1 STRUZZIERO Azienda Vinicola Struzziero COMPANY The Azienda Vinicola Struzziero winery is located in the small municipality of Venticano, in the province of Avellino. Established in 1920 by Elisiario Struzziero, the company has always believed in the philosophy of quality, and has also made excellent use of its favorable position in the very center of the Taurasi production area. Here the grapes are hand-picked and subsequently crushed and vinified. This is followed, in the winery, by a careful selection of the products, and the bottling of the wines following criteria based on the search for quality which has always been the company s objective. The 26th March 1970 is the date that production of the Greco di Tufo and Taurasi Denominazione di Origine Controllata D.O.C. wines began. The person responsible for this project was the present owner, Giovanni Struzziero. The first signs of appreciation began to appear, mostly from abroad, especially the United States (The Wine Spectator New York: 94 points. The Italian Wine Competition San Francisco The Italian Wine Competition Chicago 1987). Struzziero s son Mario joined the company as an oenologist in 1989, and he continues to follow the process of selecting and controlling the production from vineyard to vinification to bottling. The commitment of the Struzziero family to the Denominazione di origine controllata e garantita D.O.C.G. acknowledgment is evident and of primary importance due to the role it played in the past. In 1994, production began of a Spumante Brut Metodo Classico D.O.C. Greco di Tufo sparkling wine. To date, the Azienda Vinicola Struzziero is the only company in Campania to produce this sparkling wine. In 1998, work was started on the restructuring and modernization of the whole production complex. All the installations were renewed and a completely computerized packaging line was introduced, with an hourly capacity of 3,000 bottles. A brand new barrel cellar was also built to house a new collection of barrels and casks. The Struzziero family s latest commitment is to investment in its vineyards: the winery has around 13 hectares of Fiano Roseto, Taurasi Villafosca and Greco Villagiulia vineyards. Struzziero Mario, owner and oenologist of the winery The company s latest efforts are aimed at increasing the typicality of its products and looking into ways of improving quality. 2 THE VINES Struzziero has Aglianico, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Falanghina, Merlot, Coda di Volpe, Piedirosso. Aglianico This grape was introduced by the Greeks. The name derives from "ellenici", another Italian name for Greeks. Though it is widespread in various Italian southern regions, the Aglianico vine produces grapes with amazingly different characteristics, depending on the zone of origin, soil composition and microclimate. The wine produced is of high quality. Greco di Tufo Greco is a very valued Campania vine with a great history. Grown all over the region, it is defined with different denominations, according to the various zones of origin, such as Greco di Tufo (Tufo Greek Tufo is a kind of stone). IRPINIA AREA Irpinia has always been a wine-growing land. The area owns some unique climatic characteristics ideal for viticulture. Aglianico, Fiano and Greco are the traditional grape varieties that produce the Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino, 2 top quality DOCG dry white wines and the Taurasi DOCG red wine made from the high quality Aglianico grapes. Those 3 denominations are the only DOCGs of Southern Italy. The Aglianico grape variety is cultivated on the hills bordering the Calore river, whereas the Fiano and Greco are cultivated on the slopes of the Sabado river. WHERE IS STRUZZIERO? Struzziero is situated in Avellino province, Irpinia area, in Campania region, south of Italy. Campania is a region in which the chief town is Naples and is well known thanks to the natural beauty of the Amalfi's coast facing the beautiful lands of Capri, Ischia and Procida. Its countryside is rich in history and since ancient times has been appreciated for its exceptional wines. After Piedmont and Tuscany, Campania is the region that produces the most number of D.O.C.G. (Guaranteed and Controlled Denomination of Origin). In fact here there are three DOCG with the finest reputations coming from the town of Avellino, on the Irpinia territory: Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Taurasi. Irpinia has always been a winegrowing land. This area has some unique climatic characteristic, ideal for viticulture. Aglianico, Fiano and Greco are the traditional grape varieties that produce the Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino, two top quality DOCG dry white wines, and the Taurasi DOCG red wine made from the high quality Aglianico grapes. Those three denomination are the only DOCGs of Southern Italy.
