1 Schl Statement ANAPHYLAXIS MANAGEMENT POLICY BEAUFORT PRIMARY SCHOOL Ministerial Order 706 Anaphylaxis Management in Schls The schl will fully cmply with Ministerial Order 706 and the assciated Guidelines published and amended by the Department frm time t time. GUIDELINES The Principal will ensure that an Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan is develped, in cnsultatin with the student s Parents, fr any student wh has been diagnsed by a Medical Practitiner as being at risk f anaphylaxis. The Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan will be in place as sn as practicable after the student enrls, and where pssible befre their first day f schl. The Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan will set ut the fllwing: infrmatin abut the student s medical cnditin that relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, including the type f allergy/allergies the student has (based n a written diagnsis frm a Medical Practitiner); strategies t minimise the risk f expsure t knwn and ntified allergens while the student is under the care r supervisin f Schl Staff, fr in-schl and ut-f-schl settings including in the schl yard, at camps and excursins, r at special events cnducted, rganised r attended by the Schl; the name f the persn(s) respnsible fr implementing the strategies; infrmatin n where the student's medicatin will be stred; the student's emergency cntact details; and an ASCIA Actin Plan. It is the respnsibility f the Parents t: prvide the ASCIA Actin Plan; infrm the Schl in writing if their child s medical cnditin, insfar as it relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, changes and if relevant, prvide an updated ASCIA Actin Plan; prvide an up t date pht fr the ASCIA Actin Plan when that Plan is prvided t the Schl and when it is reviewed; and prvide the Schl with an Adrenaline Autinjectr that is current and nt expired fr their child. IMPLEMENTATION Schl Staff will implement and mnitr the student s Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan. - annually; The student s Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan will be reviewed, in cnsultatin with the student s Parents in all f the fllwing circumstances: - if the student's medical cnditin, insfar as it relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, changes; - as sn as practicable after the student has an anaphylactic reactin at Schl; and - when the student is t participate in an ff-site activity, such as camps and excursins, r at special events cnducted, rganised r attended by the Schl (eg. class parties, elective subjects, cultural days, fetes, incursins).

2 Preventin Strategies Classrms 1. Keep a cpy f the student's Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan in the classrm. Be sure the ASCIA Actin Plan is easily accessible even if the Adrenaline Autinjectr is kept in anther lcatin. 2. Liaise with Parents abut fd-related activities ahead f time. 3. Use nn-fd treats where pssible, but if fd treats are used in class it is recmmended that Parents f students with fd allergy prvide a treat bx with alternative treats. Treat bxes shuld be clearly labelled and nly handled by the student. 4. Never give fd frm utside surces t a student wh is at risk f anaphylaxis. 5. Treats fr the ther students in the class shuld nt cntain the substance t which the student is allergic. It is recmmended t use nn-fd treats where pssible. 6. Prducts labelled 'may cntain traces f nuts' shuld nt be served t students allergic t nuts. Prducts labelled may cntain milk r egg shuld nt be served t students with milk r egg allergy and s frth. 7. Be aware f the pssibility f hidden allergens in fd and ther substances used in cking, fd technlgy, science and art classes (e.g. egg r milk cartns, empty peanut butter jars). 8. Ensure all cking utensils, preparatin dishes, plates, and knives and frks etc are washed and cleaned thrughly after preparatin f fd and cking. 9. Have regular discussins with students abut the imprtance f washing hands, eating their wn fd and nt sharing fd. 10. A designated staff member shuld infrm casual relief teachers, specialist teachers and vlunteers f the names f any students at risk f anaphylaxis, the lcatin f each student s Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan and Adrenaline Autinjectr, the Schl s Anaphylaxis Management Plicy, and each individual persn s respnsibility in managing an incident. ie seeking a trained staff member. Canteens Canteen staff (whether internal r external) shuld be able t demnstrate satisfactry training in fd allergen management and its implicatins n fdhandling practices, including knwledge f the majr fd allergens triggering anaphylaxis, crss-cntaminatin issues specific t fd allergy, label reading, etc. Canteen staff, including vlunteers, shuld be briefed abut students at risk f anaphylaxis and, where the Principal determines in accrdance with clause f the Order, have up t date training in an Anaphylaxis Management Training Curse as sn as practical after a student enrls. Display the student s name and pht in the canteen as a reminder t Schl Staff. Prducts labelled 'may cntain traces f nuts' shuld nt be served t students allergic t nuts. Canteens shuld prvide a range f healthy meals/prducts that exclude peanut r ther nut prducts in the ingredient list r a may cntain... statement.

3 Make sure that tables and surfaces are wiped dwn with warm sapy water regularly. Fd banning is nt generally recmmended. Instead, a n-sharing with the students with fd allergy apprach is recmmended fr fd, utensils and fd cntainers. Hwever, schl cmmunities can agree t nt stck peanut and tree nut prducts (e.g. hazelnuts, cashews, almnds, etc.), including chclate/hazelnut spreads. Be wary f cntaminatin f ther fds when preparing, handling r displaying fd. Fr example, a tiny amunt f butter r peanut butter left n a knife and used elsewhere may be enugh t cause a severe reactin in smene wh is at risk f anaphylaxis frm cw s milk prducts r peanuts. Yard 1. If a Schl has a student wh is at risk f anaphylaxis, sufficient Schl Staff n yard duty must be trained in the administratin f the Adrenaline Autinjectr (i.e. EpiPen / Anapen ) t be able t respnd quickly t an anaphylactic reactin if needed. 2. Adrenaline Autinjectr and each student s Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan are easily accessible frm the yard, and staff shuld be aware f their exact lcatin. (Remember that an anaphylactic reactin can ccur in as little as a few minutes). 3. Schls must have a Cmmunicatin Plan in place s the student s medical infrmatin and medicatin can be retrieved quickly if a reactin ccurs in the yard. This may include ptins f all yard duty staff carrying emergency cards in yard-duty bags, walkie talkies r yard-duty mbile phnes. All staff n yard duty must be aware f the Schl s Emergency Respnse Prcedures and hw t ntify the general ffice/first aid team f an anaphylactic reactin in the yard. 4. Yard duty staff must als be able t identify, by face, thse students at risk f anaphylaxis. 5. Students with anaphylactic respnses t insects shuld be encuraged t stay away frm water r flwering plants. Schl Staff shuld liaise with Parents t encurage students t wear light r dark rather than bright clurs, as well as clsed shes and lng-sleeved garments when utdrs. 6. Students shuld keep drinks and fd cvered while utdrs. Special events (e.g. sprting events, incursins, class parties, etc.) 1. If a Schl has a student at risk f anaphylaxis, sufficient Schl Staff supervising the special event must be trained in the administratin f an Adrenaline Autinjectr t be able t respnd quickly t an anaphylactic reactin if required. 2. Schl Staff shuld avid using fd in activities r games, including as rewards. 3. Fr special ccasins, Schl Staff shuld cnsult Parents in advance t either develp an alternative fd menu r request the Parents t send a meal fr the student.

Parents f ther students shuld be infrmed in advance abut fds that may cause allergic reactins in students at risk f anaphylaxis and request that they avid prviding students with treats whilst they are at Schl r at a special Schl event. 5. Party ballns shuld nt be used if any student is allergic t latex. Out-f-schl settings Travel t and frm Schl by bus Schl Staff shuld cnsult with Parents f students at risk f anaphylaxis and the bus service prvider t ensure that apprpriate risk minimisatin and preventin strategies and prcesses are in place t address an anaphylactic reactin shuld it ccur n the way t and frm Schl n the bus. This includes the availability and administratin f an Adrenaline Autinjectr. The Adrenaline Autinjectr and ASCIA Actin Plan fr Anaphylaxis must be with the student even if this child is deemed t yung t carry an Adrenaline Autinjectr n their persn at Schl. Excursins/sprting events 1. If a Schl has a student at risk f anaphylaxis, sufficient Schl Staff supervising the special event must be trained in the administratin f an Adrenaline Autinjectr and be able t respnd quickly t an anaphylactic reactin if required. 2. A Schl Staff member r team f Schl Staff trained in the recgnitin f anaphylaxis and the administratin f the Adrenaline Autinjectr must accmpany any student at risk f anaphylaxis n excursins. 3. Schl Staff shuld avid using fd in activities r games, including as rewards. 4. The Adrenaline Autinjectr and a cpy f the Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan fr each student at risk f anaphylaxis shuld be easily accessible and Schl Staff must be aware f their exact lcatin. 5. Fr each excursin etc, a risk assessment shuld be undertaken fr each individual student attending wh is at risk f anaphylaxis. The risks may vary accrding t the number f anaphylactic students attending, the nature f the excursin/sprting event, size f venue, distance frm medical assistance, the structure f excursin and crrespnding staffstudent rati. All Schl Staff members present during the excursin need t be aware f the identity f any students attending wh are at risk f anaphylaxis and be able t identify them by face. 6. The Schl shuld cnsult Parents f anaphylactic students in advance t discuss issues that may arise; t develp an alternative fd menu; r request the Parents prvide a meal (if required). 7. Parents may wish t accmpany their child n excursins. This shuld be discussed with Parents as anther strategy fr supprting the student wh is at risk f anaphylaxis. 8. Prir t the excursin taking place Schl Staff shuld cnsult with the student's Parents and Medical Practitiner (if necessary) t review the student s Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan t ensure that it is up t date and relevant t the particular excursin activity.

5 Camps Prir t engaging a camp wner/peratr s services the Schl shuld make enquiries as t whether it can prvide fd that is safe fr anaphylactic students. If a camp wner/peratr cannt prvide this cnfirmatin t the Schl, then the Schl shuld cnsider using an alternative service prvider. The camp ck shuld be able t demnstrate satisfactry training in fd allergen management and its implicatins n fd-handling practices, including knwledge f the majr fd allergens triggering anaphylaxis, crss-cntaminatin issues specific t fd allergy, label reading, etc. Schls must nt sign any written disclaimer r statement frm a camp wner/peratr that indicates that the wner/peratr is unable t prvide fd which is safe fr students at risk f anaphylaxis. Schls have a duty f care t prtect students in their care frm reasnably freseeable injury and this duty cannt be delegated t any third party. Schls shuld cnduct a risk assessment and develp a risk management strategy fr students at risk f anaphylaxis. This shuld be develped in cnsultatin with Parents f students at risk f anaphylaxis and camp wners/peratrs prir t the camp dates. Schl Staff shuld cnsult with Parents f students at risk f anaphylaxis and the camp wner/peratr t ensure that apprpriate risk minimisatin and preventin strategies and prcesses are in place t address an anaphylactic reactin shuld it ccur. If the Schl has cncerns abut whether the fd prvided n a camp will be safe fr students at risk f anaphylaxis, it shuld als cnsider alternative means fr prviding fd fr thse students. Use f substances cntaining allergens shuld be avided where pssible. Camps shuld avid stcking peanut r tree nut prducts, including nut spreads. Prducts that may cntain traces f nuts may be served, but nt t students wh are knwn t be allergic t nuts. The student's Adrenaline Autinjectr, Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan, including the ASCIA Actin Plan fr Anaphylaxis and a mbile phne must be taken n camp. If mbile phne access is nt available, an alternative methd f cmmunicatin in an emergency must be cnsidered, e.g. a satellite phne. Prir t the camp taking place Schl Staff shuld cnsult with the student's Parents t review the students Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan t ensure that it is up t date and relevant t the circumstances f the particular camp. Schl Staff participating in the camp shuld be clear abut their rles and respnsibilities in the event f an anaphylactic reactin. Check the emergency respnse prcedures that the camp prvider has in place. Ensure that these are sufficient in the event f an anaphylactic reactin and ensure all Schl Staff participating in the camp are clear abut their rles and respnsibilities. Cntact lcal emergency services and hspitals well prir t the camp. Advise full medical cnditins f students at risk, lcatin f camp and lcatin f any ff camp activities. Ensure cntact details f emergency services are distributed t all Schl Staff as part f the emergency respnse prcedures develped fr the camp. Schls shuld cnsider taking an Adrenaline Autinjectr fr General Use n a schl camp, even if there is n student at risk f anaphylaxis, as a back up device in the event f an emergency.

6 The Adrenaline Autinjectr shuld remain clse t the student and Schl Staff must be aware f its lcatin at all times. The Adrenaline Autinjectr shuld be carried in the schl first aid kit; hwever, Schls can cnsider allwing students, particularly adlescents, t carry their Adrenaline Autinjectr n camp. Remember that all Schl Staff members still have a duty f care twards the student even if they d carry their wn Adrenaline Autinjectr. Students with anaphylactic respnses t insects shuld always wear clsed shes and lng-sleeved garments when utdrs and shuld be encuraged t stay away frm water r flwering plants. Cking and art and craft games shuld nt invlve the use f knwn allergens. Cnsider the ptential expsure t allergens when cnsuming fd n buses and in cabins. Schl Management The schl s emergency management plan cntains: a cmplete and up t date list f students identified as having a medical cnditin that relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin; details f Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plans and ASCIA Actin Plans and where these can be lcated: in a classrm; in the schl yard; in all schl buildings and sites including gymnasiums and halls; n schl excursins; n schl camps; and at special events cnducted, rganised r attended by the schl. Infrmatin abut the strage and accessibility f Adrenaline Autinjectrs; hw cmmunicatin with Schl Staff, students and Parents is t ccur in in accrdance with a cmmunicatin plan. Adrenaline Autinjectrs fr General Use The Principal will purchase Adrenaline Autinjectr(s) fr General Use (purchased by the Schl) and as a back up t thse supplied by Parents. Strage f Adrenaline Autinjectrs Adrenaline Autinjectrs fr individual students, r fr general use, must be stred crrectly and be able t be accessed quickly, because, in sme cases, expsure t an allergen can lead t an anaphylactic reactin in as little as five minutes; Adrenaline Autinjectrs must be stred in an unlcked, easily accessible place away frm direct light and heat but nt in a refrigeratr r freezer; Each Adrenaline Autinjectr must be clearly labelled with the student's name and be stred with a cpy f the student's ASCIA Actin Plan; An Adrenaline Autinjectr fr General Use must be clearly labelled and distinguishable frm thse fr students at risk f anaphylaxis; and

7 Trainer Adrenaline Autinjectrs (which d nt cntain adrenaline r a needle) are nt stred in the same lcatin due t the risk f cnfusin. Regular review f Adrenaline Autinjectrs Adrenaline Autinjectrs must be regularly check t ensure that they are: - Current - Clearly labelled with student s name - Stred crrectly with the student s - Are easily accessible Cmmunicatin Plan In-Schl Envirnment Classrms - Use classrm phnes/persnal mbile phnes t raise the alarm that a reactin has ccurred. An emergency card system (laminated card stating anaphylaxis emergency), may be used whereby students g t the nearest teacher r ffice t raise an alarm which triggers getting an Adrenaline Autinjectr t the child and ther emergency respnse prtcls. Yard - Use mbile phnes, walkie talkies r the card system whilst n yard duty. In additin t planning hw t get an Adrenaline Autinjectr t a student, plans need t be in place fr: a nminated staff member t call ambulance; and a nminated staff member t wait fr ambulance at a designated schl entrance. Out-f Schl Envirnments Excursins and Camps - Each individual camp and excursin requires risk assessment fr each individual student attending wh is at risk f anaphylaxis. Therefre emergency prcedures will vary accrdingly. A team f Schl Staff trained in anaphylaxis need t attend each event, and apprpriate methds f cmmunicatin need t be discussed. The lcatin f Adrenaline Autinjectrs i.e. wh will be carrying them. Is there a secnd medical kit? Wh has it?; hw t get the Adrenaline Autinjectr t a student; and wh will call fr ambulance respnse, including giving detailed lcatin address. e.g. Melway reference if city excursin, and best access pint r camp address/gps lcatin. Students at risk f anaphylaxis A member f the Schl Staff shuld remain with the student wh is displaying symptms f anaphylaxis at all times. As per instructins n the ASCIA Actin Plan: Lay the persn flat. D nt allw them t stand r walk. If breathing is difficult allw them t sit. A member f the Schl Staff shuld immediately lcate the student's Adrenaline Autinjectr and the student's Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan, which includes the student s ASCIA Actin Plan. The Adrenaline Autinjectr shuld then be administered fllwing the instructins in the student's ASCIA Actin Plan. If an Adrenaline Autinjectr is administered, the Schl must 1. Immediately call an ambulance (000/112).

8 Staff Training 2. Lay the student flat and elevate their legs. D nt allw the student t stand r walk. If breathing is difficult fr them, allw them t sit but nt t stand. 3. Reassure the student experiencing the reactin as they are likely t be feeling anxius and frightened as a result f the reactin and the side-effects f the adrenaline. Watch the student clsely in case f a wrsening cnditin. Ask anther member f the Schl Staff t mve ther students away and reassure them elsewhere. 4. In the situatin where there is n imprvement r severe symptms prgress (as described in the ASCIA Actin Plan), a secnd injectin (f the same dsage) may be administered after five minutes, if a secnd autinjectr is available (such as the Adrenaline Autinjectr fr General Use). 5. Then cntact the student's emergency cntacts. 6. Later, cntact Security Services Unit, Department f Educatin and Early Childhd Develpment t reprt the incident n (available 24 hurs a day, 7 days a week). A reprt will then be ldged n IRIS (Incident Reprting Infrmatin System). It is the respnsibility f the Principal f the Schl t ensure that all Schl Staff are: trained; and briefed at least twice per calendar year. Schl Staff will undertake the fllwing training: - an Anaphylaxis Management Training Curse in the three years prir; and - participate in a briefing, t ccur twice per calendar year (with the first briefing t be held at the beginning f the schl year) n: the Schl s Anaphylaxis Management Plicy; the causes, symptms and treatment f anaphylaxis; the identities f the students with a medical cnditin that relates t an allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, and where their medicatin is lcated; hw t use an Adrenaline Autinjectr, including hands n practise with a trainer Adrenaline Autinjectr device; the Schl s general first aid and emergency respnse prcedures; and the lcatin f, and access t, Adrenaline Autinjectr that have been prvided by Parents r purchased by the Schl fr general use. The briefing must be cnducted by a member f Schl Staff wh has successfully cmpleted an Anaphylaxis Management Training Curse in the last 12 mnths. Annual Risk Management Checklist The Principal will cmplete an annual Risk Management Checklist as published by the Department f Educatin and Early Childhd Develpment t mnitr cmpliance with their bligatins.
