A CABAL OF CLARET This parcel comes to us with a familiar story: our consignor simply has too much wine. He purchased massive quantities of wines on release and over the years, he found that every nook, cranny, gap and floor space in his professional storage lockers had been overtaken with wines. Merely moving enough boxes to be able to stand in the lockers was an exercise in patience. This consignor is a kind, thoughtful and generous man and his spirit of goodwill is reflected in the wines. Heritage specialists shared many bottles with him over the summer and they all showed perfectly. He has a special passion for wines he has never tried before and is often more excited to taste the strange, old and mature than he is in tasting a big name. His curiosity for wines he has never tried before drives him to continue to seek out and find new wonders in the vast world of wine, a glorious mission that we all hope to share with him in the years to come. But in the meantime, he has released a collection of his wines in the hopes that he will be able to find some of the more mature darlings in his cellar. Of particular note are more than 15 cases of First-Growth and their rightbank equivalents, a 2002 Assortment from DRC, and an exceedingly rare Magnum of Le Pin. 4 Chateau Petrus 1993 Pomerol lscl, tl A candidate for the most concentrated wine of the vintage, this 1993 exhibits a saturated purple/plum color, and a sweet nose of black fruits, Asian spices, and vanilla. Huge and formidably rich, this powerful, dense, super-pure wine is a tour de force in winemaking. For a vintage not known for wines of this immense richness and length, this brawny, splendidly endowed Petrus possesses low acidity and high tannin, suggesting that 8-10 years of cellaring are required. This should be a 30-year wine, as well as the vintage s longest-lived effort. Very impressive! (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #109, Feb. 1997) Estimate: $1,300-$1,700 Starting Bid: $1,000 5 Chateau Petrus 2004 Pomerol Bottle (2) The dark plum/ruby-tinged 2004 Petrus possesses high acidity as well as copious amounts of sweet cherries and black currants intermixed with hints of cola, earth, and truffles. Deep, mediumbodied, concentrated, ripe flavors are excruciatingly firm and tannic. This backward, structured, muscular Pomerol requires a decade of cellaring, but it possesses the potential to be the longest lived wine of the vintage, lasting years. (93 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #171, June 2007) Estimate: $3,000-$4,000 Starting Bid: $2,400 1 Chateau Le Pin 1999 Pomerol It is exotic and sexy, with a cunning display of super-ripe mocha and toast-infused, jammy black cherry fruit, low acidity, and a savory personality. It appears ready to drink, but will undoubtedly take on more delineation and structure as its ages in the bottle. (93 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #140, Apr. 2002) Estimate: $1,300-$1,700 Starting Bid: $1,000 2 Chateau Le Pin 2001 Pomerol Its deep ruby/plum/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of creme de cassis, cherry liqueur, plums, licorice, caramel, and sweet toast. This flamboyant, opulently textured, rich, concentrated Pomerol is a brilliant success as well as one of the wines of the vintage for Its low acidity and extraordinary ripeness suggest early drinkability, but it has proven it can last for years. 3 8 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1999 Bottle (8) This prodigious wine is both elegant and intensely flavored, and almost diaphanous in its layers that unfold with no heaviness. An opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by a complex bouquet of lead pencil, graphite, cedar, creme de cassis, toast, and vanilla. It is medium-bodied, with extravagant layers of richness yet little weight, and a finish that is all sweetness, ripeness, and harmony. (95 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #140, Apr. 2002) Estimate: $4,750-$6,000 Starting Bid: $3,750 9 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2000 Bottle (2) A blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, the wine still has a dark ruby/purple color and an extraordinarily youthful nose of graphite, black currants, sweet, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and flowers. The wine is rich, medium to full-bodied, but has that ethereal elegance and purity that is always Lafite. (98+ pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #189, June 2010) Estimate: $2,200-$3,000 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2001 Magnum (2) The 2001 Lafite Rothschild s deep, saturated plum/purple color is accompanied by lead pencil liqueur-like notes intermixed with sweet red and black currants, plums, and cedar. This blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot is a classic example of Lafite. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, with intense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears to be on a rapid evolutionary track, at least in comparison to recent Lafite vintages that have been far more backward and powerful. (94 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #153, June 2004) Estimate: $2,000-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2003 The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estate s great classics, the Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style. It is just coming into its plateau of maturity where it should hold for years. This is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage make no mistake about that. (100 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #214, Aug. 2014) Estimate: $850-$1,200 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2004 This beautiful, stunningly dense purple-colored effort (includes about 90% Cabernet Sauvignon) offers up precise notes of graphite, black cherries, cassis, scorched earth, and minerals. Medium to full-bodied with fabulous fruit, impressive richness, refreshing acidity, and sweet tannin, this beauty should be approachable in 4-5 years, and last for three decades. As Lafite Rothschilds go, this is somewhat of a sleeper vintage. (95 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #171, June 2007) Estimate: $6,000-$8,000 Starting Bid: $4,750 Auction #5367 Friday, September 14, :00 PM PT 7

13 Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2006 Bottle (2) Lafite s severe selection process (42% made it into the grand vin) resulted in a full-bodied wine boasting an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, truffles, lead pencil shavings, and sensationally sweet, ripe black currant and cedar notes. A wine of extraordinary intensity, texture, and depth with silky tannins as well as awesome concentration, this has turned out to be a remarkable Lafite Rothschild that should be drinkable much earlier than the 2005, but age for three decades. (97 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #181, Feb. 2009) Estimate: $1,100-$1,400 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Latour 1993 scl 2002 scl Estimate: $650-$850 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Latour lbsl Bottle (3) Deep garnet-brick in color, the nose is well developed, displaying dried berry, leather, vanilla pod and anise notes with a faint whiff of potpourri. The palate is wonderfully fleshy and opulent with velvety, approachable tannins and a long finish. (96 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, In Asia, Nov. 2012) Estimate: $1,200-$1,500 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Latour 1998 Bottle (3)...the 1998 possesses a dark garnet/purple color in addition to a complex bouquet of underbrush, cedar, walnuts, and licoricetinged black currants. (90 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #134, Apr. 2001) Estimate: $1,000-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Latour 1999 Bottle (2) Readers looking for a modern day version of Latour s magnificent 1962 or 1971 should check out the sensational 1999 Latour. It is a big, concentrated offering, exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color, and a classic nose of minerals, black currants, leather, and vanilla. The wine is long, ripe, and medium-bodied, with high levels of sweet tannin. (94 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #140, Apr. 2002) Estimate: $800-$1, Chateau Latour 2000 Bottle (2) Deep garnet in color, the 2000 Latour has aromas of kirsch, creme de cassis and dried mulberries with nuances of leather, incense, salami and fertile loam. The palate is just starting to mature into a wonderfully satiny texture, with layer upon layer of berry preserve, baking spice and earth notes resulting in a wine of incredible poise. (99 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, In Asia, Nov. 2012) Estimate: $1,400-$1,800 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau Latour 2004 Bottle (2) A terrific effort from Administrator Frederic Engerer and owner Francois Pinault, the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2004 Latour exhibits a strong cassis character intermixed with notes of crushed rocks, earth, cedar, and forest floor. Racy, elegant, but powerful with medium to full body, and sweet tannin, it will benefit from 5-7 years of cellaring, and should keep for three decades. It is a very impressive offering. (95 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #171, June 2007) Estimate: $800-$1, Chateau Latour 2005 Bottle (2) The 2005 Latour (87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot) is a spectacular effort from Château Latour. It has an inky plum/purple color and a gorgeous nose of graphite, crème de cassis, and floral notes with some forest floor in the background. It is full-bodied, super-concentrated, and for my taste, probably one of the two or three most intense, rich, and complex wines of the entire Médoc. The wine has great texture, purity and a finish of close to 40 or 45 seconds. The tannins are surprisingly sweet, even in this large-scaled, masculine wine. Drink it over the next 50+ years. (98 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #219, June 2015) Estimate: $1,200-$1,500 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Margaux 1995 Margaux Bottle (2) Medium garnet colour going brick at the rim. The nose is beginning to showing signs of evolution with aromas of leather, game, warm cassis, dried plums and cloves. Medium to high acidity, medium body and medium to firm, fine tannins support earthy, blackcurrant-preserve fruit. Long finish. (95 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, In Asia, May 2009) Estimate: $800-$1,100 8 To view full descriptions, enlargeable images and bid online, visit HA.com/5367

22 Chateau Margaux 1999 Margaux Bottle (3) The sexy, dark plum/purple-colored 1999 Margaux is already revealing complex aromatics. This surprisingly charming and round offering is reminiscent of a vintage such as Although neither a blockbuster nor a heavyweight, it grows in the mouth revealing tremendous length as well as purity. Administrator Paul Pontallier prefers it to the more austere 1998, as do I. This is an archetypical Chateau Margaux of richness, finesse, balance, and symmetry. (94 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #140, Apr. 2002) Estimate: $950-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Margaux 2000 Margaux The extraordinary seductiveness, complex aromatics, and purity it exhibits lead me to believe it has reached its window of full maturity. Medium-bodied, with layers of concentration, stunning blue, red, and black fruits intermixed with spring flowers, a subtle dosage of new oak, and a distinctive personality that is elegant while at the same time powerful and substantial, this is a multidimensional wine that was extremely approachable and drinkable in both tastings I had of it. The color remains a healthy, even opaque bluish/purple, but there is no reason to hesitate to drink it. (100 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #189, June 2010) Estimate: $750-$ Chateau Margaux 2001 Margaux Bottle (3) Performing well from bottle, Chateau Margaux s 2001, which is somewhat reminiscent of both the 1985 and 1999, is an elegant, seamlessly constructed effort with a deep ruby/purple color, and a beautiful nose of flowers, creme de cassis, blackberries, and cedar. A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, this forward, opulent beauty can be drunk now or cellared for years. This is one of the most elegant wines of the vintage. (93 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #153, June 2004) Estimate: $900-$1,200 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Margaux 2002 Margaux lscl Magnum (1) Performing better from bottle than at any time in cask (which of course is the objective of great winemaking, isn t it?), this wine reveals a dense ruby/purple color in a style somewhat reminiscent of the 1988 but with more power, concentration, and volume. It has a beautifully elegant nose of black fruits intermixed with truffle, flower, and oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, dense, with wonderful precision, freshness, and a long, full-bodied finish with impressive levels of concentration. (93 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #158, Apr. 2005) Estimate: $650-$850 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Margaux 2003 Margaux Bottle (3) This was the finest performance by this wine that I have seen since it was released. I did not expect the 2003 Chateau Margaux to show this well in a vintage where the southern part of the Medoc was clearly less impressive than the north. However, it is a beautiful, dark plum/purple-tinged effort with sensational aromatics, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a youthfulness, precision and freshness that belie what one generally associates with this vintage. It can be drunk now and over the next years. Kudos to Chateau Margaux. (98 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #214, Aug. 2014) Estimate: $1,300-$1,700 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau Margaux 2003 Margaux Magnum (1) Estimate: $900-$1,200 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Margaux 2004 Margaux Bottle (5) The supple-textured 2004 Chateau Margaux is reminiscent of the 2001 or It exhibits a superb blue/purple color to the rim as well as sweet aromas of flowers, blueberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and smoke, superb fruit intensity, medium body, classic elegance, and silky, sweet tannin in the long finish. This beauty can be drunk now or cellared for two decades or more. (93 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #171, June 2007) Estimate: $1,600-$2,000 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau Margaux 2005 Margaux Bottle (3)...the 2005 Margaux, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, boasts a dense opaque blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and, despite its having spent two years in 100% new wood, only a subtle touch of toasty oak. Although full-bodied, the wine seems light on its feet because of the silky tannins as well as the great gravel terroir from which it comes. Beautiful purity, length, and nobility define this modern day classic. (98 pts. 7 31 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000 Bottle (4) A rich, tannic, earthy style, with loads of creme de cassis and floral notes, the final blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot is a full-bodied wine with plenty of coffee, earth, chocolatey notes, and still plenty of tannin to resolve. With fullbodied, meaty, powerful, dry flavors as well as a huge finish, this high class wine should be at its finest between (95+ pts. Dense purple, this is one of the biggest, richest wines I tasted from the Médoc. It is full-bodied, pure, and impressively endowed. Certainly the selection process and the vineyard have come through in admirable form. This wine has a certain accessibility due to the sweetness of the tannin, but it is multidimensional, with a majestic mouthfeel and length. Drink it over the next 30+ years. (97 pts. It seems to be cut from the same mold as years such as 1979 and There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It is made in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacy interwoven with power and ripeness. (93 pts. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones. 8 39 Chateau Haut Brion 2003 Pessac-Leognan 1lscl Bottle (5) The blockbuster 2003 Haut-Brion (13% alcohol) possesses extremely high tannin, but that component is well-concealed by a cascade of mulberry, blackberry, cherry, and plum-like fruit. There is even a hint of figs under the blue and red fruit spectrum. While broad and ripe with a sweet, glyceral mouthfeel as well as a long, powerful, persistent finish, it retains its elegance and nobility. (95 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #164, Apr. 2006) Estimate: $1,500-$2,000 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau Haut Brion 2004 Pessac-Leognan The dark plum/ruby-hued 2004 Haut-Brion exhibits a noble, discrete, smoky bouquet revealing notions of plum liqueur, black currants, sweet cherries, and subtle earth. In addition to its aromatic complexity, this medium-bodied effort reveals classic elegance and delicacy as well as sweet fruit in the mouth and a long finish. Give this streamlined, civilized wine 2-4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following years. It is amazingly similar to Haut-Brion s (92 pts. Extremely powerful, full-bodied and superbly concentrated with good acidity and high but round tannins, this massive La Mission-Haut- Brion should take its place among this estate s most hallowed vintages when it hits full maturity in another one to two decades. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. It feels wonderfully structured and comes with an insistent grip that coats the mouth. This is backward and almost surly, but you have to stand back and admire the precision and arching structure on the mineral-rich finish. Top-dog Saint Emilion? That s for sure. (97 pts. 12 67 Chateau Leoville Las Cases 1986 St. Julien 1bn, 2lbsl Bottle (3)...the 1986 a monument to classicism, with great tannin, extraordinary delineation, and a huge, full-bodied nose of sweet, ripe cassis fruit intermixed with vanilla, melon, fruitcake, and a multitude of spices. The wine has always been phenomenally concentrated, yet wonderfully fresh and vigorous. The wine still seems young, yet it is hard to believe it is not close to full maturity. This wine s hallmark remains a sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Yet the wine has retained its intrinsic classicism, symmetry, and profound potential for complexity and elegance. The black/purple color is followed by a spectacular nose of cassis, cherry liqueur, pain grille, and minerals. It is powerful and rich on the attack, with beautifully integrated tannin, massive concentration, yet no hint of heaviness or disjointedness. As this wine sits in the glass it grows in stature and richness. It is a remarkable, seamless, palate-staining, and extraordinarily elegant wine - the quintessential St.-Julien. (98 pts. It has a dense bluish/purple color to the rim and an extraordinary nose of blueberries and mulberries, with blacker cassis and blackberry entering the picture. 13 76 Chateau Pichon Lalande 1982 ts, bsl, ssos One of the monumental wines of the last century is the 1982 Pichon Lalande. Since bottling, it has flirted with perfection, and was a sprinter out of the gate, which gave rise to questions about how quickly it would begin its decline. However, at age 27, it retains all its glossy, rich, flamboyant cassis fruit, chocolaty, berry jam-like notes, and plenty of earthy, foresty flavors. This is a full-bodied, extravagantly rich Pichon Lalande seemingly devoid of acidity and tannin, but the wine is incredibly well-balanced and pure. It is an amazing effort! (100 pts. Interestingly, the tannins are slightly less refined than those of the Echézeaux but it matches it in virtually ever other category. Rouget vlwasl The heavy wood spice that dominated the concentrated black fruit from cask has now largely, if not completely, been absorbed and leads to round, sexy, seductive, earthy, nicely rich and detailed flavors of excellent intensity and fine length. This is still relatively primary though the depth is slowly emerging and while it will undoubtedly be a long term cellar candidate, it should be close to its majority in another 7 to 10 years. Note that I have upgraded my view of this wine considerably as I was not at all sure that it could successfully integrate this much wood but indeed it has. (94 pts. 17 95 La Grande Rue 2005 F. Lamarche Bottle (2) A hint of menthol adds nuance to the mostly highly-spiced red berry fruit nose that is quite reserved if beautifully complex while leading to sweet, delicious, generous and round medium full flavors that are classy and refined, all wrapped in a strikingly persistent and explosive finish. This offers excellent cellar potential and at this early stage the wood, which is normally fairly prominent, is already well integrated but note that this will need every bit of 15 years, perhaps even slightly longer, to arrive at its prime as it s very structured. (95 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound #30, Apr. 2008) Estimate: $700-$900 Starting Bid: $ Chambolle Musigny 2003 Les Amoureuses, J.F. Mugnier This is much different as the pretty, complex and spicier black fruit aromas have a distinct floral character to them and introduce ripe and very sweet plum-infused flavors that deliver excellent density and fine purity. This is a very ripe and forward wine but one that retains a fine sense of harmony and balance due to a certain underlying reserve that was also present in cask. (90 pts. It is a complex wine that changes constantly in the glass. At times it is the wine s dark fruit that dominates, while at others it is the aromatics that take center stage. I especially like the way the Chaumes blossoms on the palate. The finish is rich, textured and totally seductive. (94 pts. There is excellent richness to the powerful, dense, detailed and sappy flavors that possess plenty of dry extract that coats the palate on the beautifully persistent and still moderately firm finish. Like many of the better 2002s this is clearly still on the way up and while it s not so far away that it couldn t be enjoyed now with air, I would be inclined to give this another 5 to 7 years of cellar time first. I like how seamlessly the oak is integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and a crisp line of acidity. This is the oldest vintage that feels as if it could benefit from more bottle age. This is very fine. (91 pts. This is an extremely rich wine and because of the influence of the wood, the detail that will very likely come with time in bottle has not yet developed but this is so concentrated yet balanced that it s only a matter of time. This will live for ages and somewhat surprisingly, this is actually approachable now simply because it is so concentrated yet I suspect that when this finally shuts down, it will stay there for the better part of a decade. Opaque purple-colored, it boasts spectacular, soaring aromatics of vanilla, minerals, coffee, blackberries, licorice, and cassis. In the mouth, layer after layer unfold powerfully yet gently. As usual, this complex effort reminds me of a hypothetical blend of a great and Graves (such as La Mission Haut-Brion). The spring frosts lowered yields noticeably resulting in a wine that is a bit darker and heavier than is the norm. The rest of the vintage was on the warmer side, which gave the wine much of its ripeness and body. Mocha, espresso, licorice and sweet spices all wrap around the palate. (95 pts. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate #204, Dec. 2012) Estimate: $6,500-$8,500 Starting Bid: $5, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Bottle (3) A wine of remarkable precision, the 2009 is totally dialed in from start to finish. Layers of intensely sweet, perfumed fruit are woven together with remarkable elegance and sheer polish. (98 pts. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate #204, Dec. 2012) Estimate: $6,500-$8,500 Starting Bid: $5, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Bottle (3) The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon brings together so many of the elements that make Screaming Eagle such a great and distinctive wine. Crushed rocks, graphite, menthol, plums, black cherries and mint all jump from the glass. Power, structure and finesse all come together in this remarkably vivid, dazzling wine. (95-97 pts. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate #204, Dec. 2012) Estimate: $7,500-$9,500 Starting Bid: $6, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Bottle (3) A vivid, nuanced wine, the 2011 Screaming Eagle is absolutely impeccable. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke and licorice open up in the glass, followed by more savory notes that develop later. The 2011 gets better and better in the glass, as the flavors become even more precise and chiseled. Hints of pencil shavings, leather, cedar and menthol add nuance on the super-expressive finish. This is a stellar showing from Screaming Eagle. (96+ pts. Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec. 2014) Estimate: $6,000-$8,000 Starting Bid: $4, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 Bottle (3) The perfect 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Screaming Eagle is composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Made in the classic, iconic Screaming Eagle style that the original proprietress, Jean Philipps, first shased in the early 1990s, before the winery was sold to Stan Kroenke, the inky/purple-colored, seamless 2012 possesses an extraordinary set of aromatics consisting of pure blackcurrant liqueur, licorice, acacia flowers, graphite and a subtle hint of new oak. Full-bodied, opulent and voluptuous, this profound wine is as prodigious as I thought it would be last year when tasted from barrel. It should age effortlessly for 20 or more years. (100 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #215, Oct. 2014) Estimate: $7,000-$9,000 Starting Bid: $5, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Bottle (3) The 2013 Screaming Eagle flagship wine is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc. As one might expect, the purity of the cassis, which is always a hallmark of this estate and wine, is well-displayed in this beauty. Dense purple in color, it offers up some floral notes intermixed with damp earth, blackcurrant jam, blackberry and hints of licorice and incense. This reminds me somewhat of the 2010 Screaming Eagle. Full-bodied, rich, but perfectly balanced, it s another terrific example of this iconic estate. It should drink well for 30 or more years. (97+ pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #221, Oct. 2015) Estimate: $6,000-$8,000 Starting Bid: $4,750 Auction #5367 Friday, September 14, :00 PM PT 25

125 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 Bottle (3) The telltale sign of this iconic wine is its extraordinary purity of crème de cassis fruit, which is displayed abundantly in the It doesn t quite have the structure and mass of the 2013, but this sexy, up-front, opaque ruby/purple-colored wine is seamlessly constructed, full-bodied, and has a long finish with silky tannins. This seems to float across that palate with that great fruit purity that is a characteristic of Screaming Eagle. (97 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #227, Oct. 2016) Estimate: $6,000-$8,000 Starting Bid: $4, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 Bottle (3) Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the very deep purple-black colored 2015 Screaming Eagle leaps from the glass with notes of freshly crushed black currants, black cherries and blackberries with suggestions of cigar box, black raspberries, red currants, chocolates, pencil lead and cast-iron pan plus a touch of potpourri. Medium to fullbodied with a rock-solid backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, it features the most incredible black and red fruit layers and finishes with incredible vibrancy and depth. (100 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate #236, Apr. 2018) Estimate: $6,500-$8,500 Starting Bid: $5, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Second Flight The impressive 2010 Second Flight is composed of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of black currants, forest floor, bouquet garni and licorice. Medium to full-bodied with surprising richness and density as well as sweet tannin, this serious wine can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years. (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #209, Oct. 2013) Estimate: $2,000-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1, Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Napa Valley Magnum (3) Consistently perfect from barrel and bottle multiple times, the 2010 is one of the recent blockbuster efforts from Spottswoode. Superb aromatics of spring flowers, blue and black fruits, forest floor and a touch of toast, are followed by a wine of exceptional intensity, texture, purity and a full-bodied finish with velvety, but noticeable tannins. This is still extremely young, but also remarkably impressive even though it is only six years of age. Expect this to hit its prime in about 10 years and last for at least 40. (100 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #226, Aug. 2016) Estimate: $1,300-$1,700 Starting Bid: $1, Stag s Leap Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 1991 Cask 23 5bn, 5wrl Bottle (5) The superb 1991 Cask 23 Proprietary Red Wine appears to be one of the truly outstanding examples of this expensive proprietary red wine. The wine s saturated dark purple color is followed by a huge, unevolved but sexy nose of toasty new oak, dense, black-cherry and jammy cassis fruit, and vague scents of underbrush and spice. Extremely rich and concentrated, it offers intriguing blackcurrant and coffee flavors, full body, remarkable harmony, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. (96 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #96, Dec. 1994) Estimate: $800-$1, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 Second Flight Very deep purple-black, the 2014 Second Flight (composed of 57% Merlot and 43% Cabernet Sauvignon with no Cabernet Franc) is a little closed at this youthful stage, offering glimpses of blueberry compote, blackberry pie and cassis notions with touches of garrigue, bay leaves, black truffles, rose hips and underbrush plus a hint of wood smoke. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers wonderful freshness, with very firm, very finely grained tannins and layers of vibrant black fruits, finishing on a profound minerally note. With this vintage, we can see something of a stylistic departure, offering an expression of Merlot that is bright, refreshing, elegant and perfumed, and it is perhaps more similar to Screaming Eagle in terms of style than it has ever been. Beautiful! (96 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate #236, Apr. 2018) Estimate: $1,900-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1,500 Auction #5367 Friday, September 14, :00 PM PT 27

RARE FRENCH AND ITALIAN WINE FROM A FRIEND AND CLIENT The following wines come to us from a very-long-time friend in wine who has drank countless cases of wine with our specialist over the years. His unmatched palate and gregarious demeanor make him a favorite for a long dinner with world class wine. Selections on offer today include some of the rarest wines in the world, including the elusive Monfortino from Giacomo Conterno and single bottles of Burgundy from the most coveted of producers such as Rousseau, Roumier, Jayer, Mugnier and more. All of the wines were purchased near release and stored in a perfect temperature and humidity controlled cellar prior to release for this sale. Samples over the years, including a recent 1985 Monfortino, showed incredibly young. 131 Chambertin 1991 A. Rousseau lbsl, ssos This has always possessed one of the most complex and kaleidoscopically brillant noses of any recent vintage of the Rousseau Chambertin with its gorgeous array of secondary fruit, earth, spice, game, tea, floral and sandalwood nuances. There is equally fine complexity to the powerful, concentrated and intensely stony medium weight plus flavors that culminate in a hugely long finish that displays just a hint of an edge. This is a magisterially elegant wine that delivers the classic power without weight expression that is so Chambertin in character. I would further observe that the 91 Cham just seems to get better and better because while there are still mildly firm finishing tannins, the mouth coating richness seems to keep pace. Only a handful of Burgundies ever show this level of quality and this has to be one of the top five wines of the vintage. In sum this is reference standard Chambertin that should drink well for years, perhaps even decades, to come. Be sure to give this at least 30 minutes of air. (97 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, June 2016) Estimate: $3,500-$4,500 Starting Bid: $2, Chambertin 1990 Clos de Beze, A. Rousseau lbsl The ripe but not roasted nose is comprised by wonderfully complex aromatics of now entirely secondary fruit that is nuanced by notes of underbrush, earth, dried herbs and spice elements. There is still a bit of unresolved tannin to the still lightly structured medium-bodied flavors that possess very fine if not truly distinguished length on the otherwise well-balanced, rich and velvety finish. (92 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, June 2016) Estimate: $3,000-$4,000 Starting Bid: $2, Bonnes Mares 1993 G. Roumier lbsl This has always been a wine that I have admired with its terrific and now fully mature nose that displays really lovely breadth in the form of leather, earth and full-on secondary aromas though no sous bois. There is excellent richness to the equally complex big-bodied and velvety flavors that possess a really lovely texture, all wrapped in beautifully long and well-balanced finale. (95 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, June 2016) Estimate: $2,000-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1, Bonnes Mares 1993 G. Roumier nl Magnum (1) Estimate: $6,000-$8,000 Starting Bid: $4, Echezeaux 1990 H. Jayer Knock out aromas of kirsch, blackberry extract and ripe earth lead to big, robust, quite structured, deep and sappy flavors of incredible depth and complexity and as grand as those characteristics are, it is the simply mindbending length that really sets this apart from the average Jayer Ech. A wine that should last for 25 years if well stored (93 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Dec. 1996) Estimate: $5,500-$7,500 Starting Bid: $4, Vosne Romanee 1988 Cros Parantoux, Meo-Camuzet lbsl, ssos A wonderfully complex nose with strong secondary aromas (but no sous-bois) and plenty of Vosne spice notes blend into delicious, powerful, full-bodied flavors underpinned by buried tannins that are ripe and well-integrated on the beautifully long finish. (91 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, July 2012) Estimate: $2,000-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1, To view full descriptions, enlargeable images and bid online, visit HA.com/5367

137 Grands Echezeaux 1993 R. Engel lscl You never know when things are going to show up after a very long absence as I hadn t had this beauty since Not surprisingly it has changed radically since then as the color has lightened somewhat as there is now a hint of bricking though the center remains a relatively deep ruby. Moreover the once primary fruit has become entirely secondary in character along with ample amount of spice, earth, leather, Asian-style tea and soft floral hints. There is still excellent vibrancy and density to the muscular big-bodied flavors that possess terrific complexity and detail, all wrapped in a hugely long and well-balanced finale. This is impeccably well-balanced and harmonious and should live for years. (94 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Apr. 2016) Estimate: $750-$ Romanee St. Vivant 1998 Hudelot-Noellat Deep ruby. This is extremely floral with dried rose petal and violet notes that highlight the Oriental spice character of the nose that serves as a dramatic introduction to the sappy, delicious, extraordinarily complex and deep middle weight flavors that culminate in huge length. This is stylish, sexy and classy with superb finishing power and impeccable balance. The wine of the flight and this should age for a long time. (94 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound #18, Apr. 2005) Estimate: $550-$750 Starting Bid: $ Chambolle Musigny 1990 Les Amoureuses, Comte de Vogue nl Estimate: $450-$550 Starting Bid: $ Musigny 1993 Vieilles Vignes, Comte de Vogue lbsl Still relatively if no longer completely primary with a nose that is the crystalline essence of black cherry pinot sap and leads to massively structured and thick flavors with dense, ripe tannins that are completely buffered by all the extract. This is flat out great and still quite youthful though the initial signs of maturity are now evident. In my view, this is the best de Vogüé Musigny since at least 71 and is a monument in the making as it will live for 50 years without breathing hard. Multiple, and largely consistent, notes though a few bottles have seemed excessively hard on the dry finish. Still, the two most recent bottles were almost perfect with a silky mouth feel and well-integrated tannins. (97 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Dec. 2011) Estimate: $750-$ Musigny 1988 J.F. Mugnier Estimate: $850-$1,200 Starting Bid: $ Hermitage 1988 J.L. Chave lscl Magnum (1) And lastly, the 1988 Hermitage is an elegant, perfumed and mineral-laced effort that s drinking at point. Giving up plenty of sweet cherry and red currants, leather, crushed rock and hints of green olive, it has no hard edges, solid mid-palate richness and a focused finish. It s a mature, elegant and classy Hermitage to drink over the coming 4-5 years. (95 pts. Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate #214, Aug. 2014) Estimate: $1,000-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Hermitage 1990 La Chapelle, P. Jaboulet lscl, ssos The modern day equivalent of the 1961, it deserves all the attention it has garnered. The color remains an opaque purple, with only a slight pink at the edge. Spectacular aromatics offer up aromas of incense, smoke, blackberry fruit, cassis, barbecue spice, coffee, and a touch of chocolate. As it sits in the glass, additional nuances of pepper and grilled steak emerge. There is extraordinary freshness for such a mammoth wine in addition to abundant tannin, an amazing 60-second finish, and a level of glycerin and thick, fleshy texture that have to be tasted to be believed. (100 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #129, June 2000) Estimate: $425-$550 Starting Bid: $ Taittinger Vintage Champagne 1996 Comtes de Champagnes Bottle (2) (96 pts. 26 147 Barolo 1982 Monfortino Riserva, G. Conterno lbsl, lcc A fairly mature Barolo with rich, spicy chocolate, tar and violet flavors, hints of carmel and leather that show complexity and length. Lots of tannins make this a candidate for the cellar. (91 pts. Wine Spectator, June 1987) Estimate: $1,400-$1,800 Starting Bid: $1, Barolo 1985 Monfortino Riserva, G. Conterno lscl Conterno s 1985 Barolo Riserva Monfortino remains one the most pleasurable and rewarding vintages of this wine for current drinking as it is endowed with a generous amount of super-ripe, opulent fruit. (97 pts. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, May 2008) Estimate: $1,500-$2,000 Starting Bid: $1, Barolo 1998 Monfortino Riserva, G. Conterno lbsl, nl The 1998 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a monumental effort. A deep dark red, it opens with a huge nose of licorice, roses and cocoa, then flows onto the palate with masses of sweet, concentrated dark fruit that go on forever. Notes of mineral and leather gradually develop in the glass, adding further complexity as this great wine begins to reveal its expansive and profound personality. The 1998 is unusually open right now. As was the case with the 1997 at this stage, it should offer a brief drinking window over the next 6 months or so before shutting down for what is likely to be an extended period prior to awakening in the glorious prime of its life. (97 pts. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate #167, Oct. 2006) Estimate: $550-$750 Starting Bid: $ Barolo 1998 Monfortino Riserva, G. Conterno 1lscl, 2 Magnum (2) Estimate: $2,400-$3,250 Starting Bid: $1, Barolo 1982 Cascina Francia, G. Conterno lscl The current releases from Conterno include the fabulous 1985 Barolo Cascina Francia Serralunga. It possesses the classic Nebbiolo nose of roses and tar, as well as masses of rich red and black fruits. Unctuous and intense, with spectacular fruit, it offers great fragrance and massive body to go along with its high extract and huge tannin. (94 pts. 27 ELITE CELLAR PRUNING They say that cellars only come in one size: too small. In the case of this kind consignor, he finds himself with the enviable problem of having too much amazing wine he won t be able to drink in his lifetime. This consignment is truly a roll call of the world s finest, with 1961 Latour perhaps the best Bordeaux of the 20th century listed alongside a banded case of 2012 La Tache. The pre-2000 vintages were purchased many years ago from reputable Texas retailers and the post-2000 wines were purchased on release. All of the wines were carefully stored in a temperature controlled home cellar prior to release for sale. 153 Chateau Latour 1961 hs, bsl, wasl...liquid perfection, exhibiting fragrant, cedary, truffle, leather, mineral, and sweet, jammy aromatics, full-bodied, voluptuous textures, exquisite purity and concentration, and a layered, highlynuanced finish that represents the essence of compellingly great wine. The 1961 has been fully mature for over 15 years, but it seems to get richer, holding onto its succulence and fat, and developing more aromatic nuances without losing any sweetness or concentration. An extraordinary wine, it is unquestionably one of the Bordeaux legends of the century! (100 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #129, June 2000) Estimate: $2,000-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau Latour 2000 The extremely rich, black/purple color to the rim is followed by a wine with some subtle smoke, loads of minerals, a hint of vanilla, and plenty of creme de cassis as well as roasted meat and a slight scorched earth character. Broad, savory, and rich, the wine seems to be about 5 years away from full maturity and should drink well for at least more years. (98 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #189, June 2010) Estimate: $4,000-$5,000 Starting Bid: $3, Chapelle d Ausone 2009 St. Emilion Representing nearly half of the production, this estate s second wine, the 2009 La Chapelle d Ausone, is an extraordinary effort. Better than many of the grand vins made during the 1970s and 1980s, it is an equal part blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc revealing an inky/blue/purple color along with notes of incense, blueberries, raspberries and crushed rocks (which give the wine a distinctive minerality). Medium to full-bodied as well as exceptionally pure, broad and opulent, it should drink well for two decades or more. (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #199, Dec. 2011) Estimate: $650-$850 Starting Bid: $ Richebourg 2011 J. Grivot This is quite floral though the nose is cool and very restrained and only aggressive swirling liberates a broad array of spice, black fruit liqueur and red currant aromas. The mineral-inflected large-scaled and muscular flavors possess a suave mouth feel on the driving, intense and gorgeously well-balanced finish that just goes on and on. This is very classy juice though note that it is not as forward as the 2011 and will require plenty of time. (95 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound #53, Jan. 2014) 157 La Tache 2012 Domaine de la Romanee Conti banded...it s clear that there is good ripeness to the spiced green tea, hoisin, soy, anise, sandalwood and rose petal aromas. The cool, pure and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors brim with both minerality and plenty of dry extract that buffers the extremely firm but not hard shaping tannins on the overtly austere if seriously persistent finish. This is perhaps best described as a block of stone at present and while the tannins are quite fine they are dense and coat the mouth. This is clearly going to need a lot of time and unlike several of the wines in the range, it s not likely to be a good candidate for early drinking. Despite the presence of plenty of volume and muscle, I would still describe 2012 as a vintage of finesse for this storied wine. In a word, brilliant. (97 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound #57, Jan. 2015) Estimate: $19,000-$26,000 Starting Bid: $15, Montrachet 2012 Comtes Lafon Estimate: $1,100-$1,400 Starting Bid: $ Dom Perignon Vintage Champagne 1982 P3 Estimate: $1,100-$1,400 Starting Bid: $ Philipponnat Vintage Champagne 2006 Clos des Goisses Bottle (8) Quite different style than usual. Is it the winemaker or the hot year that spelled out a cannon of exotic fruits and sweet pineapple aroma with low acid? delicious and probably with a serious backbone that keeps the wine alive into the next phase. Its stunning purple color is accompanied by exceptionally sweet aromas of blackberry liqueur intermixed with barbecue spices, an endearing, smoky earthiness, pepper, roasted meats, and coffee. Huge, massive, unctuously textured, and extraordinarily youthful, this impressive wine is a candidate for perfection. (98+ pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #183, June 2009) Estimate: $1,300-$1,700 Starting Bid: $1, Penfold s Grange 1999 Bottle (2) Dense ruby/purple to the edge, with a bouquet of blackberries, mulberries, and floral-like aromas, and medium to full body, the 1999 has an acid punch, but also tremendous layers of fruit and extract. (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #155, Oct. 2004) MATURE BURGUNDY FROM A FRIEND The following consignment comes to us from a long-time friend in wine and repeat consignor with vast knowledge of the intricacies of wine s most complex region. He has been a lover of wine for several decades and in that time has amassed an impressive collection that he periodically thins. The following wines were largely purchased on release and stored professionally. 167 Clos Vougeot 1990 Leroy 3cm, lbsl, crc exposing cork, ssos This is still quite deeply colored with remarkably youthful aromas of earth, game and spice hints along with now partially mature dark berry fruit notes. The big-bodied and impressively scaled flavors brim with dry extract and still possess ample supporting tannins on the hugely long and palate coating finish. This is no model of finesse or elegance but it is a robust and muscular Clos de Vougeot that is still on its way up so for my taste, I would continue to cellar it for up to another decade. (93 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Aug. 2010) Estimate: $1,800-$2,400 Starting Bid: $1, Nuits St. Georges 1990 Les Boudots, Leroy 4.5cm, crc exposing cork, sos This has always struck me as a curious effort that is somewhat cab-like because the 90 Boudots is a very ripe effort with notes of secondary fruit, spice, earth and a distinct gaminess that continues onto the meaty and impressively rich if slightly rustic big-bodied and robust flavors that culminate in a long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This isn t really my style of red Bugundy but there can be no question that this is a very high quality effort that is still drinking beautifully and will be 25 years from now and perhaps even longer. Whether one likes the style is a question for each person to consider but as I say, the quality is indubitably here. (93 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Sept. 2015) Estimate: $900-$1,200 Starting Bid: $ Vosne Romanee 1990 Les Beaux Monts, Leroy 2cm, crc exposing cork, ssos This remains quite darkly colored with obviously ripe, borderline aromas that are clearly Vosne in origin with loads of spice and secondary nuances to the black fruit and earth aromas that are followed by sexy, sappy and intense middle weight flavors that culminate in a mineral-infused, sweet and energetic finish that delivers outstanding length. This is sufficiently ripe that it is perhaps not a beacon of terroir but it remains unmistakably Vosne in basic character. This is really quite impressive and to my taste, it has arrived at its peak though one that should hold for a number of years to come. (94 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Aug. 2011) Estimate: $1,400-$1,800 Starting Bid: $1,100 Auction #5367 Friday, September 14, :00 PM PT 33

Laurent Estimate: $600-$800 Starting Bid: $ Echezeaux 1997 du Dessus, Jayer-Gilles 1tl, 2lwrl Rich, big and intense black fruit aromas with big, robust, indeed even muscular extract of black fruit flavors that deliver fine length and this is clearly still improving. A quality effort and while this evidences some oak on the nose, it should fully integrate with a few more years of bottle age. (90 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Mar. 2004) Estimate: $650-$850 Starting Bid: $ Ruchottes Chambertin 1998 F. Esmonin 3lscl A fully mature and beautifully complex nose features notes of truffle, sauvage, earth and smoked meat. There is a lovely texture to the round, delicious and caressing medium-bodied flavors that possess unusually good phenolic ripeness in the context of the vintage, all wrapped in a lingering, balanced and mouth coating finish. This is a very fine example of the appellation and one that is drinking perfectly now even in magnum format. In a word, impressive. (92 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, June 2013) Estimate: $600-$800 Starting Bid: $ Echezeaux 2011 Domaine de la Romanee Conti A discreet touch of wood sets off the gorgeously floral, ripe and wonderfully spicy nose of red currant, menthol, black cherry and cassis aromas. There is impressive volume and richness to the naturally sweet, silky and mouth coating medium weight flavors that are shaped by fine-grained tannins on the firm, complex, balanced and strikingly persistent finale that really fans out as it lingers on the palate. This wine continues to make really impressive progress. (93 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound #53, Jan. 2014) Estimate: $1,100-$1,400 Starting Bid: $850 CONNOISSEUR SELECTIONS The expertise of the consignor of this lovely group of wine is evident: 83 Cheval, 92 Leroy and Cathiard before it was cool all instantly denote this collector with a coveted Members Only type of respect. (93 pts. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book 4th Ed., Jan. 2003) Estimate: $1,200-$1,500 Starting Bid: $ Romanee St. Vivant 1990 A. Cathiard Bottle (2) Estimate: $800-$1, Clos Vougeot 1999 J. Grivot Interesting contrast of elegance and austerity with remarkably fine, intense, earthy fruit and structured flavors that offer excellent sève and solid structure. (90 pts. 32 179 La Tache 2006 Domaine de la Romanee Conti lscl...the once reserved nose is now starting to come out of its shell as there is plenty of the hallmark spice and floral components that are broad and deep and while the aromas are still on the restrained side, they are still most impressive. The big and generous flavors are an exercise in contrasts as they are at once round and rich while remaining wonderfully defined and precise with an intense minerality coming to the fore, all wrapped in a linear, precise and palate staining finish that not withstanding the initial aromatic reserve, is indeed explosive. Even at such a young age, the palate impression is entirely harmonious and the transparency and purity of expression are something to see. (96 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound #45, Jan. 2012) Estimate: $2,800-$3,750 Starting Bid: $2, Richebourg 2006 Domaine de la Romanee Conti An extremely pure and equally restrained nose of red berry fruit and a range of spices that include hoisin, soy, clove and a perfumed incense character plus intense floral notes, including rose petal and violets of which glimpses can also be found on the vibrant and very firmly structured full-bodied flavors that culminate in a long, powerful and understated finish of immense length. The character here is completely different than that of the RSV because while the muscle of the RSV is more like that of a world class gymnast, here it is body builder-like without being coarse or inelegant. Most impressive and this is a bit like the GE in that the natural elegance of the 06 vintage has tamed somewhat the inherent tendency for there to be a certain robustness in Richebourg to create a harmonious whole. Now that the wine is in bottle, it struck me as a block of stone from which only the vaguest outlines of the final form of the statue have yet to emerge. Superb potential. (95 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound #33, Jan. 2009) Estimate: $1,400-$1,800 Starting Bid: $1, Richebourg 1992 Domaine de la Romanee Conti scl Estimate: $1,100-$1,400 Starting Bid: $ Clos Vougeot 1992 Leroy lscl Moderate bricking. The expressive nose is exceptionally ripe in the context of the vintage and one that is now completely secondary in character with plenty of earth, spice and sous-bois hints. There is good intensity to the delicious, intense and solidly complex medium-weight flavors that deliver outstanding length and real verve on the reasonably well-balanced finish. (92 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound #66, Apr. 2017) Estimate: $600-$800 Starting Bid: $ Vosne Romanee 1992 Les Beaux Monts, Leroy 2lscl, 1sdc Bottle (2) Leroy, along with Ponsot, made some of the best reds of the 1992 vintage and the 92 Beaux Monts is no exception with its elegant and spicy nose that has gone full-on secondary but unlike many 92s today, there are no tertiary aromas in evidence. Similarly there is still good vibrancy to the delicious, rich and lightly mineralinflected medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine depth and length. (92 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, May 2016) Estimate: $1,200-$1,500 Starting Bid: $ Gevrey Chambertin 1991 Clos St. Jacques, A. Rousseau 2lbsl Bottle (2)...stunning with strikingly elegant aromas of mature and highly complex red berry fruit, game, earth and spice hints that complement lighter weight but utterly delicious, classy, stylish and altogether compelling medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a mineral-driven finish. (93 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Oct. 2010) Estimate: $2,600-$3,500 Starting Bid: $2, Bonnes Mares 1988 Comte de Vogue 1lscl, 1lwisl Bottle (2) Estimate: $700-$900 Starting Bid: $ Louis Roederer Vintage Champagne 1983 Cristal Magnum (2) A soft, feminine wine, the 1983 Cristal is all about balance and harmony. Round, seamless and impeccable, the 1983 is a gorgeous spot today where the flavors are mature, yet the wine retains enough depth to deliver considerable pleasure for at least another handful of years, although there is no more upside to be had. Still, it is amazing to see just how much the 1983 gains with air. Hints of caramel, almonds and spices round out the finish. This is a very pretty Cristal. (93 pts. Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct. 2014) Estimate: $1,900-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1, Krug Vintage Champagne 1985 A seductive, fully mature, spicy-flavored Champagne that s rich in texture, full in body, still quite firm in balance and long on the finish. 33 188 Ornellaia 1997 Tenuta dell Ornellaia 1nl, 3lscl Bottle (3) The estate s 1997 Ornellaia (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc) combines the large-framed opulence of the 1999 with the slightly more herbal notes found in the It is a big, plump wine packed with layers of fruit and well-integrated oak, showing outstanding length and the telltale note of sweetness on the finish that defines this vintage. Despite its approachable nature today, the 1997 appears to have enough structure to drink well for another decade. (93 pts. Antonio Galloni, In the Cellar, Apr. 2007) 189 Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Espresso, mocha, dark red berries, rose petals and spices are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2008 Harlan Estate. The wine fleshes out beautifully in the glass as it shows off its class and true pedigree. This is a decidedly ripe, forward vintage, but in exchange the wine will drink well right out of the gate. (96 pts. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate #198, Dec. 2011) Estimate: $2,600-$3,500 Starting Bid: $2, Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard DRC, ROUSSEAU AND SCREAMER FROM A FRIEND The following wines come to us from a long-time friend in wine and repeat consignor. He purchases his wines on release either directly from mailing lists or through reputable retailers and then stores them professionally. 191 Chambertin 1998 A. Rousseau lscl An elegant, ripe and detailed fresh mostly red berry fruit nose is amply complemented by a broad range of nuances, including earth, anise, clove and a whiff of oak toast that dissolves into the rich, intense, muscled and powerful flavors that are not as firmly structured as one might think for a less than 10 year old Chambertin, all wrapped in a long and focused finish. This is still young and needs another 5 to 7 years to really arrive at its full state of maturity. (93 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Apr. 2007) Estimate: $1,000-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ La Tache 1995 Domaine de la Romanee Conti lscl, #01786 Stylistically, this borrows elements from both the 97 and the 96 as it combines moderate floral notes with most of the spice, soy and hoisin of the 96 plus the densest flavors of any vintage to this point. The mid-palate doesn t have quite the same sap of the 96 and the long, dusty finish offers a hint of chocolate. This too has the potential to be very long lived. (94 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, May 2008) Estimate: $2,800-$3,750 Starting Bid: $2, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 Bottle (3) Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the very deep purple-black colored 2015 Screaming Eagle leaps from the glass with notes of freshly crushed black currants, black cherries and blackberries with suggestions of cigar box, black raspberries, red currants, chocolates, pencil lead and cast-iron pan plus a touch of potpourri. Medium to fullbodied with a rock-solid backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, it features the most incredible black and red fruit layers and finishes with incredible vibrancy and depth. 34 TEN-GALLON MOUTON AND MORE Chateau Mouton Rothschild (and one case of the lovely Cos d Estournel) from the standout Aught years await lucky buyers. The wines were purchased on release and stored in a pristine temperature- and humidity-controlled cellar in Fort Worth. After purchase, the wines had not been been touched until Heritage specialists picked these up for sale here. The wines were transported under temperature-controlled truck to our warehouse in North Hollywood. The consignor is a titan of business and prefers American wines exclusively and thus gracious offers up these beauties for sale. 195 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000 Bottle (11) A rich, tannic, earthy style, with loads of creme de cassis and floral notes, the final blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot is a full-bodied wine with plenty of coffee, earth, chocolatey notes, and still plenty of tannin to resolve. (96+ pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #189, June 2010) Estimate: $16,000-$21,000 Starting Bid: $12, Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2001 Very smoky, with berry, coffee and tobacco aromas. Full-bodied, with polished velvety tannins, plenty of fruit and a cedary aftertaste. Tight and compacted. This is better than the 2000 Mouton. It s a baby 1986 Mouton. Solid and very, very fine. Persists for a long time on the palate. (94 pts. James Suckling, Wine Spectator, Mar. 2004) Estimate: $4,000-$5,000 Starting Bid: $3, Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2005 The 2005 Mouton Rothschild (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc) has a sensational nose of crème de cassis and incense as well as a touch of lead pencil shavings and forest floor. (97 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #219, June 2015) Estimate: $6,000-$8,000 Starting Bid: $4, Chateau Cos d Estournel 2004 St. Estephe A beautiful example of the vintage, proprietor Michel Reybier and his top-notch winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats, have fashioned an exceptional wine displaying a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of boysenberries, black currants, cherries, pain grille, roasted herbs, and licorice. Medium-bodied with impressive density for the vintage, sweet tannin, and outstanding richness and length... (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #171, June 2007) Estimate: $950-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2004 I can t say much for the painting by Prince Charles on the label, but what s in the bottle is a powerful, classic, dense ruby/purplehued Mouton with a full-bodied style, brutal tannin, impressive concentration, and a primordial backwardness that will require years of cellaring. 36 THE GREATEST GENERATION OF MOUTON AND MORE From a bon vivant and celebrated oenophile comes rare Mouton, a case of 89 Pichon Lalande and four bottles of delicious Champagne, all ready to drink. The wines were purchased from reputable retailers in the year spanning and are part of a much larger collection. The wines were removed from a custom temperature and humidity controlled home cellar in Marin County, CA. 200 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1953 mtls, bsl, scl, taped label, great color I remember a friend of mine decanting a magnum of the 1953 and sticking it under my nose to share with me the incredible bouquet. In addition to the exotic aromas of soy sauce, new saddle leather, cassis, herbs, and spices, the 1953 offers a deep ruby color with some amber at the edge. Sweet and fat, with voluptuously-textured fruit, this low acid wine has no noticeable tannin. While it may be living dangerously, it is a decadent treat if it is drunk immediately after decanting. (95 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #95, Oct. 1994) Estimate: $900-$1,200 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1961 hs, lbsl Half- Huge, cedary, cassis, lead pencil, menthol-like aromas soared from the glass. The black/purple color revealed no signs of lightening or amber at the edge. Full-bodied, rich, and superintense, this was a profound bottle of 1961 Mouton that would have stood up against the compelling (98 pts. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book 3rd Ed., Dec. 1997) Estimate: $600-$800 Starting Bid: $475 A PRISTINE PARCEL OF PETRUS 73 bottles from the favored son of Pomerol, a Chateau without equal in crafting the worlds purest and greatest expression of Merlot. Entire books have been devoted to Petrus so all we will say here is that this outstanding wine, in some of the best vintages of the last 30 years, is just really darn tasty. These bottles were acquired over the years from a friend of our consignor. He had purchased them on release and stored them in a temperature- and humidity-controlled professional storage facility. Heritage Specialists picked the bottles up from our consignor s own temperaturecontrolled home cellar and transported them for refrigerated storage to Los Angeles. A few bottles here and there is rare, a six-bottle wooden case is even scarcer, but to have several full cases in the original wood is nearly unheard of, especially in conditions as pristine as these bottles. Bid with absolute confidence. 204 Chateau Petrus 1990 Pomerol, Swedish import strips partially cover capsules The 1990 Petrus remains incredibly young, one of the least evolved wines of the vintage (along with Montrose and Beausejour-Duffau). This dense ruby/purple-colored effort is beginning to hint at the massive richness and full-bodied intensity lurking beneath its wall of tannin. The vintage s sweetness, low acidity, and velvety tannins are present in abundance, and the wine is massive in the mouth as well as incredibly pure and welldelineated. I thought it would be drinkable by now, but it appears another 5-10 years will pass before it begins to reach its plateau of maturity. This wine is capable of lasting at least four more decades. An incredible achievement! (100 pts. 38 206 Chateau Petrus 1998 Pomerol 2 The 1998 Petrus is unquestionably a fabulous effort boasting a dense plum/purple color as well as an extraordinary nose of black fruits intermixed with caramel, mocha, and vanilla. Exceptionally pure, super-concentrated, and extremely full-bodied, with admirable underlying acidity as well as sweet tannin, it reveals a superb mid-palate in addition to the luxurious richness for which this great property is known. The finish lasts for seconds. (98 pts. It is much more backward than the likes of Lafleur, Trotanoy or Hosanna. Nevertheless, it is super-rich, extracted, beautifully balanced and pure. Forget it for another years, and drink it over the following half-century. This may well be among the longest-lived wines of (97+ pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #219, June 2015) Estimate: $9,500-$13,000 Starting Bid: $7, PETRUS This bottle was purchased from a very reputable retailer in North California, it was then stored professionally before release for this sale. 208 Chateau Petrus 2000 Pomerol 2 A prodigious Petrus, this wine has that extra level of intensity and complexity that is monumental...extremely full-bodied, with great fruit purity, an unmistakable note of underbrush, black truffle, intense black cherries, licorice, and mulberry, the wine seems to show no evidence of oak whatsoever. It has a sumptuous, unctuous texture, plenty of tannin, but also vibrancy and brightness. This is a remarkable wine that seems slightly more structured and massive than the 1998, which comes across as slightly more seamless, as if it were haute couture. This wine needs at least another 5-10 years of cellaring and should age for 50+ years. (100 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #189, June 2010) Estimate: $37,500-$47,500 Starting Bid: $30, Chateau Petrus 2008 Pomerol It is hard to call Petrus a sleeper of the vintage, but the 2008 will merit more attention than most consumers would think. Low yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare resulted in only 25,000 bottles of this beauty. A wine of great intensity (possibly the most concentrated wine of the vintage), this 100% Merlot boasts a dark purple color as well as a sweet perfume of mocha, caramel, black cherries, black currants, earth and forest floor. Deep, unctuously textured, full-bodied and pure, it will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring and should drink well for years. (97 pts. Full-bodied, offering amazing raspberry fruit in the core of the palate. Ultrapolished, velvety tannins wonderfully coat every inch of your palate. This will age for years ahead, but it s so lovely now. (94 pts. James Suckling, Wine Spectator, Jan. 2010) Estimate: $4,750-$6,000 Starting Bid: $3, Chateau Latour 1989 Bottle (5) Estimate: $2,000-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau Petrus 1988 Pomerol 1lscl It is a medium-bodied, rather elegant style of Petrus with a distinctive cedary, almost celery component intermixed with a hint of caramel and sweet mulberry and black cherry fruit. (91 pts. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book 4th Ed., Jan. 2003) Estimate: $8,000-$11,000 Starting Bid: $6, La Tache 1989 Domaine de la Romanee Conti lbsl, ltl, #02313 For two decades this very much seemed stuck in a time capsule as it was evolving glacially but just in the last few years full maturity has finally arrived. The hallmark spice of a great La Tâche is present in spades with outstanding aromatic complexity that includes plenty of secondary fruit development but at this point, no sous bois. There is excellent concentration to the velvety and wonderfully rich flavors that display the same wonderful depth of the nose, all wrapped in a mouth coating, delicious and hugely long finish. (94 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Apr. 2012) Estimate: $3,000-$4,000 Starting Bid: $2, La Tache 1990 Domaine de la Romanee Conti lwisl, ssos, #03415 Stunning, massive, full-on, classic La Tâche nose that displays almost unbelievable complexity so with many different elements that it is impossible to even begin to describe them all; the primary components include ethereal and still fresh pinot fruit, clove, knock out spiciness, anise, hoisin, soy and a trace of earth but these elements only hint at the sheer depth. The flavors are big, rich, refined, classy, penetrating and superbly powerful yet everything is in perfect balance and there is more than sufficient sève to balance off the still considerable tannins. The finish is intense, pure and so long that it is haunting; I can literally still taste this wine days later after I had it because it has such a dramatic and emotional impact. This is one of the finest, perhaps even the finest young Burgundy I have ever been privileged to try and it only seems to get better with each passing year. In short, this is absolutely brilliant. (99 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, June 2009) Estimate: $5,000-$7,000 Starting Bid: $4, Richebourg 1990 Domaine de la Romanee Conti ssos, #02310 The ripe and still admirably fresh and bright blackberry fruit aromas now evidence noticeable secondary character plus gorgeous spice nuances that continue onto the focused, opulent and serious big-bodied flavors that possess superb finishing complexity and persistence. There is still some tannic structure to resolve though this has excellent density of extract and impeccable balance that will permit this impressive effort to live for another 50 years. (94 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Apr. 2015) Estimate: $2,800-$3,750 Starting Bid: $2,200 Auction #5367 Friday, September 14, :00 PM PT 43

221 Montrachet 2000 Marquis de Laguiche, J. Drouhin Bottle (4) The initial signs of maturity are now present though there is still good freshness to the aromas of perfumed white flowers nuanced with touches of honey and crushed dried herbs followed by wonderfully complex, intense and relatively fine if approachable flavors that deliver excellent length. This is not especially big or powerful but it s extremely classy and more than passingly stylish. As to drinkability, we were all surprised at how forward the flavors were and while there is no rush, I would be drinking this now and over the next decade. A fine if not spectacular showing for this wine and I am honestly a bit surprised at how drinkable this is at only eight years of age. (92 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, July 2008) Estimate: $1,000-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Montrachet 2002 Marquis de Laguiche, J. Drouhin Bottle (2) Astonishingly pure fruit aromas of very ripe pear, peach, honeysuckle and lovely green fruit are nicely complemented by a subtle hint of oak spice that merges seamlessly into powerful yet exquisitely delineated, strongly mineral laden flavors of incredible length. This has an amazing depth of sève and it completely stains and coats the palate. This combination of a silky palate impression yet driving intensity make this an extremely impressive effort that should provide for another 15 years of drinkability, perhaps even a bit longer. (94 pts. Allen Meadows, Burghound, July 2008) Estimate: $800-$1, Barbaresco 1997 Asili, B. Giacosa Magnum (3) Estimate: $650-$850 Starting Bid: $ Heitz Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 1985 Martha s Vineyard...explosive richness and ripeness, as well as gobs of sweet fruit presented in a full-bodied, powerful style are objectionable. The wine was more developed and open than I expected. The mint/eucalyptus character, which can be extremely intense in the Martha s Vineyard cuvee, was presented in a subtle fashion. Expansive and chewy, with superb ripe fruit and concentration, this wine should continue to drink well for years. (94 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #98, Apr. 1995) Estimate: $2,800-$3,750 Starting Bid: $2, Opus One 1994 Bottle (5) This is an impressive effort from Opus One. The wine, a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Malbec, possesses a dark ruby/purple color, followed by a generous, complex nose of lead pencil, toasty oak, violets, and black currants. In the mouth, there is a beautiful texture, soft, generous, low acid, full-bodied richness, and a stunningly proportioned, rich, intense finish. The influence of 18 months in new French oak casks gives the wine a subtle oaky note in addition to giving it excellent delineation. Because of the wine s softness and generosity, it can be drunk now as well as over the next years. (92 pts. 42 HIGH SCORING SUPERSTARS From a passionate local comes this focused consignment of pristine Parker favorites, including the Five Horseman of Bordeaux from the underrated 2002 vintage in original wood, Cult favorites Harlan, Schrader and Kosta Browne, and the Great Growth of Australia, Grange. All of the wines were purchased on release from trusted retailers and placed in professional storage until release for this sale. 227 Chateau Haut Brion 2002 Pessac-Leognan Whether it s a coincidence, or because in relatively cool years the first-growth terroirs are brilliant, Haut-Brion has turned out a beautifully classic, medium-bodied, precise and focused 2002 boasting a deep ruby/purple color as well as strikingly elegant aromatics (crushed stones, plums, black cherries, currants, figs, and earth). The wine possesses impressively measured power and elegance offered in a medium-bodied, nicely-structured, exceptionally pure format. It is unusual for Haut-Brion to dominate La Mission Haut-Brion at such a young age, but it certainly does in the 2002 vintage. (92-94 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #149, Oct. 2003) Estimate: $3,000-$4,000 Starting Bid: $2, Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2002 A brilliant offering and a candidate for wine of the vintage, this is classic Lafite that reminded me somewhat of the 1976, although the vintage conditions were completely different. This is a medium-weight, quintessentially elegant style of Lafite with notes of lead pencil shavings/graphite along with black currants, plums, and crushed rocks/mineral. Wonderfully pure, dense, with a deep ruby/purple color and loads of fruit, definition, and a long finish, this is a brilliant, elegant Lafite Rothschild that builds incrementally in the mouth and has more power and density than it initially seems. (94 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #158, Apr. 2005) Estimate: $6,000-$8,000 Starting Bid: $4, Chateau Latour nl, The wine of the vintage? There are only 10,000 cases of this extraordinarily rich, dense 2002 that is as powerful as the 2003 (even the alcohol levels are nearly the same, 12.85%). It is dark ruby/purple to the rim, with notes of English walnuts, crushed rocks, black currants, and forest floor, dense, full-bodied, and opulent, yet classic with spectacular aromatics, marvelous purity, and a full-bodied finish that lasts just over 50+ seconds. (96 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #158, Apr. 2005) Estimate: $4,250-$5,500 Starting Bid: $3, Chateau Margaux 2002 Margaux banded Performing better from bottle than at any time in cask (which of course is the objective of great winemaking, isn t it?), this wine reveals a dense ruby/purple color in a style somewhat reminiscent of the 1988 but with more power, concentration, and volume. 2005) Estimate: $3,500-$4,500 Starting Bid: $2, Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2002 Dense purple to the rim, this wine exhibits the classic cassis aroma that is so characteristic of Mouton. Medium to full-bodied, tannic, powerful, and cut somewhat from the 1988 mold, this is a backward, chewy, well-endowed Mouton-Rothschild that will require considerable patience from those who purchase it. (93 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #158, Apr. 2005) Estimate: $3,500-$4,500 Starting Bid: $2, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 The 2001 is just entering a young adolescent stage of development, exhibiting extraordinary nuances such as sweet, loamy soil and earthy minerality intermixed with some background smoke, black currant liqueur, plum, Asian spice and new saddle leather. Full-bodied, it possesses great intensity, with stunning flavors that are viscous enough to coat the mouth, but never become heavy or overbearing. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #195, June 2011) Estimate: $850-$1,200 Starting Bid: $ Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 The extraordinary Harlan Estate, which I awarded 100 points seven years ago, offers no justifiable reason to doubt its perfect score. It is still a baby, with an inky purple color and notes of smoky camphor intermixed with creme de cassis, Asian soy and a hint of cedar beginning to emerge as well as some espresso and subtle damp forest floor notes. The wine has awesome intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel, a skyscraper-like texture, and a finish that goes on for close to a minute. (100 pts. 43 234 Schrader Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer, To-Kalon Vineyard Bottle (2) 2002 Estimate: $850-$1,200 Starting Bid: $ Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 Hillside Select In contrast to the more linear, structured, but massive 2001, the 2002 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is pure fruitbomb material, but stunningly proportioned, beautifully pure, with notes of melted chocolate, blackcurrant jam, sweet black cherries, licorice, camphor and charcoal. Very full-bodied, like the 2001, but much more lavishly fruited, it is more accessible and hedonistically, as well as intellectually, satisfying. If the 2001 is the long-distance runner, this comes across more like a middledistancer. It had performed fabulously well since it was released by the winery, and even though it s still an adolescent in terms of its evolution, this wine is a head-turner in wine tastings, and a spectacular effort from Napa. Drink now or drink in years. (100 pts. 44 246 Penfold s Grange 1995 Bottle (3) An impressive Grange that may ultimately prove to be underrated, like many wines from this vintage, the 1995, a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a saturated plum/ purple color and a sweet blackberry liqueur nose intermixed with cassis, licorice, and new oak. The wine is textured, jammy, fullbodied, with impressive levels of extract, glycerin, and black fruit flavors. It is long, ripe, with unobtrusive acidity and tannin. (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, Feb. 2002) Estimate: $800-$1, Penfold s Grange 1996 Bottle (3) Deep garnet colored, 1996 Grange is scented with stewed plums, warm cherries and mince meat with hints of Ceylon tea, black olives and Chinese five spice. Medium-full bodied and with a generous amount of flesh on the palate, it gives very crisp acid and a medium-firm level of grainy tannins, finishing long. The layered complexity of this wine is just beginning to emerge, promising better things to come. (95 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, In Asia, Jan. 2012) Estimate: $800-$1,100 GRANGE THROUGH THE AGES Initially made in secret by the famed Penfold s winemaker, Max Schubert, Grange is now rightly considered Australia s First Growth and one of the world s greatest wines. Made primarily of Shiraz with a small percentage of Cabernet, Grange is modeled on Bordeaux and was first made to rival the best wines of France in quality and longevity. The recipient of numerous 100-point scores, Grange is the ultimate negotiator at any wine dinner. Its robust character appeals to the Cult Cabernet lover, while the ageing potential beats out many a Bordeaux. Burgundy and Barolo lovers can appreciate the complexity and kaleidoscopic aromatics. Unlike many older wines, it consistently performs well right out of the bottle. The wines below were purchased on or near release and stored in professional wine storage in Southern California under precise temperature and humidity control. 248 Chateau Haut Brion 1982 Pessac-Leognan 4cm, lbsl, ssos I know Jean Delmas, whom I respect as one of the world s greatest wine producers, has always thought the 1982 Haut Brion was similar to the 1959 Complex aromatics of scorched earth, smoked herbs, and sweet red and black currants are followed by a full-bodied, silky-textured wine the 1982 remains a superb Haut Brion. 46 250 Chateau Calon Segur 1995 St. Estephe 2bn, 4lbsl, 5nl, As I have said many times since I first tasted this wine, the 1995 Calon-Segur is one of the great sleepers of the vintage (I bought the wine as a future for a mere $250 a case). The wine has closed down completely since bottling, but it is a sensational effort that may ultimately merit an even higher score. The wine is opaque purple-colored. With coaxing, the tight aromatics reveal some weedy cassis intertwined with truffles, chocolate, and beef blood-like aromas. On the palate, there is an element of surmaturite (1995 was an extremely late harvest at Calon-Segur), fabulous density and purity, and a boatload of tannin. This deep, broodingly backward, classic Bordeaux will require a decade of cellaring. (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #115, Feb. 1998) Estimate: $1,000-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Ornellaia 1998 Tenuta dell Ornellaia 2nl, 6lwrl Made in a relatively structured style for the normally succulent Ornellaia, the dense saturated ruby/purple-colored 1998 offers up aromas of pain grille, spice, smoke, black fruits, and graphite. Full-bodied, concentrated, exceptionally pure, and long, it will be at its finest between Very impressive, but it requires patience. (93 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #137, Oct. 2001) Estimate: $800-$1, Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 1991 Special Selection 2bn, 2ts, 5lwrl, 2ssos Bottle (5) Healthy dark color, wonderful youthful vitality. Rich mocha, chocolate, black cherry and spice flavors, elegant and polished, with softening tannins and dusty, cedary oak adding dimension. Excellent balance. (94 pts. James Laube, Wine Spectator, 2002) Estimate: $550-$750 Starting Bid: $ Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 Special Selection ssos Imperial (1) Current vintages of the luxury cuvee, the Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection, are bottled much earlier than in the past and they remain one of Napa s most classic Cabernets. The 2003 s opaque purple color suggests a wine much younger than ten years of age. Copious amounts of creme de cassis, graphite, spice box and a whiff of new saddle leather result in a classic, authoritative, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with no hard edges. This big, mouthfilling, textured, multidimensional Cabernet still tastes like an adolescent, and is capable of lasting another years. Some tannins are present, but their sweetness along with the wine s voluptuous character are irresistible. (96 pts. Already complex as well as formidably endowed, with exceptional intensity, purity, power, and a 60+ second finish, this Barossa Valley legend should age for two decades. (93 pts. Cherry liqueur intermixed with cranberry and cassis presented in a seductive, fullbodied, very soft, forward style is truly not the classic Grange in the sense of having huge structure and massive concentration, but this wine is loaded, very corpulent, and fleshy. The wine, a blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, shows some toasty oak mixed with notes of root vegetables, damp earth, blackberry liqueur, prune, and licorice. The wine is dense, full-bodied, not terribly complex in the mouth, but layered and rich. I would not be surprised to see the rating on this wine improve as this youthful Grange continues to evolve. 48 CABERNET FROM AROUND THE WORLD The following wines come to us from a repeat consignor in Central California. This is just a piece of a larger collection, which was predominantly purchased on release and promptly stored in a beautiful home cellar with temperature and humidity control. As happens to all of us, at some point he decided that he needed to thin the collection a bit to make room for newer bottles. 268 Chateau Haut Brion 1989 Pessac-Leognan 1nl, 1wisl, 1hscl Bottle (2)...the 1989 Haut-Brion is a seamless, majestic classic, and a tribute to this phenomenal terroir and its singular characteristics. The wine still has a very thick, viscous-looking ruby/purple color, a spectacular, young but awesome smorgasbord of aromas ranging from scorched earth, liquid minerals, graphite, blackberry and black currant jam to toast, licorice, and spice box. The levels of fruit, extract, and glycerin in this viscous, full-bodied, lowacid wine are awe-inspiring. The brilliant symmetry of the wine, extraordinary purity, and seamlessness are the hallmarks of a modern-day legend. (100 pts. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book 4th Ed., Jan. 2003) Estimate: $2,600-$3,500 Starting Bid: $2, Chateau Haut Brion 1996 Pessac-Leognan 3scl Bottle (3) While in some vintages La Mission Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion can be close in quality, that is not the case in this vintage. The 1996 Haut-Brion, a blend of 50% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc is clearly on a higher plane than the La Mission. There is something much more expansive and complete on the nose: greater depth of fruit, more harmonious with scents of underbrush, tar, black olive and this bottle perhaps less feral than I have noticed on previous examples. The palate is very well balanced with dark cherries, sous-bois and cedar. This is one vintage where I think the Cabernet Franc plays an important role and lends more complexity. This is a 1996 that has retained and built upon beguiling fleshiness and it will continue to evolve with style and panache. (95 pts. Neal Martin, Wine Advocate #227, Oct. 2016) Estimate: $950-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1989 bn, lscl Subtle, yet rich and decadent, offering meat, sweet berry and fresh leather on the nose. Full and very soft, with velvety tannins and a long, fruity finish. This has so much ripe fruit. Reserved and firm, this is turning to a very fine and shy Lafite. (93 pts. It has an attractive, slightly leafy bouquet armed with cedar and pencil lead. There is less fruit concentration than I expected, resolutely classic, slightly austere Bordeaux. The palate follows suit. What it lacks in substance it compensates with in balance and personality. This is an understated Mouton-Rothschild that is probably at its peak, although I envisage this offering another two decades of pleasure. (93 pts. 50 276 Heitz Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Martha s Vineyard 4nl Bottle (5) This was a spectacular performance from this hallowed vineyard as well as one of Napa Valley s great historic terroirs. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals a still youthful personality and will benefit from another 5-7 years of bottle age. An opaque purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, flowers and background earth as well as spice. The old eucalyptus-filled aromatics of a young Martha s Vineyard are nowhere to be found as the 2001 is dominated by fruit and earth. Full-bodied and powerful with superb integration of wood, tannin, acidity and alcohol, this large-scaled red is capable of three or more decades of cellaring. It is unquestionably a youthful classic, but it requires patience from its owners. (95+ pts. With more graphite, blueberry and lilac notes, sweet tannin, medium to full body, and an elegant, gracious feel, it is more restrained than previous examples but has no shortage of richness and concentration. It looks to be a beauty in a Bordeaux style, with sweet tannins but loads of fruit unmistakably California but French in structure. (93 pts. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet toasty oak along with creme de cassis, licorice, and resin-like aromas. Medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, and elegant with soft tannin as well as a forward style (surprising in view of winemaker Paul Draper s typical style), I would not be surprised to see it firm up considerably in the bottle, and last for years. (90 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #150, Dec. 2003) Estimate: $900-$1,200 Starting Bid: $ Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Monte Bello Bottle (4) At age 10, it is still an infant in terms of development, and I would not be surprised to see this 2001 last 40 years. A dense ruby/ purple color is accompanied by extravagant, generous aromas of pen ink, lead pencil shavings, spice box and black fruits. The wine is full-bodied and silky textured, but secondary nuances have not yet begun to develop as it is still very primary, tasting more like a 3-4 year old Monte Bello than one that is ten years of age. Nevertheless, it reveals spectacular concentration, a voluptuous texture, a rare opulence for a Ridge Monte Bello, and an incredible finish. The upside is enormous and this cuvee may prove somewhat atypical due to the huge percentage of Merlot in the final blend and the higher than normal alcohol. But make no mistake about this Monte Bello it is a great wine. (99 pts. The tannins are still noticeable in this full-bodied 2003, but seem reasonably well-integrated. Forget this wine for another decade and drink it over the following 30+ years. (94+ pts. These wines are part of a much larger collection that were purchased on release and stored in a temperature and humidity controlled home cellar. 74 HEITZ MARTHA S This bottle comes to us from a collector with interests in many varying categories of items. Simply put, this is one of the prettiest bottles of 1974 Martha s Vineyard that we have seen in some time; anyone looking to try a stunning example of this legendary wine should look no further. The spectacular, huge, Mouton-Rothschild-like nose of mint, cassis, lead pencil, and toast is remarkably youthful. Staggeringly concentrated, this full-bodied, super-rich wine possesses moderate tannin, fresh, lively acidity, and a blockbuster, rich, fleshy finish. This is a monumental effort! (98 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #94, Aug. 1994) Estimate: $1,300-$1,700 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1989 Pessac-Leognan lbsl, tl This is a profound bottle of La Mission-Haut-Brion with a deep ruby/purple color and a gorgeous nose of espresso, tar, tobacco, mineral, and blackberry, blueberry, and black currant fruit. The extraordinary smorgasbord of aromatics is matched by a fullbodied, viscous, opulent style of wine with sweet, jammy fruit yet enough tannin and acidity to provide uplift and definition. Still somewhat of an adolescent in terms of its development, and far less evolved than its gorgeous sibling, the 1990, this is a prodigious, multi-dimensional wine that is a modern-day legend. (100 pts. The tannins are big, ripe and are completely buffered by the sap with length that is simply phenomenal. This remains completely primary in character and seems not to have budged at all since it was bottled. A genuinely great vintage for La Tâche that is softer in the mouth than the 96 Grands Ech and this should improve for another decade and last for 50 years. Very classy juice. (96 pts. This is a repeat consignor who has worked with us three times in as many auctions and our bidders have told us repeatedly that the wines have showed perfectly. Bid with confidence. 290 Barolo 2001 Le Vigne, L. Sandrone Luciano Sandrone s 2001 Barolo Le Vigne is fresh, vibrant and totally impeccable. Flowers, mint, minerals and juicy red berries are some of the many nuances that come to life in the 2001 Le Vigne. The wine gains volume and shape with time in the glass. Seemingly endless layers of fruit flesh out on the mid-palate and finish. Hints of leather, spices, licorice and flowers add further complexity on the close. This is a fabulous showing from Luciano Sandrone. Although Sandrone s Cannubi Boschis gets most of the attention, the reality is that in many vintages Le Vigne is very much its equal. The ability to blend fruit from several parcels, an approach rarely used today, has plenty of merits. (96 pts. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate #200, Apr. 2012) Estimate: $400-$500 Starting Bid: $ Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1991 This is a profoundly great wine. It came across in a blind tasting as one of the most remarkable wines there, with most tasters mistaking it for a first-growth Medoc. The wine revealed an opaque purple color, a fabulously complex, sweet nose of minerals, fruitcake, cedar, toasty new oak, and pure blackcurrant fruit. Although huge in the mouth, the wine is remarkably wellbalanced, with its high tannin level well-concealed by copious quantities of sweet ripe fruit, as well as huge amounts of glycerin and extract. I have consistently rated the 1991 Harlan Estate in the mid to upper nineties, but in this blind tasting with so many high quality wines, it was a big-time winner. (98 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, Feb. 1997) Estimate: $3,500-$4,500 Starting Bid: $2, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1992 Magnum (3) The newest release, the 1992, offers a dense purple color, and a splendid sweet nose of minerals, blackcurrants, toast, and spice. Opulent and rich, with full body, and well-integrated sweet tannin, this expansive yet graceful wine possesses layers of flavor that caress the palate. The wine is accessible, yet still youthful and unformed. It should drink well for 20+ years. Dazzling wines! (96 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #108, Dec. 1996) Estimate: $2,600-$3,500 Starting Bid: $2, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1995 The 1995 Proprietary Red Wine is almost as perfect as the It has gotten even better in the bottle, and remains one of the most remarkable young Cabernet Sauvignons I have tasted. The wine, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, was aged in 100% new oak, which adds subtle pain grille/toasty scents. This opaque purple-colored Cabernet offers up a nose of smoke, coffee beans, black and blue fruits, minerals, and roasted herbs. It is extremely full-bodied, with spectacular purity, exquisite equilibrium, and a seamless personality with everything in total harmony. The finish lasts for more than 40 seconds. This extravagantly rich, profoundly complex 1995 will give its 1994 sibling a run for its money. (99 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #120, Dec. 1998) Estimate: $3,250-$4,250 Starting Bid: $2, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1996 The opaque purple-colored 1996 Harlan Estate reveals extraordinary intensity, a spicy, black currant, tobacco, cedar, and fruit cake-scented bouquet, full body, a texture oozing with glycerin and concentrated fruit, and moderate tannin in the blockbuster finish. It is one of the most concentrated and complete red wines one could hope to taste. (98 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #126, Jan. 2000) Estimate: $3,250-$4,250 Starting Bid: $2, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1998 Bottle (3) The 1998, which is a candidate for the Wine of the Vintage, was produced from yields of 0.9 tons per acre. There are only 1,100 cases, and it is the first Harlan Estate to be composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A spectacular achievement, it boasts an opaque plum/purple color as well as a sumptuous nose of espresso, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, tobacco, licorice, Asian spice, and roasted meat smells. In the mouth, it is seamless, full-bodied, with an unctuous texture, gorgeously sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of concentration. This is a tour de force in winemaking. It is hard to believe that a wine such as this has emerged from (95 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #132, Dec. 2000) Estimate: $1,200-$1,500 Starting Bid: $ Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1999 Bottle (3) The 1999 Harlan Estate (1,700 cases) reveals moderately intense aromatics of sweet vanilla, menthol, espresso, chocolate, and cassis. The wine is medium to full-bodied, suave, and elegant. It is more restrained and not as intense as previous vintages, reflecting 1999 s cool growing season. Nevertheless, this is still an outstanding wine. The finish is long, elegant, and Bordeaux-like. (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #142, Aug. 2002) Estimate: $1,200-$1,500 Starting Bid: $ To view full descriptions, enlargeable images and bid online, visit HA.com/5367

297 Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 A Graves-like perfume of roasted coffee, scorched earth, black currants, cedar, and a hint of menthol emerge from this dense dark ruby/purple-colored Lighter than normal, but medium to full-bodied and elegant, with soft tannin as well as a silky, precocious personality and texture... (91 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #150, Dec. 2003) Estimate: $2,400-$3,250 Starting Bid: $1, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 Magnum (1) Estimate: $650-$850 Starting Bid: $ Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 The bottled 2003 Harlan Estate is as good or even better than I had hoped. With a dark ruby/purple color, silky tannin, and abundant quantities of licorice, graphite, chocolate, espresso, black currant, truffle, and earthy characteristics, it comes across like a hypothetical blend of a top-notch and Graves. (95 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #168, Dec. 2006) Estimate: $2,400-$3,250 Starting Bid: $1, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 The 2004 Harlan Estate is probably the most precocious and accessible Harlan Estate that this perfectionist team has made. Already compelling, the wine has notes of roasted coffee, charcoal, blackberry, spring flowers, and some background sweet, toasty notes. Dense, fleshy, exuberant, even flamboyant by the standards of Bill Harlan, this wine exhibits no jaggedness or rough edges, has relatively high tannins, but they melt away on the palate. (98 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #174, Dec. 2007) Estimate: $2,600-$3,500 Starting Bid: $2, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 The 2005 is incredibly youthful at age ten, although certainly drinkable. And who wouldn t consume it if they had the opportunity? It will benefit from another 5-10 years of cellaring and certainly has 30 or more years left in its evolutionary curve. Gorgeous, and tasting akin to a hypothetical blended with a great Pessac-Léognan from Bordeaux comes to mind because of the smoky, subtle barbecue notes, fruitcake, forest floor, graphite and minerality. The wine has stunning fruit and a full-bodied, powerful richness, yet is still nimble on its feet. This is a classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon from an absolutely magnificent hillside vineyard in the Mayacamas Mountains overlooking the Oakville corridor on the valley floor. This opaque, garnet/purple wine is another tour de force and, once again, proves that Harlan Estate is not only one of the greatest wines of California, but of the world. (98+ pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #219, June 2015) Estimate: $2,800-$3,750 Starting Bid: $2, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 The 2006 Harlan Estate has turned out better than I originally predicted. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by classic aromas of creme de cassis, melted licorice, smoked meats, burning embers, and graphite. It has thrown off some of the tannic clout it displayed last year, revealing great balance. (96 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #186, Dec. 2009) Estimate: $2,400-$3,250 Starting Bid: $1, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 Magnum (1) Estimate: $750-$ Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Espresso, mocha, dark red berries, rose petals and spices are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2008 Harlan Estate. The wine fleshes out beautifully in the glass as it shows off its class and true pedigree. This is a decidedly ripe, forward vintage, but in exchange the wine will drink well right out of the gate. (96 pts. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate #198, Dec. 2011) Estimate: $2,600-$3,500 Starting Bid: $2, To view full descriptions, enlargeable images and bid online, visit HA.com/5367

305 Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 The 2009 Proprietary Blend Harlan Estate is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Cloves, dark plums, cherries, smoke and graphite add richness and resonance to this powerful, incisive wine. Juicy and exuberant, the 2009 has always had a certain raciness that is impossible to resist. Layers of fruit continue to build to the enveloping, sensual finish. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this hugely delicious wine. (97 pts. Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate #204, Dec. 2012) Estimate: $2,600-$3,500 Starting Bid: $2, Harlan Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 More dense, tannic, complex and fuller-bodied than Harlan s 2011 The Maiden is the 2011 Harlan Estate. Its plum/purple color is followed by a sweet perfume of camphor, blackcurrants, lead pencil shavings, Christmas fruitcake and hints of forest floor and underbrush. Deep, round and generous with silky tannins and a forward, evolved style, this beauty should drink well for years. (93 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #215, Oct. 2014) Estimate: $2,000-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1, Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Monte Bello Imperial (1) A retaste of the flagship wine, the 2007 Monte Bello (a blend from this famous estate of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc) reveals a dense ruby/ purple wine with a floral, blueberry, and earthy cassis nose and elegant mid-weight flavors with impressive purity and classicism. There is good acidity, firm tannin, and modest alcohol (13.1%). This is not the most concentrated or powerful Monte Bello, but one built on finesse and elegance. (92+ pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #193, Feb. 2011) Estimate: $1,000-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Kosta Browne Pinot Noir 2009 Gap s Crown Double-Magnum (1) 2009 Sonoma Coast Double-Magnum (1) Estimate: $550-$750 Starting Bid: $ Kosta Browne Pinot Noir 2009 Sonoma Coast 5-Liter (1) Ripe and deeply flavored, concentrated and well-structured, this full-bodied red offers a complex mix of black cherry, wild berry and raspberry fruit that s pure and persistent, ending with a pebbly note and firm tannins. Ranked #1 on Top 100 of (95 pts. James Laube, Wine Spectator, Aug. 2011) Estimate: $550-$750 Starting Bid: $ Marcassin Pinot Noir 2010 Marcassin Vineyard 3nl The 2010 Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard is a slightly tighter style of Pinot Noir, and lighter than the There is more acidity showing through, the fruit offering up various red and black fruits from pomegranate to plum to cassis, dark sweet cherries as well as foresty underbrush notes. (95 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #220, Aug. 2015) Estimate: $1,800-$2,400 Starting Bid: $1, Marcassin Pinot Noir 2011 Marcassin Vineyard Bottle (8) The 2011 Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard has sweet berry fruit, roasted herbs, incense, a touch of background wood spice and foresty notes all present in this medium-bodied, slightly lighter style of Pinot Noir from Marcassin. This was a challenging vintage, but the wines turned out outstanding, and very Burgundian. The alcohol is 13.9%, which is one of their lowest sugar levels. The wine presents a very attractive, moderately intense perfume, good acidity and excellent precision. (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #220, Aug. 2015) Estimate: $1,000-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Marcassin Pinot Noir 2009 Three Sisters 2010 Three Sisters 1nl Bottle (2) 2010 Blue Slide Ridge Bottle (2) Estimate: $600-$800 Starting Bid: $ Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2007 Magnum (1) 2009 Magnum (4) Estimate: $700-$900 Starting Bid: $550 Auction #5367 Friday, September 14, :00 PM PT 61

THIRTY VINTAGES OF OPUS The following bottles come to us from a wonderful cellar in America s Heartland. They were all originally purchased directly from the mailing list or from trusted retailers on release and then stored in an underground, temperature controlled home cellar. Prior to shipping for this sale, most of the wines had never even been removed from their wooden cases. 314 Chateau Petrus 1986 Pomerol The 1986 displays a monolithic character in its tea, herb, and dusty berry aromas. Dense and powerful with considerable tannin, this is an admirably concentrated, medium to full-bodied wine. (89 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #88, Aug. 1993) Estimate: $1,300-$1,700 Starting Bid: $1, Chateau Haut Brion 1993 Pessac-Leognan 1lscl Bottle (2) The color is a surprisingly saturated deep plum/ruby. Some sweet berry fruit intermixed with menthol, graphite, damp earth, and a hint of mushroom emerges in this medium-bodied, very elegant Haut Brion that is still firmly structured but has sweet tannin and surprising length and ripeness. (90 pts. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book 4th Ed., Jan. 2003) 316 Chateau Mouton Rothschild with Balthus label The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage such as 1990 or 1989, but there is more richness of fruit, a sweet, ripe, pureness to the wine, as well as medium body and outstanding balance. (90 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #109, Feb. 1997) Estimate: $1,900-$2,600 Starting Bid: $1, Opus One vhs, 5hcc, Bottle (5) Estimate: $1,100-$1,400 Starting Bid: $ Opus One hcc, This is an impressive effort from Opus One. (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #114, Dec. 1997) Estimate: $1,400-$1,800 Starting Bid: $1, Opus One bn, 5hcc, Bottle (5) It exhibits a healthy dark ruby color with no signs of age. The nose has not budged much from when it was first bottled. The delicate yet attractive fragrance of vanilla, herbs, cassis, and spices is followed by a sculptured, fruity, medium to full-bodied wine with crisp acidity, moderate tannin, and good depth. (88 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #98, Apr. 1995) Estimate: $1,100-$1,400 Starting Bid: $ Opus One vhs, 2hs, 5hcc, Bottle (5) Deep brick colour. Appealingly evolved nose of leather, game, tobacco, espresso, stewed prunes, bacon and tea. The palate still provides a good amount of elegant fruit that builds in the mouth. Light to medium level of silky tannins remain with medium to high acidity to provide freshness. Long finish. (91 pts. Lisa Perrotti- Brown, In Asia, July 2009) Estimate: $1,000-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Opus One ts, 2vhs, 2hs, 6hcc, 1 exposed cork, Deep garnet-brick. Mature Cabernet notes of warm cassis, dried herbs, mushrooms, black pepper and sweaty saddles. The medium to full bodied palate provides plenty of gamey, dried berry fruit with a medium level of silky tannins and medium to high acidity. Great balance. Long finish. (93 pts. Lisa Perrotti- Brown, In Asia, July 2009) Estimate: $1,400-$1,800 Starting Bid: $1, Opus One bn, 6cc, Medium to deep garnet-brick colour. Savoury/earthy notes of soy, hung meat, sweaty leather, tobacco, truffle, a suggestion of cardamom and a slight medicinal/menthol character. The palate gives a high level of acidity with a medium level of silky tannins and a good concentration of spicy, savoury fruit. Long finish. (91 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, In Asia, July 2009) Estimate: $1,200-$1,500 Starting Bid: $ To view full descriptions, enlargeable images and bid online, visit HA.com/5367

323 Opus One wisl, 2sos, Bottle (5) Estimate: $1,000-$1,300 Starting Bid: $ Opus One 1990 In a blind tasting, this wine did not fool many tasters when served blind. It was quickly identified as a California wine despite the fact that it is made in a Bordeaux-like style. The wine performed well, exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color, a lead pencil, grapy, spicy oak-scented nose, medium body, a tight, more compact texture than the Bordeaux, as well as more elevated and obvious new oak. Rich and ripe, as well as graceful, it stood out as having higher acidity than the Bordeaux. Although soft enough to be drunk, the 1990 Opus One is capable of lasting 15 or more years. (90 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, Feb. 1997) Estimate: $1,500-$2,000 Starting Bid: $1, Opus One 1992 The 1992 Opus One, a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Merlot, offers a beautiful dark ruby/ purple color, a big, spicy nose of cassis, lead pencil, and smoky oak, round, full-bodied, broad, fat flavors crammed with black fruits, soft tannin, low acidity, and a fleshy, full-bodied finish. (92 pts. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #99, June 1995) Estimate: $1,400-$1,800 Starting Bid: $1, Opus One 1993 Aromatically complex, with enticing floral, perfumed fruit and spice, cedar and cigar box scents. Delivers a rich, complex core of earthy currant, mocha, exotic spice and fresh leather flavors. Tannins are well-integrated, with a long, vibrant, pleasantly earthy aftertaste. (92 pts. James Laube, Wine Spectator, Nov. 2003) Estimate: $1,500-$2,000 Starting Bid: $1, Opus One 1995 Medium brick colour. Intense nose of dried blackberries and cherries laced with complex aromas of coffee grounds, tobacco leaf, cumin and soy. Nice concentration of mature berry and spice fruit balanced by medium to firm, slightly chewy tannins and medium to high acidity. A more structured style of Opus. Very long finish. (93 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, In Asia, July 2009) Estimate: $1,300-$1,700 Starting Bid: $1, Opus One ltl, 2 Bottle (11) Estimate: $2,600-$3,500 Starting Bid: $2, Opus One A rich, decidedly earthy style of Opus, showing currant, anise, black cherry, mineral, leather and sage flavors that are focused and complex. (94 pts. James Laube, Wine Spectator, Nov. 2000) Estimate: $3,000-$4,000 Starting Bid: $2, Opus One 1998 Elegant, polished, supple and complex, with pretty currant, cedar, anise, sage and tar notes. Turns firmly tannic. (88 pts. James Laube, Wine Spectator, Oct. 2001) Estimate: $1,400-$1,800 Starting Bid: $1, Opus One 1999 An exquisite, complex, stylish wine, wearing a cloak of earthy, leathery tannins around flavors of mineral, currant, earth and blackberry. Gains intensity and shows its depth and concentration on the finish, which is long and detailed. (93 pts. James Laube, Wine Spectator, Oct. 2002) Estimate: $1,300-$1,700 Starting Bid: $1, Opus One 2000 Firm and structured, with spicy currant, herb, dill and berry, picking up a cedary lead pencil edge. Finishes with a firm, rich core of flavors and tight tannins. (89 pts. James Laube, Wine Spectator, Nov. 2003) Estimate: $1,200-$1,500 Starting Bid: $ Opus One the 2001 Opus One reveals a classic, French-like style with notes of cedar wood, melted licorice, black currants, roasted herbs and tobacco leaf. (90 pts. Fullbodied, opulent and young, it offers accessibility as well as silky tannins. A thoroughly complete wine that is pure and rich, it tastes like a hypothetical blend of a great Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon married to a Bordeaux. Bravo! (94 pts.
