31 show dedicatee For the past 11 years, Jimmy and Cherrie Curtis of Texarkana, Texas have advised the Texas Junior Charolais Association (TJCA) membership and families. The Curtis met while in college at Mississippi State University. Jimmy s work moved them to Texarkana, where he managed A Bar Ranch, a noted seedstock Brangus and commercial cow operation, for 26 years. In the 90 s, Jimmy began using Charolais bulls on the Brangusbased cowherd. When their children, Jamie and Wesley, began showing cattle, they were drawn to Charolais. Jimmy and Cherrie met the Lehman and Bracewell families who prompted them to become more involved with the Charolais Association of Texas. Following their first Fort Worth Junior Charolais Show in 2002, Jimmy and Cherrie volunteered to help with the TJCA. By June, they were the advisors. The Curtis coordinated their first Texas State Show in 2003 with limited funds, but they were quick to recognize the experiences shared Jimmy and Cherrie Curtis with the kids were more important than the prizes awarded. Despite their hardwork and long hours, the Curtis realized support from the kids and parents made the TJCA thrive. Cherrie has worked as a local 4-H Extension Agent for the last 13 years. She dedicates many hours to her members and their development. Cherrie coaches award-winning livestock judging and rifle teams. For the last 22 years, Jimmy has volunteered at the Four States Fair, the last 15 of which, he has served as the Livestock Show Coordinator across all species. He served three years as Chairman of the Four States Fair Board of Directors, before recently being appointed President and CEO of the Four States Fairgrounds. Jimmy also serves as a 4-H Beef Mentor to the youth in the county. He spends one-on-one time with beginning families assisting them with their beef projects ranging from selection to feeding to grooming. Fitting and showmanship clinics are an integral part of the program. Jimmy and Cherrie are truly dedicated to the youth of agriculture. They practice an open-door policy to all of the kids they are involved with. Whether they are helping clip calves or breed heifers, they are always available. As Jimmy reflects, he stated, Junior programs have done us as much good as the kids. The Curtis made their first Junior National trip to their home state of Mississippi in This would prove the first of many in the years to come. Cherrie said her most memorable Junior National experiences were the bonding of Texas juniors in Hutchinson in 2005, receiving the AIJCA Advisor of the Year Award in Springfield in 2006 and the flooding in Wichita Falls in Jimmy stated, Junior Nationals taught the kids manners, how to speak to people and how to interact with adults. Jimmy and Cherrie helped plan their second AIJCA Junior National Show this year in Texarkana. They enjoy being grandparents to Jamie and her husband Michael s two children, Stetson and Kynzie. The Curtis have helped raise thousands of dollars for the Texas Juniors and planned two AIJCA Junior National Shows. When asked about Tyson Hann awarding Jimmy and Cherrie 2006 AIJCA Advisors of the Year. receiving this award Jimmy said, There is nothing like the kids recognizing us. They mean the world to us. Cherrie and I truly know the importance of junior programs and the people involved.

32 Conference honoree Daphne Davis of London Mills, Ill. is no stranger to the Charolais breed. As a former Miss Charolais USA and longtime AIJCA Advisory Board member, Daphne has been involved in the AIJCA since her youth. Daphne s parents, Lowell and Luann Davis, bought their first Charolais bull in the mid-1960s. By the early 1970s, the Davis bred-up their herd to purebred status. Daphne and her sister Shelley were very involved with the family cattle operation, Swegle Creek Farm. In 1979, Daphne attended her first AIJCA Junior National Heifer Show in St. Paul, Minn. She was eager to learn more about the livestock industry and after graduating high school attended Blackhawk East Community College and was a member of the livestock judging team. She attended the Junior National Heifer Show and the Leadership Conference in 1982 in Brookings, S.D. She was crowned 1983 Miss Charolais USA during the 1982 American Royal. She traveled to shows and sales representing Charolais and building relationships with breeders. Daphne capped off her AIJCA career at the 1983 Junior National in Lafayette, Ind., by exhibiting the Grand Champion Bred & Owned Heifer, Swegle Creek Nikki 221. After college, she spent time working for DeBruycker Charolais in Dutton, Mont. and Copeland Farms of Kansas before moving back to Illinois to help manage the family farm. Daphne Davis, 1983 Miss Charolais USA Daphne awarding the 2007 Gold Elite Award to Troy Bertsche, Flanagan, Ill. Daphne s two sons, Chance and Will, have grown up in the showring. Chance attended his first AIJCA Junior National in 1997 at age 9 and Will attended his first show in the stroller and hasn t missed one yet. Her family had much success in the showring. Chance exhibited the 1999 Junior National Grand Champion Owned Heifer, Swegle Creek Picabo 801 in Tennessee. Picabo s progeny enjoyed much success in the showring, garnering her Show Dam of the Year for two consecutive years, The most successful were the 35th National Reserve Champion Bull and Show Bull of the Year, SC Windfall 123 ET Pld and the 2005 Junior National Reserve Grand Champion Female, Swegle Creek Olympia ET, exhibited by Megan Fink, Randolph, Kan. After the Swegle Creek Farm Dispersal Sale in 2006, Daphne and the family s focus went to Will s herd, WGB Charolais. Daphne has influenced the lives of many AIJCA members. Having attended every Junior National since 1997, she was on the founding AIJCA Advisory Board and has been a member since. She has aided the Junior Board at meetings and activities year-round. Daphne coordinates the Gold Elite Junior Merit Selection each year at the Junior National. She attends the AIJCA Annual Membership Meetings and is always there to give advice or lend a hand. Daphne has been recruiting Junior Board members and Miss Charolais USA candidates for many years and does as much behind the scenes as in front. She has been an advisor or an active influence to the Illinois Junior Charolais Association since 1999 and was on the 2011 Junior National Planning Committee. When Daphne isn t helping on the family farm, she is clerking sales or helping at the photo backdrop or picture pen. Daphne and Will also raise and sell Miniature Australian Shepherds. Daphne has seen the industry evolve but she says one thing stays the same, The people are great and the relationships you make are like none other. I love the people. My livestock friends are my best friends.
