And we are therefore forward-thinking with a consumer-oriented focus, always working on new technologies and innovative varieties. We invariably try and add value to the supply chain for growers, processors, retailers and consumers by providing our precious seeds. Ongoing development Syngenta conducts extensive market research into expectations and preferences. We develop tomato varieties with strong agronomic properties in terms of resistance and flexibility. Obviously, we ensure extensive testing of all our varieties, among other things, at the testing stations in our important cultivation areas. Together with the grower Syngenta does not develop a variety or technology by itself, and we greatly value close collaboration with our growers. It is definitely our aim to allow our growers to benefit from our experience in growing tomatoes. So, this year too you can count on high-productivity tomatoes which are easy to grow, harvest, clean, process and package. 21 Rootstocks The choice of rootstock is crucial to have good crop performance. It has to be in line with the needs from the crop technics, in combination with the greenhouse technic.

24 21 Rootstocks The choice of rootstock is crucial to have good crop performance. It has to be in line with the needs from the crop technics, in combination with the greenhouse technic. For this reason, Syngenta invest in the development of different rootstocks. This investment in research creates the optimal winning combination rootstock-hybrid. Rootstocks are mainly used to secure the plant stress management. In these cases the growers are searching for a consistent and efficient growth of the plant. In fact we can translate in secure the consistency of root growth, to keep the plant- head in consistent development. Growth in this case is finding the optimal balance between vegetation volume and plant power. With too high vegetation the plant becomes inefficient with the energy balance, creates too high plant body mass and develops lower fruit mass and less flavour. As in a lot of situations, the good balance is crucial. We look for a plant that is able to keep a consistency, and anticipate a part against the conditional environments. In this case the rootstock is the crucial part to anticipate, there are 3 different crucial factors to take into account for the right combination rootstock; 1) the greenhouse type, 2) the crop technic and seasonal plan, 3) and the scion character. The rootstock will support the energy factor, to balance the plant.
