Today, Vienna is the only designated wine region in the world, which is located entirely within the boundaries of a major city.

2 VIENNA AND ITS WINE it has to be a piece of heaven The history of viticulture in Vienna is closely connected with the history of the city. Celts, Illyrians, Roman legionaries all have produced wine here at some time. Today, Vienna is the only designated wine region in the world, which is located entirely within the boundaries of a major city. Another unique feature is that the City of Vienna has managed its own winery for over 100 years. The estate vineyards stretch over 60 hectares, and Cobenzl is now regarded as one of the most important Viennese wine producers. It is here that outstanding quality wines are produced under the careful direction of Thomas Podsednik, and the winery has won numerous national and international awards.

From the fruit-driven white wines, such as Grüner Veltliner and Riesling to the rich, reserve white wines and the full-bodied red wines. Senator wines the richer style of white wines from highly ripe grapes, prolonged skincontact and longer maturation in the cellar. Wines with longevity and further development potential. Lagen, or single vineyard wines the best vintages of the grapes picked display high ripeness, longer aging on the lees and partial maturation in oak barrels. I am pleased that our winery, owned by the city of Vienna, is playing in the league of top Austrian estates, and has done for many years now. The result is a wine that reflects its origin. To guarantee this quality, the wine of origin designation was introduced, effective from the 2013 vintage, the Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC.

It is located right in the Vienna Woods, high above the River Danube, with a marvellous view of the city. The Winery Cobenzl Vienna offers wine tastings and guided tours, sells wines and is a popular location for dream weddings. The fact that it is a winery with a view does not only refer to its location and view over the city but also to its philosophy that includes sustainable viticulture, beekeeping, and producing its own energy with a photovoltaic system. Winery Cobenzl Vienna was one of the first Austrian businesses to receive the certification Sustainable Austria.

6 CLIMATE, SOIL & THE ART OF WINEMAKING Diversity of grape varieties and wine styles Vineyards in Grinzing, on Nussberg and Bisamberg are cultivated by the Cobenzl wine estate. The unique microclimates of cool nights and warmth from the Pannonian region is moderated by the effects of the River Danube. Its surface reflects sunshine and reduces the wide range of day and night temperatures; particularly on the south-facing slopes, with constant warmth and lots of autumnal sun. Ideal conditions for producing wines with delicate fruit and mineral character.

7 The soils in Grinzing and on Nussberg are rich in shelllimestone and sandy loam. These vineyards, that are known as Pfeffer, Seidenhaus, Reisenberg and Bellevue are amongst the most-prized sites in the city. The Bisamberg in the 21st municipal district of Vienna is highly regarded for its dry climate with generally very low rainfall and prevailing wines. The grape varieties that flourish here include the Wiener Gemischter Satz on Falkenberg, Grüner Veltliner and Blauer Zweigelt in Hofbreiten and fruit-driven red wines from Magdalenenhof.
