1 Cindy Preto Department of Entomology University of California Davis One Shields Avenue Davis, CA (mobile) EDUCATION: Ph.D. Entomology UC Davis Expected September 2018 B.S. Viticulture & Enology UC Davis December 2013 Minor: Agricultural Pest Management PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: University of California, Davis Graduate Student Researcher VII April 2014 to present My primary responsibility was to study the behavior and biology of the three-cornered alfalfa hopper in vineyards to contribute to our understanding of the grapevine-virusvector relationship that will assist in the development of management strategies to mitigate the spread of red blotch virus. This included a two-year documentation of the three-cornered alfalfa hopper s seasonal dynamics in vineyards, tracking insect girdling of Vitis vinifera, determining feeding and reproductive weed and cover crop hosts, testing oviposition preferences of reproductive plant species, and determining if Vitis vinifera is a reproductive host. In addition, I assisted our lab in mapping vineyards infected with red blotch virus, collected and site identified potential insect vectors in the field, and sampled and processed weeds for red blotch virus testing via Q-PCR. A side project included a two-year study on the population dynamics of three leafhopper species in the vineyard. Supervisor: Frank Zalom (Distinguished Professor of Entomology, UC Davis) Contained Research Facility, Davis Student Assistant III June 2013 to April 2014 My primary responsibility was to document the impacts of temperature on the development of the European grapevine moth. This included taking daily samples at three different temperatures in which head capsule measurements of the larvae were documented to determine developmental stage. Subsequent responsibilities included rearing the brown marmorated stink bug colony for the USDA-ARS fumigation studies. Supervisor: Spencer Walse (Research Chemist, USDA-ARS) Provenance Vineyards, Rutherford, CA Cellar Intern August 2012 to November 2012 My responsibilities included barrel inventory and labeling, quality control for bottling, operating the press, various additions to must/wine, acid trials, inoculation of must, racking wine, pump overs, sanitizing tanks, and ph and Brix measurements. Supervisor: Trevor Durling (Chief Winemaker, Beaulieu Vineyards) 1
