What makes a certified grapevine clean? While there is no guarantee or warranty that covers each individual vine, all vines in the certification program have passed through the annual filter of that states certification standards. In Washington state, Certified plants must be free of Grapevine fanleaf virus, Grapevine leafroll-associated viruses, Grapevine virus A, Grapevine virus B, Grapevine rupestris stem pitting virus, Arabis mosaic virus, Tomato ringspot virus, Grapevine red blotch virus, Grapevine vein clearing virus, Xylella fastidiosa, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (Grape phylloxera), and Planococcus ficus (Vine Mealybug).
Basic requirements for certified blocks in Washington Site approval and soil sampling for Xiphinema nematodes. Fumigation required before planting if Xiphinema sp. of concern is found. Mother blocks planted with Foundation level material (G1). The department will conduct at least two inspections of registered grapevines during each growing season. Samples are collected and tested at the Clean Plant Center in Prosser. Any vines that test positive for a virus of concern must be removed in order to keep the block certified. Certified planting stock, including all components of budded or grafted plants, must be propagated from cuttings taken from G1, G2, or G3 grapevines.
What paperwork to look for when receiving certified grapevines? WSDA requires pre-notification for any out-of-state grapevine material! Out of state shipments need a Phytosanitary Certificate and a tag or stamp that shows verification that they come from a certification program. Certified grapes from within WA would not require a phytosanitary certificate, just a tag or stamp.
Phytosanitary Certificate example California Certified Stock Tag What is a Phytosanitary Certificate?
Clean plants won t always stay clean. They need attention! Regular scouting and strategic pest management are important to maintaining a clean vineyard. Removing infected vines helps stop the spread of virus in your and your neighbor s vineyard.
