We have secured a limited selection of South Africa s finest and rarest wines from two of the most prestigious wine auctions and we invite you to discover these rare gems with us. Under each wine there will be a rating from our group Sommelier Miguel Chan (MC) to guide you in your choices. Enjoy. The Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Auction was established in 1982 with the main aim being to innovate, benchmark and share knowledge in winemaking excellence. Limited edition bottlings are made exclusively for each year s auction by members of the Guild with production rarely exceeding 600 bottles. Most of the wines represent some of the finest examples of their kind in the world garnering exceptionally high scores from leading Sommeliers and International wine publications The Nederburg Auction was founded in 1975, inspired by two leading European wine auctions: Kloster Eberbach in Germany and Hospices de Beaune in France. South Africa s first Noble Late Harvest, Edelkeur was launched at this inaugural event. 18 ABINGDON WINE ESTATE Whilst the Cape is heralded as producing the finest wines in south Africa, we are enormously proud of the endeavours of a special boutique Estate on our doorstep. A winelist in Kwa-Zulu Natal would not be complete without Abingdon Wine Estate. The Estate is located in the picturesque Midlands, and has positioned itself as a serious single vineyard boutique wine producer in the geographical unit of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The farm was bought in 2000 by owners and winemakers Ian and Jane Smorthwaite, and the first vines were planted in At 1118m above sea level, Abingdon s wines are unofficially the highest altitude certified single vineyard estate wines in the country and the only certified single vineyards in the entire Kwa-Zulu Natal region. The cultivars planted range from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier to Chardonnay. The soils are Clovelly and Griffon and offer good drainage, which is most welcome, especially when rain shows itself in summer. The wines reflect the cool slopes upon which the cultivars are planted and the flavour nuances lean to the Old World. The uniqueness of this terroir can be tasted in the glass - crisp, fresh, elegant, with a keen minerality. Abingdon Blanc de Noir 2014 Region: Lions River - KZN Made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah grapes. A refreshingly dry summer wine, but with a lively acidity, full of red and black fruits. R290 Abingdon Chardonnay 2014 R290 Region: Lions River - KZN A delicate and lightly oaked Chardonnay with peaches and cream on the nose, followed by crisp citrus fruits on the palate. Abingdon Viognier 2014 Region: Lions River - KZN A typical cool climate and youthful Viognier with a perfumed floral nose of violets and an intense apricot and white peach character on the palate. 25 CHAMPAGNE CHAMPAGNE Champagne can only be produced within the region of Champagne, France. The primary grapes used in the production of Champagne are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. The appellation laws allow only grapes grown according to these rules and in specific areas to carry the name Champagne. Celebrate with Champagne - At the Beverly Hills we love a celebration! 26 CAP CLASSIQUE CAP CLASSIQUE BOTTLE FERMENTED SPARKLERS Whilst Champagne may be known as the most classic example of sparkling wine, in South African, we call it Cap Classique. In other countries it is also known as Espumante as in Portugal or Cava in Spain. 29 CHARDONNAY WHITE WINES Terroir and oak have always played an integral part in the wines from this noble varietal, from its origins in France to the wine regions of the Western Cape. The styles of Chardonnay are today so varied and exciting, and range from heavily wooded to unoaked. per bottle Glenelly Unoaked 2014 R190 Vibrant citrus flavours make a crisp unoaked Chardonnay reminiscent of Chablis. Edgebaston R420 This wine has an elegant minerality with lime-citrus, sourdough and cinnamon flavours. Pairs well with fish, particularly salmon. Abingdon 2014 R290 Region: Lions River - KZN A delicate and lightly oaked Chardonnay with peaches and cream on the nose, followed by crisp citrus fruits on the palate. Graham Beck Lonehill 2014 Renowned for its unique limestone-rich soils the Robertson region has earned a reputation for producing exceptional Chardonnay. R450 CHENIN BLANC The most widely planted variety in South African, in the past originally known as Steen. Chenin Blanc may have been one of the first varietals to be planted by Jan van Riebeek in Other theories suggest it was first grown in 1685 when it was brought in by the French Huguenots fleeing France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Today it forms the base for some outstanding white blends, plays solo as a single varietal, or makes excellent dessert wine. South African Chenins are gaining a big international reputation. 39 CABERNET SAUVIGNON RED WINES We feel that Cabernet Sauvignon is best expressed in the region of Stellenbosch. As one of the world s most recognized grape varieties it is grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. Despite its prominence in the industry, the grape is a relatively new variety and developed by chance, crossing Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in the late 17th Century.
