, vacuum cleaner), using the appliances safely (for example, ensuring the cable is not overstretched), completing each task to an acceptable standard (for example, vacuuming the whole floor area and ensuring that all visible dirt has been lifted) and contributing to keeping a record 1. Complete at least four different household tasks using appliances 2. Use each appliance safely 3. Complete each task to an acceptable standard 4. Contribute to recording: a) the four household tasks and the appliances used b) how you used the appliances safely Load a dishwasher ensuring that sharp knives and pointed utensils are loaded correctly and that items do not prevent the spray arms from rotating Use a kettle to make hot drinks. Do not overfill the kettle. Wait until the water has boiled and the kettle has switched itself off before making the drinks
