1 Springfield, Missouri May/June, 2005 Volume 10 No Wine Spectator, Wine of the Year! 1998 Ornellaia A big juicy red. Black, with intense aromas of black olives and sage, plus masses of fruit. Full-bodied and very velvety, with a long, long finish. A magical Masseto? The best yet Merlot. 2,580 cases made. Wine Spectator, rated 97/ Jean Thevenet s Remarkable 2001 Domaine de la Bongran Macon Villages Cuvee Tradition Thévenet crafts wines of unbelievable depth, complexity, and concentration Thévenet is making highly acclaimed wines that are out of the ordinary far and away Clessé s top producer. The 2001 Mâcon- Villages Tradition (Domaine de la Bongran), however, is even better than I predicted a year ago. It bursts from the glass with deep, spicy aromas of herbal teas. This rich, light to medium-bodied wine is packed with liquefied rocks, resin-laced minerals, and pears. Flint can be found in its long, highly expressive, supple finish. Projected maturity: now Robert Parker, rated 91/ JEAN THEVENET, PROPRIETOR & WINEMAKER info@brownderby.com PG. 1

3 Sauvignon Blanc THE GRAPE THAT S COMING ON STRONG! Sauvignon Blanc Oz Clark s colorful and endlessly useful Encyclopedia of Wine describes Sauvignon as a grape that wears its heart on its sleeve. It s wine is sharp, green and tangy, reeking of newly-mown grass, crushed nettles and blackcurrant leaves, clear, clean and refreshing. He goes on to state that this is a classic description of Sauvignon from the Loire Valley - Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume and Touraine, specifically. Bordeaux whites are usually less intense and grassy but equally refreshing with an abundantly sunny, food-friendly personality. Examples from New Zealand, especially the Marlborough region of the south island, emphasize a pungent gooseberry and tropical fruitiness. California versions quite often reflect the rich, round, fatter, sometimes oak-aged, vanilla sweetness of the ubiquitous New World style, obscuring the grassy tang of the French. Regardless of the style you prefer, you will find a vast selection from which to choose this issue at Brown Derby. Here are but a few choices. -California Babcock Ranch Eleven Oaks Beaulieu Vineyards Century Cellars Beaulieu Vineyards Coastal Beringer Napa Valley Bernardus Bogle Vineyards Cakebread Cakebread...half Chateau Souverain N/V Dry Creek Fumé Blanc Duckhorn Vineyards Foley Frog s Leap Geyser Peak Groth Honig Kendall-Jackson Vintner s Reserve Kenwood Matanzas Creek Murphy Goode Fumé Blanc Ojai Vineyards Robert Mondavi Private Selection Simi Stephen Vincent Maxwell Vineyard Oregon Andrew Rich Croft Vineyard France Delaporte Sancerre Delaporte Sancerre Cuvée Maxime Domaine Caillebourdin Pouilly-Fumé Cuvée de Boisfleury Domaine Caillebourdin Pouilly-Fumé Cuvée les Cris Domaine Dagueneau Pouilly-Fumé En Chailloux Domaine Dagueneau Pouilly-Fumé Silex Laporte Sancerre Tortoise Creek Chile Concha y Toro Terrunyo Luis Felipe Edwards Veramonte New Zealand Blind River Marlborough Drylands Marlborough Highfield Estate Marlborough Huia Vineyards Marlborough Jackson Estate Marlborough Kim Crawford Marlborough Lawson s Dry Hills Marlborough Matua Valley Marlborough Nautilus Marlborough Neudorf Marlborough Nobilo Icon South Africa Mulderbosch Stellenbosch Washington Chateau Ste. 4 Concha y Toro s Terrunyo This year we recommended all four Terrunyo wines. Consider the 01 Terrunyo Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from old vines facing the Maipo River in Pirque, at the feet of Los Andes Cordillera, this is elegant, finely drawn Cabernet, spicy and firm, offering the kind of sophistication you can expect from Alto Maipo at its best. The 03 Terrunyo Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and brisk, with an underlying muscularity MARCELO PAPA, WINEMAKER, CONCHA Y TORO that s surprising to find in a Sauvignon. Made from grapes grown at the El Triangulo vineyard in close to the Pacific Ocean, it s a benchmark Chilean Sauvignon. Finally, there s Carmenère. Grown at a vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley s Peumo region, from vines planted in the mid-eighties, it s round and ripe, full of luscious fruit, yet balanced by the spice and herb notes brought by a cool, moderate year such as 2001 one of the best Chilean harvest in the past decade. Wine & Spirits 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere Dark, deep red. Intense hints of berries, chocolate, cigar box pepper and mineral notes. Tasty and full-bodied: Elegant powerful and lingering in the mouth Sauvignon Blanc A bright pale greenish yellow. Fresh and mineral aroma, with straw notes. Concentrated. Gooseberries aromas. Fresh flavours with firm acidity, savvy, flinty, honeysuckle. Elegant great body, long persistence Sauvignon Blanc Palmaz Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley A deep, complex aroma of dark fruit, toasty oak and exotic spices, with generous amounts of supple, approachable tannins. The flavors integrate smoothly from attack to finish, promising great aging potential and development this decade and beyond. For the 2001 Palmaz, winemaker Randy Dunn used fruit from vineyards planted on the slopes of Mount George on the southern end of the valley. The property once produced award-winning wines, including a silver medal at the Paris Exposition, but sat vacant for decades until Julio and Amalia Palmaz bought the land. Dunn uses small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in the blend. The result is a heavyweight Cabernet with power to age for more than a decade Note of Interest: The revolutionary Palmaz stent, invented by Julio Palmaz, M.D., is listed as one of the 10 Patents That Changed the World in the August issue of IP Worldwide magazine. Stents are now used in 2 million patients annually to repair clogged arteries near the heart and elsewhere in the body. Dr. Palmaz gained a U.S. patent on the stent in April The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted approval for use in cardiac arteries in RANDY DUNN, WINEMAKER JULIO & ARMALIA PALMAZ PG. 4 Phone FAX

5 Williams Selyem New Arrivals Williams Selyem Winery began as a simple dream between two friends, Ed Selyem and Burt Williams, who pursued weekend winemaking as a hobby in 1979 in a garage in Forestville, California, and made their first commercial vintage in In less than two decades, Burt & Ed created a cult status winery of international acclaim. Together they set a new standard for Pinot Noir winemaking in the United States, aligning Sonoma County s Russian River Valley in the firmament of the best winegrowing regions of the world. Today John and Kathe Dyson, who purchased the winery from Burt and Ed in 1998, carry on the passion for Pinot Noir winemaking without compromise Russian River Valley Pinot Noir Truly a favorite blend of mine. It is usually one of the most challenging, yet the most rewarding and pleasurable blends to assemble. The nose is reminiscent of blackberries, plums, toffee and crème brulee. The rich/full tannins accentuate the blackberry/plumy fruits and complement the creamy, silky finish. The rich concentration of berries is added from the new blocks of fruit from our estate vineyard. This wine truly expresses the classic finesse and depth of complexity that you would expect from Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Bob Cabrale Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir The wild berry, sweet herbs, wild flowers and mocha nose make this a classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Your mouth will explode with flavors of wild berries, cranberries, toasted nut bread, white pepper, cardamom and citrus rind. Rich tannins and acidity balance out the ripe wild berry flavors and fresh herbs. The long, lingering finish completes this wonderful experience. Bob Cabrale BOB CABRALE, WINEMAKER 2003 Central Coast Pinot Noir The ripe fruit offers a wonderful perfumed nose of black cherries, rose petal and nutmeg. The bright cherry/strawberry nose, with a hint of truffle, spice, ripe plums, cardamom, toffee and cola are classic to this vineyard site. Your mouth will water with flavors of wild cherries, strawberries, sassafras, berries and truffles. Having worked with these vineyard blocks for 7 years, I find that the balanced acidity helps to carry the rich and round tannins that follow through long into the finish. 6 Magical Me Highly Recommen 2001 J. Kirkwood Merlot Simply Outstanding! DANIEL BARON, WINEMAKER (DANIEL IS ALSO THE WINE- MAKER AT SILVER OAK VINEYARDS) J. Kirkwood Merlot 2001 was made using grapes from Ken Laird s Rutherford vineyard and Larry Hyde s Carneros vineyard. It has a rich color and a nose of jam and black cherries. The tannins are silky and the oak is well integrated. It should drink well for several years. J. Kirkwood wines are made using traditional barrel-to-barrel racking techniques without filtration or fining. The philosophy of winemaking is patterned after the time honored methods of the small, closely attended chateaux of Pomerol. Leonetti Cellars Merlot Gary Figgins may make killer Cabs, but this magnificent Merlot is, to put it plainly, the most focused, deep, bright, and fully flavored Merlot I have ever had, from anywhere! Northwest palate by Cole Danehower GARY FIGGINS, PROPRIETOR & WINEMAKER 2002 Merlot Merlot Arietta Merlot Hudson Lush, creamy and impressively rich, with superb depth of flavor for California Merlot. Highly complex flavors of currant, tobacco, iron, graphite and spices ( pencil shavings and rusty nails, offers Kongsgaard). An exceptionally classy Merlot that finishes with serious but utterly suave tannins and outstanding persistence. Steve Tanzer, rated 93-95/100 JOHN KONGSGAARD, WINEMAKER 2001 Swanson Merlot From a winery that seldom stumbles, a lush, sexy Merlot. Its cassis, unsweetened chocolate and oak flavors are wrapped in chewy tannins that make your tongue stick to the gums. It s a young, dramatic wine. Drink now, with roast duck or pork tenderloin. 7 erlot nded! 2002 Tamarack Cellars Merlot This wine is an oak bomb, big, round and irresistible. It s polished by sumptuous wood elements, rendered in aromas of chocolate, maple and smoke. Black cherry fruit lies beneath, and will meld with the oak as the wine ages. Wine & Spirits, Rated 90/100 RON COLEMAN, PROPRIETOR & WINEMAKER Reininger Merlot This elegant Walla Walla Merlot is extremely concentrated with flavors of chocolate and spice. Velvety currant and cocoa-espresso flavors reveal lush black currant and plum, while mingling in exotic brown spice. Spring Valley, Pepper Bridge, CHUCK REININGER, PROPRIETOR & WINEMAKER Seven Hills and Ash Hollow Vineyards. 91.5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.5% Cabernet Franc cases produced Duckhorn Merlot Napa The Napa Valley Merlot is blended to offer the complexity and balance of a young wine. 9 2003 Georges DubŒuf BEAUJOLAIS Bottled Sun -The Wine Advocate GEORGES DUBŒUF Georges Dubœuf, who has vast experience, unequivocally says 2003 is the greatest vintage for Beaujolais in my lifetime, better than , and Yes, 1976 was great, but harder and drier, 1947 was stunning, but we know how to do things better now, and have superb equipment that did not exist then. Therefore, more great 2003s were produced than 1947s. Only 10% of the 1947s were exceptional. No, 2003 may be the best ever. Readers may wish to re-read those words, knowing they were spoken by a man who pulls no punches and who has bluntly stated when vintages were poor in the past. When Georges Dubœuf says something, he means it. Beaujolais, Chateau de Varennes The 2003 Beaujolais-Villages Chateau de Varennes had been bottled immediately prior to the tasting and appeared to be suffering from it, hence the plus by its score. Its primary, youthfully tight fruit is ungenerous. Light to mediumbodied, it displays notes of raspberries and cherries that should flesh out with a couple of months of bottle age. Drink it over the next 4 years. Rated 85/100, Robert Parker Regnie Domaine des Buyats The highly impressive, potentially outstanding, 2003 Regnie Domaine des Buyats boasts a nose of candied cherries. Concentrated and well-extracted, it bastes the taster s mouth with copious quantities of extraordinary ripe black fruits, spices and powdered sugar. Rated 89-91/100, Wine Advocate Chiroubles Domaine Desmures Flowers are found in the aromatic profile of the 2003 Chiroubles Domaine Desmures. Light to medium-bodied, elegant, and detailed, this delightful wine reveals excellent depth to its black cherry-dominated personality. Soft, fruitpacked, and suave, it is a candidate for drinking over the next five years. Rated 88-89/100, Wine Advocate Fleurie Domaine des Quatre Vents Violets, roses and black cherries can be detected in the demure aromas of the 2003 Fleurie Domaine des Quatre Vents. Medium-bodied, it seductively bastes the palate with copious quantities of black cherries, blackberries, cassis, and spices. Seamless, fresh, rich, and concentrated, it is a velvety-textured wine armed with outstanding depth and concentration. Rated 91-92/100, Wine Advocate Moulin-A-Vent Domaine des Rosiers Candied red fruits can be detected in the aromatic profile of the fresh, lush 2003 Moulin-A-Vent Domaine des Rosiers. This sensual effort displays loads of red cherries, raspberries, and strawberries in its sultry, deep personality. Wellbalanced and concentrated, this spicy wine is a candidate for drinking over the next 6 years. Rated 90-92/100, Wine Advocate Moulin-A-Vent Domaine de la Tour de Bief Reminiscent of chunky Gevrey-Chambertin, the 2003 Moulin-A-Vent Domaine de la Tour de Bief displays leather, black cherry, and blackberry aromas. It reveals outstanding power, density of fruit, concentration, extraction, and along, edge-free finish. While it lacks harmony and sensuality of Duboeuf s more sultry, generous 2003s, this wine has the potential to come together in the final stages of élevage and make my score look ridiculously conservative. Rated /100, Wine Advocate The reds of Beaujolais are the greatest I ve experienced, let me stress that Wine Advocate info@brownderby.com PG. 9

10 2003 Bordeaux En Premier It s not every day that you find seductive Bordeaux. The best 2003s are certainly that. They remind me of 1990, 1989 and 1982, all hot vintages that produced rich, exotic wines with ripe tannins and generous fruit Wine Spectator From the region s hottest summer and earliest harvest in more than a century what I found was nothing less than a miracle of nature. Stephen Tanzer From the first taste of AC Bordeaux to the last sip, I don t think I have had a more interesting en primeur experience. 12 Joh. Jos. Prûm is, of course, one of the most highly regarded names in all of German winemaking and definitely one of the most recognized names here in the American market. 13 rman Wines The vineyard of the Berncasteler Doctor represents the finest tradition of grape growing. For centuries great Rieslings have been produced from this vineyard. According to legend, the Doctor vineyard was given its name in 1360 by Archbishop Boemond II of Trier when, after his doctor had given up hope on his health, he regained his strength and drank himself healthy by drinking wine from this vineyard. The climb to the top of the Doctor vineyard is about 200 steps with a breath taking view of Berncastel and the surrounding vineyards. 15 Stephen Vincent Wines Extraordinary Wines For the Money! STEPHEN VINCENT SITURN AND TOM GOYETTE, WINEMAKER & PARTNER 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon California This fine wine is produced from a blend of grapes from two specific areas Monterey and Sonoma County. Deep dark ruby color, with hints of blackberry and cassis flavors. Ripe fruit, soft tannins and a touch of toasty French oak bring out the richness of this excellent Cabernet Merlot California The combination and percentages of grape varietals used in this blend are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet. French oak is used in this varietal as well to add complexity to the overall blend. Bright dark ruby color, with flavors of plum and berry. Good forward fruit in the mouth with balanced flavors of fruit and oak as this fine Merlot unveils its medium bodied richness Pinot Noir Monterey County Fruit from previous vintages was sold to a number of top Pinot Noir producers including David Bruce and Williams Selyem. Beautiful ruby color. Blackberry with hints of clove and spice. Great forward fruit and soft tannins make this wine very accessible. Rich delicious mouth feel. Beautifully balanced with a long finish Sauvignon Blanc Lake County Grapes from this vineyard yield intense fruit flavors, characteristic of the very best Sauvignon Blanch. The wine is made from a blend of 95% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Chardonnay. Sauvignon Blanc captures the fruit flavors and solid acid structure, while the Chardonnay adds rich body to the final blend to ensure excellent balance between the two varietals. This is both a complex and refreshing wine to drink. William Chambers These singular treasures from Australia should not be missed! Robert Parker...they may be the finest fortified wines in the world. Robert Parker William Chambers s offerings, which are among the greatest fortified whites in the world, basically elicit the same comments as well as nearly identical scores every year. I was simply going to write blah, blah, blah, blah but I thought that might not be sufficient for new readers who have not seen my tasting notes in the past. The real values are the inexpensive Muscat and Muscadelle. The Muscadelle (Tokay) exhibits a light amber color as well as a gorgeous fragrance, and plenty of honey and molasses characteristics in a full-bodied, unctuous style. The Muscat is even better, offering a rose/amber color followed by notes of black tea. This sexy effort is the equivalent of liquid viagra. Full-bodied and opulent, these two cuvées average 10 years in age. The two Grand cuvées average 70 years in age. The dark amber-colored Grand Muscadelle (Tokay) possesses scents of caramel, toffee, figs, molasses, and black tea. The Grand Muscat reveals more orange marmalade notes. It is an incredibly unctuous, sweet, thick wine, but, like its siblings, it is neither heavy nor cloying because of good underlying acidity. The non-vintage rare Muscat and Rare Muscadelle are off any earthly chart in terms of richness and intensity. The major component in these fortifieds date from The Rare Muscadelle (Tokay) is a thick, unctuous, brown sugar-imbued fruit bomb revealing notes of balsamic vinegar intermixed with a smorgasbord of heavenly delights including caramel, melted toffee, maple syrup, and Asian spices. It must be tasted to be believed. The Rare Muscat may be even better, but the system stops at 100 points. It is equally rich, profound, concentrated, and unctuous, with explosive aromatic fireworks. 16 French Values Under Sevier Wines Good Wine, Great Value and Tradition Sevier brings classic wines from the heart of France. French connoisseurs search out small producers lost in the countryside. They have long recognized the quality and craftsmanship of regional wine producers. Now Sevier brings them to America. These small family operations have limited production; yet they share the fine grapes, climate, and skilled wine-making traditions of the large estates. Take the opportunity to discover and appreciate this artistry Ch. Jeanguillon Bordeaux Superieur 2003 Ch. des Chapelains Sainte Foy Bordeaux Sec Five generations of the Pommier Family have been producing wine on 80 hectares (about 200 acres) of vineyard. The family makes both red and white wines for which the property has been winning awards since Everything the Bordeaux wines are known for - depth, complexity and flavor; this is an elegantly traditional Bordeaux wine. Pierre Charlot oversees a vineyard of 35 hectares that has been in his family since the 17th century. This is a delicious white, with the body and richness of a fine white Graves for a great price! Prelude Sec is pale in color with an aromatic nose marked by honey and vanilla; it is a wine of round, persistent length, very rich Ch. la Roberterie Bordeaux Superieur Ch. Courtade-Dubuc Premiere Cotes de Bordeaux Château La Roberterie is a family-owned estate of 11 hectares on the slopes of Juillac, a little village near Saint-Émilion. Alfred and Maïte Pantarotto strive to produce a full bodied, fruity and elegant wine. Freddie is the third generation of his family to steward this property. Really, really nice! Hubert Daron and his family have been producing wine on ten hectares (about 20 acres) of land since They hand pick and sort their grapes and use traditional methods of vinification. Hubert thinks these all are essential to making his wine the best in the district. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. These wines are largely Merlot-dominated that can make great drinking around six years old PG. 16 Phone FAX

18 Pierre Ferrand Small Batch Prestige Cognac Located in the heart of Cognac s finest Cognac district, Grande Champagne, Ferrand s meticulous attention to detail and commitment to excellence has been widely recognized by Wine and Spirit writers worldwide. Space precludes us from detailing all the extraordinary steps that Ferrand takes to produce these superb cognacs; however, these examples are worth noting. Only grapes grown in Grande Champagne go into all of Ferrand s blends. Although French law requires that an XO designation be only 6 years old and lower designations, VS, VSOP, etc are even younger, the youngest Ferrand blend is 10 years old and others average years. At bottling, each bottle is rinsed with cognac rather than water before it is filled. All of these cognacs boast that very rare distinction of balancing very rich flavors while being elegant and complex at the same time. You simply will never get a disappointing bottle of wine from Bize- Leroy. 22 2002 California Reds Arriving Daily In contrast to the long 2001 growing season, 2002 experienced a hotter, shorter growing period that produced very concentrated, powerful, exuberant, robust, full-throttle, obviously California-styled wines. They are neither over the top nor excessively alcoholic, but are extremely rich as well as forward 2002 was an exciting vintage, with wines of exceptional ripeness, richness, and extraordinarily expressive personalities. It may be a more in-your-face year than 2001, but it looks to be a return to the glory days of the early nineties when California s finest producers could do no wrong. It is always difficult making comparisons with other vintages, but if 2001 is a modern day version of 1994 and 1991, 2002 may be the equivalent of 1995, 1990, or Robert Parker JAYSON WOODBRIDGE, PROPRIETOR OF HUNDRED ACRE 2002 Arietta Variations One Rated 95/100, Robert Parker Rated 94-96/100, Steve Tanzer 2002 Arietta Merlot Hudson Rated 93-95/100, Steve Tanzer 2002 Barbour Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon...Please Inquire 2002 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon...mag Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon (Special Selection) David Arthur Cabernet Sauvignon Rated 93-94/100,Wine Spectator 2002 David Arthur Meritaggio Diamond Creek Gravelly Meadow We are very excited about the 2002 vintage, their Thirtieth Anniversary. Low yields, indigenous yeast fermentations, malolactic in barrel, and no clarification result in wines that stand the test of time, as evidenced by just about everything Togni has produced. Before Philip Togni created his own estate vineyard, he made the greatest wines ever produced under the Chappellet label (1969 is still a monument to the ageworthiness of California Cabernet Sauvignon). He has been turning out extraordinary offerings at his own estate since the early eighties. He was not happy with his 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, and made it clear that despite a severe selection, what I was tasting was a much lighter style than he preferred. The 2002 may merit an outstanding score, but due to Togni s dedication to producing exceptional wines, it may also be declassified. Although it is light by Togni s standards, it is not a lightweight. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of tobacco leaf intermixed with hints of Provençal herbs, black currants, licorice, and incense. Medium-bodied, with ripe tannin, it is an excellent, possibly outstanding effort, but not as complete as Togni would like. 29 JAPAN S Finest Premium Saké Hand-crafted by Small, Ancient, Family-run Japanese Brewers Saké, often called the Drink of the Gods by the Japanese, is a beverage created from rice, water, kiji, and yeast, usually with an alcohol content of 15%-16%, just slightly higher than that of an average wine. Saké is brewed like a beer, but it is served and enjoyed like a fine wine. Premium saké is usually served lightly chilled, while lower grades of saké are often served warm. The saké we are talking about here is more specifically referred to as Junmai-shu or chilled, ultra-premium, pure rice saké not the boiled, cheap stuff that has (unfortunately) been served to Americans in small, ceramic carafes for decades. When we tasted these saké for the first time, we were floored. These were glasses full of complex, aromatic, thought-provoking, pleasure-inducing liquids. They are created from premium saké rice, water & koji, without using distilled alcohol or other additives, and using a painstaking and laborious production process. These products will change the way people think about saké. We have incredible respect and admiration for the results of these brewers efforts. While every one of these brewers has been making saké for over 80 years (and one for 850 years), the category of pure, premium, chilled saké has only been produced in Japan for the last 30 years. In terms of grade or quality, this category represents approximately the top 12% of all saké produced in Japan. They are rare, and they are more expensive than saké produced in the U.S. or Japanese saké produced by the mega-breweries. This is a first time that they have been available in the U.S. Ginga Shizuku - Divine Droplets A prominent fragrance, a clean and fresh taste, with flavor deep into the recesses. Truly one of the Rolls-Royces of saké. Sato no Homare - Pride of the Village An elegant, super-premium saké. A pleasingly light and fruity nose, laced with violets, strawberries, pear and grape, a refined and clear flavor, yet settled and deep. Semi-dry with a superbly clean finish. Takatenjin - Shrine of the Village A clean and dry saké with a bit of richness in the recesses and a crisp finish. Tentaka Kuni - Hawk in the Heavens A mature well-rounded flavor with a settled fragrance. Dry but with an underlying richness. Drier and lighter when chilled, and a bit fuller as it warms. Mantensai - Star-filled Sky Soft, honey-laced nose with just a tad of fruitiness. Dry overall, but with a sweet element creeping out of the background. Good richness and overall balance in a slightly dry profile. Rihaku - Wandering Poet Brewed carefully and slowly at low temperatures using traditional brewing techniques and Yamada Nishiki rice polished to 55%. Characterized by a well-rounded flavor with a solidness to the flavor and fragrance, and a clean finish. Ginginga - Southern Beauty This has an elegant and soft fragrance and a flavor that is reminiscent of pears and muscat grapes. Fukucho - Moon on the Water A rather fragrant junmai ginjo, bottled immediately without charcoal filtering. The fine-lined flavor is as bold as the fragrance, with a soft-edged fullness overall. Shinriki - Sacred Power Enjoy the rich, mellow flavor & deep recesses of this saké. The Magic of Musar Chateau Musar s award-winning and distinctive wines made it through 20 years of Lebanon s civil war, and are now better than ever. Andrew Jefford, Decanter Chateau Musar was established in 1930 by Gaston Hochar in an early 18th century castle at Ghazir, on the slopes or Mt. Lebanon. He installed vats and oak casks in the cool basements where the temperature is ideal for young wines. The capacity was enlarged by creating underground galleries, 15 meters deep. Carved into the mountainside, the galleries hold more than a million bottles of maturing wines. Serge Hocar learned winemaking at the University of Bordeaux under Professor Emile Peynaud. In 1984 he was Decanter Magazine s first-ever Man of the Year. Tasting through the range of vintages is a revelation Ch. Musar Ch. Musar Ch. Musar Ch. Musar Ch. Musar Ch. Musar Ch. Musar Ch. A showy Chardonnay for the money Chardonnay/Viognier Duet Maison Louis Latour s latest wine from the Ardèche region is unique because the two different musts are fermented together. Grapes from late-ripening plots of Chardonnay and early-ripening plots of Viognier are carefully selected before going to the press together. The result is a tantalizing combination of the purity of Viognier and the smoothness of Chardonnay. Fresh citrus, soft apricot and peach fruit aromas on the nose are echoed on the palette to create a delicate, supple and racy wine. 46 Think Pink This Spring & Summer 2003 DOMAINE TEMPIER Bandol Rosé Bandol is a small appellation on the Mediterranean, granted AOC status in For centuries it has produced some of the longest-lived wines in France, using primarily the Mourvèdre grape. Wines from the region have unique aromatic properties which many claim come from the dry Provençal herbs which cover the hillsides: thyme, savory, rosemary, wild mint, and fennel. Domaine Tempier s rosé, considered by many to be the finest in France, is fuller and creamier on the palate and shows dimensions not often found in rosé. Perhaps the addition of young Mourvèdre is responsible, or the Peyraud s allowance for the wine to follow its natural inclination and complete malolactic fermentation. The rosé is a blend of roughly 80% Pinot and 20% Syrah. This pale salmon color rosé possesses fresh strawberry and tart cherry aromas and flavors. The wine is crisp and clean on the pallet with a lingering fruity finish that is nicely balanced with racey acidity. 470 cases Also Available Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose & 2003 Solo Rosa Rosé 2004 COPAIN Saisons des Vins Rosé Le Printemps An equal blend of Sangiovese, Syrah and Merlot-mostly from Napa and Sonoma counties. The 1998 Pétrus is unquestionably a fabulous effort boasting a dense plum/purple color as well as an extraordinary nose of black fruits intermixed with caramel, mocha, and vanilla. 53 rom South America Almaviva (Chile) 2002 Almaviva Almaviva This joint venture between Concha y Toro and Baron Philippe de Rothschild debuted with much fanfare in the 96 vintage. Despite a string of outstanding releases, its high price has held it back from gaining wider consumer acceptance. The 2001 is a brick house of a wine, though, showing plenty of Pauillac-like hints of iron, dried currant and cigar smoke, but it also has layers of Chilean loam, blackberry, plum, spice and minerals. Loads here, and filled out on all sides, this is a powerful performance in a powerful vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Cabernet Franc. The fragrant aromas are of soy, lavender and licorice, while in the mouth, it s pure silk. Production in 1999, due to drought conditions, was 1,400 cases. The Legendary 2001 CHARDONNAY Rated 92/100, Wine Enthusiast First produced in 1952, their Chardonnay is more reminiscent of the Chablis of Burgundy than of today s California Chardonnays. Aged in neutral oak barrels without malolactic fermentation, it is elegant and fruity with beautiful acid structure. As a result, Stony Hill Chardonnays are eminently age worthy and grow in richness and depth for many years after bottling. To introduce you to our 2001 Stony Hill Chardonnay (2958 cases produced), we tasted it against the 1998, 1999 and 2000 vintages, comparing its particular color, nose, mouth feel, fruitiness, weight, acidity, and finish with the others. We all agreed immediately that the 2001 vintage is one of the best- balanced, cleanest wines we have made in recent years! It shows palest straw color, distinctive Chardonnay aromas, intense fruit flavors, notable acidity and the lemon and mineral qualities that are Stony Hill's hallmark. In other words, the 2001 is just what our customers expect when they order our Chardonnay, It's a classic! For those of you familiar with our recent vintages, the 2001 has more concentrated fruit than the 1998, is less weighty, rich and forward than the 1999, and is closest in style to the 2000 but without the slightly toasty nose. The 2001 is clean as a whistle, fresh as a spring breeze and the finish goes on forever. We know you will like this wine. We cannot be held responsible if you request shipment and the wines travel in a climate outside an acceptable temperature range. We will hold and store wine purchases up to 30 days. After that time a 3.00 per case per month charge will be automatically assessed. Any cancellations are subject to a 10 percent restocking penalty. Occasionally, irreplaceable bottles will be broken in shipment or somehow mishandled in the delivery system to us. In the event any wines do not arrive, or are damaged in shipment to us, or are damaged by us prior to shipment to you, we will make every effort to substitute, subject to your approval, wines of equivalent value. Should we be unable to make an acceptable substitution, we will then refund your payment together with 5 percent simple interest. PRSRT STD US POSTAGE PAID GLF PG. 56 Phone FAX
