1 FOOD FRAUD ALERTS Uge Highlights: Highlights concerning Miscellaneous fruit - inedible peel, large A hepatitis A outbreak in Australia has been Hepatitis A outbreak linked to frozen pomegranate arils from Egypt. So far 7 people have been sickened linked to Egyptian pomegranate arils in New South Wales with hepatitis A genotype 1B, with all of them reporting they had eaten the product. Highlights concerning Seafood A RASFF alert has been released from Italy in regard to a scombroid syndrome outbreak Scombroid Syndrome outbreak suspected to be linked to frozen sail- linked to fish from fish from Spain. Spain Highlights concerning Meat and meat products (excluding poultry) An operation carried out by the Food Safety Food fraud uncovered at Spanish meat Service of the General Directorate of Public Health, Ministry of Health and the police in company Spain has uncovered serious food fraud at a meat company which distributed products to restaurants, hotels and schools in Mallorca. Product labels were falsified, products were thawed in hot water and stored without meeting minimum sanitary conditions and some products were having pig blood added to them to increase weight. If products were returned, the affected parts

2 Side 2 af 7 were removed or cleaned, and the products were then frozen again to be sold on to a different customer. 30,000 kg of meat were found with no identification or traceability marks, and canned products were found which were up to 3 years past their expiry date. Highlights concerning Tree nuts (shelled or unshelled) An audit carried out by the EU has found Issues with US aflatoxin controls for deficiencies in the US system to prevent aflatoxin contamination in pistachios. This pistachios exported follows an increase in the number of cases to EU found in the last few years. A previous audit in 2010 contained 4 recommendations which American authorities committed to addressing, however this recent audit found that there is no official control on pistachios being exported to the EU.
