It is in the form of "apparent consumption" (an estimate of total consumption using data on various components such as production, imports exports etc) and is for broad categories of foodstuffs such as "beef" "veal" and "pig meat" is the latest period for which apparent consumption data is available for all categories. Projected data is available for /98 for selected foodstuffs. The consumption data, produced by the ABS, is available upon request.

37 Page 37 NEW ZEALAND New Zealand does not have a specialist source of domestic consumption data for individual agricultural products. The Meat and Wool Economic Service of New Zealand provides meat consumption data (bone-in weights) for beef, veal, mutton, lamb, pigmeats and poultry. This data is calculated using reported production data and trade data (total reported production less exports plus imports) which does not take into account rural slaughterhouse, on-farm and pet food kill which may underestimate the true domestic consumption level. MAF provides consumption data for the OECD on the above meat products, as well as butter, cheese, skimmilk powder, wholemilk powder, casein, wheat and coarse grains. This data is calculated as a residual from production and export/import data. MAF also provides estimates for apple and kiwifruit consumption. It may be possible to obtain estimates for other agricultural products using production and trade data as indicated above if the appropriate statistics are available. The most recent three-year period for which the data is available from the Meat and Wool Economic Service of New Zealand is - while MAF has data up for the September 2000 year.
