1 Performance of New Vegetable Pepper and Tomato Cultivars Grown in Northwest Ohio 2009 Elaine Grassbaugh 1, Matt Hofelich 2, and Mark Bennett 1 1 Ohio State University Department of Horticulture and Crop Science 2021 Coffey Road Columbus, OH grassbaugh.1@osu.edu 2 OSU/OARDC North Central Ag Research Station 1165 CR 43 Fremont, OH Objective To test new pepper and tomato variety releases ( ) for their performance under northwest Ohio growing conditions and to determine the new releases showing yield potential for Ohio and the Great Lakes area. Materials and Methods Nineteen pepper (bell, jalapeno, banana and poblano) cultivars and 16 tomato (fresh market and roma-type) cultivars were planted in four replications (except roma varieties Plum Regal, BHN 901 yellow, and BSS 712, which were planted in two replications only) at the North Central Ag Research Station (NCARS) in Fremont, Ohio. Cultivar selections were new releases along with some industry standard varieties. Much input was received from seed companies, growers, and industry personnel regarding variety selection and those used as a standard comparison. Tomatoes were seeded into 200-cell plug trays on April 6 and peppers were seeded into 200-cell plug trays on April 13. Tomatoes were transplanted to the field on May 19 and peppers on June 2. Tomatoes were harvested three times (August 18 and 24, and September 3). Peppers were also harvested three times (August 12 and 26 (banana and bell only), and September 3). Results and Discussion Peppers yields of bell varieties ranged from 8.6 to 11.0 T/A but were not significantly different. Average fruit weight of Declaration was significantly larger than that of the industry standard Aristotle or PS1819 (Table 1). Intruder and Karisma average fruit sizes were also larger than fruit of PS Jalapeno varieties showed no differences in marketable T/A or cull T/A but Sayula was smaller in fruit size compared to Chichimeca (Table 1). Banana varieties had no differences in marketable T/A, cull T/A, or average fruit size (Table 1). Poblano varieties had no differences in marketable fruit, but Massive had significantly higher culled fruit levels and smaller average fruit size than Vencendor (Table 1).

2 Tomatoes Eight fresh market varieties showed differences in marketable T/A yield, cull T/A yield, and average fruit size. yields ranged from 32.9 to 48.7 T/A. Polbig, Scarlet Red, Mountain Fresh Plus, and Primo Red had the highest yields, comparing favorably with the industry standard ( Mountain Fresh Plus ) (Table 2). ed fruit ranged from 7.8 to 17.3 T/A with Scarlet Red, Mountain Fresh Plus, Primo Red, and Tasti-Lee having the lowest levels of culled fruit. Roma varieties replicated four times produced marketable T/A yields ranging from 23.4 to 40.3 T/A. Tormenta had the highest yields compared to all but the Piatra entry. However, there were no differences in cull T/A or average fruit weight (Table 2). Romas planted in two replications had marketable yields ranging from 24.9 to 37.7 T/A, however, there were no differences between the three varieties for marketable yields, culls, or average fruit size (Table 2).
