1 Biodiversity Assessment within the Nillumbik Indigenous Plants Park A list of findings by Chantelle Ebony Roberts and Georgia Lloyd, 2015 RESEARCH FOCUS Recording and repairing the flora and fauna within the Nillumbik Indigenous Plants Park, located between Karingal Drive and Nerreman Gateway, Eltham, near the historic Smith Dam. BACKGROUND The Friends of Karingal Yalloc (FOKY) organization was established in 2002, with the support of Nillumbik Shire Council and Melbourne Water. The name means "happy camping ground creek", and the group s focus is on land care and learning to recognise weeds and indigenous plants. In addition, the organization aims to help restore the native creeks to something approaching prior to European settlement. This involves the removal of exotic weeds, replacing them with indigenous plants, and maintaining the various sites. For further information, please visit the Friends website ( RESULTS The main objective for this project was to assist in the FOKY principal objective, which is the creation of the Nillumbik Indigenous Plants Park. This objective was fulfilled: participants mapped and identified the trees, shrubs and grasses in the park, in conjunction with assessing which plants were indigenous to the area. Trees: An inventory of the trees within the survey area (as shown in Figure 1 below) was undertaken. 6 Figure 3: Map of Grasses in Nillumbik Indigenous Plants Park CONCLUSIONS A great diversity of species was identified at the proposed Nillumbik Indigenous Plants Park site. A total of 20 tree species were found. These consisted of two main tree genera: Eucalyptus and Acacia. The main eucalypt species identified were Eucalyptus viminalis and Eucalyptus melliodora. The main acacia species were Acacia melanoxylon and Acacia dealbata. Other tree genera recorded included Melaleuca, Allocasuarina and Exocarpos. Twenty-two species of shrubs were also identified. The main shrub genera were Bursaria, Goodenia and Acacia. The most frequently found species was Bursaria spinosa, with 107 individuals. Other common shrub species included Goodenia ovata, Dodenaea vicrosa and Acacia verticillata. Twenty-four grass species were identified within the site. The main species found were Microlaena stipoides and Anthoxanthum odoratum. There were six weed species identified, five of which were grasses, including Allium triquetrum and Poa annua, and one of which was the tree species Hakea salicifolia. It is hoped that the data collected in this study will inform future management work, and assist in the development of an Indigenous Plants walk within the park.
