2 Danube Soya is a brand and quality programme for soya beans, food products made from soya beans directly (e.g. Tofu, Soya Drinks) and animal products from animals fed with danube soya meal or toasted soya beans (e.g. Milk, Eggs, Meat) 2

3 Danube Soya Beans are from the Danube Region + GMO free Additionally, soya bean growers comply with: EU pesticide legislation EU (ILO) social & labour standards and don t use land for soya cultivation that was not in agricultural use before January

5 Inspection and Certification System for geographical origin and being GMO free Three levels of inspection: Self monitoring (= documentation on farm level) External inspections by registered inspection bodies Supervisory inspection by Danube Soya Association Frequency of external and supervisory inspections: based on risk (defined in different risk levels) 5

6 Risk Levels for Soya Growers Level 0: no GMOs planted & whole country part of the region; AUT, BIH, CRO, HUN, SRB, SUI; Level 1: no GMOs planted & split country; ITA, GER, POL; Level 2: planting of GMOs possible (e.g. maize), but no GM-soya planting allowed; BUL, CZE, ROU, SLO, SVK; Level 3: also planting of GM-soya possible or legally unclear situation; MDA & UKR 6

7 Requirements for Soya Growers (1) All soya growers need to sign an agreement for keeping the following conditions: 1. Only GMO free soya varieties used and no planting of GM soya for the last 3 years 2. No use of any other GM seeds (e.g. maize) this year and the year before 3. Documentation of amounts of soya seeds planted and soya beans harvested 7

8 Requirements for Soya Growers (2) 4. Compliance with EU pesticide legislation 5. Compliance with EU (ILO) social & labour standards 6. No use of land for soya cultivation that was not in agricultural use before January Acceptance of risk-based inspections within the scope of supervisory inspections by Danube Soya Association 8. Sign agreement, leave it at the agricultural collector when delivering the harvest and keep a copy 8

9 Additional Requirements (growers/l3) for growers in Moldova & Ukraine (L 3): Growing contracts obligatory (with agricultural collectors) 100% external inspections by registered inspection bodies before harvesting External inspections repeated every year Use of original GM free seeds, documentation of invoices (for seeds)

11 Requirements for Agricultural Collectors (1) 1. Documentation of all Danube Soya grower Agreements 2. Plausibility check of information given by soya bean growers 3. Documentation of all soya bean suppliers, amount of delivered soya beans + indication of product specification (e.g. Danube Soya); same documentation for all outgoing deliveries/batches; 11

12 Requirements for Agricultural Collectors (2) 4. Ag. collectors need to take a retained sample of each incoming and outgoing soya bean batch and store them for 1 year 5. External inspections: First inspection: All ag. collectors need a first inspection by a registered inspection body to confirm compliance with the Danube Soya guidelines Further inspections: Ag. collectors situated in L 2 or L 3 countries and/or storing crops from these countries need further inspections each year (L 3) or every second year (L 2) 6. Lot-Based Certification System 12

13 Additional Requirements (collectors L2/L3) for agricultural collectors situated in level 2 or 3 countries or storing soya beans from these countries: 1. Install quality management system for segregation of GM and non-gm crops 2. Monitoring for possible GM contaminations: A GM rapid test of each storage unit or one test per 100 t at the end of the storage process: positive result 2 more tests 2 out of 3 positive PCR analysis Positive PCR test inform inspection body and clarify origin/reason of GMO contamination 3. Establish spatial separation of GM and non-gm crops in all areas if possible 13

15 Lot-Based Certification System Starting at the level of ag. collectors, Danube Soya beans can be traded only with lot-based certificates Each year (after the new soya bean harvest until end of November) the ag. collector reports the freshly stored amounts of Danube Soya beans to its inspection body In exchange, the inspection body issues lot-based Danube Soya Certificates for trading the beans, including the following information: Code for inspection body Consecutively numbered code for (outgoing) delivery Amount of Danube Soya beans (in tons) Year of yield 15

16 Primary Processors Are those undertakings processing and/or treating soya beans chemically or physically most substantially: Oil mills Toasters Food Producers At this point, the contract system with Danube Soya Association comes into play At this point, quantities are reported to the Association, and the licence fee is charged 16

20 General Quality Assurance of Fodder Oil mills, compound feed plants and toasters need : QS, AMA Pastus+ or GMP+ certification Collaboration & use of synergies with other standard holders such as the Austrian ARGE Gentechnik-frei, the German Verband Lebensmittel ohne Gentechnik (VLOG e.v.), etc. 20

21 Requirements for Soya Processors through Marketers Agricultural processors (e.g. farms on which laying hens or fattening pigs are kept) Food producers & marketers (e.g. egg packing stations, slaughterhouses) Product name or description included on all delivery notes & invoices Documentation of the flow of produce External inspections (combined inspections) Supervisory inspections by the Association 21

22 Example: Egg-Producing Poultry Farms (Requirements) Non-GM fodder (e.g. in acc. with the Austrian Food Codex) is used as before. The produce is additionally classified as: Danube Soya, or enthält Donau Soja (contains Danube Soya), or geeignet zur Herstellung Gentechnik-freier Lebensmittel mit Donau Soja Auslobung / suitable for the production of GMfree food labelled as Danube Soya The product description included on all delivery notes & invoices for packing stations is fed with Danube Soya. 22

23 Example: Egg-Producing Poultry Farms (Inspections) Inspections should be conducted in the form of combined audits, i.e. together with non-gm inspections (in acc. with the Austrian Food Codex) In addition to non-gm inspections: plausibility check with respect to the Danube Soya quantities purchased and the eggs produced/sold (documentation!) 23

24 Example: Danube Soya Certified Egg Packing Stations (Requirements) Licensing agreement for trademark use (free of charge) Membership in Danube Soya Internal Documentation: Association. The undertaking s flow of produce shall be documented such that it is possible to calculate the plausibility of whether the quantity of incoming products labelled as fed with Danube Soya corresponds to the quantity of outgoing products labelled with the combined word/figurative trademark fed with Danube Soya. 24
