SO, WHAT chicken breasts with feta, garlic and sun-dried tomatoes, dipping plating up with a light butternut mash and a salad of thinly sliced fennel bulb, watercress and pine nuts. Impressed? I have to say I am. Making dinner used to consist of tossing a few chicken pieces into a casserole with veggies and leaving it in the oven until done. Not that there s anything wrong with a casserole, of course anymore. Not after MasterChef. The Ilses, Khayas, Thyses and Lungis of the world have made me realise I too can rise to the occasion, even if I don t have Pete and tense challenges. (Those huddles, incidentally, would have made me paranoid if I d time.) Anyway, point is MasterChef South Africa changed the way I feel about food and I m not the only one (see what two other foodie converts say on page 113). And wasn t it great, the show? Week after week brave contestants sweated over hot stoves to produce dishes they d sometimes never heard of, let alone attempted (remember Jade and that chocolate gateau that refused to stay on the plate). And each week someone went home until only one was standing: Deena, the quiet, unassuming guy who always, when you think back, had something special. (see Andrew s mom s sponge pud on page 48), others a little more taxing (the Cape berry chocolate ganache with cardamom ice cream and pistachio brittle on page 96, for instance) but all are worth trying. Because if you can cook like a MasterChef, you can conquer the world. Okay, maybe not. However, you can become immensely popular and expand your circle of friends because an invitation to one of your dinner in the kitchen concocting cool creations with your chef s knife and pots and pans. 9 TOP 3 MANISHA NAIDU SHE became so exhausted she once fell asleep standing up and admits there were days when all she wanted to do was go home. It was the most intense time of her life but if she could do it all again she would and she wouldn t change a thing. What I learnt about myself and others has been the most profound experience of my life, the 29-year-old mom says. It was a roller-coaster ride of epic proportions and it was over too soon. she starts, she admits, but she knew she was going to see this right through to the end and she very nearly did, bowing out just Husband Thoneshan or Tony as everyone calls him is immensely proud of his wife, even if MasterChef did mean they had to cut their dream honeymoon in India short. Thoneshan, who is head of strategy at Absa Manisha cooked her heart out in the MasterChef kitchen. He took care of 10-year-old Laila, Manisha s daughter from a previous marriage, and they missed her a lot, he confesses. The house was a different place, Tony (32) says. She is always making us laugh and she has this endless energy. Laila found long. As for me, I d just come from honeymoon where we were living and breathing each other and then suddenly she was gone. He was supportive of his wife s decision from the start. Manisha had initially been too scared to enter the competition so Tony, the entry forms on her behalf and drove her Her dish? A simple little concoction of langoustines poached in coriander and lemon with a ginger-infused broth and bisque-style sauce using coconut milk and mustard seeds. All this, she informs us, after she d just had surgery for a precancerous lesion on her ovary. I could barely stand up but I did it, she says proudly. Manisha has always enjoyed experiment- tions and how to make dishes texturally interesting. I ve never been a cookbook when I heard I d made it onto MasterChef, and then only because I thought I should own one. I think of cookbook cooking as a form of plagiarism by food. It s a case of somebody else s skill and my ability to read. Manisha and Tony were in Jodhpur, India, when the call came though saying she d made it to the next audition. The couple set off for home immediately and arrived back after 48 hours of travel, just in time for round two which Manisha sailed through as well (on the menu this time were decon- Tony wasn t surprised I made it but he was concerned about whether I would make it alone for a long period of time if I went further in the show, she admits. Manisha is not without her frailties. She suffered from bulimia and anorexia for years, was a self-mutilator and was so addicted to codeine she spent months in rehab. Between the ages of 18 and 25 my life was terrible, she says. Treatment and meeting the love of her life helped her overcome her problems. Tony may be her rock but he s had an issue of his own to deal with recently. During a power failure at their home in Sandton he was taking the garage door off remote control and onto manual when something ger became stuck in the mechanism. Long story short, the tip stayed behind, he says. TONY WASN T SURPRISED I MADE IT BUT HE WAS CON- CERNED ABOUT WHETHER I WOULD MAKE IT ALONE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME IF I WENT FURTHER IN THE SHOW We went to hospital where the doctors said the bone was too crushed for there to be any chance of the tip being reattached. the door. Manisha clucks sympathetically. She was glad she was around to help if she d still been in the show she probably wouldn t have minutes once a week to speak to our families, she says. It was tough. I d never been on my own before and I was close to breaking point at one stage. But I did it. It was a real test of strength and I know now I am better equipped to handle anything that comes my way. I know I m going to be okay. So what s next? Possibly a TV show, possibly a restaurant of my own, possibly a recipe book. What? A cookbook? Hey, it s okay if people plagiarise her food, she says just not the other way round. (Turn over) MASTERCHEF
