1 Quinta Quarterly AUTUMN 2018 good things come to those who wait There s no instant gratification in the wine industry. If you want to make a new wine, you need to plan it, price it, prepare it, plant it, produce it, package it, promote it...the list goes on. Unless you can bypass the vine planting and buy fruit that is ready to harvest, this process can take many years. My father, Chris Killeen, planted several Portuguese varieties in the 1990s to further develop his passion for producing vintage ports. Since his passing, S&K has been using these fantastic varieties for red table wines as well as fortified production. However, we realised we needed diversity in our white varieties to face the challenges of climate change and growing water scarcity. After seeing how well the Portuguese red varieties thrive in Rutherglen s soils and climate, we started researching white cultivars in Alvarinho, Antão Vaz and Arinto caught our eye, especially as the latter two are grown in some of the warmest and driest parts of Portugal. The photo above was taken in 2015, after the vineyard team meticulously planted each graft - look at the straight lines! So it was with great excitement, after so many years planning and then patiently waiting for them to grow, that we picked Alvarinho and Arinto for the first time this vintage. At this stage, we want to see how they go in the winery and potentially barrel age a portion of the Arinto, but if we think they re ready for a 2018 release, club members will be the first to know. We ve warmly welcomed some fresh faces to S&K including Fred Morris, our new vineyard manager, Annie in cellar door, Rebecca in marketing & sales, Manuel (from Italy) and Martin (from France) as vintage casuals alongside Manning in the winery, whom you may have met in cellar door last year. The palate is bright and fleshy with flavours of stone fruits and spice. Medium-bodied, this wine has a delicious palate of plums, cherry and spice with smooth, velvety tannins. Try with a rich tomato-based casserole and a side of creamy polenta.

SEE S&K WEBSITE FOR MORE DETAILS THE 2018 VINTAGE SO FAR After a brief heatwave in January, the weather in Rutherglen has settled into a lovely rhythm of warm days and cool nights - perfect for even fruit ripening and spectacular colour development. We ve really only just begun but will likely pick most of our reds in March and fortified varieties in April. Many of our 2017 reds are coming out of barrel and into bottle and we look forward to releasing them throughout the year. The aroma and flavour profiles are spot on and will further develop complexity. A cooler year than usual, 2017 has given us a beautiful range of wines with three new releases ready for our Autumn packs.
