NOTE: The Native Spring Flowering Packet contains two (2) of each of the three species listed in the brochure. There are a total of six (6) seedlings per packet. The Nut Tree Packet contains two (2) of each of the five species listed in the brochure. There are a total of ten (10) seedlings per packet. The Honey Bee Pollinator Tree Packet contains five (5) of each of the four species listed in the brochure. There are a total of twenty (20) seedlings per packet. SEEDLING SIZE: Tree and shrub seedlings should be between 6 and 18 inches tall, depending on the species. Seedlings should be planted within 5 days after pick-up and then watered regularly. 2 Deciduous Trees American Chestnut (Castanea dentata) Help restore this majestic tree to its native range! A broadleaf species, leaves are 6-8 inches long. In autumn, large spiny burs produce 1-5 nuts. Minimum seed-bearing age is 4 years. Commonly found on hill slopes in gravelly or rocky, well-drained soils. Rapid growing trees that can reach ft. at maturity. Trees typically grow very straight with few low branches making it an excellent timber species. These seedlings American Chestnut are secured from the West Virginia State Nursery and are considered pure American Chestnut. This cultivar has shown a resistance to chestnut blight but it is too soon to claim resistance. Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) Commercially important tree growing to 60+ ft. at maturity; commonly used for lumber, veneer, and furniture. Leaves are dark green in summer and yellowish in fall. The small black fruit provides food for a variety of birds and mammals. Tolerates a wide variety of growing conditions. Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) This large nut tree, reaching up to 75 ft. at maturity, is valued for timber, veneer, and furniture. It has dark green compound leaves and produces delicious nuts that are preferred by wildlife. Grows well in most locations, but prefers fertile, deep soils. Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra) Tall, relatively fast growing tree that can reach 80+ ft. at maturity. Leaves are shiny green in summer and bright red in fall. Makes an excellent tree for street or yard. Prefers full sun and acidic soil. It has a commercial value for furniture and lumber. Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) This large shade tree, which can reach heights over 100 ft., is the cornerstone of the maple syrup industry. The medium green leaves can turn brilliant yellow, orange, or red in the fall. Prefers partial to full sun and well-drained soil. Excellent shade tree. White Oak (Quercus alba) A large, boadleaf tree growing to 100+ ft. at maturity. This species is shade tolerant, found on a variety of sites, and grows best in deep, sandy loam soil on south and west facing slopes. A great species for wildlife. Coniferous Trees Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) Large, slow-growing, long-lived, deciduous conifer. Frequently reaches ft. in height and 3-6 ft. in diameter. The leaves are alternate, linear and flat with blades generally 2 (Continued on page 3) Care on Arrival Tree seedlings require water and cool temperatures to survive until planted. If you intend to plant the trees within a week (recommended), keep them in the shipping package in a cool or shaded location, such as a cooler (above freezing), basement, outbuilding, or on the north side of a building. If planting will be delayed longer than a week, open the package, make sure the roots and packing materials are damp, reseal, and store the package in a cool place, periodically checking the condition of the trees roots. Or, dig a trench deep enough to accommodate the roots and plant the seedlings, packing soil around their roots. (See illustration below.) Do not allow the roots to dry out. Roots should be kept MOIST, not WET. Do not store seedling roots submerged in water. Don t Guess...Soil Test! Plants need proper nutrients to reach their full genetic potential. Soil sampling allows us to determine if plant needs can be met or if we need to make amendments to our soil so plants can grow their best. It s inexpensive and it s easy! Sample in spring or fall when grass is no longer actively growing. Soil properties vary from place to place. The sample should be representative of the area to be sampled as a whole. Do not take samples from an unrelated area. Remove plant debris or turf from soil surface at sample site. Sample lawns, gardens, and fields to a depth of 6-8. Using a clean plastic bucket and a soil probe or spade, combine cores or slices of soil from at least ten locations per acre scattered throughout the area to be tested. 1. Dig v-shaped trench in moist shady place. 2. Break bundles and spread out Break up clumps, mix soil thoroughly, and air dry at room temperature. Place one pint of sampled soil in bag. Take sample to a testing location. Some local options are: Athens County Extension Office, Buckley Brothers or Shade River Ag. Cost is approximately $15 per sample Fill in loose soil and water well. 4. Complete filling in soil and pack with feet.

3 Canadian Hemlock Groundcover English Ivy (Hedera helix Thorndale ) Evergreen groundcover with dark green leaves. Multiple garden uses ranging from a low growing groundcover to a high climbing vine. Grows well in sun or shade and is drought tolerant. Height is 6-8 inches at maturity. Plant 8-12 inches apart. 100 plants. Pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis) This groundcover has deep green glossy foliage and a compact habit. Grows well in sun or shade. Height is 6-9 inches at maturity. Plant 6-12 inches apart. 100 plants. Wildlife Boxes Bat House Bats play an essential role in keeping populations of night-flying insects in balance; one bat can catch hundreds of insects per hour! They are the primary predators of beetles, moths, leafhoppers, mosquitoes, and other insects. Installing this cedar bat house on your property will provide roosting locations for these nocturnal mammals. Eastern Bluebird Box Landlords wanted! Attract bluebirds to your property! Bluebirds readily accept nesting boxes to raise their young. Ideal bluebird habitat is a mix of scattered trees and open grasslands including short, mowed, or grazed grass. These cedar nest boxes should be placed at least 300 ft. apart. Contact the District for more information on bluebirds. Prefers very wet soils consisting of muck, clay or fine sand where moisture is abundant and fairly permanent. Excellent for erosion control, timber, wildlife, and site rehabilitation. Consider their large size when planting near houses or power lines. Canadian Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) An attractive, graceful evergreen tree that has a narrow pyramidal shape when young and then becomes broader with age. The short, dark green needles have two white bands on the underside. Makes a beautiful specimen and can also be pruned for formal or informal hedges. Grows ft. at maturity. Grows best in cool, moist locations. Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens var. glauca) This large evergreen with a moderate growth rate can reach heights of 100+ ft. It has short, stout, prickly, bluish green to bright, silvery blue needles. Prefers fertile, moist soil in full sun, but will tolerate dry, well-drained areas as well. Valued as ornamentals, windbreaks, and Christmas trees. Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) An outstanding timber pine due to its large size (80+ ft. at maturity) and fast growing ability. It has long, soft, light green needles and grows well in many soil types. Often used for windbreaks, wildlife habitat, lumber, and Christmas trees. Prefers full sun, but can tolerate some shade. Not salt tolerant. Norway Spruce (Picea abies) One of the fastest growing spruces! Reaches 100 ft. at maturity. This extremely attractive evergreen has strong, distinctive, sweeping branches, and shiny green ½-1 inch long, flat needles. Grows well on most sites and is used for ornamentals, windbreaks, and Christmas trees. Scotch Pine (Pinus sylvestris) Medium-size pine that can grow ft. at maturity. Bluish green, medium length needles enhance its Christmas tree appeal. Also used for ornamentals, windbreaks, and lumber. Prefers welldrained, dry soils of lower fertility and full sun. 4 Specialty Tree and Shrub Packets Native Spring Flowering Packet This packet consists of smaller shrubs/trees that will do well in smaller, more compact areas or on the edges of woodlands. These species are early blooming and excellent choices for attracting pollinators. (2 each of the following species - 6 seedlings total - No Substitutions) Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) A small, native, deciduous tree that grows ft. tall. Showy purplish-pink flowers appear in late April to early May. The heart-shaped leaves are dark green in summer and change to yellow in fall. The 2-3 inch long, dark brown seed pods may persist through the winter. Makes a worthwhile addition to any landscape. Early season bloom. Shadblow Serviceberry (Amelanchier canadensis) Native, deciduous, large shrub or small tree with grayish-green summer foliage and yellowish-orange to deep rusty red fall color. Small white flowers in late March turn into edible blueblack fruit that attracts birds. Grows to ft. tall. Prefers sun or shade. Early season bloom. White Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) An ornamental deciduous tree with brilliant white flowers that bloom in mid-spring. A small tree reaching a mature height and spread of 25 ft., the dogwood is a valuable food plant for wildlife because high calcium and fat contents make it palatable. Flowering dogwood provides both food and shelter for many wildlife species. This very hardy plant adapts well to any soil type and grows in sun or partial shade. Mid season bloom. Nut Tree Packet (2 each of the following species - 10 seedlings total - No Substitutions) Chestnut Oak (Quercus prinus) This slow growing, medium species can attain a height of 65 to 80 ft. at maturity. The acorns of chestnut oak, along with those of the other oaks, are an important food for many wildlife species including deer, turkeys, squirrels, chipmunks, and mice. They are commonly found in the Appalachian region on dry, infertile soils and rocky ridges but reaches best growth on rich well-drained soils along streams. Full or partial sun. Chinkapin Oak (Quercus muehlenbergii) This medium-sized oak can reach a mature height of ft. and is used for shade and timber and valued for its acorn production. It is a great species for both wildlife and forest products. It tolerates poor, dry sites and does best in limestone soils. Full or partial sun. American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) A medium size shrub with rounded heart shaped leaves. Edible brown nuts provide food for game birds, deer, and small mammals. Grows to 7-10 ft. tall. Requires sun and moist soils. 5 Common Pawpaw Fruits, Berries, and Mushrooms Yellow Delicious Apples (2 trees) DWARF VARIETY! Mature height is 8-10 ft. and needs 10x10 ft. spacing. A large golden apple that ripens late with a fine, sweet flavor. Trees are very vigorous and bear quite young. Home use for eating, pies, sauces, and preserves. Fruit trees need a minimum of 6-8 hours of sunlight daily and plenty of water. They are not drought tolerant. (Pollinate with Red Delicious, Red Jonathan, Early Harvest, etc.) Common Pawpaw (5 trees) (Asimina triloba) Ohio s official Native Fruit Tree, this small tree can form small colonies under natural conditions. Grows to both a height and spread of ft. Leaves turn from dark green in summer to yellow in fall. Flavor and fleshy consistency of the large, sweet-flavored, edible fruits resembles bananas and is consumed by a variety of animals. Easily grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade but prefers moist, fertile soil and full sun. Shiitake Mushroom (1 kit) Delicious mushrooms that have brown, slightly convex caps that range from about 2-4 inches in diameter. Kit contains 200 inoculated shiitake dowel plugs, 1/4lb. bees wax, wax dauber, 5 metal tags for labeling and an easy to follow growers guide. Each kit will plug approximately 10 logs 3 inches in diameter and 40 inches long. Logs not included. It produces nuts with an excellent flavor enjoyed by both humans and wildlife. Squirrels, raccoons, fox, rabbits, some bird species, wild turkey, chipmunks, and mice are consumers of hickory nuts. It is shade intolerant, found on bottomlands to upland sites. White Walnut, Butternut (Juglans cinerea) Mature tree height can be ft. It forms a wide spreading crown with stiff upright branches producing large, alternate, pinnately compound leaves with numerous leaflets. Oblong, yellowgreen, sticky husks contain an irregularly-ribbed nut containing sweet, oily meat. Prefers full sun and moist, fertile soil. Slow growing tree. Honey Bee Pollinator Tree Packet As requested by local bee keepers, this packet consists of tree species that bloom early, mid and late season. All species are excellent for pollinators. (5 each of the following species - 20 seedlings total - No Substitutions) Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) The fragrant, whitish flowers, borne in showy racemes, appear after leaf emergence in May or June. The flowers originate in the axils of current year leaves and are pollinated by insects, primarily bees. Black locust is a medium sized tree, generally 40 to 60 ft. in height. The species does best on moist, rich, loamy soils or those of limestone origin. Mid season bloom. Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) This fast growing specimen has large, bright green heart-shaped leaves with showy white flowers that bloom in late spring. This tree will reach ft. tall with a ft. spread at maturity. The Northern Catalpa grows well in almost any soil condition as well as in full or partial sun. Early season bloom. Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) This medium to fast growing aromatic tree reaches ft. tall with a ft. spread at maturity. Greenish-yellow flowers appear in March and April. Fall foliage is brilliant. The Sassafras grows in acidic, loamy, moist, well drained, wet soils and is somewhat drought tolerant. Grows well in full or partial sun. Early season bloom. Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) This small, native tree has a mature height of ft. Small, creamy-white, urn-shaped, fragrant flowers are borne in 4-10 inches long panicles in June to early July. The rich, iridescent green leaves turn vibrant yellow, purple, and red in fall. The sourwood grows in acidic, loamy, moist, sandy, well-drained and clay soils. Prefers full sun and normal moisture but has some drought tolerance. Excellent native ornamental tree with four season attributes. Late season bloom.
