Some believe the name Hannya comes from Hannya-Bo, an artist monk who perfected the way the Hannya mask looks used in traditional Japanese theater. The most renowned character, Hannya, is actually not a devil or demon but a passionate jealous woman. As the ancient folklore tells, she was once a beautiful woman whose father operated a harbor in old Japan. She had fallen in love with a priest who had arrived but he was unable to return her love. Her unrequited love causes her to turn into a monster who expresses the fury of a woman overwhelmed with jealousy and anger. Nowadays, one can see the Hannya mask hung over many establishments in Japan to ward off evil and protect all within.
