1 The Capri Story is the oldest single generation Italian Restaurant in Rockford. The Grisanzio Family has owned and operated the Capri since The current day Capri s roots can be traced back to Italy where Vito Grisanzio was born. At a very early age he learned the value of hard work. He grew up in a large family in the World War II era in the town of Mola di Bari. He immigrated from Italy in He lived in Chicago for a few years and then moved to Rockford in 1962 where he started working for a couple of Italians who operated a small pizza parlor. Soon after starting Vito decided to buy the place and brought his brother Domenic in to help him. With their hard work and dedication they developed a following and established Capri as a downtown destination and landmark. In 1970, Vito married Janette and they worked diligently to grow their business. In 1979, they embarked on a major renovation of their facility. The restaurant doubled in size while moving the entrance from the East State Street side of the building to the back of the building, where the parking is located today. Gone are the days when patrons could walk down State Street and look in the old picture window and see pizzas being made. Vito and Janette wanted to keep that tradition when they overhauled the restaurant, so they designed the kitchen window in the entry way. The 1980 s brought a weak economy and a depressed downtown area, but their work ethic and commitment to their passion helped the restaurant persevere. In the early 1990 s another remolding project was embarked upon in which a small banquet room was created. The Grisanzio family takes great pride in knowing patrons have shared many memories here at the restaurant. Vito and Janette s three sons Domenic, Vito Jr., and Michael have grown up learning the same values and lessons taught to their parents generations. All three have spent many years working in the restaurant as they grew up. In recent years Vito Jr. and Michael have followed in the tradition and are working to carry on the Capri legacy.
