3 Preface The compiation of agricutura statistics contained in this pubication is in response to the needs of those who are interested and invoved in agricutura activities on Guam. Farmers /and prospective investors often ask for information about Guam production, imports and prices of produce. Administrators, panners and poicy makers in vaious pubic agenc±es frequenty inquire about agricutura statistics for panning and poicy formuation purposes. Researchers in various agricutura fieds are frustrated by the ack of basic agricutura data needed for writing proposas for grants and conducting research. This is especiay true when reiabe time series data are needed for making projections. This pubication is by no means comprehensive but it is hoped that the dissemination of information contained herein wi assist many peope who are invoved in and concerned with agricutura deveopment on Guam. Since statistica data provide an important basis for decision making and evauating agricutura activities over a period of time, their avai~biity shoud ead to better panning, improved decision making processes, and effective poicy formuation. However, the statistica information presented must be used very carefuy. For exampe, Tabes 18 and 23 show that whie the popuation on Guam in 1977 was 99,600, there were 26,052 and 90,634 reguar and emergency Food Stamp recipients in 1976, a tota of 116,686. In Tabe 39, per acre yied of Chinese cabbage increased from 5.75 tons in 1978 to 121 tons in It is doubtfu that Guam farmers sod $425,000 worth of produce to the miitary outets in 1979 as reported in Tabe 50. Therefore, users of this pubication are advised to use discretion. THAO KHAMOUI Agricutura Economist Agricutura Experiment Station University of Guam i
