1 1. Look at the following words and organise them into the appropriate group. delicious spicy small efficient beef busy cheesy fresh hardworking friendly ingredients overcooked beansprouts rice meat cheese expensive traditional vegetarian vegetables popular tasty Chinese cuisine Names of food Describing the food Describing the place or the staff 2. Use some of these words to fill in the gaps in the answer to a Part 2 question below. Describe your favourite place to have a meal: My favourite restaurant is a Chinese restaurant called New Flavour. There are several reasons why I feel this way, but the main one is the food of course! I usually go there in the early evening with my husband. Another reason why I like New Flavour is that it opens earlier than other restaurants. This is important to us because we hate waiting for restaurants that don t open until late. We re always very hungry by that time, so it s great to be able to go and eat when we want to. Some people may disagree with me, but I think is among the best in the world, especially the way they cook. Chinese vegetable dishes are crunchy and you can taste the real flavour of the because they aren t or covered in some sauce. As I said before, I normally go there with my husband, but sometimes we meet our family or friends there too, especially if it s someone s birthday or something like that. In terms of the food, I m not sure if this is the right way to express it, but it s all just so. Where should I start? Well, my favourite dish is with cumin. It s always cooked perfectly and it goes really well with a plate of stir-fried beansprouts, a bowl of steamed rice and some chopped chillies in soy sauce. My husband is, and he gets the same thing every time, which is tofu with peanuts. Honestly, I don t know how he can eat it every time, but he does. I think one difference between men and women is that men are happy eating the same thing every day. Oh, I almost forgot to say that it s not as as other restaurants in the area. That s another reason why we like it so much. The only problem is that it s very and if it s too busy, we have to wait outside until a table comes free, but the staff are very and hardworking, which makes the meals come out quickly. And I should add that the décor is simple but colourful. It s what we call cheap and. Considering all these things, it s the best restaurant for us.

2 Discuss these Part 1 Questions with your partner: What is your main meal of the day? Can you cook? How do most people learn to cook? What kind of food do you like? Who does most of the cooking in your household? Do you prefer eating at home or in a restaurant? How often do you eat out at restaurants or cafes? When was the last time you went to a restaurant? Next you will practice Part 2 (2 minutes speaking) and Part 3 (extension questions) with a partner. When you answer your partner s questions for Part 3, remember to use some of the language below: Giving opinion(s) Agreeing generally It seems to me that.. I believe that.. about a familiar topic This is just my opinion but I think that.. I am convinced that.. I feel absolutely certain that.. about an unfamiliar topic I don t have a strong opinion but I can see that.. (uncertain) I am not very familiar with this topic, but my first thought on it is that.. Some people may disagree with me but I think that.. Supporting opinion(s) with reasons There are several reasons why I feel this way. The main one is that Another reason that supports my opinion is that Thirdly, Comparing X is better than Y (using comparatives) X is the best (using superlatives) X is as good as Y (using as + adj + as) Contrasting X is not as good as Y (using not + as + adj + as) The difference between X and Y is that One one hand, On the other hand,. Giving yourself time to think Let me see... That s an interesting question... Where should I start? Well,... I ve never really thought about this before... I don t know a lot about this, but... When you want to add something else And I should add that... I almost forgot to say that...

3 Student A Part 2: Speak for 2 minutes on the following. Describe your favourite cafe or restaurant. You should mention: when you go there who you go there with what you like to eat there and explain why it is your favourite. You have 1 minute to prepare and you may write some notes here Part 3: Extension Questions o o Ask your partner these questions after she finishes her 2 minutes of Part 2 speaking If your partner doesn t give you a long answer to these questions, ask Why? What types of food are popular in your country? What are the main differences between traditional food from your country and Western food? Have eating habits in your country changed in recent years? Why are fast food restaurants becoming more popular around the world? How do you think people s eating habits will change in the future? Should governments put a special tax on unhealthy food to make it more expensive? How is food for a special occasion different from the food you eat every day? Should farmers use dangerous chemicals like pesticides? Nowadays, many people in the world do not have enough food to eat. How can we solve this problem?

4 Student B Part 2: Speak for 2 minutes on the following. Describe your favourite cafe or restaurant. You should mention: when you go there who you go there with what you like to eat there and explain why it is your favourite You have 1 minute to prepare and you may write some notes here Part 3: Extension Questions o Ask your partner these questions after she finishes her 2 minutes of Part 2 speaking o If your partner doesn t give you a long answer to these questions, ask Why? Are there any differences between the kinds of food that children like to eat and the kind that adults like? How popular is fast food in your country? What are the differences between fast food and home-cooked food? Why is it important to eat healthy food? How can children learn to eat healthy food? What are the differences between the food that people ate in the past in your country and the food they eat now? What is more important for a restaurant: the quality of the food or the service? Do you think that food will become more or less expensive in the future? How will this affect societies around the world? How will global warming and climate change affect the production of food around the world?
