An enticing blend of red berries, butter and toast on the nose; this settled down to an earthy, smoky character that reminded me of Batard-Montrachet. Full and rich, with flavors of musky yellow plum and ripe pear accented by crisp mineral notes. Really long and vibrant on the building finish. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Rating KRUG BRUT A very youthful 95. Delicate. Intense aromas of ginger, citrus, candied berry and multigrain bread turn to honey, roasted almonds and graphite on the palate. It s all underscored by a precise structure and creamy texture. Its structure keeps it persistent through the long finish. A picture of precision and intensity. Drink now through ,700 cases imported. Wine Spectator Rating "98" 130 KRUG, GRAND CUVEE...MULTI Super texture, like velvet, offers the perfect backdrop for a kaleidoscope of flavors?coconut, ginger, vanilla, berries and tobacco. Beautifully integrated, with a firm underpinning of acidity keeping it all focused and fresh. Terrific length. Drink now through Wine Spectator Rating LOUIS ROEDERER, CRISTAL "The 2004 Brut Cristal has put on quite a bit of weight since I first tasted it earlier this year. It is a powerful, structured Cristal layered with considerable fruit. Chardonnay seems to play the leading role in 2004, at least today. Cristal is often accessible young, but that is far from the case here. This is a serious, painfully young Cristal that will require considerable patience. Readers who are willing to spend some time with the wine today will find a super-impressive, complete Cristal. The 2004 Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. This is Lot L033331E100008, disgorged January, Anticipated maturity: Wine Advocate Rating PERRIER-JOUET, FLEUR DE CHAMPAGNE BRUT Hints of burnt sugar and toffee accent this bright Champagne, along with notes of apple pie, breaddough,cream and candied lemon peel. There's a fine balance between the wine's finesse and its livelycharacter, with a long, smoke-tinged finish. Better than previously reviewed. Bold and complex, exhibiting roasted elements of toasted bread, nuts and coffee, along with dried fuit and citrus nuances. The structure is firm and fresh, with a superlong finish evoking walnuts. Brisk, pinot-like aromas of raspberry, strawberry, smoke, toast and honeysuckle. Bright and frothy in the mouth, with vibrant, firm-edged red berry flavors that call to mind a Russian River Valley pinot noir. A real fruit bomb, but dry and brisk on the back end. Has a copper color, toasty aromas, firm texture and subtle fruit and spice flavors that linger on the finish. The Wine Spectator Rating NICOLAS FEUILLATTE BRUT ROSE...N V A distinctive rosé Champagne that smells like potpourri or Christmas punch with its cinnamon and clove accents. There s depth and intensity to the berry and whole-grain bread notes, matched to a raw silk texture and vibrant structure. Excellent length. Wine Spectator Rating VEUVE CLICQUOT ROSE... N.V Drawing on the success of the yellow label, the pink twist is sure to attract trendy drinkers. With a fine mousse and dark salmon hue, this Champagne greets you with raspberry and strawberry aromas. What follows is deep, intense and strong all characteristically Veuve. The texture is rich and creamy, then the acidity sweepsit up into a long finish, the Champagne flavors are clear as a bell. A super non-vintage brut. N.V This J non-vintage Brut gracefully opens up with crisp lemon peel, honeysuckle and delicate yeast aromas. Upon entry, these notes follow through to a mix of Fuji apple and grapefruit interlaced with toast, caramel and almond flavors on the mid-palate. This wine, which spent three years on its lees, is rich, fresh, medium-bodied, and long in the mouth, with tiny pinpoint bubbles and a lot of frothiness. This is a brilliant wine from winemaker Mattia Bezzola. The reference point for brilliantly pure, elegant, Italian sparkling wine, this offering can stand up to the finest Champagnes." N.V The non-vintage, light-bodied Prosecco di Valdobiaddene Rustico offers gorgeously elegant, fresh, lively fruit, notes of bread dough and citrus, and persistent effervescence. It is almost impossible to believe this low-priced wine is so good. Wine Advocate Rating PROSECCO EXTRA DRY, LA MARCA, VENETO... N.V A delicate, well-balanced Prosecco, showing a good blend of baked apple, sour lemon and grapefruit, with a lightly creamy mineral texture on the palate. This just floats on for a while. Wine Spectator Rating DOMAINE DROUHIN, ARTHUR ARTHUR, DUNDEE HILLS, OREGON Always a joy to drink, the latest vintage of DDO s Arthur combines richness and elegance in a seamless and fascinating whole. Cucumber and melon, apple and pear fruit is the base, which expands into wet stone and mineral, then butter cookie. It s a one-wine seminar in how to make great Chardonnay, expressing the acid-driven elegance of Burgundy with some of the lushness of New World grapes. Tasted even better on the second day. 10 AMERICAN WHITE WINES CHARDONNAY 220 FISHER,, MOUNTAIN ESTATE TE VINYARD, SONOMA COUNTY The 2007 Chardonnay, Mountain Estate Vineyard displays fresh white currant, quince, nectarine, orange blossom, and white peach aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied with admirable fruit purity and good acidity, this fresh, lively, substantial Chardonnay is both powerful and elegant. Wine Advocate Rating FERRARI-CARANO CARANO,, ALEXANDER VALLEY ALLEY Over 60 individual Chardonnay lots are either whole-cluster pressed or gently de-stemmed, crushed, pressed, and then cold settled for two days in stainless steel tanks before moving to barrels. Aged separately in French oak, the wines complete 85 percent malolactic fermentation and are sur lie aged and stirred every two weeks for ten months. Winemaker s Tasting Notes 202 FOLEY,, RANCHO SANTA A ROSA, SANTA A RITA A HILLS Beautiful and young, rewarding in every aspect. It shows bright, ripe Meyer lemon marmalade, apricot preserve, nectarine butter and guava flavors, with an exotic array of tropical spices and an elaborate coating of caramelized, vanilla-infused oak. It s also clean in citrusy acids. A bit tight now, so decant, and don t serve too cold. Wine Enthusiast Rating GRGICH HILLS, NAPA A VALLEY ALLEY Yellow-gold hue. Fresh peach, grapefruit and clove aromas. Tight and somewhat compact with acidic peach, new oak and mineral flavors. Dry, youthful close with lingering notes of clove and toasted oak. Wine News Rating JORDAN, RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY Bright, straw-green colored hue. The clean freshness of the nose opens up with vivid fruit aromas of green apples, pears and peach, and a touch of quince and kiwi.the palate echoes the bright fruit bouquet braced by crisp acidity and a lingering minerality. The finish brings the fruit, balance and understated elegance of this winefull circle. Winemaker s Tasting Notes 230 KENDALL JACKSON VINTNER S RESERVE, CALIFORNIA Some serious vineyards fruit is included in this wine, which no doubt explains the big, tropical fruit -scented nose, fine acidity, and medium to full-bodied flavors. Despite the fact that this cuvee sees 100% barrel fermentation with full malolactic, there is little evidence of oak. The wine is aged eight months, on its lees, in one-third French oak. It is an amazing Chardonnay for the price." Wine Advocate Rating KISTLER, DUTTON RANCH, RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY The 2006 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch is structured and tannic, with more acidity, and a leaner, more backward personality than the Durell Vineyard, with a chalky character. Medium to full-bodied, pure and fresh with the wood pushed to the background, this dry, classy white should be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years. Wine Advocate Rating LEWIS, NAPA A VALLEY ALLEY Combines ripe, rich fruit with a sense of elegance and finesse, offering a depth of fruit, with spice, pear, apple, honeydew melon and toasty, cedary oak. Full-bodied, intense and concentrated, ending with a long, full finish. Drink now through 2016 Wine Spectator Rating MER SOLEIL, CENTRAL COAST The wine is beautifully balanced with honeyed ripe apple aromas and flavors, spicy notes, and the subtle texture of barrel fermentation. There are hints of ripe pear and honey in the flavors, and the wine finishes with length, balance, and great texture. If you re bored with over-oaked Chardonnays, Mer Soleil is the way to go. California Grapevine Rating NEWTON, UNFILTERED TERED, NAPA A COUNTY Very dry, a lean, austere Chardonnay currently marked by aloof flavors of lemons, limes and oak. Yet there s something going on. As the wine warms in the glass it becomes richer, showing hidden pineapple tart, macadamia and crème brûlée. Firm, minerally acidity is there throughout, making for a mouthwatering cleanliness. Drink this streamlined, Chablis-like wine now Wine Enthusiast Rating NEWTON, N, RED LABEL, NAPA-SONOMA Enticing and delicate aromas of white nectarine and vanilla spice are intertwined with baked apple and caramel notes. The aromas carry through to the palate where they are accented by ripe melon and fresh pineapple flavors. 12 AMERICAN WHITE WINES CHARDONNAY 252 NICKEL & NICKEL, TRUCHARD VINEYARD, CARNEROS The Truchards make an estate Chardonnay under their own label, but also sell fruit to Nickel & Nickel. In either case, the signature note you ll find in the wine is a pure, slightly sweet fruitiness recalling a perfectly ripened peach. This bottling also shows a very tasteful accent of spicy oak, but it is very subtle, which permits the purity of the fruit to shine. Wine Review Online Rating PATZ TZ & HALL, DUTTON RANCH,, RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY Bright yellow-gold. Lemon drop, minerals and a note of white jasmine on the fresh but restrained nose. Juicy and nicely delineated, with a lovely light touch and lively acidity to the citrus, mineral and floral flavors. Concentrated, saline and persistent. Summer was warm, which normally might bring the vines back onto a normal timeline, but clusters were robust, delaying our march forward even more. In the end, we picked about three weeks later than normal, but when we did, the grapes were very clean, juicy and extraordinarily flavorful. Vanilla and custardy notes mark the nose, while the flavors turn toasty and cereal-like, backed by plenty of mixed citrus fruit. It s not overly rich or ripe, but has long, mouthwatering finish.
