James Lovelock What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and one another. Mahatma Gandhi The tranquil surface of the water pond got ruffled with the webbed feet of the migrating duck species. Broad beaked and a jumble of green and orange hues, these ducks quacked with a quiet, unusual sound in the roost surroundings of the jungle. A tiny fox lingered around with failed attempts to pounce upon them. It was early morning in the Pench forest reserve of Madhya Pradesh and we were on a safari to view these beauties of the woods. At the start of early morning one has to do just with a hot cup of tea at the entrance of the gate and after that one gets the dry snacks and has not to throw the trash in the jungle for which they even provide a paper bag to collect all the waste or else there is a penalty to pay. However, in between the safari, there is a break where we could get down as they provide us with some fresh snacks like sandwich and puri-bhaji along with fruits like bananas and a hot drink and still, if you desire to have something else, you can order for a special breakfast with the additional charges. Breakfast has an interesting part where the tourists are caged to protect from the monkeys as they snatch the food items as there is no fear of humans because the people feed them the leftovers making them more aggressive. This is definitely not good for the humans as well for the wildlife. The safari, however, is the cherry on the cake. If you are not into the safari you have missed everything in Pench. However, a long safari of about three hours does not promise to spot a tiger, which are about 33. Thirty-three tigers in 758 sq km and spotting one is really a tough job. However, the techniques and experience of guides prove to be useful in many cases. Besides the major ones, there are infinite minor animals like deer, sambar, neelgai, barasinga and birds like peacocks, owls and eagles, which keep you entertained all the three hours. You have to protect yourself from the morning chill and noon heat in an open-air safari trip. Besides the safari, which is the main attraction, there is a long list of resorts from low to high budgets one could choose from. Resorts are extremely luxurious and the warm service promises you complete relaxation with amenities like body spa, swimming pool, bon fire at night, 14 Woman s Era August (First) 2014
