16 V HORTICULTURE 5.0 Jammu & Kashmir is basically an agrarian economy. The favourable agro climatic conditions, fertile soil, sub tropical climate are ideally suited for cultivation of fruit and vegetables in the State and offer immense scope for development of horticulture. In view of the potential available, fruit growing has become a major industry and contributes largely to the export trade of the state. It absorbs a large chunk of people in the various processes through which it passes. Horticulture has a substantial share in the State Domestic Product. Looking to the importance of horticulture crops, the state government is placing considerable emphasis on the development of horticulture crops i.e. fruit, vegetables, spices, plantation crops, floriculture etc. 5.1 The major fruit grown in the State are apple, mango, walnut, almond, pear, cherry, apricot, peach, plum etc. Kashmiri apple is famous both in taste and appearance. It has gained fame in the export market and fetches a very good return. The major vegetables grown in the state are onion, potato, tomato, turnip, mutter, radish, carrot, green vegetables etc. and spices like chilies, garlic, turmeric etc. 5.2 A set of 10 tables in this chapter provide latest statstical information on the area under major horitculture crops and their production. Availability and distribution of fruit plants, import of fruit and vegetables along with export of fresh and dry fruit is also given. District wise information on kind wise area under major horticulture crops and production of fruit for the yera is presented as per exsting districts in tables no.5.00 and 5.01 respectivelly. 5.3 As per Horticulture Department an area of 3.55 lakh hectares was reported under major horticulture crops for the year with percent area under fresh fruits. Production of fruit during was lakh metric tonnes comprising of lakh Metric Tonnes of fresh fruit and 2.33 lakh metric tonnes of dry fruit. Export of fruit outside State for the year as per Directorate of Horticulture (P&M) was lakh metric tonnes and import of fruit & vegetable during the same yearwas recorded to be 5.09 lakh metric tonnes.
