1 Alamance County 4-H Fall Plant Sale Help Support Alamance County 4-H Plants for Sale: Apple Trees Pecan Trees Peach Trees Fig Trees Muscadine Vines Blackberry Plants Alamance County 4-H Phone: Fax: Alamance County 4-H would like to ask for your support as we raise funds for our scholarship fund and programming efforts. This year we are selling apple trees, pecan trees, peach trees, fig trees, muscadine vines, and blackberry plants. Not only will you be supporting a great organization, but you ll be growing your own food! Order Deadline: October 27, 2011 (order & payment due) Mail to: Alamance County 4-H Pick Up Dates: November 3-4, 2011, 8 am 5 pm Pick Up Location: Alamance County Cooperative Extension Office 4-H is a youth development organization for boys and girls ages 5-19 where participants and families learn by doing. They participate in hands-on learning experiences, meanwhile developing important life skills such as leadership, caring for others, giving back to their community and much more. NC 4-H has been around for over 100 years and is present in all 100 counties in the state. Proceeds benefit 4-Hers directly and indirectly. 4-Hers can earn scholarship money by participating in county events, and this money can help pay for 4-H Camp, Summer Fun, teen events, and more. Our fundraisers help build up our scholarship fund so we can continue to award scholarships. 2 Page 2 Alamance County 4-H Fall Plant Sale Apple Trees (1 gallon containers, $18 each) *two varieties needed for pollination Aunt Rachel (Heirloom) This apple is a local variety originating in Chatham County, NC. The tree is disease resistant, a fast grower, and its limb structure is such that pruning is made much easier. The tree begins to fruit early, producing excellent apples of good size. The apples are red with darker stripes. The flesh is white, firm, mildly tart, and juicy. It is good for eating and cooking, and it ripens over a period of several weeks in late July and early August. Gala This grocery store apple is even better when homegrown. It is a light red-colored apple that is sweet and firm. The tree has good disease resistance and is precocious. The apples ripen in early to mid September and will store well for a few weeks. Virginia Beauty The original tree grew before 1820 in what is today Carroll County in southwestern Virginia. The name implies an attractive apple, but it is also an excellent eating and dessert apple. The tree is known for producing wide branching angles, a trait that aids in producing proper tree structure. Fruit is medium to large with a glossy red or purplish color. Its flesh is greenish-yellow, fine grained, tender, juicy, sweet, and mildly subacid. Ripens in October. Enterprise Large, round, deep red apple that is firm with a good sugar/acid balance. It is sometimes described as a new version of winesap. It ripens in September and early October and stores well. Very disease resistant. (Patented) Stayman Winesap This apple originated in Kansas in 1866 as a seedling of the original Winesap. It has been an important commercial apple for the past 100 years. It grows well in the south and is resistant to apple scab and cedar apple rust. The fruit is good for fresh eating, cooking, and making cider. The fruit is medium or larger and greenish with some red around most of the apple. The flesh is yellow, fine grained, firm, juicy, and sprightly subacid. Ripens in late September into October. Blacktwig (Mammoth Blacktwig) The muddy history of this apple places its origin in Virginia, Tennessee, or Arkansas during the 1800 s. This apple tends to be tart and of unparalleled fresh eating quality. It can also be used for cider or cooking, and is known to keep well. The tree is resistant to several apple diseases including fireblight and cedar apple rust. The tree tends to be productive, even on poor quality soils. The apple is above medium to large, skin green with a deep red and several red stripes. Its flesh is white, almost yellow, firm, juicy, and mildly subacid. Ripens late September through October.

3 Page 3 Pecan Trees (containerized, $35 each) *two varieties needed for pollination Pawnee Large nut with soft shell. Excellent quality, good yields, ripens early and bears nuts at a young age. Trees are disease resistant and are good for high density plantings. Elliot In early October, the pecans mature and the teardrop shaped nuts will easily shell out to reveal plump, light golden kernels. Yielding around 77 nuts per pound and 51% kernel, Elliot is a moderate producer of excellent quality pecans. Cross-pollinate with a Type I variety such as the Caddo or Pawnee. Peach Trees (5 gallon containers, $18 each) Elberta Fruit are large in size, yellow with a red blush, yellow flesh, very juicy, good flavor, freestone, and ripens late. Trees grow vigorous and compact and are self-fertile. Elberta is by far the most well known peach in the US. It is great for home and commercial use. Chilling requirement is hours. Red Haven Fruit are medium in size, bright red skin, yellow flesh, good flavor, freestone, and ripens early. Trees are vigorous growing, self-fertile, and very prolific. Chilling requirement is hours. Fig Trees (1 gallon containers, $8 each) Celeste Fruit are small to medium size, light brown to violet-brown skin, whitish pink color flesh, a closed eye, and very few seeds. Plants produce in early summer, cold hardy through climate zone 6, and are self pollinating. Recommended for fresh eating, preserves, drying, and canning. Brown Turkey Fruit are medium to large in size, copper color skin, amber to pink color flesh, very good flavor, a closed eye, and very few seeds. Plants are very prolific, many times producing fruit twice a year. Brown Turkey is usually cold hardy as far north as climate zone 5 and they are self pollinating. Recommended for fresh eating, drying, canning, and preserves.

4 Page 4 Alamance County 4-H Fall Plant Sale Muscadine Vines (1 gallon containers, $8 each) Carlos Bronze; fruit are small to medium in size, ripen early to mid season, produce in clusters, ripens very evenly, is a very heavy producer, and has a dry stem scar. Carlos plants are very vigorous and cold hardy. Sugar content is 15-16%. Uses: wine, commercial, home, juice and jelly. Doreen Bronze; fruit are medium in size, ripen late, clusters, and has good flavor. Plants are disease resistant and the growth habit is very vigorous. Sugar content is 17-18%. Uses: wine, home, juice and jelly. Magnolia Bronze; fruit are medium to large in size, cluster, good flavor, and excellent yields. Plants are very vigorous, cold hardy, and disease resistant. Sugar content is 16-17%. Uses: wine, home, commercial, juice and jelly. Nesbitt Black; fruit are very large in size, cluster, high yields, ripen mid to late season, and a dry stem scar. Plants are very vigorous, disease resistant, and cold hardy. Sugar content is %. Uses: fresh market, pick your own, and home. Noble Black; fruit are small in size, very large clusters, very high yields, ripen mid season with a wet stem scar. Plants are moderately vigorous with good disease resistance; however it is susceptible to powdery mildew. Noble is easily juiced making it a great choice for wine or juice. Sugar content is 15-16%. Uses: wine, juice and jelly. Thornless Blackberry Plants (1 gallon containers, $8 each) Arapaho Fruit are medium in size, good flavor, and an average sugar content of 9-10%. Fruit ripen early over about a four week period with good yields. Navaho Fruit are medium in size, excellent flavor, and an average sugar content of 11-12%. Fruit ripen mid season over a five to six week period with good yields. Fruit are also very firm, making storage and handling potential exceptional.
