However, the 1982 is still evolving at a glacial pace. The concentration remains remarkable, and the wine is a full-bodied, exuberant, rich, classic Pauillac in its aromatic and flavor profiles. It s just juiced up (similar to an athlete on steroids) and is all the better for it. This remarkable effort will last as long as the 1982 Mouton, but it has always been more approachable and decadently fruity. Drink it now, in 20 years, and in 50 years! Don t miss it if you are a wine lover. 98 WS 100 WA 1 bt. per lot $500 - $600 2 bts. per lot $3,400 - $3,900

7 Lots Vinous Gems and Generously Endowed Formats 20 CLOS SAINT-JEAN CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE SANCTUS SANCTORUM 2009 More flamboyant, open and exotic, with notes of kirsch liqueur, cassis, toasted almonds, sandalwood, lavender, and crushed flowers that you can smell from across the room, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum expands on the palate, with incredible concentration, building, sweet tannin and a finish that just won t quit. Where the 2010 cuts a more focused path, this puppy is overflowing with fruit and texture. It too is a perfect wine that will evolve for another couple decades, yet given this showing, don t hesitate to crack bottles over the coming couple of years. 100 WA 1 mag. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in Maturity: WA 1 mag. per lot $400 - $ CHÂTEAU PONTET-CANET WA 1 5 ltr. per lot $900 - $1, CHÂTEAU LA DAME DE MONTROSE 2009 St.-Estèphe. 1 6 ltr. per lot $400 - $ CHÂTEAU D`ARCHE SAUTERNES 2007 Sauternais. 12 hf. bts. Full-bodied and stunningly rich with laser-like precision, this is a powerful, massive yet exceptionally well-balanced wine that should be forgotten for a decade and drunk over the following years. 100 WA 3 bts. per lot $700 - $1, E. A blend of 85% Grenache with the rest Syrah, Mourvedre and small dollops of the other authorized varietals, this wine tends to come from the estate s holdings in the eastern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape. The opaque purplecolored 2009 exhibits magnificent, rich berry fruit intertwined with cedar, Christmas fruitcake, licorice, charcuterie, roasted meats, smoked duck, kirsch, blackberries and god knows what else. It is an amazingly complex, rich, full-throttle wine that reminds me somewhat of what the 1990 tasted like in 1994/1995. It is a magnificent Chateauneuf du Pape. If you are looking for the garrigue component, it s also there. 98 WA 12 bts. per lot $1,000 - $1,100 1 mag. per lot $200 - $300

The 2008 Dominus may eclipse the 2007, but it may just be a matter of style. The 2007 Dominus, the quintessential model of haute couture, is pure elegance exhibiting a seamless integration of wood, tannin, alcohol and acidity as well as a complex bouquet of cedar, new saddle leather, sweet kirsch, black currant and plum fruit and a notion of licorice. Both the 2007 and 2008 Dominus should drink well for years. 98 WA 1 6 ltr. (OWC) per lot $1,700 - $2,000 Lots Well Cellared and Delicious Wines from Various Collectors 40 CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 1982 Pomerol. Drink WA 2 bts. per lot $5,000 - $7, CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 1995 Pomerol. The wine exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, followed by a knock-out nose of pain grille, jammy black fruits, and roasted coffee. On the palate, it possesses teeth-staining extract levels, massive body, and rich, sweet black fruits buttressed by powerful, noticeable tannin. A formidably endowed wine with layers of extract, this is a huge, tannic, monstrous-sized Petrus that will require a minimum of 10 years of cellaring. Forget all the nonsense about Merlot producing sweet, soft, ready to drink wines, because low yielding, old Merlot vines made in the way of Petrus and other top Pomerols frequently possess as much aging potential as any great Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine in the world. Look for the 1995 Petrus to last for 50+ years. Anticipated maturity: WS 96 WA CHÂTEAU PICHON-LONGUEVILLE BARON 1990 Pauillac. 2ième Cru Classé plastic wrapped; soiled labels; slightly corroded capsule A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate s two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still inky/blue/purpletinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish. While drinkable, its evolution is extremely slow, and I would not be surprised to see it last another two decades or more. Drink WA 6 bts. per lot $2,000 - $2, CHÂTEAU DUCRU-BEAUCAILLOU 1996 (3) Saint-Julien. 2ième Cru Classé plastic wrapped The 1996 is long, with a deep mid-palate. It also reveals tannin in the finish. This wine is remarkable. It is muscular, concentrated, and classic. Bottled in late June, 1998, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a knock-out nose of minerals, licorice, cassis, and an unmistakable lead pencil smell that I often associate with top vintages of Lafite- Rothschild. It is sweet and full-bodied, yet unbelievably rich with no sense of heaviness or flabbiness. The wine possesses high tannin, but it is extremely ripe, and the sweetness of the black currant, spice-tinged Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is pronounced. This profound, backward Ducru- Beaucaillou is a must purchase. It will be fascinating for readers who own the 1996 to follow the evolution of this exceptional vintage. Anticipated maturity: WA CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE-POYFERRÉ 1990 (6) St. Julien. 2ième Cru Classé plastic wrapped Absolutely spectacular, the 1990 Leoville Poyferre is much more evolved than either of its two Leoville neighbors. Its opaque plum/garnet color is accompanied by a gorgeous bouquet of smoke, charcoal, creme de cassis, and flowers. Fleshy and opulent, it comes across like a St.-Julien with a Pomerol texture and allure. This beauty has reached full maturity where it should remain for another two decades. Drink: WA 9 bts. per lot $2,900 - $3,300 2 bts. per lot $3,800 - $4,800

The biggest, richest, fullest-bodied Lynch Bages until the 2000, the fully mature 1990 exhibits an unbelievably explosive nose of black currants, cedarwood, herbs and spice. The majestic, classically Bordeaux aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, voluptuously textured, rich, intense wine with superb purity as well as thrilling levels of fruit, glycerin and sweetness. This beauty should continue to provide immense pleasure over the next 15+ years. 94 WS 99 WA CHÂTEAU LYNCH-BAGES 2000 (1) plastic wrapped 10 bts. per lot $3,300 - $4,000 CHÂTEAU PICHON-LONGUEVILLE BARON 1990 Pauillac. 2ième Cru Classé plastic wrapped; soiled labels; slightly corroded capsule A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate s two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeaux chateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. Anticipated maturity: WA 3 bts. per lot $3,500 - $4,000 CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1986 (1) u. 1ts This is serious, aristocratic Mouton, a true vin de garde and yes, I do think drinkers will have to wait until it reaches its true peak. Premier Cru Classé The 2009 Beaune 150 th Anniversary Cuvee is a commemorative wine created to celebrate Jadot s 150th birthday. The 150th Anniversary Cuvee is a selection of the maison s best parcels in the Cote de Beaune. It boasts extraordinary richness and length, not to mention fabulous overall balance. Seemingly endless layers of intensely fragrant dark red fruit build to the effortless, huge finish. This is a fabulous showing from Jadot. It is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. I think it is safe to say Jadot hit it out the park with this effort. Readers will be tempted to drink the 2009 early, so immense is its appeal, but opening a bottle before its tenth birthday is likely to be nothing more than an academic exercise. 10 CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1997 (2) CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1998 (1) u. 1bn; soiled label A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc (57% of the production was utilized), it is an extremely powerful, superconcentrated wine offering notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. It is massive, with awesome concentration, mouth-searing tannin levels, and a saturated flavor profile that grips the mouth with considerable intensity. This is a 50-year Mouton, but patience will be required as it will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade. Anticipated maturity: WA 3 bts. per lot $1,300 - $1, CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 2000 (2) u. 1bn Perhaps the most beautiful packaging ever on a Bordeaux bottle, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild literally produced a work of art in the gold-engraved bottle of 2000 Mouton Rothschild. Of course, one can t drink the glass, but this is a top-flight Mouton Rothschild, eclipsed only by the 2006 and A rich, tannic, earthy style, with loads of creme de cassis and floral notes, the final blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot is a full-bodied wine with plenty of coffee, earth, chocolatey notes, and still plenty of tannin to resolve. Drink Date: WA CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 2005 (1) There are layers and layers of black fruit intermingling with graphite and black pepper, and it wisely reins everything in on the finish that is more classic in style and in keeping with the vintage. If you are fortunate enough to have this wine in your cellar, even though those tannins are starting to be abraded by time, afford it another five or six years. I found everything still there for a perfect rating, but I was just struck by how tight and backward the wine was. A blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, the wine still has a dark ruby/purple color and an extraordinarily youthful nose of graphite, black currants, sweet, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and flowers. The wine is rich, medium to full-bodied, but has that ethereal elegance and purity that is always Lafite. I originally predicted that it would first reach maturity in 2011, but I would push that back by 5-7 years now, although it has years of life in front of it. Owners of this beauty are probably best advised to forget it for 5 years. Medium to high acidity, medium body and medium to firm, fine tannins support earthy, blackcurrant-preserve fruit. Long finish. Drink now WS 95 WA CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 1996 (1) Margaux. 1er Cru Classé The 1996 Chateau Margaux, which was bottled in September, 1998, is undoubtedly one of the great classics produced under the Mentzelopoulos regime. In many respects, it is the quintessential Chateau Margaux, as well as the paradigm for this estate, combining measured power, extraordinary elegance, and admirable complexity. I tasted the wine on three separate occasions in January, and in short, it's a beauty! The color is opaque purple. The wine offers extraordinarily pure notes of blackberries, cassis, pain grille, and flowers, gorgeous sweetness, a seamless personality, and full body, with nothing out of place. The final blend (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) contains a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. It tastes complete and long, although backward. My instincts suggest this wine will shut down, but at present it is open-knit, tasting like a recently bottled wine. The fruit is exceptionally sweet and pure, and there are layers of flavor in the mouth. I do believe this wine will develop an extraordinary perfume, and possess a high level of richness. Anticipated maturity: WS 99 WA 3 bts. per lot $2,600 - $3, CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2003 The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estate s great classics, the Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style. It is just coming into its plateau of maturity where it should hold for years. This is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage make no mistake about that. 96 WS 100 WA 3 bts. per lot $3,300 - $3,800 2 hf. bts. per lot $1,400 - $1,600

11 CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 1994 Pomerol. Opaque purple/black in color, with a sweet vanilla, pain grillee, jammy cherry and cassis-scented nose, this full-bodied, densely packed wine reveals layers of flavor, and an inner-core of sweetness with huge quantities of glycerin and depth. A tannic, classic style of Petrus, with immense body, great purity, and a backward finish, this wine requires a decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: WS 93 WA 2 bts. per lot $3,800 - $4, ARAUJO ESTATE WINES CABERNET SAUVIGNON EISELE VINEYARD 2009 The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard is one of the great wines of the vintage. It brings together gorgeous aromatics, juicy, expressive red fruit and silky tannins. Now seemingly past a period of closure post-bottling, the 2009 looks like a wine that will drink well pretty much throughout its entire life. The 2009 is a totally sexy Cabernet endowed with stunning depth and a rich, enveloping personality. This is pure Araujo and pure Eisele. Anticipated maturity: WS 97 WA 6 bts. per lot $1,800 - $2, BOND ESTATES ST. EDEN RED WINE 2004 (6) The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon St. Eden, which comes from a valley floor vineyard in Oakville, is another dead ringer for a great Pauillac, possibly a young Mouton. Dense bluish/purple in color with stunning notes of cedarwood, unsmoked high-quality cigar tobacco, creme de cassis and espresso roast, this wine has fabulous fruit, density and a full-bodied, youthful mouthfeel, wonderful balance and purity, and a terrific finish that goes on for close to a minute. This is also relatively open, but slightly more structured than the Melbury. There s no sense deferring gratification, so I would suggest drinking it over the next years, possibly longer. 93 WS 98 WA BOND ESTATES VECINA PROPRIETARY RED WINE 2004 (1) The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Vecina emerges from an 11-acre western Oakville hillside not far from the famed Harlan Estate. This wine, which I rated identically in 2008, has a huge nose of bouquet garni, roasted meats and is clearly the spiciest of all the Bond 2004s. It is full-bodied, viscous and thick, with some tannins still to resolve in the finish. Again, there s no reason to defer gratification because of the incredibly complex aromas as well as flavors. Some new saddle leather also makes an appearance in this multidimensional, full and impressive wine. It offers relatively soft and silky tannins by the standards of Montelena, but they re there. It is full-bodied, rich and impressive. Cabernet Sauvignon from the northern end of the Napa Valley in Calistoga tends to be the St.-Estèphe of This wine is certainly one of the great ones. The 2006 reveals medium to full body, austere tannins and lots of red and black fruits, dusty, loamy soil undertones and a hint of herbs/tobacco leaf. Give it another 4-5 years of bottle age and drink it over the following WA 11 bts. per lot $1,100 - $1, CHATEAU MONTELENA ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2008 The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a gorgeous, mid-weight wine laced with mint, cassis, sweet herbs and tobacco. It is an understated, gracious wine from start to finish. This is a relatively approachable vintage for the Estate. It shows tons of finesse and mid-palate generosity while maintaining a mediumbodied personality. Today it is quite young, although it is drinking well. Readers who prefer more tertiary notes will want to cellar the wine for at least a few years. Anticipated maturity: WS 92 WA 11 bts. per lot $1,200 - $1,400 CLIFF LEDE CABERNET SAUVIGNON POETRY bts. (OWC) per lot $1,700 - $1, DOMINUS ESTATE 2006 Very deep garnet-purple colour. A wonderfully perfumed nose of violets, crushed blackberries, black cherries, mace and cloves leading into some smoked meat and mocha aromas with swirling. Very structured on the palate with high acidity, a medium to high level of fine tannins and a full body providing plenty of flesh in the mid-palate. Very long layered finish. 96 WA 12 bts. (OWC) per lot $2,100 - $2, DOMINUS ESTATE 2009 The 2009 Dominus saw about 40% new oak compared to the 20% for Napanook. A seamless classic, it offers a symphony of red and black currants, Asian plum sauce, lavender, and underbrush. Sweet Christmas fruitcake characteristics emerge from this magnificent Dominus that finished at 14.5% natural alcohol (slightly higher than usual). The seamless integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol, the brilliant length and overall compelling complexity and richness make it one of the great classics from this historic estate. It should drink well for years. 93 WS 97 WA 10 bts. per lot $2,300 - $2, DOMINUS ESTATE bts. (OWC) per lot $1,800 - $2,000

12 HARLAN ESTATE PROPRIETARY RED 2003 Its dense opaque plum/purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of graphite, camphor, creme de cassis, smoky barbecue wood and a hint of forest floor. Similar flavors hit the mouth with fullbodied splendor, a multidimensional mouthfeel and texture, and the sensational finish lasts more than 45 seconds. Some tannins are still present, and this wine seems much younger than expected at ten years of age, so give it 4-5 more years of bottle age and consume it over the following years. 93 WA 6 bts. (OWC) per lot $3,400 - $3, HARLAN ESTATE PROPRIETARY RED WINE 2004 A great showing at this retrospective, this wine, which seems like a hypothetical blend of a Pauillac, St.-Estephe and Graves, represents around 1,500 cases from 40 acres of beautifully manicured hillside vineyards overlooking Oakville. Still dense purple to the rim, with notes of creme de cassis, charcoal, blackberry and sweet toast, the wine is full-bodied and voluptuously textured with the tannins largely resolved. But the density and richness suggest this wine can go a long, long way, even though the window for drinking it seems open and inviting already. A world-class, first-growth wine if there ever was one from Napa, this is simply an exquisite Harlan Estate that has atypically reached mid to late adolescence at the age of ten. That is great given the fact that these are 30- to 40-year wines possibly even half-century wines. Drink it over the next 30 years. 98 WS 98 WA 6 bts. (OWC) per lot $4,100 - $4, HARLAN ESTATE PROPRIETARY RED WINE 2011 More dense, tannic, complex and fuller-bodied thatn Harlan's 2011 The Maiden is the 2011 Harlan Estate. Its plum/purple color is followed by a sweet perfume of camphor, blackcurrants, lead pencil shavings, Christmas fruitcake and hints of forest floor and underbrush. Deep, round and generous with silky tannins and a forward, evolved style, this beauty should drink well for years. 93 WA 6 bts. (OWC) per lot $4,000 - $4,600 SCARECROW CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007 Scarecrow s inky/purple-colored 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a prodigious effort. It reveals a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with a smorgasbord of spring flower, blueberry, creme de cassis, and assorted blue, black, and red fruit characteristics. It also possesses extraordinary concentration, but what sets it apart is the fragrant aromatics combined with uncommon purity and elegance for such a full-bodied, massively concentrated wine. Its perfect balance suggests it can be drunk at a relatively young age, but it should easily evolve over years. Congratulations to all involved! 97 WS 100 WA 3 bts. (OWC) per lot $2,700 - $3, SCREAMING EAGLE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1999 The bottled 1999 (a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc) is as profound as I predicted a year and a half ago. It boasts an opaque purple color along with a gorgeously pure nose of creme de cassis, charcoal, and floral characteristics. The wine is opulent, dense, and rich, with exceptional purity, a viscous texture, and impressive underlying tannin that frames its large but elegant personality. Not surprisingly, this is a candidate for the wine of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: WS 97 WA 3 bts. Washington. The Leonetti 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon - which incorporates some Merlot and Carmenere along with a smidgeon of Malbec - surprisingly evinces blueberry as well as cassis and cherry, in sweet but neither cooked nor confitured fashion, shadowed by suggestions of their high-toned, distilled counterparts. Ginger, cinnamon, toasted pecan, black tea and mint accents add to the appeal of lush fruit on a finely-tannic, full-bodied (14.6% alcohol) yet buoyant palate, and this finishes with an invigoratingly tart fruit skin edge and positively vibrant "ping" of sheer juiciness and energy that leave one's attention focused on a quivering tongue and the next sip. What a terrific example of how to achieve richness and sweetness of fruit while remaining fleet of foot! This beauty is unlikely to take a misstep for at least the next years. 95 WA 6 bts. per lot $800 - $ LEONETTI CELLAR RESERVE 2009 Walla Walla. Columbia Valley. The wine known simply as Leonetti 2009 Reserve is, in fact, 92% Cabernet Sauvignon (the rest Merlot), a major departure from the norm of two-thirds to three quarters established in its previous eleven vintages (other exceptions being 2000 and 2001 when the Cabernet share dipped to less than half). Interestingly, too, Petit Verdot vines have contributed a significant share of each earlier Reserve bottling since their first crop, 2000, but this year dropped out on account of having been hit by the late frost. While at 14.7% virtually identical in alcohol to the corresponding Cabernet Sauvignon bottling, this 2009 Reserve comes off as significantly fuller-bodied. It also misses the vibrancy of its ostensibly lesser sibling. "For the reserve," notes Chris Figgins, "we look for lots that are more backward and brooding," and he certainly was rewarded this year. 95 WA 6 bts. per lot $1,000 - $1, LEONETTI CELLAR CABERNET SAUVIGNON WALLA WALLA VALLEY 2008 Columbia Valley. I did not expect the 2003 Chateau Margaux to show this well in a vintage where the southern part of the Medoc was clearly less impressive than the north. However, it is a beautiful, dark plum/purple-tinged effort with sensational aromatics, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a youthfulness, precision and freshness that belie what one generally associates with this vintage. It can be drunk now and over the next years. Kudos to Chateau Margaux. 95 WS 98 WA 6 bts. per lot $4,100 - $4,700 CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 2005 Margaux. 1er Cru Classé The first-growth 2005 Château Margaux (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot), a lavish fragrance of blackcurrants, velvety new saddle leather, spring flowers and spice soars from the glass. The wood is already totally concealed beneath the cascade of fruit in this medium to full-bodied, pure and majestic wine. This concentrated, dense, but nevertheless strikingly elegant, multi-layered wine has a finish of 45+ seconds. It builds incrementally to a crescendo and finale. This is a stunner that can be approached already, but promises to be better in another 5-10 years and last at least 25 or more years. 97 WS 98 WA 6 bts. per lot $5,200 - $6, CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 2000 Perhaps the most beautiful packaging ever on a Bordeaux bottle, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild literally produced a work of art in the gold-engraved bottle of 2000 Mouton Rothschild. I gave it an anticipated maturity range of back in 2003, and that looks on target. 93 WS 96 WA 3 bts. per lot $5,400 - $6, CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 2008 Pomerol. It is hard to call Petrus a sleeper of the vintage, but the 2008 will merit more attention than most consumers would think. Low yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare resulted in only 25,000 bottles of this beauty. A wine of great intensity (possibly the most concentrated wine of the vintage), this 100% Merlot boasts a dark purple color as well as a sweet perfume of mocha, caramel, black cherries, black currants, earth and forest floor. Deep, unctuously textured, full-bodied and pure, it will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring and should drink well for years. 93 WS 97 WA 4 bts. per lot $9,500 - $11,000 CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 2009 Pomerol. An opulent Petrus very much in the stylistic family of the 1990, this 100% Merlot has a dense plum/purple color and a sweet nose of mulberries, black cherries, some subtle toast and licorice as well as a floral element. A wine of great intensity, a multidimensional mouthfeel and full-bodied, stunning concentration, the 2009 Petrus is everything one would expect of it. Given the sweetness of its tannin, much like the 1990, I suspect this wine will always be open for business, appealing even in its youth. Anticipated maturity: WS 100 WA 6 bts. per lot $19,900 - $23, CHÂTEAU LAFITE-ROTHSCHILD bts. per lot $3,500 - $4, CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION 1994 Pessac-Léognan. 1er Cru Classé The color is deep plum/ruby with a bit of lightening at the edge. Notes of compost, truffle, earth, spice box, dried herbs, and licorice compete with sweet black cherry and currant fruit. The wine is mediumbodied, with a relatively plump, chewy feel to it. It is certainly one of the top half dozen or so wines of the vintage. The tannins are still there, but the wine seems far more accessible than the two bigger wines that Haut Brion produced in 1995 and Anticipated maturity: Last tasted, 11/ WA 8 bts. per lot $3,000 - $3, CHÂTEAU LATOUR 1994 It exhibits an opaque dark ruby/purple color, and a backward, intense textbook nose of walnut and cassis scents complemented by smoky pain grille notes that build in the glass. This full-bodied, powerful, layered Latour reveals high tannin, but no bitterness or astringency. The superb purity, fabulous precision, and remarkable length should ensure years of longevity. Readers will find more fat, flesh, and glycerin than usual for a young Latour (save for such great vintages as 1982 and 1990), but don't be deceived, this wine requires 8-10 years of cellaring. A virtually perfect effort is the 1997 Sperss (30,000 bottles), which represents the essence of truffles, earth, and black cherries in its striking aromatics and multidimensional, opulent, full-bodied palate. The acidity seems low because of the huge glycerin levels and prodigious concentration of fruit, but I suspect it is normal in the scheme of oenological measurement. This profound wine requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should age well for years. 94 WS 99 WA 4 bts. per lot $2,000 - $2, S. IMPARATO MONTEVETRANO 1994 (1) Campania. S. The 2006 Barolo Bussia reveals a multitude of balsamic, mineral-infused aromas and flavors. Largescaled and dramatic, the Bussia sweeps across the palate, showing off tons of pedigree and sheer class. The Bussia is quite a bit more backward than the Le Coste-Mosconi, and it will require considerable cellaring, but it is a beauty. Flowers, spices and minerals waft out of the glass on the sensual, ethereal finish. I also tasted the Riserva version of this wine, which won t be released for a few years. For now, let me just say the 2006 Riserva is shaping up to be another hugely promising, important wine from Parusso in this vintage. It offers greater freshness than the Castelletto, with notable vibrancy to its generous fruit. The finish is delicate and long, as ethereal aromas linger in the empty glass. The Gramolere was aged predominantly in 500 liter barrels with 15-20% of the juice seeing larger 20-hectoliter barrels. It is one of the finest wines I have tasted from this small, artisanal producer. Layers of black fruit intermingling with mint and graphite, a hint of licorice emanating from the Merlot, gently fanning out and my God, it is incredibly long. It is not like the 1985 Mouton- Rothschild that is so fleshy and generous. Richly sumptuous on the palate, this beautiful, expansive Solaia offers terrific length as well as stunning balance with plenty of style. It is sure to deliver much gratification over the next decade or so. 95 WS 93 WA TENUTA SAN GUIDO SASSICAIA 2001 (1) TENUTA SAN GUIDO SASSICAIA 2003 (1) TENUTA SAN GUIDO SASSICAIA 2007 (1) The 2007 Sassicaia (Cabernet Sauvignon) explodes onto the palate with masses of rich, opulent fruit that caress the palate with gorgeous length and a seamless beauty that is hard to fully capture. Dark wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and herbs develop in the glass. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow-up to the profound While it may lack that wine s freshness, structure and potential longevity, the 2007 is immensely appealing today, and should drink beautifully pretty much out of the gate. That said, Sassicaia is always the most restrained of Bolgheri s heavy hitters. This is a superb effort from Tenuta San Guido. An open, expressive bouquet laced with mint, red berries, roses and spices emerges with superb clarity and balance. The tension between the minerality of the vintage and the rich expression of fruit that is one of the house s hallmarks play off each other beautifully here. The finish is utterly exquisite in its beguiling beauty. The 2008 isn t the most powerful Oreno ever made, but it is quite possibly the most elegant, impeccably refined wine I have ever tasted here. Simply put, it is fabulous juice! In 2008 the percentage of Sangiovese is way down and Oreno is predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, a decision that has paid off handsomely. Still backward with a deep ruby/plum color revealing only a touch of lightening at the edge, the wine offers up an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs, smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and earth. The gorgeous aromatics are followed by a fullbodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low acidity. With 6-8 hours decanting in a closed decanter, it will offer beautiful drinking, but it needs another 5-8 years to reach full maturity. It is capable of lasting years. The wine offers majestic blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with kirsch, licorice and subtle Provencal herbs in the background. It is akin to chewing meat in the mouth given its viscosity and thickness. This utterly amazing wine comes close to being over the top, but it pulls back just in time. Still inky colored, it has a powerful, slightly backward feel in its crushed rocks, cassis, kirsch, toasted spice, licorice and dried flower-like aromas and flavors. Massively concentrated, thick, rich and textured, it delivers a serious lashing of tannin, yet nevertheless is perfectly balanced, ultra-pure, precise and long. It's the quintessential Clos des Papes and will have 30+ years of longevity. Inky colored, it offers up extraordinary aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, black cherry, crushed rocks, spring flowers and melted licorice to go with a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, dense and layered profile on the palate. Very fullbodied, like the 2001, but much more lavishly fruited, it is more accessible and hedonistically, as well as intellectually, satisfying. If the 2001 is the longdistance runner, this comes across more like a middle-distancer. This stunning, inky/plum/purple-tinged 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection boasts a glorious fragrance of creme de cassis, licorice, toasty oak, spice box, cassis and vanillin. Full-bodied, opulent, flashy and irresistible, this endearing, plush, exuberant, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon is 3-5 years away from full maturity, yet it is already complex and rewarding. It should last for another two decades. 96 WA CAYMUS CABERNET SAUVIGNON SPECIAL SELECTION 2003 (2) Napa Valley. Current vintages of the luxury cuvee, the Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection, are bottled much earlier than in the past and they remain one of Napa s most classic Cabernets. The 2003 s opaque purple color suggests a wine much younger than ten years of age. Copious amounts of creme de cassis, graphite, spice box and a whiff of new saddle leather result in a classic, authoritative, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with no hard edges. This big, mouthfilling, textured, multidimensional Cabernet still tastes like an adolescent, and is capable of lasting another years. Some tannins are present, but their sweetness along with the wine s voluptuous character are irresistible. Structurally, it is similar to the Piggott Range, revealing abundant amounts of sweet, ripe tannin, and huge extract, richness, and depth. Meant for true connoisseurs who are willing to forget it for 5-8 years, it represents what Roman Bratasiuk and Clarendon Hills do so well... show respect for the great traditions of France, but recognize the extraordinary raw materials that emerge from old vines planted in McLaren Vale. This fabulous wine offers both power and elegance, and showcases the extraordinary talent of Roman Bratasiuk. Anticipated maturity: WS 99 WA CLARENDON HILLS ASTRALIS SHIRAZ 2005 (1) McLaren Vale. At the top of the pyramid is the 2005 Syrah Astralis Vineyard. It is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1920 and is one of the Syrah cuvees in which 100% new oak is utilized (along with Brookman, Hickinbotham, and Piggott Range). It delivers an ethereal bouquet of smoky oak, violets, espresso, black pepper, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Densely packed and tightly wound, all it needs is time. The wine is totally harmonious, impeccably balanced, and exceptionally long. When it fully unwinds, even my high rating will appear conservative. Its only competition comes from the likes of Guigal, Chapoutier, Chave, Krankl, and Ringland. 96 WS 99 WA 3 bts. per lot $600 - $900 CLARENDON HILLS ASTRALIS SHIRAZ 1998 (1) McLaren Vale. A sensational wine, the 1998 Syrah Astralis is a candidate for perfection. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as a big, complex, sweet perfume of charcoal, spring flowers, blackberry liqueur, roasted meats, and damp, forest floor-like notes. Enormously endowed, with good acid, backstrapping tannin levels, fabulous concentration, and a layered mouthfeel, it is beginning to throw off some of its closed, impenetrable personality. A long-termer, it needs another 5-7 years to fully open, and should last for 2-3 decades thereafter. 98 WA CLARENDON HILLS ASTRALIS SHIRAZ 2001 (1) McLaren Vale. The 2001 Syrah Astralis Vineyard may be just as compelling as the Tighter because of being in the bottle, it is an extraordinary effort that offers the essence of graphite, blackberry liqueur, espresso, and acacia flowers, all combining into an olfactory smorgasbord for the senses. Sensationally concentrated, with sweet tannin, but neither weighty nor over the top as might be expected for a wine of such extreme richness, it is an extraordinarily welldelineated Syrah that should hit its prime in years, and last for Hail Caesar... I mean Roman! 92 WS 99 WA CLARENDON HILLS ASTRALIS SHIRAZ 2004 (1) McLaren Vale. One of Australia s most prodigious Syrahs, Clarendon Hills 2004 Syrah Astralis is fashioned from vines planted in 1920, and spends time in 100% new French oak from the cooper, Cadus. It boasts off the charts intensity as well as an opaque purple color, and notes of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, roasted coffee beans, pepper, smoke, and a hint of sweet toasty oak. This full-bodied, rich, intense, backward Syrah needs 2-3+ hours in the decanter if one is going to approach it at this point in its life. 30 Conditions of sale fine Wine & fine spirits auctions 1. Waddington s conducts auctions of fine wine and rare spirits as agent for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (the LCBO ) and all such auctions are authorized by the LCBO. All auction sales shall be deemed to take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. 2. All purchasers of alcoholic beverages through an auction must be nineteen (19) years of age or older. Proof of age may be required prior to the transfer of any purchased goods, including, but not limited provision of photo identification. 3. All lots are sold AS IS. Any description issued by the auctioneer of an article to be sold is subject to variation to be posted or announced verbally in the auction room prior to the time of sale. While the auctioneer has endeavoured not to mislead in the description issued, and the utmost care is taken to ensure the correct cataloguing of each item, such descriptions are purely statements of opinion and are not intended to constitute a representation to the prospective purchasers and no warranty of the correctness of such description is made. No opportunity of inspection is offered prior to the time of sale. No sale will be set aside on account of lack of correspondence of the article with its description or its reproduction, if any, whether colour or black & white. Some lots are of an age and/or nature which preclude their being in pristine condition and some catalogue descriptions make reference to damage and/or restoration. The lack of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects nor does any reference to certain defects imply the absence of others. 4. Each lot sold is subject to a buyer s premium of 20% of the successful bid price as part of the purchase price. 5. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay Harmonized Sales Tax on the total purchase price including the buyer s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of country. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid, may not be recognized. 8. Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. As previously agreed to as between the auctioneer and the consignor, the auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid. In addition, the auctioneer may accept and submit absentee and telephone bids, to be executed by an employee of the auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale. 9. The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders the auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The auctioneer s decision in all cases shall be final. 10. The auctioneer will notify the successful buyer that they have won the bid. 11. The buyer shall pay for all lots within 48 hours from the date of the sale, after which a late charge of 2% per month on the total invoice may be incurred or the auctioneer, in his sole discretion, may cancel the sale. The buyer shall not become the owner of the lot until paid for in full. Items must be removed within 30 days from the date of sale, after which storage charges will be incurred at a rate of $4.00 per case per month. 12. Each lot purchased, unless the sale is cancelled as above, shall be held by the auctioneer at his premises or affiliated storage facility at the sole risk of the buyer until fully paid for and taken away. 13. Notwithstanding Section 3, if the buyer, prior to removal of a lot, makes arrangements satisfactory to the auctioneer for the inspection of such lot by a fully qualified person acceptable to the auctioneer to determine the genuineness or authenticity of the lot, to be carried out promptly following the sale of the lot, and if, but only if, within a period of 14 days following the sale a written opinion of such person is presented to the auctioneer to the effect that the lot is not genuine or authentic, accompanied by a written request by the buyer for rescission of the sale, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the sale price refunded to the buyer. 14. Payment for purchases must be by INTERAC direct debit (applicable to Canadian in-person clients only), certified cheque (not applicable to U.S. and international sales), travelers cheque, bank draft, electronic transfer (fee applies), and VISA or Mastercard (up to $25,000). 15.
