In 1913 the town of Calitzdorp was granted municipal status and in 1974, the Calitzdorp Municipality applied for its own Coat of Arms. The Coat of Arms is displayed on two sign posts as you enter the town via R62 from Oudtshoorn and near the view point on the cement road. The signs are in desperate need of replacement and the artwork has unfortunately been lost. Andrew and Nell at the Calitzdorp Country House have volunteered to replace the signs, but they need one of our numerous very talented artists to recreate the Coat of Arms in a format that can be printed. gold medals at the 2017 Michelangelo Wine Awards. The very popular De Krans Premium Moscato Natural Sweet Perlé Wine 2017 was one of the six gold medal winners at the Vitis Vinifera Awards this year.

2 Media Release 8 Gold Medals for De Krans! De Krans Wine Cellar in Calitzdorp has done extremely well at two wine competitions in the past week, walking away with no less than six gold medals at the 2017 Vitis Vinifera Awards, as well as two gold medals at the 2017 Michelangelo Wine Awards. The very popular De Krans Premium Moscato Natural Sweet Perlé Wine 2017 was one of the six gold medal winners at the Vitis Vinifera Awards this year. This semi-sweet wine with a fizz has quickly become one of the best-selling wines from De Krans since its launch a few years ago. It serves as the perfect wine as an alternative to bubbly, the ideal food wine or just something nice to sip on at lunch (boasting a low alcohol of 8.5%). The wine has complex muscat, spicy and fruit flavours, which are surprisingly intense, especially on the aftertaste. In the fast-growing category of moscato and natural sweet wines, even prosecco, the De Krans Moscato has undoubtedly solidified its spot at the premium end. The second wine to be awarded gold at Vitis Vinifera was the De Krans Free Run Chenin Blanc 2017, which forms part of the Classic Varietal Range. This very drinkable Chenin Blanc has definitely more fruit than acidity while still presenting with the freshness a Chenin should have. The fruit salad flavours include passion fruit, guava and banana, with a hint of lime to add some balance. The Portuguese style range also once again fared very well, with both the Touriga Nacional 2016 and Tinta Roriz 2016 winning gold awards. The Touriga Nacional is a complex full-bodied wine with fruit, dark chocolate and a smooth finish. The Tinta Roriz shows more savoury spice and earthiness with complex flavours like coriander, vanilla and cassis. Both these wines pair well with red meat, especially venison. The two Garden Route Wines, made at De Krans, from grapes grown on the foothills of the Outeniqua mountains near George, the Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and the Garden Route Pinot Noir 2016 both won gold at Vitis Vinifera. The cooler climate and higher altitude vineyards create the perfect conditions to produce quality Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. What makes the Vitis Vinifera Awards unique is the fact that it embraces the phrase: For the people by the people. Wines are tasted blind by every day consumers, who make up the judging panel, with the requirement of having a certain level of professional wine background and/or experience. This competition focusses more on excellent quality wines sold at reasonable prices, instead of focusing on exclusive and high-end wines only. De Krans also won two gold medals at the 2017 Michelangelo Wine Awards for its Cape Vintage Reserve 2014 and Muscat de Frontignan 2017, solidifying the fact that De Krans Wines is much more than just a quality port-style producer, but it is also a producer of quality wines across the whole wine spectrum. 3 Media Release 10/10/2017 BOPLAAS: 2 DOUBLE GOLD AND 9 GOLD AT TOP SA AWARDS Boplaas Family Vineyards in Calitzdorp excelled in the two biggest wine competitions in South Africa, Veritas and Michelangelo, by winning two double gold and nine gold medals here. A Veritas 2017 double gold was awarded to the Boplaas Heritage Muscadel This prestigious, gold-coloured dessert wine was made from full-ripe Muscadel grapes, handpicked early in the morning from a 33 year-old vineyard. A Michelangelo 2017 double gold was awarded to the Boplaas Gamka 2015, a red blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Francesa and Shiraz. This outstanding wine recently scored 91/100 in a judging by Tim Atkin, the leading British Master of Wine. Three Veritas golds were awarded to the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2015 and 2013 (both SA Champion Ports at the SA Young Wine Show) and the Boplaas Cape Tawny (4½ stars in Platter s and Best SA Port at the CAPPA Challenge). Six gold medals were awarded to Boplaas at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirit Awards. Margaux Nel, Boplaas winemaker, is very proud of the gold medal for the Boplaas Touriga Nacional 2015 red wine, having done her MSc in Viticulture on the subject of this Portuguese cultivar at the University of Stellenbosch. With a distilling history going back to 1880 when Daniel Nel, great-great-grandfather of owner Carel Nel, exported brandy to London, Boplaas is also very proud of the gold medal for the Boplaas 20 Year Potstill Brandy (also a Platter s 5 star recipient) and the Boplaas Craft Gin. In addition, Boplaas won a Michelangelo gold medal for the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Made in a more elegant style, this port has the potential to age for more than 20 years. The other two golds were for the Boplaas Vintage Reserve Port 2013 and the world-class Boplaas Cape Tawny. The latter wine was made from Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barocca and aged for 10 years in old Portuguese oak barrels. Boplaas wines and spirits are available nationwide only at selected outlets due to their limited production volumes. 4 DUBBELGOUD EN 2 GOUES VIR DE KRANS BY VERITAS Kort op die hakke van vele onlangse toekennings, het De Krans pas nog n toekenning toegevoeg tot hul medaljes vir 2017, met die Cape Vintage Reserve 2014 wat Dubbelgoud verower het by die 2017 Veritas Wynskou. De Krans het ook weggestap met twee Goue medaljes vir onderskeidelik die Cape Tawny Limited Release NV en die Cape Vintage Reserve Hierdie spog-funksie, wat op Vrydag 6 Oktober plaasgevind het, was bygewoon deur sleutelspelers van beide die wyn- en mediabedryf. Die Cape Vintage Reserve 2014 was een van 1638 wyne wat vanjaar by hierdie kompetisie ingeskryf is. Slegs 71 Dubbelgoue en 193 Goue medaljes is toegeken. Die Veritas kompetisie is een van Suid-Afrika se oudste en mees gesaghebbende wynkompetisies, wat deur van die land se top wynkenners beoordeel is. Sommige panele het ook internasionale wyn beoordelaars ingesluit was sonder twyfel n uitsonderlike jaar vir De Krans, veral vir die veel-bekroonde 2014 Cape Vintage Reseve Port. In September vanjaar was hierdie port ook die wenner van n Goue medalje by die Michelangelo Internasionale Wyn en Spiritus Toekennings. Vroeër vanjaar is dit benoem as een van SA se Top 100 wyne en het dit ook n Dubbel-Platinum toekenning ontvang by die 2017 National Wine Challenge. Dié port was ook aangewys as die SA Kampioen Port by die 2014 SA Nasionale Jongwynskou. Wynmaker, Louis van der Riet, beskryf hierdie vlagskip port as n wyn met n donker pruim-kleur, met geure van rooibessies, kersies, donker sjokolade en viooltjies. Die port is volrond met n sagte, donker sjokolade ondertoon en n stewige struktuur, wat die wyn tot 30 jaar of langer kan laat verouder. FLIGHT FOR BIRDERS BIRD IDENTIFICATION & CONSERVATION COURSE 3 & 4 NOVEMBER 2017 'Flight for Birders' was developed to assist novices and experienced birdwatchers to become involved in bird-watching in a practical and sustainable way. Basic steps in the identification of birds will be highlighted and the identification of garden birds, water birds, birds of prey and more difficult species such as swallows, waders and 'little brown jobs' will be discussed systematically. The course is illustrated with more than 1,600 slides and drawings. Emphasis will be placed on the further development of the Cape Town region as a top birding destination. Important conservation issues will be discussed and details will be given on how ordinary birders could become involved in conservation actions.
