General information Name of the culture:pineapple Scientific name:ananas Comosus Varieties in the market:currently more than 1,400 varieties are known, the most common in El Salvador are pineapple of Castilla, pineapple Golde (MD2), Azucaron, but in international markets there are others such as Cayenne Lisa (SmoothCayenne), Spanish Red (network English), Montúfar, among others. Commercial situation:the product can be exported to United States, free of tariff. HS: Description of the culture:this fruit is native to South America, originally called pineapple (in ) Guarani). The pineapple plant is a monocot, herbaceous and perennial. The stem is covered of lanceolate leaves which surround and are arranged in a spiral, the edges of these can be supplied with thorns. 2. International trade Trade in pineapple is represented mainly by imports. The volume of the pineapple imports increased in 2006 by 29% for 2008 had a significant reduction of 16%; This last reduction coincides with the economic crisis world, and this fruit to be higher (compared to others), price tends to have a higher elasticidadingreso than the products of the basic shopping basket, for the years have grown imports, maintaining nearly constant. Standards and regulations for international markets For the marketing of the pineapple in the markets international must meet the requirements of the regulations of the Codex Alimentarius, which include the provisions relating to quality, sizes, presentation, among other conditions for the entry of this product. The second largest importer is Belgium with 12%, followed by the Netherlands and Germany with 9% and 7% respectively. The next group is composed of Italy and Japan with 6% of the total volume imported. The variety most commercial and in demand in the United States and Europe is currently the MD2, developed in Hawaii for many years of research and funded by the main international distributors of fresh fruit (Maui, Dole and del Monte). 4
5 Is important to mention that the volume of imports from El Salvador pineapple located it at position number 20 globally as importers of pineapple. On the other hand, the value imported pineapple juice or concentrate, is equivalent to $460 million. Again, United States is the main importer with the 41.08% of the total, followed by the Netherlands with 16.7%, Spain with the 5.8%, and Italy and Russia with 4% respectively.
