3 BREAKFASTSTARTSASUCCESSFULDAY Studies indicate a direct relationship between eating breakfast and performance in school. Parents find it convenient during the morning rush to count on their child eating breakfast at school. is available in all Montgomery County Public Schools. Student breakfast costs $1.30 in middle and high schools. No cost at Preschool- 6 grades for school breakfasts. includes a choice of 1% or skim milk, a variety of 100% fruit and/or vegetable juices, and a variety of whole grain cereals, yogurt in addition to at least one other entrée scheduled daily. A reimbursable breakfast offers at least 4 food items from 3 components: Fruit/Vegetable/Juice (1/2 cup) Grains (1 oz) Milk (8 oz) A reimbursable meal MUST have at least 3 food items (one of those being a fruit and/or vegetable) **There is a difference between meal components and meal items. This year breakfast items will be marked to help students count their way to a reimbursable breakfast. For example the bowl pack cereal will be identified as 1 item, maple pancakes will be 2 items, biscuit would count as 2 items. Information will be provided at Operation Registration and through parent newsletters. Please take time and help us teach your child to make breakfast a fun part of the day. ANDANUTRITIOUSLUNCHWILLCARRYYOUALLTHEWAY Healthy and nutritious school lunches are available everyday to all Montgomery County students. Menus are planned to meet the USDA requirement for calories, protein, iron, calcium and vitamins A and C. Over a week, menus average less than 30% calories from fat and less than 10% calories from saturated fat. menus feature many low-fat and all whole grain products, as well as daily fresh fruit and vegetable choices. During the school year, the School Nutrition department is focusing on signage to explain the meal pattern which will help students understand healthy portion sizes. Flavor stations will also be new this year. The flavor stations will provide healthy alternatives to season food. Student lunch costs $1.90 grades All other schools will be participating at no costs. What is a Reimbursable? A reimbursable lunch offers 5 Components: Vegetables Fruit Meat or Meat Alternate Grains Milk A reimbursable meal MUST contain ½ cup of fruit or vegetable AND at least 2 other full components.

4 ALACARTE Additional menu items are always available a la carte for those students who want a little extra. In addition your student s school may offer other snacks and beverage items a la carte. All snacks and beverages meet state nutrition standards including a limited amount of calories from fat and saturated fat as well as limited added sugar and sodium as well as the new SMART SNACK Guidelines effective July 1, Parents/guardians have the option to restrict a la carte sales by submitting a letter to the School Nutrition Manager at the child s school. SMARTSNACKS The Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards support better health for our kids and echo the good work already taking place in schools across the country. The standards preserve flexibility for time-honored traditions like fundraisers and bake sales, and provide ample transition time for schools. USDA is committed to working closely with students, parents, school stakeholders and the food and beverage industries to implement the new guidelines, and make the healthy choice the easy choice for America s young people. Highlights of the Smart Snacks in School Nutrition Standards include: ---More of the foods we should encourage. ---Less of the foods we should avoid. ---Targeted beverage standards allowing variation by age group. ---Flexibility for important traditions. ---Ample time for implementation. Principals will be provided updates throughout the year. Visit for more information. FOODALLERGIES Students with food allergies that affect a vital life function are permitted to request meal modifications by having a licensed medical authority complete and sign a USDA-required medical form. A parent/guardian signature is also required. The form must be submitted every year. The current form is available to download from the district website. Parents/guardians are encouraged to make all school officials aware of all student allergies. Common food allergen triggers, including but not limited to corn, dairy, eggs, fish, milk, nuts, soy and wheat may come into contact with some or all foods served due to the possibility of cross-contamination during product manufacturing or preparation and service. KENTUCKYPROUD Our School Nutrition department was the first school nutrition program in the state to be Kentucky Proud. We are committed to serving our students as many locally produced foods as possible. Serving foods grown in Kentucky decreases the distance the food travels and allows us to serve it at its freshest while supporting Kentucky s farm families. This year will be featuring Farm to Table on My Plate during Week One Friday. Featured products will be: Local blueberries and local apples for breakfast and lunch items made with local butternut squash and sweet potatoes --Cheesy Chicken and Beefy Mac and Cheese. Other items may be available throughout the year.
