1 The National Society for Phenylketonuria Dietary Information for the Treatment of PHENYLKETONURIA BABY Food Exchanges April 2013 FOR THE SOLE USE OF DIETITIANS, THEIR PATIENTS AND NSPKU Published by the National Society for Phenylketonuria (United Kingdom) (A company limited by guarantee and registered as a charity) Contact Address: NSPKU, P.O. Box 3143, Purley CR8 9DD Internet: Company No.: Charity No.: BABY FOOD 50mg Phenylalanine Exchanges (1g Protein) March 2013 EXCHANGES OF MANUFACTURED FOODS

2 The quantity of food given contains 1g protein. This list is for the use of dietitians and parents and should be used for reference, to extract items for the individual patients if and when the foods become suitable for use. Items should be weighed and measured as purchased unless otherwise stated. Weights are based on data received from manufacturers during March 2013 and are given to the nearest 5g. The actual phenylalanine content of the portions will vary according to the method of calculation, accuracy of the original protein or phenylalanine analysis and weight of actual portion. It should be remembered that the smaller the weight of the portion, the greater the percentage error (e.g. dry baby foods are less accurate than tins or jars). By law no baby food is permitted to contain artificial sweetener. PLEASE NOTE: There will be some foods within the exchange list which contain only freely allowed foods (e.g fruits and vegetables) but their protein content is above 0.5g per 100g. I have kept to the cut-off protein levels for the sake of the lists but dietitians may need to explain and advise about this anomaly to patients. Suggestions for improvements to the list are welcomed. Paula Hallam B. Sc. 18 PLEASE NOTE: If there is a Baby Food that is not listed, use the protein calculator below to work out the exchange value. How to calculate a 1g protein exchange from the food label: Eg. Tinned Sweetcorn: Per 100g drained Energy 80kcals Protein 2.6g Carbohydrate 13.6g Fat 1.1g Look at the protein per 100g Divide this protein figure into 100 and this will give you the amount of the food for a 1g protein exchange = 38.5 Round up or down to the nearest 5g = 40 So 40g of this food (tinned sweetcorn) = 1 exchange

19 The following contain 0.5g protein or less per 100g. They do not have to be counted as exchanges.
