2011 Burgundy Pre-Arrival Offer Various Domaines Dear valued customer We are delighted to be able to offer you all the opportunity to acquire the 2011 red and white Burgundies from a range of high profile Burgundy producers, including Comte Georges de Vogue, Bouchard Pere et Fils, Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, Henri Gouges, Confuron-Cotetidot and Mongeard Mugneret produced many great wines, although perhaps not as consistently as 2010 and As is often the case in Burgundy, good producers who paid strong attention to the happenings in the vineyard excelled. I have provided Burghound s overview of the vintage (from the Cote de Nuits) overleaf, for those of you who are interested. Unfortunately, once again, yields were well down on average, a situation that is also reflected in the 2012 vintage. This inevitably means that allocations will be tight from our suppliers, so please act as early as possible to avoid disappointment. An additional word of note is that from 2010 to 2011, and again from 2011 to 2012, grape prices in Burgundy increased significantly as a result of increasing global demand and below average supply. Inevitably, this has resulted in some price increases, although I suspect that in a few years time, we will look back upon these prices and only dream of being able to see them again! Please also note that the continued supply of our treasured Burgundies is dependent on supporting suppliers and producers in each and every vintage. All wines are 750ml bottles unless otherwise noted and most are on a PRE- ARRIVAL BASIS. Expected delivery timeframes are noted next to each producer or wine. Pricing is on a pre-arrival basis (in some cases a just-landed basis), and will increase once landed, although payment will only be required once the wines have arrived. Should you wish to enquire about any of these wines, please call Nick, Daniel or Richard on (03) , or nick@mwwines.com.au, daniel@mwwines.com.au or richard@mwwines.com.au. Finally, we have provided tasting notes and scores (where available) from Burghound, the most respected Burgundy reviewer globally, to help guide your purchasing decisions. Burghound s scoring system is much more conservative than other reviewers, with guidelines as follows: : Truly incomparable and emotionally thrilling. A wine so rated is as good as Burgundy gets. By definition, it is reference standard for its appellation : Outstanding. Worth a special effort to purchase and cellar and will provide memorable drinking experiences : Good to High quality. Burgundies that offer solid quality in every respect and generally very good typicity. Good Value wines will often fall into this category. Worth your attention : Average to Good quality. The wine is correct, displays no noticeable flaws and will provide pleasing, if straightforward, drinking : Barely Acceptable quality. The wine is not worth your attention nor is it a good value. 75 and Below: Don t Bother. A wine with noticeable, irremediable flaws.
The Cotes de Nuits in 2011 An Irregular but Singularly Seductive Vintage The chaotic weather patterns continue as Burgundy yo-yos from an early harvest to a late one and then back again is the third vintage since 2003 that saw many domaines picking in late August, a phenomenon that did not occur once in the entire 20th century! Growers consistently lament the relatively poor mid-summer weather that has plagued the last few vintages but in a sense they have been blessings in disguise because without something to dampen the maturities we would be drinking 16% chardonnay and pinot-based wines picked in July. In this case though July arrived in April and April came to visit in July so not much could really be considered as typical in In short, it was a topsy-turvy growing season from start to finish. Despite the weird weather, which I will address in more detail below, 2011 gave us many really lovely wines that should provide for delicious drinking early on yet be capable of amply rewarding mid-term cellaring and in a few cases, they will be as long-lived as the 2010s. The 2011s are not as classic as the 2010s but they are seductively delicious without being banal and there is enough underlying terroir expression to satisfy most burg geeks. While there are several very interesting characteristics of the 2011 vintage the one that I find to be the most intriguing is just how good the phenolic maturities are yet the sugar maturities are remarkably low, in fact 2011 is one of the lower alcohol vintages in some time. This makes for seductively suave textures that avoid any sense of heaviness as there is good freshness and sufficient acid verve to maintain the finishing balance. This seductive character is further enhanced by the fact that not only are the supporting tannins ripe but they are exceptionally fine-grained; indeed this is one characteristic that both 2011 and 2010 share. As to quality, let s be frank: it s variable but the key take away is that it was indeed possible to make stunningly attractive wines. I confess that I very much like the vintage and I would go so far as to say that if you enjoyed the 2000s, you will also enjoy the 2011s. However, I hasten to point out that the two did not fashion wines that are interchangeable with one another, simply that the richness, generosity and notably ripe structural elements that the 2000s possess also infuses the 11s. That s the good news, but it s not all good news as there are some domaines that didn t do as well as I m used to seeing from them. Indeed to that end I have included in my general comments about each domaine my view of how they performed relative to the general quality I found in the Côte de Nuits. And when things did go a bit sideways, it usually was because the picking date was too early. As I will discuss in more detail below, the meteorological services were constantly predicting heavy rains during the harvest and the prospect of having dilute and/or rotten fruit panicked some domaines into picking too soon. This is to say that despite the generally very high level of phenolic maturity in 2011, there are still some wines that are moderately astringent. I stress that astringency is not at all the norm for the vintage but there are some wines that are somewhat green. Otherwise, there simply isn t much not to like about the 2011 vintage except for one key factor: there is less of it than would be the case in a typical vintage, though to be sure, it s certainly larger than the tiny 2010 and 2012 vintages. This is due to a variety of reasons such as some frost damage, some limited hail damage and some échaudage, which is to say sunburned berries. But all of these put together pale by comparison to a troubled flowering due to rain and wind in the middle of it. What is interesting about the floraison in 2011 is that it transpired quickly, which is normally conducive to a successful fertilization.
Unfortunately, right in the middle of it was a 2 day period of wind and rain that caused a lot of shatter. As such, total yields were off between 20 and 40% and thus notwithstanding the continued favorable movement of many currencies vis-à-vis the euro, there will be little incentive on the part of the growers to reduce prices. I have written an article addressing the current state of the burgundy market which you will find below. There is another potential bugaboo that should be mentioned and that is the possibility that some wines will be affected byladybug taint in much the same fashion that some claim affected the 2004s. During the harvest there was a heavy infestation of ladybugs and for those domaines that did not rigorously eliminate them during the sorting process, they may have exposed their wines to problems. Below you will see an extensive article that discusses the pros and cons of the theory that ladybugs were responsible for the pronounced vegetal character of the 2004s. From an overall quality perspective, I would go so far as to say that out of the triumvirate of 2009, 2010 and 2011 that 2009 is in third place, 2011 in second and 2010 is in first doesn t quite hit the highest highs of 2010, and it s not quite as consistent as 2009 but it s encouraging to consider that it is competitive with both. Moreover, any number of producers made outstanding 2011s and thus despite the relatively short crop, it will still be possible to find them to purchase for your cellars. Burghound.com January 2013
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue (Arriving October) MW Wines 2011 Bourgogne Blanc $369 per bottle (from 100% Musigny Blanc Grand Cru vines, soon to be labeled Grand Cru) No tasting notes available. An extremely rare wine, from just over half a hectare of vines Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru $319 per bottle (from 100% younger vine Musigny Grand Cru) It is immediately evident that there is more here with its highly complex, cool and ultra-pure red berry fruit, floral, spice and stone hints. There is excellent delineation to the voluminous and attractively textured medium weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the saline-infused finish. There is a real sense of energy on the finish where the supporting tannins are just ripe enough to avoid any sense of asperity or greenness Points, Drink Bonnes Mares Grand Cru $599 per bottle $1,299 per MAGNUM A strikingly well-layered nose of dark berry fruit, spice and earth gives way to very rich, round and again quite voluminous middle weight plus flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in muscular finish. In much the same fashion as the Chambolle 1er, there is enough acidity that presently sticks out somewhat and while it may integrate, my score will remain cautious until I have a chance to see the finished wine in bottle next year Points, Drink Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru $799 per bottle $1,649 per MAGNUM A remarkably, and most attractively, cool and restrained nose of various red berries, spice and a beautiful array of floral elements complements well the rich and equally cool mineral-tinged big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors that possess a really lovely sense of underlying tension on the clean and pure finish that delivers strikingly good length. This is also clean and firm but with slightly better phenolic maturity to the supporting structural elements which should allow this beauty to age successfully for many years to come. Don t miss! Points, Drink 2026+
Bouchard Pere et Fils (all wines have just arrived, except as noted) The Whites MW Wines Burghound: I found the quality of the Bouchard 2011 whites to be very good to excellent when considered in the context of the vintage Beaune du Chateau Blanc 1er Cru $53 per bottle A pungent nose of freshly grated citrus rind, grapefruit and white flowers gives way to cool, pure and restrained medium weight flavors that offer just enough complexity to be interesting on the clean and inviting finish. This should drink well immediately but also be capable of rewarding a few years of cellar time too if desired. 88 Points, Drink Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrieres $119 per bottle This is just as aromatically pure as the Goutte d'or but with just a bit more elegance to the pear and green apple scents along with the hallmark spiciness of a fine Genevrières. There is really lovely intensity to the delineated, energetic and mineral-inflected flavors that also exude a saline character on the impressively long, balanced and stylish finish. Good stuff here and worth considering. Sweet spot, outstanding! 92 Points, Drink Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres $129 per bottle The wood treatment is all but invisible and easily allows the ultra-pure and elegant nose of mineral reduction, green apple, white flowers and citrus aromas to shine. There is a terrific sense of underlying tension with laser-like focus to the medium-bodied and intensely mineral-driven flavors, all wrapped in a dry and somewhat curiously, somewhat exotic finish. This is surprisingly forward compared to its usual restrained style which should allow it to drink well on the young side if desired. Sweet spot, outstanding! 92 Points, Drink Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru $239 per bottle A pungent and well-layered nose features notes of green apple, grapefruit, lemon peel and wet stone. There is outstanding power and excellent punch to the beautifully well-delineated big-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality on the saline-infused, explosive and hugely long finish. This is a very impressive effort that is blessed with notably good underlying material and this will require resting for the better part of a decade in a cool cellar. 93 Points, Drink 2018+
2011 Montrachet Grand Cru $899 per bottle This is aromatically quite similar at this early stage to the La Cabotte. There is an extraordinarily powerful effort with impressive mid-palate density and so much dry extract that it imparts a sappy, even seductive texture to the mouth coating flavors that terminate in a breathtakingly long finish. Moreover, as good as the La Cabotte is, and it is indeed exceptionally good, there is simply no contest between the two wines as there is just another dimension present here. In sum, this beautifully well-balanced Monty is an absolute knockout! Don t miss! 96 Points, Drink The Reds Phillipe Prost: Perhaps 2011 could be thought of as the younger and smaller brother of Burghound: As to the quality of the Bouchard 2011s, it's difficult for the big merchant houses such as Drouhin, Jadot and Bouchard to really outperform a given vintage simply because they have so many appellations up and down the Côte because the large players make up so much of the average. Put another way, they very much help establish, in a very real sense, the benchmark for each and every vintage. This isn't to say that they can't have individual wines that merit accolades, just that it's exceptionally difficult for them to escape the vicissitudes of the vintage. So with that duly noted, my sense of things for Bouchard in 2011 is that they did in fact turn in an admirable performance in 2011 generally speaking Beaune du Chateau Rouge 1er Cru $53 per bottle This is more deeply pitched than it typically is with a pretty mix of various dark berries and plenty of earth character that is also reflected by the suave medium weight flavors that possess a relatively sophisticated mouth feel before terminating in a solidly long and complex finish. This should drink well early, in fact almost immediately if desired yet it should offer a few years of upside development potential. 89 Points, Drink Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse $43 per HALF bottle An exceptionally pretty and perfumed nose of both red and dark pinot fruit, earth and spice hints precedes attractively rich, silky and delicious flavors that possess a lilting mouth feel on the long, focused and balanced finish. There is good phenolic maturity and ample dry extract and I would say that this is the best Clos de la Mousse since the outstanding 2003 version. Outstanding! 91 Points, Drink 2019+
2011 Beaune 1er Cru Greves Vigne de l Enfant Jesus $149 per bottle (Full bottles have arrived, half bottles arriving November) $79 per HALF bottle There is a touch of green tea to the gamey and overtly sauvage aromas of dark berry fruit, plum and floral hints. Like the Teurons there is a really lovely mouth feel to the intense, detailed and refined mediumbodied flavors that possess good if not exceptional volume by the standards of this wine. There is impressive depth and sneaky length to the finish as it almost dies out only to recommence. Good stuff but note that patience will be required. Sweet spot, outstanding! 92 Points, Drink Le Corton Grand Cru $179 per bottle (Arriving November) Discreet if not invisible wood surrounds the complex but restrained red currant, spice, smoke, earth and sauvage permeated aromas. There is excellent power and plenty of punch to the broad-shouldered and solidly well-concentrated flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration before culminating in a balanced and exceptionally persistent finish. This classically styled Corton really does a slow build from the mid-palate on back, though note well that it will be pointless to open this in its youth; in fact, don't buy this unless you intend to cellar it Points, Drink Chambertin Grand Cru Clos de Beze $459 per bottle This is also moderately toasty though it's not enough to hide the hallmark spiciness of a classic Clos de Bèze along with ripe black pinot fruit, stone and game nuances. There is excellent richness and impressive volume to the extract-rich mid-palate that imparts a seductive mouth feel to the medium-weight flavors. The aspect that is really remarkable here though is just the sheer depth, which when coupled with the superb length make for one exciting wine. Note carefully though that this will also need extended cellaring. Don t Miss! Points, Drink 2028+
Domaine Henri Gouges (Arriving late October) MW Wines 2011 Nuits St. Georges $69 per bottle A notably riper nose speaks of pretty red and dark berry fruit where earth and sauvage nuances can also be detected. There is good richness to the supple and round medium-bodied flavors that possess good punch on the dusty, delicious and solidly complex finish Points, Drink Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de Porrets St. Georges $99 per bottle Here too a background application of oak is visible on the intensely earthy and beautifully complex nose of both red and blue pinot fruit, earth, violet and plum scents. There is good size, weight and power to the relatively supple mid-palate though the firm core of tannins is apparent on the moderately austere and impressively long finish. This is very Nuits in character but not unduly rustic or rough Points, Drink Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers $109 per bottle This was quite strongly reduced and about the only visible aspect is a bit of wood toast. There is fine concentration as the mid-palate benefits from the abundant dry extract that imparts a velvety texture to the intense and round medium weight flavors that culminate in a mildly austere finish that stops a bit short. This is on the disjointed side today but the underlying material appears excellent plus the consistent track record of this wine is such that my range offers the benefit of the doubt. Note that this will require at least a decade of cellar time before it realizes its full potential , Drink Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains $149 per bottle This is also somewhat toasty though not so much that the earthy, ripe and distinctly sauvage aromas of plum and cassis cannot be appreciated. The palate impression is strikingly rich and muscular and the typical bold and brash flavors of a classic Vaucrains are present before terminating in a wonderfully intense, austere and hugely long finish. As is almost always the case with the Gouges Vaucrains, this is very firmly structured and will need all of a decade and very probably then some to fully mature. Outstanding! Points, Drink Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les St. Georges $189 per bottle $389 per MAGNUM As is usually the case this is the most elegant wine in the range with its lightly oaked nose of spice, violet, plus, earth and humus. There is excellent richness and concentration to the distinctly earthy large-scaled but not huge flavors that possess dense but relatively fine supporting tannins on the wonderfully persistent finish. While the Vaucrains is an excellent wine it appears that there is just a bit more present here. This is well worth your consideration, at least if you're prepared to cellar it for a minimum of 10 years. Sweet spot, outstanding! Points, Drink 2023+
Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg (Just arrived) MW Wines Marie-Andrée and Marie-Christine Mugneret: The 2011s should drink well young but because they're very well balanced, they should age beautifully for those clients who prefer older wines." Burghound: The hits just keep on coming at this domaine and it's remarkable how good both vintages are. My advice is not to miss them! 2011 Vosne Romanee $99 per bottle Here the expressive nose is a bit more elegant with essence of plum and violet aromas that are trimmed in notes of anise and sandalwood. There is a silky texture to the utterly delicious and seductively proportioned medium-bodied flavors that are not especially concentration but they are harmonious and impeccably well-balanced Points, Drink Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots $125 per bottle Here the wood spice is no longer subtle though it's by no means dominant either as the distinctly ripe aromas of cassis, earth and black cherry and still be appreciated. The suave, round and opulent flavors possess a very supple and accessible mid-palate before culminating in a mouth coating and lingering finish. Like the Au Bas de Combes, this is more Vosne than Nuits in Points, Drink Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vignerondes $129 per bottle A background touch of oak frames the perfumed, spicy and delicately earthy aromas of red currant and black cherry. There is a wonderfully velvety texture to the strikingly pure medium-bodied flavors that brim with structure-buffering dry extract that really coats the palate on the admirably persistent finish. I really like both the sense of underlying tension as well as the delivery as this is very style. Worth considering Points, Drink Echezeaux Grand Cru $239 per bottle (Only two bottles available) A generously wooded nose (though again not dominantly so) surrounds the very ripe aromas of cassis, natural spice, warm earth and violets. There is an opulent mouth feel to the pure and palate coating flavors that brim with an impressive reserve of dry extract before terminating in a long and saline-infused finish. This is certainly very good but in the category of minor nits, the finish is not quite as impeccably well-balanced compared to those of the Ruchottes and Clos de Vougeot Points, Drink 2019+
Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot (Arriving late October) MW Wines Yves Confuron: As to the wines, they are quite suave yet very well balanced. They are highly aromatic and in this sense they remind me quite a bit of the 85s and should be accessible young yet age well too. I like this vintage a lot. Burghound: if you like the serious built-to-age old school style, this is one of the very best addresses around Vosne Romanee $82 per bottle A restrained but quite spicy nose of dark berries, plum and a touch of sandalwood. The supple, round and delicious middle weight flavors display mild austerity on the long, firm and serious finish. This will require up to a decade to be fully mature Points, Drink Gevrey Chambertin $82 per bottle An attractively fresh and expressive nose speaks of newly turned earth, dark berry and a hint of the sauvage leads to intense, detailed and lightly mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that are supported by firm but relatively refined tannins on the dusty, mouth coating and beautifully balanced finish. This is a Gevrey villages of refinement and grace. Recommended but note that cellaring it is a must. Outstanding! Top value! Points, Drink Chambolle Musigny $82 per bottle A pretty, even perfumed nose of red currant, violet and spiced plum slides gracefully into appealingly vibrant, cool and reserved middle weight flavors that also evidence good minerality that continues onto the moderately austere and ever-so-slightly rustic finish. This is a bit atypical for the appellation Points, Drink Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Derriere la Grange $145 per bottle An exceptionally pretty and admirably pure nose of red currant, spice and mineral hints merges seamlessly into detailed, vibrant and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that echo the minerality of the nose. There is excellent balance and refined tannins on the mildly austere but beautifully lingering finale. Note however that even though the structure is fine grained it's dense and very firm so patience will be required Points, Drink Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut St Jacques $149 per bottle As one would reasonably expect given the position of the vineyard, this is exceptionally cool yet the nose of dark berries, floral and wet stone aromas is clearly quite ripe. There is outstanding intensity to the precise and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that brim with a fine minerality before concluding in an impressively well-balanced, persistent and harmonious finish. Note however that here too patience will be required as this will need 12 to 15 years to realize its full development potential. Sweet Spot! Outstanding! Points, Drink 2023+
2011 Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots $159 per bottle An expressive and intensely spicy and wonderfully floral nose of black and blue pinot fruit introduces velvety and palate coating flavors that possess plenty of size and weight as well as an abundance of sappy dry extract. While the mid-palate is quite generous the finale is very serious and I particularly like the excellent depth on the stunningly long finish. This offers grand cru level quality in 2011 and is definitely recommended. Sweet Spot! Outstanding! Points, Drink Echezeaux Grand Cru $225 per bottle This is also exceptionally spicy with ripe aromas of earth and black currant as well as plenty of floral influence. There is excellent volume and phenolic maturity to the underlying structural elements that shape and support the relatively large-scaled flavors that culminate in a driving finish that delivers flat out phenomenal length. Note that that this beauty is a good choice only for the very, very patient among you as it's built for the very long-term Points, Drink Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru $225 per bottle Here too there is considerable floral influence on the notably ripe and somber earth-infused aromas of smoked meat and plum. The supple and really quite suave flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration, power and an overt muscularity before ending in an impressively complex and long finish. This is also quite firm but not as firm as either the Echézeaux or Charmes Points, Drink Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru $299 per bottle A restrained yet distinctly sauvage nose displays notes of dark berries, freshly turned earth, underbrush, floral hints and a discreet spiciness. The suave and seductively textured broad-shouldered and overtly powerful flavors possess plenty of mid-palate density as there is a plenitude of palate coating dry extract. This is a big and robust but not excessively structured effort though like all of the Confuron grand crus, it will need a long stay in a cool cellar. Don t Miss! Points, Drink 2023+
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret (Arriving late October) MW Wines Vincent Mongeard: Overall, the wines are exceptionally pretty and while I wouldn't call 2011 a great vintage, it's certainly a very good to excellent one." Burghound: : I would call the Mongeard 2011s as very much performing in-line with the overall quality of the vintage. I would in particular call your attention to the Boudots and the old vines Echézeaux, if for no other reason than it's the last vintage for this particular parcel that has been historically used to produce the Echézeaux Vieille Vignes, as it was donated to the Hospices de Beaune by its owner Vosne Romanee $85 per bottle A spicy and exceptionally fresh nose of mostly essence of red berries coupled with plum and blue berry hints. There is good detail and punch to the light mineral tones of the delicious flavors that offer good depth though the finish is a bit clipped at present, probably due to the significant amount of CO Points, Drink Chambolle Musigny $95 per bottle A touch of wood frames the beautifully fresh and expressive nose of bright red pinot fruit that displays shades of floral scents. There is a really lovely mouth feel to the delicious and round flavors that tighten up significantly on the firm, balanced and long finish. This is less elegant than the Vosne but there is more overall depth and better length as well Points, Drink Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Petits Monts $139 per bottle This is quite floral with rose petal, violets and lavender notes adding plenty of breadth to the pure and cool essence of red pinot fruit. There is lovely detail and underlying tension to the mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that culminate in a linear and impressively persistent finish. This is fashioned in a very understated style and is extremely pretty. Worth considering. Outstanding! Points, Drink Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots $149 per bottle Not reviewed, but invariably their standout premier cru. Extremely limited Echezeaux Grand Cru Vieille Vigne $249 per bottle This is also absolutely gorgeously spicy with cool aromas of red currant, black cherry and cassis. There is exceptionally good richness and buckets of palate drenching dry extract that relegate the otherwise very firm tannins to the background on the concentrated, powerful and hugely long finish. This is a special Echézeaux Points, Drink 2026+
2011 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru $259 per bottle An intensely floral nose also displays a broad array of spice elements on the ripe yet cool red berry fruit suffused nose. There is fine concentration and real depth of material to the pure, intense and broad-scaled flavors that also display plenty of dry extract that buffers the firm structure and imparts a velvety texture to the austere and very serious finish. This is also terrific Points, Drink Richebourg Grand Cru $549 per bottle A highly restrained and incredibly subtle nose speaks of a huge array of spice elements as well as a panoply of floral, red berry fruit and exotic teas. The superbly intense, powerful, focused and wonderfully rich flavors terminate in a palate staining, austere, brooding and balanced finish that seems to go on and on. This is incredibly compact and serious and there is so much material that it wouldn't surprise me much if this ultimately exceeded my predicted range. Note carefully though that this is absolutely not a wine for early consumption and 20 years will probably be necessary for this to reach its full apogee Points, Drink 2029+
