1 WFP MONTHLY MARKET UPDATE SUDAN, MAY 218 Highlights The national average retail price of sorghum significantly increased by 9.7 percent, in WFP areas, compared to the previous month. The retail prices of sorghum increased or remained steady in all states compared to the previous month, except West Darfur decreased by 11 percent. The national average price of goat slightly increased by 3.2 percent compared to the previous month; the highest increase was observed in Kassala and South Darfur increased by 11 and 1 percent, respectively. The national average retail price of groundnut remained steady compared to the previous month. The wholesale prices of sorghum and millet, in ElGadarif Auction Market, were significantly increased by 1 to 7 percent, respectively, in comparison to the previous month, while it still higher by 19 and 1 percent, respectively, compared to the same period of the previous year. Recent Crop Prices in Production Area - ElGadarif Auction Market The average wholesale price of sorghum for May 218 was SDG77/9Kg sack, higher by 1. percent compared to April 218 and 261 percent compared to the same month of the previous year; see chart 1 - annex 1 in page 8. The average wholesale price of millet for May 218 was SDG1445/1Kg sack, higher by 7. percent compared to April 218 and 19 percent higher compared to the same period of the previous year; see chart 2 - annex 1 in page 8. The average wholesale price of sesame for May 218 was SDG165/Kantar, less by 1. percent compared to April 218 and 1 percent higher compared to the same period of the previous year; see chart 3 - annex 1 in page 8.

2 SDG/Head SDG/KG MAY 218 Summary of Market Prices in WFP Areas The national average price of sorghum significantly increased by 9.7% compared to April 218. This attributed to diminishing supply from the last season harvest (217/18) and worry from the failure of coming season due to shortage of fuel supply. The current national retail price of sorghum increased by 146 percent compared to the same period of the previous year (May 217). This attributed to the high cost of production in addition to wheat subsidy lifting and devaluation of Sudanese currency. The national average price of sorghum was 261 percent higher than the fiveyear average Sorghum Prices - National Average 5 Year Average ( ) The national average price of goat slightly increased by 3.2 percent compared to the previous month (April 218), this attributed to the onset of the new production season. The current national average price of goat increased by 96. percent compared to the same month of the previous year. The national average price of goat higher by 176 percent compared to the five-year average of the same month (May). The high variation in national average price of goat is mainly attributed to the inflationary increase in the cost of production and devaluation of currency, which encouraged more export to the international market Goat Prices - National Average 5 Year Average ( )

3 SDG/Kantar (45KG) MAY 218 The national average price of groundnut slightly increased by.3 percent compared to the previous month (April). The stability in the groundnut prices is mainly attributed to the new government policy that requested the exporters to return all hard currency revenues from exports into the National Bank and get equivalent in Sudanese currency using official incentive exchange rate. Groundnut prices expected to remain stable or slightly increase during June 218. The success or failure of the current summer season will determine whether it will remain stable, increase or decrease Groundnut Prices - National Average 5 Year Average ( ) The national average price of groundnut higher by 58.3 percent compared to the same period of the previous year (May 217), this is due to the high cost of production and demand for local and international market. The national average price of groundnut higher by 155. percent compared to the five-year average of the same month. Additional price data of the three commodities for 216, 217 and 218 by the state found in annex 2 (page 9). 3

4 SDG / KG MAY 218 Sorghum Sorghum retail price significantly increased in eight out of 12 states during May 218 compared to the previous month. It sharply increased in North Darfur (29 percent), South Darfur (26 percent), Red Sea (17 percent), Blue Nile (15 percent), White Nile (1 percent), North Kordofan (9 percent) South Kordofan (8 percent) and West Kordofan (7 percent). It slightly increased in Kassala (2 percent) and East Darfur (1 percent). Sorghum retail price is sharply decreased in West Darfur (11 percent) and slightly in Central Darfur (1 percent). This significant increase in the sorghum prices during May 218 can be attributed to the risk that face the new summer season, as the result of shortage in supply of fuel. In addition to the depletion of stocks and approaching to the mid of the lean season. The sorghum prices significantly increased in all states compared to the same period of the previous year (May 217). It sharply increased in White Nile (224 percent), Blue Nile (223 percent), Kassala (215 percent), Red Sea (21 percent), North Kordofan (197 percent), North Darfur (187 percent), South Darfur (143 percent), East Darfur (122 percent), Central Darfur (115 percent), South Kordofan (91 percent), West Darfur (86 percent) and West Kordofan (36 percent). The sorghum prices were higher by 67 to 256 percent in all states compared to the 5-year average of the same month (May). Sorghum Prices, by State May 217 April 218 May 218 4

5 SDG /Head MAY 218 Goat The prices of goat increased in 1 out of 12 states compared to the previous month (April 218). It significantly increased in Kassala (11.1 percent), South Darfur (1.1 percent), Blue Nile (8. percent), North Kordofan (7.5 percent), Red Sea (7.4 percent), West Kordofan (7.1 percent) while it slightly increased in North Darfur (4.3 percent), White Nile (2.5 percent), East Darfur (2.5 percent) and Central Darfur (2.4 percent). Goat retail prices sharply decreased in West Darfur (18.6 percent) and South Kordofan (6.7 percent). The increase in goat prices in most states is mainly attributed to the sharp increase in the prices of supplementary feedings and veterinary services. The prices of goat increased by 56 to 259 percent in all states compared to the same month of the previous year (May 217), while it was higher by 93 to 327 percent in all states compared to the 5-year average of the same month. The high goat prices compared to the previous years attributed to the inflationary increase in the cost of production and high demand for export market. 6 SDG /Kantar MAY 218 Groundnut The groundnut prices increased in 7 out of eleven states compared to the previous month (April 217). It significantly increased in East Darfur (6.3 percent), Blue Nile (6. percent), West Kordofan (5.9 percent), North Darfur (5.5 percent) and South Darfur (5. percent); while it slightly increased in Kassala (3.5 percent) and North Kordofan (1. percent). Groundnut retail prices sharply decreased in White Nile (16.1 percent) and North Darfur (9.8 percent). It remained unchanged in Central Darfur and South Kordofan. The prices of groundnut expected to remain steady during June until the gloomy picture of the coming summer season created by the shortage of fuel becomes clear. The groundnut prices higher by 39 to 187 percent in all states compared to the same month of the previous year (May 217), except West Kordofan where decreased by 9 percent. The groundnut prices remained extremely higher by 62 to 218 percent in all states, compared to the five-year average of May. The high variability in the groundnut prices during May 218 compared to the previous years, is mainly attributed to high demand from internal and international markets and inflationary increases in the costs of production. 1 9 Groundnut Prices, by State May 217 April 218 May 218 6
