The most prized vineyard from the DRC estate is Romanee Conti (also the name of the winery), the original vineyard of the Estate. It is a monopole meaning DRC owns the entire vineyard. The entire vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir. The vines average over fifty years old. One interesting aspect is that DRC uses horses to avoid compacting the soil. Yields are quite low and it is said it takes three vines to produce one bottle of wine from the Romanee-Conti vineyard. Average production is 450 cases. For many, this is the purest expression of Pinot Noir in the world and perhaps the best wine made anywhere. 8 Vosne Romanee The central pearl of the Burgundian necklace. (G. Roupnel) The glory of Burgundy shines in the Cote-d Or (the Golden Hill). And this hill itself is a double gem. In the North, the Cote de Nuits producing red wines and in the South the Cote de Beaune producing white and red. The Cote is the district where great wines are produced. In includes the hill exposed eastward and South-East of the chain of hills with round ridges, modest and bare, which under the expressive name of Golden Hill, forms the farthest border of the Massif Central. Over this cliff, straight and cut up with transversal dells at the entrance of which wine-producing villages are gathered, an uninterrupted strip of land, 60 kilometers in length and 650 meters average width, spreads from Dijon to Chagny. The great vineyards are situated half way up the soft and ample slopes lit by the first sunrays. Over these regular spaces with a gravelly soil, not manured by the muddy alluvions, constituted by clay fragments and rich in iron ore, a relative stillness of the atmosphere prevails and favors the blooming of the vine and the ripeness of the grapes. And it is only on the generous slopes of this Cote, upon this sumptuous side which the mountain, with a shrug of its shoulder throws to the plain in a gesture of grand and listless grace that the vine-growers of this country reap the wines known amongst the first in the world. The plantation is constituted by an unrivaled plant, king of the Burgundian vines, the Pinot. Black or white, this vine covers, over the double Cote. The Cote de Beaune producing red and white wine and the Cote de Nuits producing red. The Cote de Nuits, surrounded in the North by the Cote Dijonnais, in the South by the Cote de Beaune, gives rich and full bodied wines of a robust toning. Rough and hard in their youth, they divest themselves and soften with age and, when years have ripened them, they shine bright, pure, soft, perfumed and delicious in all the splendor of a magnificent glory. There are five Grand Crus in the Village of Vosne Romanee, some of the most famous and expensive wines in the world. In alphabetical order they are: La Romanee 2.05 acres, 330 cases produced La Tache acres, 1,970 cases produced Richebourg acres, 2,600 cases produced Romanee-Conti 4.45 acres, 640 cases produced Romanee Saint-Vivant acres, 2,530 cases produced
