2 OVERVIEW The new Festival of Food & Wine is a celebration of regional cuisine. It s a yearround showcase of authentic restaurants serving special three-course lunch and dinner menus (in English) featuring the best of the region s gastronomy (with accompanying wine) at excellent value-for-money prices. Each restaurant will have the Festival of Food logo in the window so that you know you ve found the right place and, by visiting any of these restaurants, you ll experience a mouthwatering slice of the Alentejo s cultural heritage. We like to call the Alentejo the gastronomic soul of Portugal. Across the region, savour a wonderful array of regional delicacies and rustic dishes, from sheep s milk cheeses, acorn liqueur and organic locally-grown asparagus, to Alentejo black pork, salt cod and egg-based desserts. The Alentejo is known as the breadbasket of Portugal, holds traditional food events all year round and produces almost half of Portugal s wine, much of it award-winning. BARRANCARNES, CASA DO PORCO PRETO Eiras Altas, Barrancarnes, SE Alentejo ( ) barrancarnes@barrancarnes.com/ This modern factory - with tasting restaurant - has been in business since 1988, and is dedicated exclusively to the production, preparation and curing of products from the free-range Alentejo Black Pig, which is bred outdoors and which feeds on acorns and grass. CASA DE CHA MALTESINHAS Terreiro dos Valentes, Beja, Central Alentejo ( ) This café/bakery uses traditional recipes from the convents and monasteries in the Alentejo to create a range of rich desserts made from mainly egg yolk and sugar. The baker can crack almost 3,000 eggs in a day, and she never uses the egg whites (these were traditionally used to starch the nuns habits). Enjoy your taste of Alentejo food & wine!

Maria João has run the kitchen since the days when it is just a simple taberna ; now it s one of the locals favourite restaurants serving local dishes, specialising in lamb and pork. The architecture is traditional, the interior is decorated with local crafts and the atmosphere is informal. The atmosphere is informal and the interior design is contemporary, in keeping with local themes. The restaurant also sells products such as honey and jam. Chef Bouazza has created a regional menu with innovative twists. The restaurant belongs to Fundação Eugénio de Almeida, a renowned wine and olive oil producer. O FIALHO Travessa dos Mascarenhas, Évora (Central Alentejo) Tel restaurantefialho@iol.pt Fialho was opened in 1948 by Manuel Fialho and is now run by his children, Amor and Manuel, and his grandchildren. From serving snacks in the early days to preparing meals for public officials later on, and more recently being recognised for its promotion of Alentejo cuisine, Fialho has consistently served traditional and regional dishes. It opened in 1975 as a small café and is very popular with the locals and with Spanish visitors. It boasts a lovely terrace, and offers an excellent wine list, game dishes and the famous Bacalhau Dourado, a salt cod specialty from Elvas.
