3 Baptisia (False Indigo) are large, native perennials that have a shrubby habit. Long lived, adaptable, and drought resistant, they prefer full sun. They will grow in almost any type of well-drained soil. When young plants are first installed, they do not grow much. They are busy putting out roots. The second year, they will take off, on the way to becoming the big showy plant that they really are. They bloom in late spring or early summer, for two to three weeks. The foliage remains attractive even when the plant is out of bloom. Deer resistant and hardy to Zone or 4, depending on the cultivar. Blue False Indigo Baptisia australis Ht. -4 Wd. 6 - Blue Flower - Sun to Part Shade Strong, arching stems produce small, blue-green leaves. Long, tapering spikes of blue, pea-shaped blooms appear in early summer. The dried seed pods add winter interest. Zone (#4525) Carolina Moonlight False Indigo Baptisia Carolina Moonlight Ht. -4 Wd Yellow Flower - Sun to Part Shade Upright habit with blue-green, clover foliage. Butter yellow, lupine-like flowers atop flower spikes extending well above the foliage in early summer. Spent flowers develop inflated seed pods (to 2½ long) which ripen to charcoal black and have considerable ornamental interest. Zone 4 (#4118) Baptisia DECADENCE Series: These Baptisias were bred and selected to have shorter heights and unique flower colors. They are all Proven Winners selections: DECADENCE Blueberry Sundae False Indigo Baptisia Blueberry Sundae PP2891 Ht. 0-6 Wd Blue Flower - Sun to Part Shade More vibrant indigo blue flowers and a shorter, well-branched habit set this variety apart from the species. Blue-green foliage forms a tight mound. Part of the DECADENCE series. Zone 4 (#4145) 7679 Worthington Rd., Galena, OH 4021 acornfarms@acornfarms.com ph fx
4 DECADENCE Cherries Jubilee False Indigo Baptisia australis Cherries Jubilee PP2891 Ht. 2- Wd. - Maroon/Yellow Flower - Sun to Part Shade Unique maroon and yellow flowers are held above the densely branched blue -green foliage. Flowers age to gold tones. Secondary branching on the stems make for an abundance of blooms. Part of the DECADENCE series. Zone 4 (#4055) DECADENCE Lemon Meringue False Indigo Baptisia australis Lemon Meringue PP24280 Ht. Wd. - Yellow Flower - Sun to Part Shade The bright yellow blooms are carried on charcoal stems. Forms an upright, vase-shaped mound of blue-green foliage. This variety shows more vigor than other yellow Baptisias. Decorative seeds pods in fall. Part of the DECADENCE series. Zone 4 (#5978) DECADENCE Vanilla Cream False Indigo Baptisia australis Vanilla Cream PP2566 Ht. Wd. - Yellow Flower - Sun to Part Shade Spring foliage emerges bronze and matures to blue-green. This contrasts beautifully with its 10 long spikes of pastel yellow buds that open to creamy white flowers. Easy care and drought tolerant. Part of the DECADENCE series. Zone 4 (#5968) DECADENCE Deluxe Pink Lemonade False Indigo Baptisia australis Pink Lemonade PPAF Ht. Wd. - Yellow-Raspberry Bicolor Flower - Sun to Part Shade The first bicolor in the DECADENCE series, this variety has soft yellow flowers that age to dusky raspberry, with both colors appearing at the same time. The charcoal stems really make the colors pop. A Proven Winners selection, growing ½-4 tall with a dense, compact habit. Zone 4 (#4175) 7679 Worthington Rd., Galena, OH 4021 acornfarms@acornfarms.com ph fx
5 PRAIRIEBLUES Lunar Eclipse False Indigo Baptisia australis Lunar Eclipse PP25875 Ht. 2- Wd. - Purple/White/Yellow Flower - Sun to Part Shade The large flowers on this variety start out creamy yellow, then transition to violet and dark purple, creating a two tone effect of purple flowers at the base of the stem and white at the top. A Chicagoland Grows introduction. Part of the PRAIRIEBLUES series. Zone 4 (#485) Purple Smoke False Indigo Baptisia x Purple Smoke Ht. 2- Wd. 2 - Violet Blue Flower - Sun to Part Shade Pale lavender flowers contrast well with the charcoal gray stems. Leaves are smaller than other Baptisias. This beautiful, strong and vigorous grower is a naturally-occurring hybrid of B. australis and B. alba.
