2 Welcome Special Dietary Needs We operate 365 days of the year! Thank you for choosing our hot meal service. We are very proud of both the quality and variety of our balanced, nutritious meals, which adhere to strict national catering guidance. Our menu repeats every four weeks and our Nutrition and Wellbeing team has created some simple coding to make it easier for you to choose meals to suit you. Step 1: Choose one main meal and one dessert choice each day. Step 2: Give your completed menu to your Community Team delivery driver or return it by post or if you prefer. Step 3: We can provide you with a copy of your completed menu upon request. We hope you enjoy browsing our menu. Contact us on: info@hertsindependentliving.org Menu codes Desserts that contain no more than 15g sugar per portion. Dishes that are free from gluten and suitable if you have coeliac disease or have an intolerance to gluten. Main meals that are low in saturated fat. These meals also contain no more than 15g of total fat and 1.5g of salt per portion. Main meals that contain at least 400 calories and desserts at least 300 calories per portion (these are the highest energy options we offer on our menu). Dishes suitable for people following a vegetarian diet. Diabetes All of our meals are suitable for people with diabetes. However, food choices are an important part of your diabetes management. You may wish to choose more meals that are marked with a, and our desserts that contain less than 15g of sugar per portion, or have a fruit pot, which counts as one of your five a day. Soft and Puréed Meals If a health professional has advised you to have a texture modified diet, such as puréed meals, please contact us for a full range of Puréed, Soft and Fork Mashable meals. Healthy weight loss If you are watching your weight, you can choose to avoid the meals that are marked with a. Healthy weight gain If you are underweight, losing weight, or have a small appetite, you can choose meals and desserts marked with a, as these are the highest energy options on the menu. Please call us to get more information on food allergies and intolerances as we can help you to choose appropriate meals. 7 More than just a meal About us Hertfordshire Independent Living Service (HILS) is a charitable, not for profit, social enterprise that operates from four sites across the county, 365 days a year. We deliver 500,000 meals, and our vehicles travel the equivalent of the distance to the moon and back, each year. Our charitable purpose is to help older and vulnerable people in our community live happy, healthy, and independent lives in their own homes. We support thousands of people in Hertfordshire, and ensuring our clients wellbeing and safety is our priority. Who delivers your meals? Meals are delivered by our dedicated and caring Community Team delivery drivers between 11:30am and 2pm every day. All of our staff have police checks, are regularly trained in supporting older people and those living with dementia, as well as being trained in food safety and nutrition. All of our staff are paid at least the Living Wage. How do we support our clients at home? We work closely with the Fire & Rescue Service, Police, and Trading Standards, who occasionally come out with our Community Team delivery drivers on their rounds to make sure our clients are safe and secure. We also have a no reply procedure in place to ensure that if a client does not answer the door, we follow up to make sure that every client is safe. We also work closely with other organisations, such as Age UK Hertfordshire, Carers in Herts, Herts Careline, HertsHelp, and Small Acts of Kindness to ensure our clients are safe and well. Our Community Team members will carry out welfare checks to ensure our clients wellbeing, such as checking they are drinking enough in hot weather and that they are keeping warm in winter. We will plate or cut up meals if required, and will get our clients a drink if they would like one. Contacting us? Our sites are open from 8am until 3.30pm, 7 days a week. You can call or our friendly team to change or cancel your meals. Out of hours, you can also leave a message on our answering machine which is checked every morning. 8 Our wider services Did you know we also offer a range of nutritious breakfast and tea meals? These are delivered at the same time as your hot meal and dessert. The tea meal will be placed in your fridge for eating later in the day, and your breakfast for eating the next morning. If you would like to know more about these services, or to request a breakfast or tea menu, please contact us. Breakfast from porridge to croissants, we have a range of breakfast options to suit you, each served with a breakfast snack and drink of your choice. Only 2.75 per day Tea we offer a tempting range of sandwiches, or a cream tea if you prefer, accompanied by a dessert of your choice, and a sweet or savoury snack. Only 3.25 per day
