5 In Italy, every region and every city has its traditions, its typical cuisine and its traditional customs. This is a small calendar of the holidays that we generally celebrate in Italy.

6 January - The witch (La befana) January 6 is the day of the Epiphany. On this day all the children wake up with a sock full of candy and charcoal brought during the night from the Befana. She is an old witch who flies on a broom to bring goodies to the good children and coal to the bad ones.

7 February - Carnival February is the month of the carnival, celebrated with people dressed in costume and with the production of many different sweets. The most famous carnival is that of Venezia, while the most famous masks of the Italian carnival are Colombina and Arlecchino, Pantalone and Pulcinella.

9 March Mimosas Mimosa is the name of a flower. This flower, in Italy, has become the symbol of the women's party. On March 8th, it is a tradition to give women a branch of mimosas. Also on March 19, in Italy we celebrate Father's Day.

10 April - Easter Easter for Catholics is a important festivity and in Italy there are many traditions linked to the Holy Week. On Easter day we eat the sweet dove and the chocolate eggs, which contain a surprise inside. On Easter Monday we make trips and picnics in the countryside or on the sea.

11 May - Orange blossoms In May, orange trees bloom with their scent. On the second Sunday of May we celebrate Mother's Day.

12 June Finish the school This is the month in which schools close and all children start summer holidays. June 2nd is also the Republic Day, created in 1946.

13 July and August - San Lorenzo and Ferragosto In this period many people go to the beach. In Italy there are many beautiful beaches. August 10 is San Lorenzo. On this August night you can see many shooting stars and we Italians go to the mountains or to the beach. For every shooting star we express a wish.

14 On August 15, the Catholic Church celebrates the ascension of Our Lady to heaven. This festival coincides with an ancient tradition of ancient Rome, feriae Augusti, voluta dall'imperatore Augustus. During this day the cities are depopulated and almost everyone goes to the sea.

15 September - The harvest In September the schools begin and there i salso "the harvest", which means the grape harvest to make wine.

16 October - Chestnuts and olive harvest In October we collect the olives to produce the oil that we also use to conserve vegetables during the winter. In this month it is possible to feel the smell of "roasted chestnuts", roasted chestnuts and sold on the streets.

17 November - All Saints In November we celebrate "All Saints". At the beginning of the month we visit the cemeteries to bring the chrysanthemum flowers to the dead.

18 December - Christmas In Italy we celebrate Christmas on the night of the 24th with a big dinner with the relatives. We open gifts during the night before midnight mass. On Christmas day we have a big lunch with the whole family and we play in Tombola. On the last night of the year, on New Year's Eve we make a big dinner "the dinner" and we bring, traditionally, red underwear. A dish that is not lacking almost never in the dinner, is the zampone (or cotechino) with lentils. According to tradition, every lentil eaten is a penny earned in the new year.
