1 Quinta Quarterly AUTUMN 2017 HERE WE GO AGAIN! As this goes to print, we are less than two days away from harvesting our Chardonnay, heralding the arrival of vintage. It s an exciting time, and an event that culminates a year s worth of decisions and hard work in the vineyard and winery. How much to make, yield and cropping levels, the best pruning method, which oak to buy, and what style we re aiming for, are all questions that pop up regularly. My first vintage as a cellar hand was last year and it started with a bang on January 25 th, and didn t slow down until the end of April. The first few times we picked, it was a huge buzz, and adrenalin helped us all get through the midnight starts and long, hot days. But by the halfway mark, the romance of vintage wore off somewhat, and fatigue and autopilot kicked in. In one of the last few weeks, Andrew and Joe found me staring blankly doing laps in a fruit bin that only needed foot stomping for around 15 minutes. They paused and pondered, Should we tell Tash she s been in there for almost an hour?. In the end, it is the physical and mental challenge that makes winemaking so rewarding. During trial tastings throughout the year, my line of oh, you can taste the expert treading in this one! never got old. We know many of you are eager to taste the 2016 reds so flip to the back page for our planned release times. If you are visiting the North East in autumn, perhaps for Tastes of Rutherglen or Easter, please stop by and we can show you what s bubbling away out the back (and maybe plunge a vat or two for us!). 2 NEW RELEASES 2016 TEMPRANILLO 750ml, 13.5% Alc. $22.00 It s known in our vineyard as the Portuguese Tinta Roriz, but Tempranillo is the popular Spanish name for this wonderfully versatile variety. Light and bright in style with soft tannins, it s full of red cherry, strawberry, fresh herbs and is perfect with antipasto or a casual pasta night. Cellar 2-4 years RESERVE TEMPRANILLO 750ml, 13.5% Alc. $35.00 A few barrels destined for The Prince Reserva were spirited away to make this complex and savoury wine with a palate rich in wild brambles, black cherry and rosemary. Persistent tannins and a refreshing acidity are supported by a firm structure. Think roast lamb with sweet pan juices. Cellar 4-7 years VINTAGE FORTIFIED 750ml, 20.5% Alc. $40.00 Our latest release vintage port is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional and Tinto Cão. Rich and sweet notes of plum, mulberry and chocolate are complemented by warming spirit and spice. Try with a hearty ragout. Cellar 20+ years (but enjoy within 3 days of opening).
