3 Symptoms Occur in Spring includes limb dieback with rough cankers and amber colored gum or total tree collapse May include leaf spots and blast of young flowers, spurs, and shoots Sour sap phase will affect the inner bark it will be brown, fermented, and sour smelling Flecks and pockets of bacterial invasion in bark occur outside canker margins

4 Management Sub-soil the orchard to break up hard-pan areas When planting new or replanting orchards fumigate to reduce ring and root knot nematode populations. Maintain proper nutrition nitrogen being most important Appling low biuret urea before leaf drop reduces canker size in infected trees Annual nematicide treatments October - January can help reduce disease severity

5 Summary 1 gallon per acre of Promax or Zap applied during the months of October - January to suppress and kill ring and root knot nematodes to prevent bacterial almond canker Depending on remaining nematode counts apply additional application of ½ gallon per acre.

6 Past Research Promax and Zap were applied to various vegetables and corn in Mendota, California in 2009 Initial nematode count varied from days prior to planting applied ½ gallon of Promax 14 days after planting crops applied ½ gallon of Zap During application yield improved and tillage reduced Total nematode count dropped to 19-28

7 Past Research The effects of Promax on needle nematodes in organic carrots, lettuce, and conventional potatoes under desert climate as in the Imperial Valley of California in 2009 Initial nematode counts of Prior to planting use 1 gallon of Promax per acre then follow with water to encourage saturation Speaking with ranch manager counts were 90% reduced and will be using Promax
