4 DIBAJI Ndoa ya Wake wengi: Jambo hili laonekana lenye kuchukiza kiasi gani! Jambo la kushangaza hasa ni kuwa wale watu wanaojaribu kushawishi fikara za muundo wa jamii ambazo huzifikiria ndoa za wake wengi kuwa ni jambo liruhusiwalo tu lakini si la lazima, na ambao hufikiria kuwa muundo wa mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja ndio muundo thabiti na ufaao kwa ustaarabu, wanaziona ndoa za wake wensi kuwa ni jambo lenye kuchukiza sana. Watu hawa wanaelewa wazi kuwa haiwezekani kuweka sheria ambayo inamtosheleza mwanaume kwa mke mmoja tu. Watu hawa hawa wanaoyahubiri mapenzi ya mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja, wanaonekana kuwa wameanza kufanya mapenzi haramu au mambo fulani fulani na watu wengine. Watu hawa wamuonapo Mwislamu mwaminifu mwenye wake wawili wapatao mapenzi ya sawa sawa kutoka kwa mume wao, na ambaye hafanyi mapenzi haramu maishani mwake, huanza kumdharau na kuichukia ndoa ya wake wengi, huku wakitoa mifano kujaribu kuonyesha kuwa maisha ya namna hiyo ni jambo lisilowezekana. Si kweli kuwa mtu karuhusiwa kuwa na wake wengi kwa ajiii ya kujitosheleza kiashki tu, Shabaha ya kuruhusiwa kwa ndoa za wake wengi ni kujaribu kukomesha tabia mbaya katika jamii na kuzuia fujo. Tendo la mume kuoa wake wengi humfanya mke na mume wajitosheleze, na wakati huo huo kuisalimisha jamii kutokana na kutawanya wapenzi kila mahali katika jamii hiyo. Jamii ya namna hii inaweza kujengwa tu kwa kuwaruhusu watu kuoa wake wengi. Kwa vile ndoa ya wake wengi ni jambo lenye kuleta mabishano, jambo hili linahitaji kufikiriwa sana na kuhojiana. Tukiachilia mbali kule kudumisha ndoa halali kati ya mume mmoja na wake wengi, hebu natulitazame wazo hili, kwa kuzitazama lawama za watu wa nchi za Magharibi na kuona ni wapi 1

6 5 Kwa Jina la Mwenyeezi Mungu, Mwingi wa Rehema, Mwenye Kurehemu UTANGULIZI Uislamu umemruhusu mwanamume kuoa zaidi ya mke mmoja. Jambo hili limeruhusiwa kwa nia ya kutatua matatizo ya kijamii na ya kinyumba ambayo yanaikabili jamii mara kwa mara. Mara nyingi mambo ya kawaida ya mume na mke hutegemea mume kuoa mke mwingine. Kama alivyosema Sayyid Saeed Akhtar Rizvi, Chief Missionary wa Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania alipoandika katika Ombi la Tume ya Sheria ya Ndoa na Talaka na cheo cha wanawake walioolewa, ambayo iliteuliwa na Serikali ya Kenya kuwa:- Ndoa ya wake wengi: Jamii ya Kiafrika ilikuwa, na hadi sasa, bado ingali jamii yenye kuoa wake wengi katika kiwango fulani. Uislamu nao umemruhusu mtu kuoa wake wengi. Unamruhusu mume kuoa wake wanne wakati mmoja, na umewajibisha usawa katika kuwatunza wanawake wote. Ikumbukwe kuwa ndoa ya wake wengi si jambo la lazima wala si jambo lipendekezwalo. Ni kibali tu chenye mipaka maalum na masharti. Na katika hali fulani fulani, kibali hiki kinaonekana kuwa kinasaidia sana. Kwa mfano: Kama mke anaugua ugonjwa mkali sana, au yu tasa, au kwa ajili ya sababu fulani fulani nyinginezo inaonekana kuwa isingelifaa kwa hao wanyumba kuishi pamoja kama mtu na mkewe, dawa itolewayo na baadhi ya jamii ni kumtaliki mke huyo na kuoa mwingine. Lakini je, huu ni uadilifu? Je, hili ni jambo zuri na lionyeshalo huruma, kumfukuza mwanamke wakati wa uzee wake au utuuzima wake toka nyumbani mwake, kwa sababu tu 3

7 anaendelea kuugua, au umetukia kuwa tasa? Uislamu unazuia ukatili wa aina hii kwa njia ya kuruhusu ndoa za wake wengi. (Soma gazeti liitwalo The Light Juz. 1, Nos, 11-12). Kwa bahati mbaya, Nchi za Magharibi, na hasa viongozi wa Makanisa ya Kikristo wamekitumia kibali hiki cha ndoa za wake wengi kwa kuulaumu Uislamu. Yaelekea kuwa nia yao ni kuupinga Uislamu tu, wakiwa na tegemeo la kuyarudisha nyuma maendeleo yake, kwa kuutweza machoni pa walimwengu. Katika Propaganda yao dhidi ya kibali hiki, wale wenye kuulaumu Uislamu hutoa hoja hizi:- 1. Kuwa, kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja ni kinyume na Sheria za kimaumbile. 2. Kuwa kibali hiki hushawishi tamaa za kimwili na uzinifu, jambo ambalo huleta madhara kwa ustawi wa jamii. 3. Kuwa ndoa za wake wengi zina hasara za kijamii, huharibu fikara za wanawake, husababisha hasira kali na kukata tamaa na vile vile kusababisha chuki na kuchukiana, jambo ambalo huchafua mpango wa malezi ya watoto. 4. Kuwa utaratibu huu huchafua mpango wa kijamii, maana, wingi wa wake kwa kawaida husababisha wingi wa watoto, jambo ambalo matokeo yake ni matatizo ya kiuchumi. Kabla ya kutoa maoni yetu kuhusu hoja hizi, hebu kwanza natutazame kama ni Uislamu ulioanzisha mpango wa ndoa za wake wengi, au kama desturi hii ilikuwepo tangu zamani sana. Vile vile hebu natutazame kama mpango huu umo mwenye dini nyingine pia. Baada ya hapo tutatazama ni vipi na ni chini ya masharti yapi Uislamu umemruhusu mwanaume kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja. Je, Uislamu unatatua matatizo ya kijamii yanayozikabili nchi nyingi siku hizi? 4

8 NDOA ZA WAKE WENGI NI DESTURI YA TANGU ZAMANI Bwana S. V. Mir Ahmad Ali ameandika katika Tafsiri yake ya Qur ani kwa lugha ya Kiingereza, katika tanbihi (Foot-note) Na. 499, hivi:- Ndoa za wake wengi ni desturi iliyokuwepo miongoni mwa mataifa yote ya zamani ikiwa ni pamoja na Wahindu (Mabaniani) na Mabudha. Ulimwengu mzima kwa ujumla na hasa Uarabuni kabla ya ujumbe wa Mtukufu Mtume (s.a.w.) ilipokuwa chini ya upotovu na shida. Ni ukweli gani wa kihistoria (ukanushao kuweko kwa ndoa hizi) ambao mtu aliyeelimika miongoni mwetu hatathubutu hata kidogo kuukana, hasa kuhusu maisha ya kibinafsi ya watawala wa nchi. Mfalme Mkuu Dasarata, baba wa Sri Rama alioa wake wengi, Wafalme wa Kikristo wa Ulaya hawakuweza kujizuia na ndoa za wake zaidi ya mmoja. Mfalme Henry VIII wa Uingereza alikuwa na wanawake wanane. Hata Mitume Mikuu ya Mwenyezi Mungu kama vile Ibrahim, Suleiman, na wengineo walikuwa na wake zaidi ya mmojamoja. NDOA ZA WAKE WENGI : KWA MUJIBU WA SHERIA ZA DINI YA KIHINDU Bwana S. V. Mir Ah.mad anaendelea kuandika katika tanbihi (Foot-note) hiyo hiyo hivi:- Kuna kutoafikiana kwingi kuhusu, kama ndoa za wake wengi zimeruhusiwa katika sheria za dini ya Kihindu au la. Kufuatana na kitabu kitakatifu cha dini hiyo kiitwacho Manu, Sheria ya jambo hili ni kama ifuatavyo: (a) Kwa ndoa ya kwanza ya wanaume waliozaliwa mara mbili (wake) wa tabaka moja wanapendekezwa sana, lakini kwa wale ambao kwa ajili ya kupendelea kwao wanaendelea (kuoa tena) wake wafuatao (ambao wamechaguliwa) kufuatana na sheria za (Matabaka) wanapendekezwa zaidi, (hapa inafuata orodha ya wanawake ambao wangelipendekezwa). 9 (b) Kama wanaume waliozaliwa mara mbili wanaoa wanawake wa tabaka lao, na wa matabaka mengine (matabaka ya chini), utuuzima, heshima, na makazi ya (wake hao) ni lazima vitayarishwe kwa kufuatana na sheria za tabaka (Varna). (Manu, ix 85) (c) Kama, baada ya mwanamwali mmoja kuonyeshwa mume, na (mwanamwali) (asiyekuwa yule aliyemuonyeshwa) akatolewa kuolewa, (mume huyo) anaweza kuoa wawili (yule aliyeonyeshwa kwanza na huyu anayem- pewa kuoa) kwa bei (mahari) ile ile iliyoruhusiwa katika Manu. (Manu, viii 204) (d) Miongoni mwa (wanaume waliozaliwa mara mbili) wanawake wote wa tabaka moja peke yake (sio mke wa tabaka jingine tofauti, kwa vyovyote vile) anaweza yeye mwenyewe binafsi kumhudumia mumewe na kumsaidia katika mambo ya ibada zake. (Manu, ix 86) (e) Lakini yeyote yule ambaye kwa upumbavu wake atasababisha (ile kazi) kufanywa na mke mwingine wakati wa uhai wa mke wake wa tabaka lake, atatangaziwa na wahenga (kuwa) yu (mbaya) kama kandala (atokanaye na) tabaka la Brahamana. (Manu, ix 87) Maelezo hayo hapo juu yanaonyesha wazi kuwa kitabu kitakatifu cha dini ya Kihindu, Manu, kiliidhinisha ndoa za wake wengi, na kuhusu jambo hili, Bwana S. V. Mir Ahmad katika tanbihi (Foot-note) hiyo hiyo ananakili kutoka uk. 113 wa kitabu cha Bwana Mayne kiitwacho On Hindu Law and Usage hivi: na sasa iishathibitika kabisa katika mahakama za Uhindi ya Waingereza (nchi ambazo siku hizi huitwa Uhindi, Pakistani, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh na Burma) kuwa mfuasi wa dini ya Ki-hindu halazimiki hata kidogo kuhusu idadi ya wake awezao kuoa. Kila mume anaweza kuoa bila ya kibali cha mkewe, au bila ya sababu yoyote ya maana, ila ile ya kupenda kwake tu. 6

10 NDOA ZA WAKE WENGI : KWA MUJIBU WA SHERIA ZA KIYAHUDI Katika kitabu (cha pili) cha Agano la Kale kiitwacho Kutoka, sura ya 21 aya ya 10, imeandikwa hivi:- Kwamba ajitwalie mke mwingine, chakula chake huyo, na nguo zake, na ngono yake, hatampunguzia Ni wazi hata kwa mtu alisomaye Agano la Kale juu juu tu kuweza kujua kuwa si kuwa tu ndoa za wake wengi zimeruhusiwa, bali vile vile linatendeka, na kuwa sheria za jambo hili zimewekwa katika Agano la Kale. NDOA ZA WAKE WENGI : KWA MUJIBU WA SHERIA ZA KIKRISTO Waandishi wa Kikristo wanasema kuwa ndoa za mke mmoja mmoja ndio wazo la Mwenyezi Mungu. Muumba aliwaunganisha mume mmoja na mke mmoja (Mwanzo 2:18-24; Mathayo, 19:5; I Wakorintho 6:16). Kwamba Mwenyezi Mungu aliweka idadi sawa ya Wanaume na ile ya wanawake. (Soma kamusi kiitwacho The Westminster Dictionary of Bible, chapa ya mwaka 1944). Tutalizungumzia jambo hili la kubunia tu, la idadi iliyo sawa ya wanawake na wanaume baadaye. Hapa ningelipendelea kunakili kutoka katika Biblia aya fulani fulani ambazo ndani yake Mwjanyezi Mungu alimwambia Daudi maneno haya:- Nami nikakupa nyumba ya bwana wako, na wake za bwana wako kifuani mwako; nikakupa nyumba ya Israeli na ya Yuda; na kama hayo yangelikuwa machache, ningalikuongezea mambo kadha wa kadha (II Sannweli, 12:8). Vipi basi Mwenyezi Mungu mwenyewe ampe Daudi wake za bwana wake iwapo nia yake ilikuwa kuweka sheria ya mume mmoja kwa mke mmioja? Hata katika kizazi cha saba baada ya Adamu tunaona kuwa Lameki akajitwalia wake wawili (Mwanzo, 4:19); Ibrahimu alikuwa na wake watatu; 7

11 Yakobo alikuwa na wake wawili, mbali na masuria; Musa hakuikomesha ndoa ya wake wengi na badala yake alileta sheria ya kuirekebisha, kama ilivyoelezwa katika sura iliyopita. Wakristo wanajaribu kuyashinda matatizo haya kwa kusema kuwa mitume waliokuja kabla ya Yesu walifanya kosa kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja. Lakini hata hivyo, tatizo lisiloshindika huwakabili Wakristo kuhusu Musa. Kwa sababu Musa alileta Torati kutoka kwa Mwenyezi Mungu, na kama ingelikuwa Mwenyezi Mungu kanuia kuifanya ndoa kuwa muungano kati ya mume mmoja na mke mmoja, kwa nini basi alimpa Musa marekebisho kuhusu ndoa za wake wengi? Kamusi la Biblia nililolitaja hapo juu limejaribu kulirahisisha tatizo hili kwa kusema tu kuwa Musa, aliyekuwa akiyasahihisha, matusi hayo hakuyakomesha mara moja; hakukomesha ndoa za wake wengi mara moja bali alijaribu kuwashauri watu kutooa wake wengi. Hili ni dai lisiloweza kutolewa hoja za kuliunga mkono, kwa sababu Musa mwenyewe alioa wake wawili. Mmoja aliitwa Zipporah binti wa Yethro (ajulikanayo sana katika Uislamu kwa jina la Shuaib), na mwingine alikuwa wa kabila la Kushi ambaye Musa alimuoa katika mwaka wa pili wa safari ya Waisraeli katika jangwa. (Hesabu, 12:1). Hakuna aya yoyote ya Agano la Kale au maandishi mengine itajayo kuwa Zip- porah hakuwa hai wakati Musa alipomuoa yule mwanamke Mkushi. Kwa vyovyote vile Musa na Manabii wengine kabla yake wahusikavyo; sasa twawajia manabii wa baada ya huku kutoshawishi. Ndoa za wake wengi ziliendelea kufanyika hatabaada ya Musa, na Gideoni, Elkanah Sauli, Rehoboam na wengine wengi. Kwa maelezo zaidi soma vitabu vya Biblia vifutitavyo: Waamuzi, 8:30, I Samueli, 1:2, 2 Samueli, 12:8, 21:8. Mtume Daudi alioa suria na wake wengi nje ya mji wa Yerusalemu (II Samueli 5:13). Mtume Suleiman alikuwa na wake mia saba binti za kifalme na masuria mia tatu. (I Wafalme, 11:3). 8

12 Sasa twajakwenye muda wa baada ya madundisho ya Yesu Kristo. Bwana S. V. Mir Ahmad Ali amaandika katika Tafsiri yake ya Qur ani hivi:- Mara kwa mara inadaiwa kuwa Ukristo umeharimisha ndoa za wake wengi na kumlazimisha kila mume kuoa mke mmoja tu. Hakuna chochote kile kilicho mbali zaidi ya ukweli. Bwana Ameer Ali, akizungumzia kuweko kwa ndoa za wake wengi miongoni mwa mataifa yote alisema hivi:- Na hivyo inafahamiwa na viongozi wa Kikristo kuwa hakuna ubaya wowote au dhambi katika kuoa wake wengi. Mmoja wa Mababa wa Kanisa la Kikristo, Mtakatifu Augustino, alitangazia kuwa kuoa wake wengi si jinai mahali ambapo jambo hilo huhesabiwa kuwa ni halali, na Watengenezaji wa dini (Mujadd) wa Ujerumani hata wale walioishi katika karne ya kumi na sita wali- ruhusu na walitangazia kuwa mtu kuoa mke wa pili au hata wa tatu kula unyumba na yule wa kwanza kunasihi, ikiwa hapana budi au kwa sababu yoyote ile nyingine. (Soma kitabu kiitwacho Life and Teachings of Mohammad, uk.220 cha Bwanaa Ameer Ali na kingine kiitwacho Mohamedan Law, juz.ii, uk.23 cha Bwana huyo huyo). Historia yaoneysha kuwa wakati Ukristo ulioingia katika mji wa Rome, tabia ya mume kuoa wake wengi ilitambuliwa na Wafalme wa mwanzoni wa Kikristo wanaonekana kuwa waliuthibitisha uhalali wake. Bwana Ameer Ali anasema:- Mfalme Valentiniah II alitunga sheria inayowaruhusu raia wote wa Milki yake iwapo wanapenda kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja mmoja kufanya hivyo; wala haio nyeshwi katika historia ya siku hizo kuwa Maaskofu na viongozi wa Kikristo waliipinga sheria hii. Zaidi ya hapo, Wafalme wa Urumi waliomfuata walioa wake zaidi ya mmoja mmoja, na raia wao hawakufanya ajizi katika kufuata mifano yao. Hata viongozi wa Kanisa (kama vile maaskofu, mapadre na mashemasi) mara kwa mara walikuwa na wake zaidi ya mmoja mmoja. Hali hii iliendelea hadi katika muda wa Yustono ambaye.... yu chanzo cha sheria maarufu sana za Yustino. Lakini sheria hizi zimechukua mambo kidogo sana kutoka kwenye Ukristo. Mshauri mkuu wa Yustino alikuwa mlahidi na kafiri. 9

13 Hata kule kukomeshwa kwa ndoa za wake wengi kulishindwa kuondoa fikara za jambo hili akilini mwa watu. (Soma kitabu kiitwacho Life and Teachings of Mohammad, uk , cha Bwana Ameer Ali, kama kilivyonakiliwa katika tanbihi (Foot-note) Namb. 499 ya Tafsiri ya Qur ani ya Bwana S. V. Mir Ahmad Ali). Ni lazima tutaje hapa kuwa Sheria za Yustino ziliwekwa katika karne ya 13. Hii ina maana kuwa mpaka mnamo karne ya kumi na tatu hakukuwepo uharamu wowote wa ndoa za wake wengi katika Ukristo, Vifungu vifuatavyo vilivyonakiliwa kutoka katika kitabu kiitwacho An Apology for Mohammed and the Koran cha John Davenport, vinaonyesha wazi wazi kuwa ndoa za wake wengi hazikukomeshwa na viongozi wa Kikristo hadi mnamo karne ya 16 hivi:- Mtakatifu Chrysostom, akizungumzia kuhusu Ibrahim na Hagar, anasema, Mambo haya hayakuharimishwa. Hivyo Mtakatifu Augustino aligundua kuwa iko desturi isiyo na lawama yoyote ya mume mmoja kuwa na wake wengi, desturi ambayo wakati ule iliweza kufanyika kihaki na ambayo siku hizi haiwezi kufanyika ila kwa njia ya kipotovu, kwa sababu, kwa ajili ya kuongeza kizazi cha baadaye, hakuna sheria yoyote iliyokomesha wingi wa wake. (Soma maelezo ya kitabu kiitwacho De Jure cha Grotius, juz. 1, uk. 268). Boniface, aliyekuwa kasisi wa Ujerumani ya Chini, alimuuliza Papa Gregory, mnamo mwaka 726, ili kujua ni chini ya masharti gani mume anaweza kuruhusiwa kuoa wake wawili. Gregory alimjibu mnamo Tarehe 22 Novemba ya mwaka huo huo, kwa maneno haya:- Kama mke akishambuliwa na maradhi ambayo yanamfanya asiweze kuendelea katika tendo la kinyumba na mumewe basi mume anaweza kuoa mke mwingine, lakini hata hivyo ni lazima ampatie huyo mkewe mgonjwa mahitaji yote ya lazima na misaada mingineyo. Vitabu vingi vimechapishwa kuitetea ndoa ya wake wengi; hata na waandishi walio Wakristo. Bernardo Ochinus, Jenerali wa Chama cha 10

14 Capuchins, alichapisha katika karne ya kumi na sita, akizungumzia na akiunga mkono ndoa za wake wengi, na wakati huo huo yalitokea maandishi mengine zaidi yaungayo mkono ndoa za wake wengi. Mwandishi huyu jina lake hasa ni Lysarus, na alijipa jina la kubunia la Theophilus Aleuthes. Lakini mtetezi maarufu sana wa desturi ya kuoa wake wengi ni Bwana John Milton ambaye katika maandishi yake yaitwayo A Treatise on Christian Doctrine uk. 237, baada ya kunakili vifungu fulani fulani kutoka katika Biblia vinavyounga mkono ndoa ya wake wengi, alisema Zaidi ya hapo, Mwenyezi Mungu, kifumbo (Ezekieli, 23) anajieleza kuwa alijitwalia wake wawili, Ahelah na Aholiah, aina ya msemo ambao Jehovah asingeliweza kuutumia, hasa katika hali hiyo ya kimfano, wala, yeye mwenyewe katu asingejitwalia tabia hiyo, kama tendo hilo linaloiashir lingelikuwa lisoheshima au la kuaibisha. Ni chini ya misingi ipi basi, tendo laweza kufikiriwa kuwa ni lenye kuvunja heshima au lenye kuaibisha, ambalo halikatazwi mtu yeyote yule hata katika Injili; kwa maana kuiruhusu desturi hii kuweza kuendelea hakubatilishi sheria zozote za kijamii zilizokuwepo kabla... Mwishoni, napinga kama ifuatavyo, kutoka Waraka kwa Waebrania, xiii:4, Desturi ya kuoa wake wengi huitwa ndoa au uasherati au zinaa. Mtume hakutambua hali yeyote ile zaidi ya hizo. Heshima za wahenga wengi waliooa wake zaidi ya mmoja mmoja, nafikiri, humzuia kila mtu kulifikiria jambo hilo kuwa li uasherati au zinaa, kwa sababu, Wazushi na wazinzi Mwenyezi Mungu atawahukumu, ambapo wahenga walikuwa hasa ndio waliopewa hisani hizi, kama yeye mwenyewe ashuhudiavyo. Basi kama ndoa za wake wengi zikiwa ndoa halisi, zitakuwa halali na pia zitakuwa ndoa za kuheshimika: Kufuatana na Nabii huyo huyo, ndoa ni kitu cha kuheshimika. 11

Bwana John Milton hapo mwanzoni aliandika katika kitabu chake hicho hicho kiitwacho A Treatise On Christian Doctrine, Ukurasa kama ifuatavyo:- Katika ufafanuzi nilioutoau (yaani wa ndoa), sikusema kufuatana na maoni ya kawaida tu, ya mume mmoja mke mmoja, ili nisije, kwa kukosea, nikawashitaki wahenga watukufu na ambao ni nguzo za imani yetu, Ibrahimu na wengineo, waliokuwa na wake zaidi ya mmoja mmoja kwa wakati mmoja, ili nisilazimike kutoa kizazi kilichotokana nao katika utakatifu wa Mwenyezi Mungu, ambacho ni wana wa Israeli wote, na ambao huo utakatifu wenyewe waliutengenezewa. Lakini kwa vile wazo hili litakuwa upuzi mtupu, kutomheshlmu Mwenyezi Mungu, udhalimu mkubwa sama, na vile vile ni mfano wa tabia ya hatari sana katika dini kulihesabu kuwa ni dhambi jambo ambalo kwa kweli si dhambi hata kidago. Inaonekana kweli kuwa, kwa vyovyote vile kutokana na suala la kuuchukulia uhalali wa ndoa za wake wengi kuwa ni upuzi mtupu, ni muhimu sana kwetu kutoa uamuzi thabiti. DESTURI YA KUOA WAKE WENGI KATIKA UISLAMU Kwanza kabisa, ni lazima ikumbukwe kuwa Wahindu, Wababeli, Waajemi, Waatheni, Wayahudi na Waarabu wa kabla ya Uislamu hawakuwa na kiwango maalum cha idadi ya wake mtu aruhusiwao kuoa. Uislamu uliweka kiwango na ukaizungushia ndoa hiyo boma la masharti magumu. 12

16 Tabia ya mume kwa wakeze wote isitoe nafasi katika wakali wowote ule kuzichoma nyoyo zao, kijicho, kutoridhika, kutotosheka na kuudhishwa kwa yeyote yule. Uisiwepo ukatili, uonevu, kuvutiwa upande fulani au upendeleo kwa upande wa mume. Inategemewa na inaonekana kuwa, amani, upatano na utulivu vinadumu mwenye nyumba ambamo mume anazifuata barabara sheria za Kiislamu kuhusu haki sawa baina ya wakeze katika chakula chao na utunzaji wao kwa ujumla. Kama mume hawezi kuutimiza usawa huu basi hataruhusiwa kuoa zaidi ya mke mmoja. Kuhusu sheria hii ya idadi ya wake na usawa baina yao, Qur ani inaamrisha hivi:- ل ث و ر ب اع و ث ن ث س اء م ن الن م م ك ا ط اب ل... ف انك ح وا م ل ا ت ع د ل وا ف و اح د ة ت م أ ف إ ن خ ف... basi oeni mnaowapenda katika wanawake, wawili na watatu na wanne; lakini mkiogopa kuwa hamwezi kufanya uadilifu, basi (oeni) mmoja tu... (Qur ani, 4:3), Ili kuuhakikisha ule usawa na haki, ni lazima yule mume ajitosheleze kiuchumi ili aweze kumpatia kila mke chakula cha kutosha, nguo za kutosha na mahitaji mengineyo ya lazima. Kila mke apatiwe nyumba yake tofauti, ambamo mumewe tu anaweza kuingia bila ya kumtaka ruhusa mkewe kwanza. Ni lazima mume atumie muda (ngono) uliosawa katika nyumba ya kila mke. Ni lazima ayagawe mausiku yake sawa sawa baina ya wake zake na lazima amtembelee kila mke kila asubuhi. Afanyapo hivi ataweza kupata nafasi ya kumwangalia mkewe kila siku na atadumisha uhusiano mwema baina yake na kila mke. Ukweli ni kwamba, kuwekwa kwa masharti haya, kumeifanya desturi ya kuoa wake wengi kuwa ni jambo gumu miongoni mwa Waislamu, na ndoa hizi huonekana chache sana miongoni mwa jamii za Kiislamu

17 DESTURI KUOA WAKE WENGI NI JAMBO LA KAWAIDA Sasa hatuna budi kuzichunguza hoja za Wakristo dhidi ya desturi hii ya kuoa wake wengi. Je, ni kweli kuwa desturi hii ya kuoa wake wengi inapingana na maisha ya kawaida? Kweli na gunduzi tulizonazo vinalijibu swali hili kwa kukanusha. Bwana G. R. Scotts anasema, Mwanaume ni lazima aoe wake wengi na maendeleo ya ustarabu yanaiendeleza ndoa hii ya asili. Profesa Russel, mwanachuoni wa Kimarikani, akisema katika mkutano mmoja uliofanytka katika Chuo Kikuu cha California (U.S.A.), ulioitishwa kujadili Haki za Jamii alisema hivi:- Kuoa mke mmoja na kujifunga katika mke mmoja tu kwa muda wote wa maisha, si jambo la kawaida wala la kihoja. Kisha, baada ya majadiliano marefu, aliyaeleza mafafanuzi yake kwa kifupi hivi, mwanaume hanabudi kuukubali utarati wa kuoa wake wengi kuwa ni jambo muhimu sana katika juhudi zetu za kuendeleza kuwapo kwa mwanadamu hapa duniani. 18 Tukiwa bado tuingali twalizungumzia jambo hili, hatunabudi kulichunguza dai lile lisemalo kuwa Muumba, aliihifadhi idadi ya wanaume sawa kabisa na idadi ya wanawake. Hili ni dai lisiloweza kuthibitishwa kwa njia yoyote ile. Ziko nchi kadhaa ikiwemo Tanzania ambazo idadi ya wanawake inazidi sana ile ya wanaume. Kufuatana na hesabu ya watu iliyotolewa muda mrefu kidogo uliopita, katika Jamhuri ya Kisoshalisti ya Urusi, idadi ya wanawake ni karibuni milioni 21 zaidi ya ile ya wanaume. Na hata kama tukikubali, kwa ajili ya mahojiano tu, kuwa, Muumba anaumba idadi sawa ya waume na wake, je, hii inathibitisha kuwa hakutakuwepo na haja yoyote kwa mume kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja? Kati ya hao wavulana 1,000, ni wavulana 300 ambao watafikia utu uzima. Hawa watakuwa wale waliozaliwa tangu mwaka wa kwanza hadi wa sita ambao watakuwa na umri kati ya miaka 15 hadi

19 Kama jamii ile itatumia desturi ya mume mmoja kuwa na mke mmoja, wale wavulana 300 watawaoa wale wasichana 300. Sasa nini hali ya baadaye ya wale wasichana 250 waliobakia? Hivyo, ile idadi sawa ya wavulana na wasichana inayofikiriwa si sawa kihesabu na kimaelezo vile vile. Pia jambo moja zaidi ni lazima likumbukwe. Kabla ya kuudai usawa huu wa idadi, wanawake wote wenye siha njema ni lazima wapitie katika muda kila mwezi, ambao hali zao hazifai kwa tendo la kiunyumba. Lakini mwanaume hapotezi utaratibu wake wa hamu ya tendo la kiunyumba wakati wowote. Basi dawa yake ni nini iwapo hawezi kujizuia hamu yake ya mke katika wakati ambao mkewe yu katika hedhi? Ni kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja, jambo lililo halali au kufanya uasherati, jambo likatazwalo katika kila dini. Zaidi ya hizi sababu zilikataazo dai la makasisi wa Kikristo, vile vile ziko hali fulani zisababishwazo na mume ambazo zalikanusha dai hili. Hebu chukulia kwa mfano vita. Huko Ulaya, wakati wa vita ya miaka Thelathini ( A.D.) na katika vita mbili za dunia zilizopita (ile ya l na ile ya ), wanaume wengi sana waliuwawa, kiasi ambacho hawakuwepo wanaume wa kutosha kuwaoa wasichana na wajane wa waume waliofia vitani. Katika Shirikisho la Ujerumani ya Magharibi tu, baada ya vita ya pili ya dunia, walikuwepo wanawake milioni sita ambao hawakuweza kupata waume. Kikundi cha wanawake hao waliiomba serikali kutoa sheria ambayo itawaruhusu waume kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja, ili nao waweze kupata waume. Walitoa ombi hilo chini ya misingi kuwa sheria hiyo itawapatia msaada wa kiuchumi na usalama wa kijamii na kuzitosheleza hali zao za kiasili. Kanisa lilipinga ombi hili, na wale wanawake milioni sita wasiokuwa na msaada wowote ule waliachwa wajizuie wenyewe na zinaa. Bwana Bertrand Russell anasema:- Na katika nchi zote walikokuweko wanawake wengi, ni udhalimu ulio wazi kabisa kuwa, hao wanawake ambao kwa umuhimu wa kihesabu, iliwabidi wakae bila kuolewa wakatiliwe mbali kabisa na tendo la kiunyumba. 20 JE, KUOA WAKE ZAIDI YA MMOJA KUNASABABISHA TAMAA ZA KIMWILI? Kifungu hicho tulichokinakili hapo juu kimetufikisha kwenye dai jingine la makasisi wa Kikristo lisemalo kuwa kuoa wake wengi kunashawishi ashki na tamaa za kimwili. Tumekwishaeleza kwa hesabu na kwa ukweli wa kihistoria kuwa desturi ya mke mmoja kwa mume mmoja imeyalazimisha na hadi leo inayalazimisha mamilioni na mamilioni ya wasichana wenye bahati mbaya kuishi maisha mabaya, na vivyo hawa waandishi bado wana ujuyi wa kutuambia kuwa kuoa wake wengi (jambo ambalo ndio dawa ya pekee kwa maradhi haya) kunasababisha tamaa za kimwili! Vifungu vifuatavyo, vilivyochukuliwa kutoka katika kitabu kiitwacho Polygamy in Islam - tulicho kitaja mwanzoni, vinatoa picha ya kweli ya Ndoa za mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja za watu wa nchi za Magharibi. Uislamu unawaruhusu wafuasi wake ndoa halali zaidi ya ile ya kwanza na baada ya kuruhusu uwezekano halali na wa juu zaidi wa kuishindia nguvu ya tamaa za kimwili, umetoa adhabu kali sana na yenye kuogofya sana kwa kosa la uasherati, kwa sababu uasherati huharibu amani na utulivu uliyomo majumbani; hutia shaka kuhusu ubaba wa mtoto na uhalali wa kurithi; na matokeo yake ni kuvunja ndoa, huharibu jamii na talaka. Bwana Bertrand Russell anasema kwa kukua kwa uhuru wa wanawake, kumetokea uwezekano mkubwa wa ukafiri wa mambo ya kiunyumba kuliko ilivyokuwa hapo mwanzoni. Uwezekano huu umezaa fikara; fikara zimezaa hamu na katika kutokuwepo kwa unyofu wa kidini, hamu hii huzaa kulitenda hilo tendo lenyewe. 21 Kwa kweli, desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi inafikiriwa kuwa ni kuvunja haki za wanawake, lakini kimatendo hawa watu wenye fikara za mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja wanaendelea kufanya ndoa za wake wengi za kihila, za kisiri na zi kidanganyifu kwa kuwanajisi kisiri wake, mabinti na maumbu za watu wengine, Desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi inafikiriwa na watu hawa kuwa ni jambo ovu lakini wake wasio wa kihalaii wanawekwa pasi na shaka yoyote. Hakuna mboni za macho zifunuliwazo kwa ajili ya fujo za mambo ya Kiasherati. Vishawishi vinatolewa kwa njia ya nguo ziwawekazo watu nusu uchi, uhuru wa kuchanganyika na wageni, matangazo yaonyeshayo wanawake walio uchi, matangazo yaashiriyo matendo ya kiunyumba, vitu vinavyoonyesha mwingiliano wa kiunyumba na uchaiu katika masenema ambako masanamu ya umbo la kuonekana yanaonekana yakisogea kufuatana na muziki wa kushawishi watu. Annie Besant ameandika kuhusu jambo hili hivi:- Kuna ndoa za kubunia tu za mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja katika nchi za Magharibi, lakini kwa hakika kuna desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi isiyo na madaraka. Bibi hutupwa mwanaume anapochoka nae, na pole pole bibi huyu huzama na kuwa mwanamke wa mitaani: kwa maana yule mpenzi wa kwanza hana jukumu lolote tena kuhusu maisha ya baadaye ya bibi huyu: na bibi huyu yu mbaya mara mia kuliko mwanamke anayehifadhiwa na mama katika nyumba za jamii zenye desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi. Tunapoyaona maelfu ya wanawake wenye taabu, wanaijaa mitaa ya miji ya nchi za Magharibi nyakati za usiku, kwa hakika ni lazima tuhisi kuwa haipasiki kwa vinywa vya watu wa Magharibi kuulaumu Uislamu kuwa desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi. Ni bora kwa mwanamke, ni furaha kwa mwanamke, na ni heshima kwa mwanamke kuishi katika desturi ya Kiislamu ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi wakiwa wameungana kwa mume mmoja tu huku akishika mtoto aliyezaliwa katika ndoa halali mikononi mwake na akiwa anazungukwa na heshima kuliko kuhongwa, kutupwa katika mitaa pengine ukiwa na mtoto wa haramu, nje ya Sheria, akiwa hana hifadhi yoyote na hana uangalizi, kusumbuliwa na wapitanjia usiku hadi usiku, 18

22 kufanywa kuwa asiyefaa kuwa mama wa nyumbani na atwezwaye na watu wote. Bwana George Bernard Show aliwashauri watu wa Ulaya kuitumia desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi, ili kuiokoa Ulaya kutokana na mafuriko ya uasherati. Mwandishi mwingine wa nchi za Magharibi Bwana J. E. McFarlance; ameandika katika kitabu chake kiitwacho The Case for Polygamy or The Case Against the System of Monogamous Marriage:- Japo swali hili lifikiriwe kijamii, kiakhlaq au kidini, inaweza kuelezeka wazi kuwa desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi haipingani na kiwango cha juu cha ustaraabu. Wazo hili linatoa dawa kwa matatizo ya nchi za Magharibi yanayoziharibu jamii; njia nyingineyo isiyo hii inaendelezwa na kuzidisha ukahaba, uhawala na inaudhi uwanawali. Askofu; mmoja wa Ibadan (nchini Nigeria), Askofu Odotula, alitoa mwanga mwingine kuhusu swala hili katika mkutano wa kidini uliofanyika mjini Toronto (nchini Kanada). Alisema: Nchi za Magharibi, kwa kuikomesha sheria hii (ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi) wanajifanyia mambo kinafiki, kwa maana kutokea kwa talaka za mara kwa mara, kunaonyesha kuwa hakika wanaitumia desturi hii (ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi). Na kwa kweli Askofu huyo hakuwa peke yake (katika kuutambua ukweli huu). Hata mapema kabisa katika karne iliyopita, Wakuu wa Kanisa la Kikristo waligundua kuwa desturi ya Kislamu ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi, ni bora kabisa kuliko ile desturi ya watu wa Magharibi ya mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja. Muhashamu Kanani (Padre aliye mjumbe wa halmashauri ya jimbo la Askofu ambalo huitwa Dayasisi) Issac Taylor, L.L.D. akizungumzia kuhusu Mohamedanism (Uislamu) katika mkutano wa Kanisa uliofanyika mjini Wolverhampton (nchini Uingereza) mnamo tarehe 17 Oktoba 1887 alisema:- Kwa sababu ya desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi, nchi za Kiislamu ni huru kutokana na maskini, jambo liletalo shutuma kubwa katika Ukristo 19

23 kuliko ile iletwayo na desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi katika Uislamu. Hii Desturi iliyorekabishwa sana ya nchi za Waislamu ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi ina fedheha kidogo sana kwa wanawake na madhara kidogo sana kwa mwanaume kuliko ile desturi yenye ghasia ya mke mmoja kuoa mume wengi (desturi ya Watu wa Ulaya kuoa mke mmoja na kuendesha zinaa) ambayo i tusi kwa miji ya Kikristo na ambayo haijulikani kabisa katika Uislamu. Na karibuni hivi, mtu kama vile Dakta Billy Graham alisema:- Ukristo haunabudi kuafikiana (na Waislaimu) kuhusu swali la desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi. Kama Ukristo wa siku hizi hauwezi kufanya hivyo, basi hiyo ni hasara juu yake wenyewe. Uislamu umeiruhusu desturi ya mume mmoja kuoa wake wengi kuwa suluhisho la maovu ya kijamii, na umeruhusu kiwango fulani cha uhuru wa ubinadamu lakini ndani ya mipaka ya sheria. Nchi za Kikristo zinaionyesha sana desturi ya mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja, lakini kwa hakika wao nao wanaitumia desturi hii ya mume mmoja kuwa na wake wengi. Hakuna hata mtu mmoja asiyeujua mchezo wa mwanamke wa nje wa jamii ya Kimagharibi. Katika suala hili, kimsingi, Uislamu ni dini ya kiaminifu, na unamruhusu Mwislamu kuoa mke wa pili iwapo ni lazima kukatazwa kabisa aina zote za matendo ya mapenzi ya siri, ili kuiongoza vizuri mienendo ya kiutu ya jamii. JE, DESTURI YA MUME KUOA WAKE WENGI HUZIDHURU FIKARA ZA WANAWAKE? Hoja ya tatu ni ile isemayo kuwa desturi ya mume kuoa wake wengi ina hasara za kijamii, na huzidhuru fikara za wanawake. Tumekwishaona kuwa tabia ya mume kuoa wake wengi i mbali kabisa na kuzaa hasara za kijamii, na kuwa ni hiyo desturi ya kubunia ya mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja ambayo i mzizi wa sababu za kupamba kila mahali kwa dhuluma za kijamii katika nchi za 20

24 kimagharibi. Sasa, tunaweza kulieleza jambo hilo la madhara kwa fikara za wanawake kwa kifupi sana. Mtu atajiuliza kama desturi hii iliopo ya nchi za Kikristo inayoruhusu ndoa za kiharamu, haidhuru fikara za wake ambao huwaona waume zao wakiwayawaya na kila aina ya wanawake waliopewa uhuru wa kufanya walitakalo. Kwa vyovyote vile jamii za Kiislamu zihusikavyo, matukio kama haya si mageni, mke anapomshauri mumewe kuoa mke wa pili. Mara nyingi yeye mwenyewe kuchagua mke wakuolewa na mumewe. Maandishi ya watu wa Magharibi hayana uzito wowote katika jambo hili, kwa maana hawaishi katika jamii za Kiislamu, na kile wakiandikacho kimetegemeana na machukulio na mawazo yao tu. Kama yangelikuwepo majadiliano kuhusu jambo hili, yangelitegemeana na taarifa zilizokusanywa kutoka katika jamii za Kiislamu. Kufuatana na taarifa iliyoandikwa katika gazeti liitwalo Ittilaat (litolewalo kila siku) ya mjini Tehran (Namba 13114) mtu mmoja aliyekuwa na wake watatu aliiendea Mahakama ya Sheria za Ndoa kuomba kibali cha kuoa mke wa nne. Wakeze watatu wote walipendezwa na wakaidhinisha hiyo ndoa iliyotakiwa kufungwa. Mwandishi wa gazeti wa Ittilaat alimwendea mama wa yule mchumba kuchunguza chanzo cha tukio hili. Aligundua kuwa walikuwepa wanawake 2,000 katika kijiji kile ukilinganisha na wanaume 400 (nusu yao wakiwa bado waingali chini ya umri wa miaka l4). Mama wa yule mchumba aliona kuwa ni bora kumuozesha binti wake kwa mume aliyekuwa tayari keshaoa wake watatu kuliko kumfuga binti wake asiyeolewa katika uhai wake wote uliobakia. Gazeti hilo hilo (Namba ) lilichapisha habari zifuatazo:- Mke kijana ambae hakuzaa, na matokeo yake ikawa aliudhika sana aliiendea Mahakama ya Sheria za Ndoa na kuwaomba wamshauri mumewe aoe mke wa pili. 25 Nimejaribu kumshauri aoe mke mwingine lakini hakutaka. Hivyo naiomba Mahakama hii kuingilia kati. Ninaahidi kabisa kuishi kwa amani na ushirikiano na mkewe wa pili. Gazeti hilo hilo (Namba 13091) lilimwelezea mwanamke mwingine akisema:- Miaka michache iliyopita, mume wangu alinioa ili wana wawili wa nduguye aliyefariki wasikose mlezi. Baadaye tulipata mtoto wetu wenyewe, lakini alifariki baada ya mwezi mmoja tu. Mume wangu ni mdogo kwa umri kuliko mimi, na niliamua kumtafutia mke mdogo. Sasa nilishafaulu kumpatia msichana mwmgine. Hii ni mifano michache ionyeshayo kuwa desturi ya kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja haidhuru fikara za wanawake. Ni kweli kuwa yapo matukio ya kutoafikiana na ugomvi katika nyumba ya mume mwenye wake wengi. Lakini kutoafikiana na ugomvi kama huu vile vile hupatikana katika nyumba ya mume mwenye mke mmoja tu. Je, waandishi wa Kimagharibi wangelishauri kukomeshwa kwa Ndoa kwa sababu tu kuwa inasababisha matatizo ya nyumbani, ugomvi na kutopatana ambako wakati mwingine huzaa talaka? DESTURI YA KUOA WAKE ZAIDI YA MMOJA NA UZAZI WA MAJIRA Hoja hii inatokana na ujinga. Katika Uislamu mwanaume anawajibikiwa kumtimizia mkewe au wakeze na watoto wote mambo yote muhimu kwa maisha yao. Huu ni wajibu wa lazima kutimizwa, kwa vyovyote vile. Kama mume anayafuata barabara mafundisho ya Kiislamu, ni lazima afikirie mara mbili kabla ya kuoa tena kama ataweza kuyatimiza mahitaji muhimu ya kifedha na wajibu mwingineo kuhusu huyo mke mwingine na watoto wake. Kama hali yake ya kiuchumi haimruhusu, ni lazima aache kujitia katika ile ndoa mpya. Hivyo basi, suala la matatizo ya kiuchumi halizuki hata kldogo. Hivyo, kwa maneno ya Bwana John Davenport:- 22

Werottere wa Karatina (nchini Kenya) iliyochapishwa katika gazeti liitwalo Sunday Post (la Nairobi, Kenya) la tarehe 19 Agosti, Bwana Werottere anaandika hivi:- DESTURI YA KUOA WAKE ZAIDI YA MMOJA AU UMALAYA? KATIKA UCHUNGUZI niliofanya ili kutafuta sababu za kuongezeka kwa Umalaya na kuendelea kwa talaka katika Wilaya ya Nyeri, nimegundua sababu nyingi. Lakini ile iliyonivutia sana ni ile ya kuwa wanawake wamewazidi wanaume kwa idadi. Labda utapendelea kujua kuwa ukiachilia mbali jamii chache sana, wasicha- na ni wengi kuliko wavulana mara nyingi: 5-3, 4-3, 2-1, 6-2, 4-1, na kadhalika. Nambari hizi zaonyesha kuwa karibuni wanawake ni theluthi mbili za watu wote wa nchi hii. Kwa kawaida ni mvulana amwendeaye msichana anapoona kuwa anafaa kumuoa; msichana hungojea tu afuatiwe na yeyote yule ata kayempenda. Inaaminiwa na watu wote hasa Wakristo kuwa, desturi ya mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja iendelezwe. Hii ina maana kuwa nusu ya wasichana wote 23

27 hawataolewa kabisa. Kanisa limekaa kimya kuhusu wapi iende hii nusu ya wasichana ambao hawaolewi. Kanisa linafundisha kuwa Biblia humwongoza mwanaume kuwa awe na mke mmoja tu. Vivyo twawajua watu watakatifu katika Biblia waliowahi kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja mmoja. Hata hivyo inaelekea kuwa kupo kutoafikiana. Hakika, watu wanazipendelea juhudi za sasa za serikali za kuitawala idadi ya watu kwa kuanzisha mipango ya Uzazi wa Majira; wanatoa maoni yao kuhusu baadhi ya mashirika ya kidini kama vile Uislamu ambao huiruhusu desturi ya kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja kwa wafuasi wao. Kutokana na mambo yalivyokuwa, sasa twajua kuwa ingawa desturi ya mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja ilishabahiwa kuwa na jamii zenye amani, jamii nyingi sana ziitumiazo desturi hii hawajaithibitisha hali hii. Hatujafaulu kuwaongoza jinsi gani wayakabili maisha - hasa kama ujuavyo kuwa maisha yamekuwa makali sana kwao. Hasa inapotokea kuwa wengi wa wasichana wanakosa ujuzi wa kuwawezesha kujipatia mahitaji yao ya maisha. Mapadre wa Kanisa, wakulima maskini, wataalamu wa uchumi, watawala na wengineo wanakubali kabisa kuwa mke asiyeolewa atajitahidi kujipatia maisha yake hata kwa Umalaya, labda(?) Mtu mmoja amenielezea akisema, Sasa umefika wakati ambao Makanisa ya Kikristo yaichunguze hali ya mambo ilivyo na kuilegeza sheria ya mume mmoja kwa mke mmoja ili kusaidia kuiondoa hali mbaya inayoukabili ulimwengu hivi sasa. Na mwanamke mmoja wa Kikristo alinielezea: Sitajali kuwa mke wa pili wa mwanaume nimpendae. Maisha huwa yakukatisha tamaa mwanamke akosapo ulinzi wa mume. Ni afadhali (kuwa mke wa pili wa mume) kuliko kukaa bila ya mume. 24

28 Malaya mmoja maarufu sana alisema: Nilipopata mtoto wa kiume na ikanichukua miaka mitano bila ya kuolewa, maisha ya kila siku yalinisukumizia kwenye umalaya. Sina njia nyingine ya kufanya. Ninaweza kuwa mke wa pili hata wa tatu kama nikipendwa. Maisha yamekuwa ya hatari sana. Waziri mmoja Mkristo aliniambia kuwa, ingawa anakubali kuwa desturi ya kuoa wake zaidi ya mmoja itapunguza umalaya kwa kiwango fulani, haamini kuwa itaiondoa hali hiyo kabisa. Anaendelea kusema kuwa kwa Uzazi wa Majira, tatizo hili litaondoka hapo baadaye. Lakini bado hajapata jibu kwa swali la nini kifanywe kuhusu tatizo hili hivi sasa. Kwa ujumla, wengi wa watu niliozungumza nao - wanyumba au waseja wanalitaka Kanisa kuufikiria msimamo wake kuhusu jambo hili ili watu waweze kuwa huru kuchagua kuwa na mke mmoja au zaidi ya mmoja kutegemeana na utajiri wa mtu.
