1 February 12, 2009 TO: FROM: RE: Soybean Producers Gary Pierzynski Interim Head, Agronomy Department 2009 Conventional and Special Purpose Soybean Varieties Kansas State University has developed several conventional/special purpose soybean varieties that are available to growers for planting in the spring of The purpose of this document is to provide general information about the agronomic performance of the varieties, and determine your interest in obtaining seed for increase or evaluation. Parent seed of these varieties for the purpose of promoting, selling, marketing and distributing will be made available to growers through a non-exclusive license agreement. Branding of the variety in accordance with State or Federal regulations would be permitted under these nonexclusive licensing agreements. Licensees will be required to pay KSU a seed stock maintenance fee. Certifying seed for sale will not be an option, but sale of quality assurance inspected seed is optional. If you are interested in the commercial production of any of these varieties please complete and return the enclosed Parent Seed Request Form. Seed for testing of these varieties may be obtained by submitting the seed request for testing and evaluation. Descriptions and performance data on the varieties available for release or testing are presented in the following pages and in Tables 1 through 4. If you have questions about these varieties, please contact: Bill Schapaugh Department of Agronomy 2004 Throckmorton Plant Sciences Center Kansas State University Manhattan, KS Telephone: Fax: wts@ksu.edu 2009 Kansas State University, Conventional/Special Purpose Varieties Page 1 of 9

3 Lines Available for Testing: K High Yield, High Protein Variety K is a sister line of KS4607. Compared to KS4607, K is a couple of days later in maturity, has smaller seeds, and slightly lower seed protein content. It is an F4 single plant selection from the cross K1433 x HS K has purple flowers, tawny pubescence, tan pods, indeterminate growth habit, and seeds with black hila. K is a mid group IV maturity variety with excellent yield potential and above-average protein content. K Large Seeded, Yellow Hila K is an F4 single plant selection from the cross A x KS4702sp. K has white flowers, gray pubescence, tan pods at maturity, determinate growth habit, and seeds with yellow hila. Compared to KS4702sp, K is later in maturity, has been lodging resistance, has larger seed, and higher seed protein. K is a mid group IV maturity variety with above-average seed size. K Large Seeded, Yellow Hila, High Protein Variety K is an F4 single plant selection from the cross A x KS4702sp. K has white flowers, gray pubescence, tan pods at maturity, determinate growth habit, and seeds with yellow hila. 9 Methods Tests were typically planted in four-row plots with three or 4 replications per location. The center two rows were used for all data collection. Yield is measured in bushels (60 lbs) per acre, adjusted to 13% moisture. Maturity is the date when 95% of the pods have ripened. Delayed leaf drop and green stems are not considered in assigning maturity. Maturity is expressed as days earlier (-) or days later (+) than a check. Lodging is rated at maturity according to the following scores: 1 Most plants erect. 2 All plants leaning slightly or a few plants down. 3 All plants leaning moderately, or 25 to 50% down. 4 All plants leaning considerably, or 50 to 80% down. 5 Most plants down. Height is average length from the ground to the tip of the main stem at maturity, measured in inches. Seed Size is measured in weight in grams per 100 seeds. Seed Composition, protein, oil, moisture, and fiber content of the sample were determined by near-infrared spectroscopy. All seed composition measurements are adjusted to a 13% moisture basis. Fatty Acid Analysis was conducted on two 5-seed samples from each plot for entries that were developed for specific fatty acid profiles at Iowa State University. Seed Quality was rated according to the following scores considering the amount and degree of wrinkling, defective seed coat (growth cracks), greenishness, and moldy or other pigment. Ratings are: 1 Very good 2 Good 3 Fair 4 Poor 5 Very poor 2009 Kansas State University, Conventional/Special Purpose Varieties Page 9 of 9
