3 1.0 Introduction Welcome to New Zealand s premium collection of food and wine tourism experiences designed specifically for lovers of high quality and regionally distinctive wine and food. This year s collection features 52 different premium food and wine experiences around New Zealand with local tourism experts able to take you closer to the best tastes of their region. Read on and discover a variety of food and wine experiences that are pre-bookable and delicious! WINES... So fine In New Zealand, grapes are grown in a wide variety of climates and soils, allowing the production of a diverse range of styles. There are 10 key wine growing regions and over 580 vineyards throughout New Zealand, of which the majority are small boutique, family-owned vineyards. Northland New Zealand s oldest and northernmost wine region, Northland has warm, subtropical growing conditions. The boutique vineyards of this region produce ripe, well-rounded whites such as Chardonnay and substantial, savoury Cabernet Merlot blends. Auckland Although rich with winegrowing history, Auckland mostly serves as an administrative base for many of New Zealand s largest wine companies. As well as its main head-office role, the region also grows quality wines rich, ripe Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon; and mouth filling whites such as Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Recent attention has been focused on the acclaimed subregion of Waiheke Island, as well as emerging subregions such as Matakana. Waikato/Bay of Plenty The warm temperate countryside of this region produces a variety of flavoursome wines. Sprinkled across the warm, temperate Waikato and Bay of Plenty countryside, a small number of vineyards produce wines such as Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons, that boast complex, ripe flavours with moderate acidity. Gisborne The world s most easterly wine-growing region, Gisborne is the first to see the sun each day. The warm, coastal Gisborne region is renowned for its generous, highly approachable wines especially lush, softly mouth filling Chardonnays. 3

4 Hawke s Bay New Zealand s leading producer of red wines and second largest wine region in the country, Hawke s Bay has a long, rich heritage of fine wine production. Aided by a warm, maritime climate and varying landscape, the region excels with classic grapes such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and more recently, Syrah. Other Hawke s Bay white wine styles include weighty, oak aged Sauvignon Blanc with ripe tropical fruit and gentle herbaceous flavours; Gewurztraminer; Pinot Gris; Riesling; Chenin Blanc; and Viognier. Wairarapa (including Martinborough) A small wine region with a big reputation. Wairarapa combines the robustness of the warmer North Island regions with the fresh, aromatic intensity, typical of the cooler southern zones. The area is best known for its mouth filling, richly flavoured Pinot Noirs wines that have placed Martinborough on the world wine map. Nelson The picturesque valley vineyards of Nelson benefit from a sunny maritime climate. Nelson yields some of New Zealand s most freshly scented, intensely flavoured Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling, as well as vibrant, supple Pinot Noir. Marlborough New Zealand s largest wine region, Marlborough is particularly famous for its strikingly pungent Sauvignon Blanc. Abundant sunshine and cool nights also ensure vibrant complex flavours are displayed in the region s other white wines as well as its Pinot Noir. With 85% of the country s Sauvignon Blanc plantings, Marlborough is New Zealand s (some say the world s) Sauvignon Blanc capital. Canterbury (including Waipara) From the valleys to the plains, this region is particularly distinguished for its Riesling and Pinot Noir. The Waipara Valley and Canterbury Plains districts of this dry, southerly, cool climate region are acclaimed primarily for their scented, racy Rieslings and intensely flavoured Pinot Noirs. Central Otago The dramatic mountain valley vineyards of the world s most southerly wine region have excelled in recent years. In particular, the vibrant, cherry-like spicy flavour and velvety texture of Central Otago Pinot Noir has gained a strong following. 8 10.2 Alpine Pacific Tourism Discover the Alpine Pacific Triangle Touring Route, a 370km journey that links Hanmer Springs (New Zealand s alpine spa village), Waipara Valley (one of New Zealand s finest wine regions) and Kaikoura (famous for its marine mammal experiences). The trail is made up of over 40 businesses to be enjoyed as a self drive itinerary or as an organised tour. For more information visit and click on the Wine and Food tab. The agreeable climate and rich soils of the region are ideal for growing grapes, olives, nuts, vegetables and other produce. Combined with New Zealand lamb, beef, venison and catches from the sea, delectable treats await you in the many cafés and restaurants located throughout the region. Kaikoura, being an important fishing port, is a mecca for seafood lovers with ample fresh delicacies for all. Local specialties include grouper, cod, mussels, paua (abalone), and of course the town s namesake - Crayfish (lobster). Exciting and award-winning wines are produced from the burgeoning Waipara Valley and Kaikoura wineries. The free draining soils, hot summers and protection from cool winds produce outstanding vintages with unique and individual characteristics. Varieties for which the area is developing an excellent reputation are Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Many of the wineries and a local boutique brewery (based at Amberley) are open for tastings and cellar door sales, while some offer lunches and dinners in their boutique restaurants.
