Commentary Total shipments, volume and value increasing In the 12 months ended 2015, the volume of Australian wine exports increased by 3.6 per cent to 711 million litres, the highest it s been since The value of Australian wine exports increased by 3.9 per cent to A$1.85 billion¹ while the average value of total exports increased by 0.3 per cent to A$2.60 per litre. Australian wine was exported to 123 countries by 1,385 exporters, 35 more than the prior year. More exporters recorded volume growth compared to those in decline (890 in growth v 802² in decline). The number of products exported also grew, from 16,308 to a record 17,387, with the increase spread across a broad crosssection of companies and markets. Volumes increased in most price points, with exports at: below A$2.49 per litre up 4 per cent to 423 million litres; A$ up 4 per cent to 218 million litres; A$ up 5 per cent to 15 million litres; and above A$10.00 up 12 per cent to 18 million litres. The exception was at A$ per litre, where volumes fell by 4 per cent to 37 million litres. The strong growth at the higher price points contributed to the average value of bottled exports increasing by 4.7 per cent to A$4.87 per litre, the highest since 2005 (see figure 1). In contrast, the average value of bulk exports fell by the same rate to A$0.97 per litre. This was driven by a 19 per cent increase in bulk exports below A$1.00 per litre combined with an 11 per cent decline above A$1.00 per litre. Figure 1: Average Value of bottled and bulk wine exports 1 All references to value and average value per litre are in Free On Board (FOB) terms. 2 This includes exporters that exported in 12 month period in 2014 but not in 2015 hence they are not included in the 1385 that exported in

Commentary (continued) Exports to most regions increased, with volumes to: Europe up 3 per cent (up 12 million litres); Figure 2: Exports from the ten biggest exporters North East Asia up 17 per cent (10 million litres); North America up 2 per cent (4 million litres); and South East Asia up 14 per cent (2 million litres). The top five countries for Australian wine exports remained the UK, US, Canada, China and Germany with a combined volume share of 78 per cent. Exports increased to 71 countries, with the biggest volume increases to China (7 million litres), Italy (6 million litres), Canada (6 million litres), the UK (6 million litres), Germany (4 million litres), Japan (2 million litres) and Thailand (1 million litres). The key wine styles each recorded solid growth. Red table wine exports grew by 4 per cent to 396 million litres, white table wine increased by 2 per cent to 297 million litres and sparkling wine grew by 22 per cent to 14 million litres. Competitor analysis Australia is the fifth largest exporter of wine in the world behind Spain, Italy, France and Chile (see figure 2). Spain, after coming off a large 2013 crop, recorded significant volume growth in the last 12 months but the growth was mainly in low-priced bulk shipments at an average value of US$0.53 per litre. Australia and Italy were the only other countries among the top ten to record an increase in volume. Source: Global Trade Atlas Growth in higher price points Growth was achieved at above A$7.50 per litre for the third consecutive year. Volumes grew by 9 per cent to 33 million litres, value by 18 per cent to A$505 million and the average value by 9 per cent to a record A$15.37 per litre. While the segment accounts for 5 per cent of total export volume, the value share is much higher at 27 per cent. More than half the exports above A$7.50 per litre were destined for Asia, a quarter to North America and 16 per cent to Europe. Growth was strongest to Asia, up 13 per cent, compared to 3 per cent to North America and 1 per cent to Europe. The average value per litre for this price segment was also much higher in Asia at A$18.77 compared to A$12.51 in Europe and A$11.20 in North America. 6

Commentary (continued) UK and Germany driving growth in Europe Europe accounts for more than half the volume of Australian wine exports. Exports to the region are on the rise, up 3 per cent to 369 million litres valued at A$580 million. The UK and Germany accounted for most of this increase. United Kingdom Exports to the UK grew by 2 per cent to 251 million litres valued at A$371 million. Australia is ranked second behind Italy in total volume of wine exported to the UK. It should be noted that the UK is increasingly being used as a trading hub, with some Australian wine sent in bulk and bottled in the UK then shipped to other destinations in Europe, such as Ireland and Scandinavia. There was growth at the low, middle and high price points for Australian exports to the UK. Exports below A$2.49 per litre grew by 4 per cent to 216 million litres, at A$ by 8 per cent to 3.3 million litres and at above A$10.00 by a healthy 46 per cent to 1.2 million litres. An increase in the number of independent retailers (which generally stock a higher proportion of premium wines) and an increase in the listings of Australian regional wines in the ontrade are key contributors to the growth in exports above A$10. The growth at the higher end in the UK saw the average value of bottled exports to the UK increase by 5 per cent to A$4.13 per litre, the highest since 2008 for the. Germany Exports to Germany increased by 11 per cent to 37 million litres valued at A$48 million. Australia is the seventh biggest exporter of wine to Germany and both bulk and bottled wine saw growth. Bulk exports to Germany grew by 9 per cent to 31 million litres and bottled exports by 20 per cent to 6.1 million litres. The growth in bulk exports came at the expense of price, with the average value falling by 10 per cent to A$0.86 per litre. The growth above A$10 halted a six-year decline in this segment. While the volumes are relatively small, there were 246 Australian companies exporting wines at this price point and total value is A$22 million. 7

Commentary (continued) Growth to Canada pushes up volumes to North America North America accounts for a third of total Australian wine exports and the region is home to the second and third ranked markets for Australian wine. Total wine exports to North America increased by 2 per cent to 225 million litres valued at A$608 million but this was driven mostly by growth in the Canadian market. United States Total Australian exports to the US declined by 1 per cent to 164 million litres valued at A$421 million. While the total volume of Australian exports to the US declined, the number of exporters recording volume growth (169) exceeded those in decline (127) in a positive sign for the market. Furthermore, a handful of companies accounted for the majority of the volume decline. Excluding those exporters from the analysis, Australian wine exports increased by 17 per cent. Total wine imports to the US have also fallen, down 4 per cent to 1 billion litres in the year ended February With the exception of Italy, most major suppliers to the US recorded declines, including Chile (down 1.4 per cent), France (0.5 per cent), Argentina (down 25 per cent) and Spain (down 7 per cent). Australia is the second-ranked exporter to the US behind Italy. While Australian bulk wine exports increased by 4 per cent to 54 million litres, bottled exports declined by 4 per cent to 110 million litres. Within the bottled category, there were mixed results by price point. Bottled exports declined at below A$5 per litre by 3 per cent to 103 million litres, at A$ by 25 per cent to 3.7 million litres and above A$10 by 7 per cent to 1.5 million litres. The only segment in growth was A$ , up 1 per cent at to 2.5 million litres. More than 90 per cent of Australian exports to the US are below A$5 per litre. Canada Australian exports to Canada increased by 11 per cent to a record 61 million litres valued at A$186 million. The growth in volume was strongest below A$2.50 per litre, up 25 per cent to 30 million litres. Most of this is bulk wine and likely to bottled and labelled as cellared in Canada. According to Canadian Vintners Association, sales of these wines, which are generally imported wines, increased by 6 per cent to 88 million litres in the 12 months to December Australia was the major source of imported bulk wine in Canada. Bottled Australian exports increased by 1 per cent to 30 million litres with the growth coming at higher price points. Exports at A$ per grew by 5 per cent to 8.5 million litres, at A$ by 6 per cent to 2.7 million litres and at above A$10 by 7 per cent to 1.6 million litres. Consequently, the average value of bottled exports to Canada increased by 2 per cent to A$5.26 per litre, the highest in five years. 8

Commentary (continued) China and Japan boost Asia growth The strongest growth for Australian exports was to Asian markets. Exports to Asia grew by 16 per cent to 82 million litres valued at A$553 million. While China was the main contributor to the growth, there were also strong performances in Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, and the Philippines. China China continues to rebound after the austerity measures impeded growth in the previous 18 months. Exports to China increased by 20 per cent to 44 million litres valued at A$242 million. Bulk exports increased 77 per cent to 5 million litres (but still well below the peak of 29 million litres shipped in 2011) while bottled exports grew by 15 per cent to a record 39 million litres. Growth came at both the low and high ends of the price spectrum. Bottled exports below A$5 per litre grew by 25 per cent to 24 million litres while above A$7.50 per litre increased by 12 per cent to 7 million litres. China remains the number one destination for Australian exports priced at more than A$7.50 per litre. Japan Exports to Japan grew by 20 per cent to a record 11 million litres, an indication that Australian wine companies are starting to reap the benefits of the Japan Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA). Under JAEPA, the 15 per cent import tariff on Australian bottled wine will be eliminated within seven years. The first reduction of per cent on bottled wine occurred on 15 January 2015, and the second round of cuts came into effect on 1 April 2015, reducing the tariff on bottled Australian wine to 11.3 per cent. The tariff on bulk wine was immediately reduced to from 45 per litre to zero under JAEPA. Reflecting the zero per cent tariff, the strongest growth has come in bulk wine exports, up 414 per cent in the first three months of 2015 compared to the same period in However, there was also solid growth in bottled exports over the same period, with volumes up 11 per cent and growth in all price points. For example, exports at above A$10 per litre grew by 19 per cent. Other Asian markets Exports to Thailand increased by 47 per cent to a record 3.6 million litres valued at A$14 million. With bottled exports stable at 2.1 million litres, the growth was due to increased exports of wine in soft-packs and bulk containers. Soft-pack exports increased seven-fold to 770,000 litres while bulk wine exports tripled to 720,000 litres. This growth may have been assisted by the import duty on Australian wine finally reaching zero in 2015, after reducing by 4 per cent per annum since 2005 (a result of the free trade agreement between Australia and Thailand ratified a decade ago). The bulk wine may have been bottled as Australian wine or blended and labelled as fruit wine, which attracts a lower excise tax rate. Australia is the second-ranked exporter to Thailand behind South Africa. 9

Commentary (continued) Record volume and value was also achieved to Malaysia, with volume up 10 per cent to 3.2 million litres and value up 25 per cent to A$38 million on the back of a 14 per cent increase in average value to A$11.84 per litre. Virtually all wine was shipped in bottles. With such a high average value, it s unsurprising that 40 per cent of bottled exports to Malaysia were priced at above A$10 per litre. Australia is the number one exporter to Malaysia. Taiwan is another growing destination for Australian wine in Asia. The volume of exports increased by 33 per cent to 1.7 million litres, value grew by 66 per cent to A$15 million and the average value climbed by 25 per cent to A$8.55 per litre. More than 90 per cent of the growth was in red table wine. Australia is ranked fifth in Taiwan, behind France, Spain, Chile and Italy. Record exports to the Philippines were seen in the 12 months ended Volume increased by 22 per cent to 1.2 million litres and value grew by 19 per cent to A$5.6 million. The growth came equally from red and white table wine. 10

Notes & Definitions Export Approvals: Wine approved by the AGWA for export on specified dates. Exports reported in this document refer to the date wine is shipped and not the date of approval. Note that the A$ FOB value of wine reported in this document may differ from export values reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The divergence between the two values derives from differences between the AGWA and ABS in the method of converting the value of exports denominated in foreign currency to A$. In the case of Australia, the exporter makes the conversion when submitting wine for export approval while the ABS converts the value on the day of shipment, at the daily conversion rate. With the AGWA method, it is expected that some of the conversions will occur at hedged rates while this does not occur with the ABS method. When the Australian exchange rate is moving significantly the alternative methods will result in diverging valuations. Volumes reported by the AGWA and ABS differ only marginally due to the approval versus shipment basis of reporting as well as marginal differences in scope and definition. : Moving Annual Total - refers to the twelve months ending with the nominated month. : Is calculated as the percentage change in the for the immediate past 13 months compared to the preceding 13 months. Formula: = ((current - preceding )/preceding ) x 100 AUD: Australian dollars FOB: Free on board' value of the wine, where the point of valuation is where goods are placed on board the international carrier, at the border of the exporting country. The FOB value includes production and other costs up until placement on the international carrier but excludes international insurance and transport costs. Country: In most instances, this indicates where the wine is consumed. In some instances, it may be the country at which the wine is off-loaded for bottling and/or trans-shipment to the country of final consumption. 41

Notes & Definitions (continued) Still wine: Still wine in bottles, casks, flagons or bulk containers. Bulk: Wine shipped for repackaging elsewhere. This may involve containers with a capacity of 20 litres or more but will most often mean large shipping containers of size ranging between and litres. Cask or Soft packs: Plastic containers within cardboard outers usually carrying between 2 and 20 litres. Flagons: Glass containers holding 2 litres or more. Bottles: Glass containers holding less than 2 litres. Alternative Packaging: Includes: Flagon, Tetra-pak, PET and Aluminium Red Wine: Amounts reported may or may not include both dry red wine and rose White wine: Amounts reported may or may not include both dry and sweet white wine Fermented sparkling: Sparkling wine in which the effervescence is produced naturally through secondary fermentation in the bottle. 42
