5 FRENCH WHITE THE LOIRE VALLEY based around the longest river in France, the Loire valley is an enchanting place that has been largely untouched by time the wines are much the same as they were a century ago. With a focus on acidity these wines are meant for the table. The valley offers as diverse a selection as anywhere in the world and we have gathered a focused expression of the best each area has to offer. 6 FRENCH WHITE BURGUNDY perhaps the most sought after whites in all the world, the only grape is chardonnay, but nowhere else is there so much diversity in one grape. From Chablis to the Macon the differences are staggering but the grape remains the same. Chablis a place, not a grape (the grape is Chardonnay), dominated by a unique soil here known as kimmeridgian marl which is composed of limestone and sea fossils. While there are many grapes grown, Riesling is king. With plenty of lift and a range of sweetness levels, these are some of the most food-friendly wines in the world. Driven by red fruit and lifted florality, there are range of styles produced in the United States, some are more structured than others with a varying range of oak influence as well. The climate is cool and the wines are some of Italy s most noble and sought after. They are generally medium bodied, though there are a few unique styles of wines produced due to the influence of the lake. amarone made by the appassimento process, these grapes are dried for months.
