4 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / B 1/75CL Canon 1er Grand Cru St Emilion B 1/75CL La Fleur Petrus Pomerol CS 12/75CL Montrose 2nd Cru St. Estephe 1, , The 1982 is nowhere near the quality of some of the Montroses made afterwards (1989, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008), but it has aged better than expected having developed more complexity and richness than barrel samples suggested. Sweet kirsch, black currant, crushed rock, and floral notes are followed by a full-bodied, opulent, fleshy wine displaying no hard edges. It still possesses beautifully pure fruit as well as good body, but it should be consumed over the next 5-8 years. Robert Parker 92/ CS 6/150CL Leoville Barton 2nd Cru St.Julien 2, , CS 12/75CL Beychevelle 4th Cru St. Julien 2, , B 1/600CL Palmer 3rd Cru Margaux Imperial 3, , B 1/75CL Talbot 4th Cru St Julien B 1/75CL Leoville Poyferre 2nd cru St Julien - Scruffy Labels One of the superstar 1983s that is not beginning to crack up and decline, Leoville-Poyferre s effort exhibits a dark garnet color, a sweet nose of plum liqueur intermixed with liquorice, black currants, weedy tobacco, and herbes de Provence. The wine is round, seductive, with a certain degree of opulence, low acidity, gorgeous fruit, and a nice layered palate impression. It makes for quite a seductive style of wine. Robert Parker 91/ CS 12/75CL D'Issan 3rd Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL Montrose 2nd Cru St. Estephe CS 12/75CL Ducru Beaucaillou 2nd Cru St Julien 1, B 1/75CL Lafleur Du Roy Pomerol B 1/75CL Branaire Ducru 4th Cru St Julien - Poor Labels B 1/75CL Figeac 1er Grand Cru St Emilion B 1/75CL Lynch Bages 5th Cru Pauillac - Label Damage M 1/150CL Calon Segur 3rd Cru St Estephe B 1/75CL Leoville Las Cases 2nd Cru St Julien CS 12/75CL D'Angludet Margaux - Loose Labels (wrapped in cling film) CS 12/75CL Le Bon Pasteur Pomerol - Good but mixed levels, stained labs CS 12/75CL Canon La Gaffeliere Grand Cru St.emilion CS 12/75CL Pontet Canet 5th Cru Pauillac - Good but mixed levels B 1/150CL Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac CS 12/75CL Beychevelle 4th Cru St. Julien CS 12/75CL Montrose 2nd Cru St Estephe 1, B 1/75CL Lafleur Du Roy Pomerol B 1/75CL Clos Du Marquis St Julien B 1/75CL Pape Clement Pessac Leognan - Stained Labels B 1/75CL Cos D'estournel 2nd Cru St Estephe - Slight Label Damage B 1/75CL Haut Brion 1er Cru Pessac Leognan B 1/75CL Margaux 1er Cru Margaux The 1986 Margaux continues to be the most powerful, tannic, and muscular Margaux made in decades. One wonders if the 1928 or 1945 had as much power and depth as the 1986? The black/ruby/purple color reveals no sign of age. The reluctant nose offers up aromas of smoky, toasty new oak and black currants, as well as a few flowers. The wine is mammoth, with extraordinary extract, superb balance, and a frightfully tannic finish. This is a Margaux of immense stature, made in a masculine, full-bodied style that is in complete contrast to the It should prove nearly immortal in terms of aging potential, but will it have the awesome potential I first predicted? Robert Parker 96/ B 1/75CL Lafite Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac - Scruffy Label CS 12/75CL Chateau L Arrosee Saint-Emilion - One Raised Cork CS 12/75CL Ducru Beaucaillou 2nd Cru St Julien 1, , B 1/75CL Vieux Chateau Certan Pomerol B 1/75CL Lagrange A Pomerol B 1/75CL Palmer 3rd Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL D'Angludet Cru Bourgeois Margaux CS 12/75CL La Lagune 3rd Cru Ludon STATUS: = DUTY PAID, THESE WINES ARE LOCATED IN OUR CELLARS = DUTY SUSPENDED, THESE WINES ARE LOCATED IN BOND OR STILL LYING ABROAD Call (0) sales@nickollsandperks.co.uk - Price Include VAT where Marked () page no. 2

5 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / CS 12/75CL La Lagune 3rd Cru Ludon CS 12/75CL Cos D'estournel 2nd Cru St Estephe 1, , B 1/75CL Pavie Decesse 1er Cru St.emilion B 1/75CL Leoville Barton 2nd Cru St. Julien - Slight Label Damage B 1/75CL Canon 1er Grand Cru St.emilion Full colour, not overly mature, the nose is delicate and very elegant, very concentrated too. Soupe de poissons, meaty too. The palate is silky textured, slightly chalky, a very long inky finish, some spice, quite youthful. Really lovely wine. W J Gardener 95/ B 1/75CL Troplong Mondot Grand Cru Classe St. Emilion B 1/75CL Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac - Damp Affected Labels CS 12/75CL Cissac Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc B 12/75CL Chasse Spleen Moulis CS 12/75CL Branaire Ducru 4th Cru St Julien CS 12/75CL Leoville Barton 2nd Cru St. Julien 1, B 1/75CL Giscours 2nd Cru Margaux B 1/75CL Pichon Lalande 2nd Cru Pauillac This is slightly lighter in depth of colour than the Chateau Clinet 1990 tasted alongside. A touch of amber at the rim but not of any concern. Deep horse hair nose, edge of rusticity even sur maturity as per the vintage, ripe black fruits even pruney, though it doesn t inhibit the overall aromas which are very Medocaine, mature, classic cedar notes and an edge of orange. Nicely silky on the palate, with a good mid palate, ample red cherry and spice here too. It is definitely brighter red fruits than the Pomerol with a savoury element. White pepper on the finish. Fading rather quicker than the Clinet but certainly giving it a run early doors. Drink up. W J Gardener 93/ B 1/75CL Pape Clement Pessac Leognan This complex, dark garnet/plum-tinged wine reveals some bricking at the edge, and its beautiful, smoky, meaty nose exhibits notions of sweet currants, black cherries, and licorice. Medium to full-bodied and fleshy with low acidity, sweet tannin, and an expansive mouthfeel with no hard edges, it is a fully mature 1990 that should drink well for another decade. It is a tour de force in winemaking. The fruits phenomenal purity and denseness, as well as its overall balance is admirable in view of the massive, muscular personality of this huge, full-bodied wine oozing with extract. The nose is ripe and opulent with hints of wild mint that lend it a Pauillac-like allure. The palate is medium-bodied with cranberry; red cherry and cedar on the entry, a first wave of sweet fruit but then a more structured, masculine finish that is just beginning to mellow. Excellent. Neal Martin 94/ CS 12/75CL Potensac Cru Bourgeois Medoc B 1/75CL Margaux 1er Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL Phelan Segur Cru Bourgeois St. Estephe CS 12/75CL Lafon Rochet 5th Cru St. Estephe CS 12/75CL Calon Segur 3rd Cru St. Estephe CS 6/150CL Margaux 1er Cru Margaux 3, , B 1/75CL Potensac Cru Bourgeois Medoc B 1/75CL Citran Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc B 1/75CL Haut Bages Liberal 5th Cru Pauillac B 1/75CL Troplong Mondot Grand Cru Classe St. Emilion B 1/75CL Leoville Barton 2nd Cru St Julien - Bin soiled, good levels This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: Robert Parker 92/ B 1/75CL Pichon Baron 2nd Cru Pauillac B 1/75CL Lynch Bages 5th Cru Pauillac B 1/75CL Les Forts de Latour Pauillac B 1/75CL Palmer 3rd Cru Margaux B 1/600CL Cissac Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc B 1/75CL Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac This is an excellent Mouton-Rothschild that might warrant a higher score if it continues to improve. It has a "classic" Pauillac nose of graphite, pencil shavings and tobacco, later a whiff of a mahogany bureau in a stately home. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, quite austere tannins, but wonderful balance and the tension that the 2000 so badly needs. Very harmonious and youthful towards the finish. It actually reminds me of the 1986 in some ways. Superb. Tasted February Neal Martin 95/ CS 12/75CL Lynch Moussas 5th Cru Pauillac B 1/75CL Lafite Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac - Slight Label Scuff CS 12/75CL Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds Domaine Hubert De Montille CS 12/75CL Haut Brion 1er Cru Pessac Leognan 3, , The backward 1996 Haut-Brion was bottled in July, Even administrator Jean Delmas was surprised by how closed it was when I tasted it in January. Only 60% of the crop was utilized in the final blend, which was 50% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Cabernet Franc. Out of barrel, this wine exhibited far more forthcoming aromatics as well as a sweeter mid-palate than it revealed from bottle. I had expected it to be more forward, and thus slightly down-graded the wine, although I am thrilled to own it and follow what appears to be a slow evolution. It will be a potentially long-lived wine. The 1996 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, and a surprisingly tight bouquet. With aeration, notes of fresh tobacco, dried herbs, smoke, asphalt, and black fruits emerge... but reluctantly. It is tannic and medium-bodied, with outstanding purity and a layered, multidimensional style. However, the finish contains abundant tannin, suggesting that this wine needs 5-8 years of cellaring. 7 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / B 1/75CL Poujeaux Cru Bourgeois Moulis B 1/75CL La Mondotte St. Emilion A stupendous effort, and unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage, La Mondottes 1997 boasts a saturated purple color as well as an explosive nose of blackberries, violets, minerals, and sweet toasty oak. Huge and massive, yet gorgeously proportioned, it possesses an unctuous texture with no hard edges. Seductive and easy to drink, it should be consumed between now and Robert Parker 94/ B 1/75CL Meyney Cru Bourgeois St. Estephe B 1/75CL Grand Pontet Grand Cru Classe St Emilion B 1/75CL La Gaffeliere 1er Grand Cru St Emilion B 1/75CL Leoville Barton 2nd Cru St Julien B 1/75CL La Conseillante Pomerol Tasted at the La Conseillante vertical at Chez Bruce. The first bottle is oxidized, the second better with an intense bouquet with hints of mint, coca and mocha, showing more Cabernet Franc character than recent bottles, with impressive delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, quite fresh and vibrant with grainy tannins, good acidity and persistency with a meaty, savoury, Cabernet Franc driven finish. Very fine and it improves with time, with an edgy citrus finish and delicious dark chocolate/espresso decorating the aftertaste. I have had better bottles of the 98, but this is still a lovely Pomerol that should enter its plateau in the next couple of years. Tasted December Neal Martin 93+/100 Nice deep Plum, still youthfull, this has blossomed on the nose with dark plummy fruit, plenty of pepper and tapenade, grilled and heady. The palate is well proportionned with plenty of chewy fruit, good zip and dusty tannins, now mostly integrated. This is just a point, a lovely emotive Claret with plenty of finesse as expected from this great property. Medium length, very nice balance. Will drink well for another 5 years or so. Now W J Gardener 93/ B 1/75CL Angelus 1er Grand Cru St. Emilion The bouquet is well defined and much fresher and more complex than the Here we have lovely bright vivacious red-berried fruit with oyster shell and a scent that reminds me of walking round an old stately home. Very fine definition and the oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins: very silky in the mouth, concentrated but with a great deal of tension and poise. Long and persistent towards the finish, this is a great Angelus that will repay extended cellaring. Neal Martin 96/ B 1/75CL Latour 1er Cru Pauillac CS 12/75CL Smith Haut Lafite Pessac Leognan CS 12/75CL Rauzan Segla 2nd Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL Haut Bailly Pessac Leognan CS 12/75CL Monbousquet Grand Cru St. Emilion CS 12/75CL Troplong Mondot Grand Cru Classe St. Emilion A fabulous effort, this sleeper of the vintage may turn out to be the finest Troplong-Mondot since the The black/purple-colored 1998 exhibits floral, blueberry, blackberry, licorice, vanillin, and truffle-like aromas (or is it charcoal/graphite?). Dense, full-bodied, and pure, yet extremely fresh and elegant, this beautifully focused wine needs 3-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: Robert Parker 93/ CS 12/75CL Troplong Mondot Grand Cru Classe St. Emilion CS 6/75CL Tertre Roteboeuf Grand Cru St. Emilion CS 12/75CL Montrose 1, , B 1/1800CL Pavie Macquin Grand Cru Classe St. Emilion 2, , CS 12/75CL Latour 1er Cru Pauillac 4, , B 1/75CL Malartic Lagravieres Pessac Leognan CS 3/150CL Chasse Spleen Moulis CS 12/75CL Haut Marbuzet CS 12/75CL Prieure Lichine 4th Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL Ferriere 3rd Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL Pavie Macquin Grand Cru Classe St Emilion B 1/75CL Lafite Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac - US Strip Label The 1999 Lafite Rothschild sports an engraved "1999" on the bottle along with an eclipse to mark that significant historical event of August, It is a quintessential offering from Lafite Rothschild. This prodigious wine is both elegant and intensely flavored, and almost diaphanous in its layers that unfold with no heaviness. An opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by a complex bouquet of lead pencil, graphite, cedar, creme de cassis, toast, and vanilla. It is medium-bodied, with extravagant layers of richness yet little weight, and a finish that is all sweetness, ripeness, and harmony. This extraordinary Lafite increasingly appears to be a modern day clone of the majestic A mere one-third of the crop made it into the grand vin! This complexity is followed by a fleshy, elegant, silky wine to drink over the next 5-6 years. Haut-Brion can be among the trickiest Bordeaux to taste young, often needing a full decade before the extraordinary complexity that marks this terroir begins to emerge. I was thrilled to see how well both the second wine, Bahans Haut-Brion, and Haut-Brion performed in this tasting, and both scores are slight upgrades. Full-bodied, opulent, and viscous, it exhibits plenty of power as well as moderate tannin. Robert Parker 90-92/ CS 12/75CL Dufort Vivens 2nd Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL Belair 1er Grand Cru St.emilion CS 12/75CL Beausejour Becot 1er Grand Cru St.emilion CS 12/75CL Alter Ego De Palmer Margaux CS 24/37.5CL D'armailhac 5th Cru Pauillac CS 12/75CL Rauzan Segla 2nd Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL Chateau Croix de Labrie St Emilion - OWC CS 12/75CL Brane Cantenac 2nd Cru Margaux - OWC CS 12/75CL Le Dome St Emilion CS 6/75CL Lynch Bages 5th Cru Pauillac CS 12/75CL Monbousquet Grand Cru St. Emilion CS 12/75CL Leoville Barton 2nd Cru St.Julien 1, This is a behemoth dense, highly extracted, very tannic, broodingly backward, with a dense purple color and very little evolution since it was bottled 8 years ago. Wonderfully sweet cedar and fruitcake notes are intermixed with hints of creme de cassis, licorice, and earthy forest floor. It is full-bodied and tannic, with everything in place, but like so many wines that come from Leoville Barton, it makes a mockery of many modern-day consumers wanting a wine for immediate gratification. Those who bought it should continue to exercise patience and be proud to own a wonderful classic with five decades of longevity ahead of it. Robert Parker 95+/ CS 12/75CL Cos d'estournel 2nd Cru St Estephe 1, , Showing some lightening at the edges as well as some amber, this is the least impressive of the greatest vintages for Cos d Estournel between 2000 and It is an outstanding wine, but it is closer to maturity and lacking the concentration, texture, and overall compelling aromatics of more recent vintages. The wine displays roasted herbs intermixed with licorice, incense, black cherry, and black currant fruit. Medium-bodied, rather than full, elegant, with some spicy tannins and a nice sweet finish, compared to the other top classified growths, this wine is on a much faster evolutionary track and can be drunk now and over the next 15 or more years. Robert Parker 91/ CS 6/75CL La Mondotte St. Emilion 1, , CS 12/75CL Lynch Bages 5th Cru Pauillac 1, , CS 6/75CL La Mondotte St. Emilion 1, , In two tastings this garagiste wine performed as if it were one of the wines of the vintage. Proprietor Stefan von Neipperg continues to lavish abundant attention on La Mondotte (as he does with all his estates), and the 2000 (80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc) boasts an inky/blue/purple color in addition to gorgeous aromas of graphite, caramel, toast, blackberries, and creme de cassis. A floral component also emerges as the wine sits in the glass. Extremely dense, full-bodied, and built for another twenty years of cellaring, I thought it would be close to full maturity, but it appears to need another 4-5 years of bottle age. It should age effortlessly for 2-3 decades. Situated within the Libourne city limits, this vineyard possesses some of the oldest vines (50 years) of St.- Emilion. Made from a blend of 87% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the light-styled 2003 is soft and forward, yet possesses this property s hallmark elegance. Exhibiting a deep ruby/purple hue along with a sweet nose of blueberries, licorice, and flowers, it is all about finesse, balance, and purity. The 2005, a blend of 70% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, was fashioned from yields of 33 hectoliters per hectare. This concentrated wine possesses a gorgeous bouquet of smoke, black currant liqueur, lead pencil shavings, cedar, and Asian spices. In the mouth, it displays a chocolaty richness, a beautiful texture, an expansive, multilayered mouthfeel, and a 45-second finish. 10 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / CS 12/75CL Leoville Poyferre 2nd Cru St. Julien Although I still prefer the 2003, the 2005 Leoville Poyferre is a gorgeously opulent, approachable wine that is far less massive and austere than its two siblings. The most seductive, approachable, and charming of the three Leovilles, it exhibits a dense purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of mocha, black chocolate, creme de cassis, licorice, and toasty oak. Full-bodied with gorgeous upfront fruit in addition to impressive levels of melted, well-integrated tannin, it should be at its finest between Robert Parker 93/ CS 12/75CL Pichon Lalande 2nd Cru Pauillac - Ex Chateau CS 12/75CL Vieux Chateau Certan Pomerol 1, , CS 12/75CL Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac 4, , B 1/75CL Aney Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc This wine has developed quite alot of tertiary flavours since last I tasted it 12 months ago. There is a lovely Medocaine nose here, with orange zest, clove and black fruits, it charms equally on the palate. There is plenty of silk and form, good freshness still, this is at its prime now but will be good for several years yet. Nice austere edge, which adds character to the seductive side of the wine. W J Gardener 88/ B 1/75CL Le Grand Verdus Grand Reserve B 1/75CL Sociando Mallet Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc B 1/75CL Pavie Macquin Grand Cru Classe St Emilion From a superbly situated on St.-Emilion s plateau, 38-acre vineyard planted on primarily limestone and clay, this 2006 is meant for long-term aging. A combination of 80% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a backward, brawny, muscular, long distance runner. Consumers lacking patience are advised to steer clear of this wine. Its dense purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, sweet cassis, pen ink, and charcoal. This powerful, dense, concentrated wine possesses high tannins and lots of structure. One of the more backward offerings from the right bank in 2006, it will not be close to drinkability for 8-10 years. Anticipated maturity: Robert Parker 92+/ B 1/75CL Ducru Beaucaillou 2nd Cru St Julien B 1/75CL L'Evangile Pomerol CS 6/75CL Beauregard Pomerol CS 12/75CL Aney Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc CS 12/75CL Tronquoy Lalande Cru Bourgeois St Estephe CS 12/75CL Les Carmes Haut Brion Pessac Leognan CS 12/75CL Du Tertre 5th Cru Margaux CS 12/75CL Leoville Poyferre 2nd Cru St. Julien Beautiful, vibrant, black raspberry and cassis fruit, fresh acidity, medium to full body, superb ripeness, melted tannins, and a long, savory, expansive mouthfeel are found in this top-notch St.-Julien. Friendlier than the more backward, tannic 2005 Leoville-Poyferre, the 2006 should be at its finest between Robert Parker 91-93/ CS 12/75CL Carruades De Lafite Pauillac 1, , Robert Parker CS 6/75CL Lafite Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac 2, , One of the fabulous surprises, although I had suggested last year that it could jump in quality, of my tastings, the 2006 Lafite Rothschild is a great, great wine made from a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. When I tasted it from barrel, it reminded me of their successful 1988, but it is dramatically superior to that vintage. Frankly, it may turn out to be as good as the 2005, which in all of Bordeaux is a far greater vintage than Lafite s severe selection process (42% made it into the grand vin) resulted in a full-bodied wine boasting an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, truffles, lead pencil shavings, and sensationally sweet, ripe black currant and cedar notes. A wine of extraordinary intensity, texture, and depth with silky tannins as well as awesome concentration, this has turned out to be a remarkable Lafite Rothschild that should be drinkable much earlier than the 2005, but age for three decades. 11 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / B 1/75CL Langoa Barton 3rd Cru St. Julien Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. An attractive bouquet of blackberry, raspberry leaf, wild hedgerow and a whiff of chalk dust: good definition with well-integrated oak. The palate is well balanced with ripe tannins, just a dash of white pepper, cedar and a touch of tobacco towards the finish that displays very good fruit concentration and length for the vintage. An inky/blue/purple color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of acacia flowers, blueberries, blackberry liqueur, graphite, and smoke. As the wine sits in the glass, it blossoms beautifully to display a raspberry-infused, rich personality with tremendous opulence, a layered mouthfeel, elegance, superb purity, sweet tannins, and low acidity. Drink this beauty now and over the next years. Robert Parker 93/ CS 12/75CL Calon Segur 3rd Cru St. Estephe CS 6/75CL Ausone 1er Grand Cru St.Emilion 1, , B 1/75CL Domaine du Grand Ormeau - AOC Lalande de Pomerol B 1/75CL Les Hauts De Lynch Moussas Haut-Medoc The colour is quite deep with a maturing edge, nice and leathery and meaty on the nose, this is now expressive with a figgy perfumed edge. The palate is still quite tight with delicate fruits and a structure in harmony, the length is good. There is texture too. Its a well made claret reflecting the leaner elegant style of the 2008 vintage. Drink now W J Gardener 87/ B 1/75CL Martinens Cru Bourgeois Margaux Medium plum, still a youthful colour but with garnet at the heart. The nose is quite open and medium full with raspberry coulis and a cedery edge, certainly elegant. The palate is medium weight and sleek, with an austere edge. The fruit is ample too, evident in a long fine finish. This is a lighter style of claret; a hallmark of the vintage. It is balanced and an ideal compliment to red meats and savoury cuisine. This is classic Bordeaux with the charm associated with a Grand Cru Classe as well as the commune. W J Gardener 90/ B 1/75CL Latour A Pomerol CS 24/37.5CL Aney Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc CS 12/75CL Beaumont Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc CS 6/75CL Clos L'Eglise Pomerol CS 12/75CL Les Hauts De Pontet Pauillac CS 12/75CL Larcis Ducasse Grand Cru Classe St Emilion For decades to come, the 2008 Larcis Ducasse will undoubtedly be compared with this estate s immortal I did not expect such a blockbuster effort from this St.-Emilion property, but low yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare and a harvest that lasted from October 9th to October 20th produced a wine with the highest alcohol level, 14.2%, ever achieved. Consultants Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt seemed to have coaxed just about everything one could from this extraordinary terroir. The final blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc has resulted in an opaque purple-colored wine exhibiting a sweet, almost intoxicating perfume of blue, red, and black fruits intermixed with notions of spring flowers, forest floor, and damp earth. Full-bodied and opulent with an outrageously pure, textured mouthfeel, sweet tannin, and slightly more acidity than the monster 2005, this is a tour de force as well as one of the most compelling wines of the vintage. Given the global economic crisis, I suspect the price should be one-third to one-half of the In short, that means readers should buy, buy, buy. The 2008 should be approachable after bottling (because of the sweetness of the tannins as well as the extraordinary ripe fruit), and evolve for years. Robert Parker 95-97/ CS 12/75CL Montrose 2nd Cru St Estephe An undeniably great Montrose, after some time in wood, the 2008 should achieve the heights of the 2003, 1990, and Stylistically different from those wines, the 2008 harvest took place between September 29 and October 15, and yields were a modest 44 hectoliters per hectare. This superb terroir west of the Gironde River possesses a remarkable amount of gravel in the soil base. Sixty percent of the production made it into the 2008 Montrose, and the person responsible for so many great Haut-Brions, Jean-Bernard Delmas, came out of retirement to take charge over the last several vintages for proprietor Martin Bouygues. An inky/purple color is accompanied by sweet, pure aromas of black fruits and spice. This fullbodied wine exhibits superb concentration, sweet tannin, and a multilayered, textured, full-bodied mouthfeel with no hard edges. The sweetness of the tannin, the extraordinary purity of fruit, and the intense aromatics suggest a year of great ripeness. The difference between the 2008 and the 2003, 1990, or 1989 is the freshness and purity of expression. This should be a long-lived wine (35+ years), yet it will drink surprisingly well at a young age. For some reason, it comes across like an even more pure example of the 1989, even though there is nothing essentially comparable between the two harvests. 12 BORDEAUX RED LIST PRICE SALE PRICE / CS 12/75CL Rauzan Segla 2nd Cru Margaux Lovely intense concentration on the nose, very brambly, with hints of loganberries. The whole feel of this wine is classy, the plate is elegant and brooding, lovely silky texture, excellent balance, very good this year. W J Gardener 91-93/ CS 6/75CL Les Forts De Latour Pauillac CS 12/75CL Cos d'estournel 2nd Cru St Estephe Tasted ex-château and single blind in Southwold. This bottle of Cos d Estournel 2008 is not as scintillating as the one tasted at the property, but it remains a great performer. Compared to its peers it is more forward on the nose: quite meaty and savoury, some expressive, slightly herbaceous Cabernet Franc here that I have not noticed previously. The palate is medium-bodied with good extraction: fleshy and supple in the mouth, a lot of creamy new oak and perhaps just lacking the mineralité on the finish that I discerned on other bottles. Very fine indeed although it will improve with bottle age. Tasted January Neal Martin 93+/ CS 6/75CL Carruades De Lafite Pauillac CS 2/75CL Le Pin Pomerol - OWC 2bts 1, , CS 6/75CL Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru Pauillac 2, , CS 6/75CL Ausone 1er Grand Cru St.Emilion 2, , Possibly the "wine of the vintage," the 2008 boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as a glorious perfume of spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, camphor, truffles and crushed rocks. With great fruit on the attack and mid-palate, a medium to full-bodied, multidimensional mouthfeel and a skyscraper-like finish, this prodigious effort over-delivers, even for this phenomenal terroir. Give it 5-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following years. Robert Parker 98/ CS 12/75CL Latour 1er Cru Pauillac 3, , An extraordinary wine, the classic 2008 Latour (13.5% natural alcohol) is composed of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc (40% of the production made it into the grand vin). Its dense purple color is followed by hints of espresso roast, cassis, burning embers, truffles and graphite. Rich with full-bodied power, beautiful purity and graciousness allied to a voluminous, savory, broad mouthfeel, this beauty will be drinkable in 4-5 years and will keep for three decades. Black currants galore intermixed with some crushed rock, licorice, tobacco leaf and spice box are all present in this deep ruby/purple-colored, medium to full-bodied wine. The tannins are sweet and extra fleshy, and the wine ideal for drinking over the next decade. Robert Parker 88/ B 1/75CL Lilian Ladouys Cru Bourgeois Saint Estephe Elegant, with loads of black currant fruit, cherries and dusty, loamy soil notes as well as hints of tobacco leaf, spice box and cedar, it is a medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, fleshy wine that should drink nicely for years. This is the best wine I have ever tasted from this property, which has gone through many changes and frequent listless, uninspiring performances. The change to a better class of St.-Estephe was started by the late Vincent Mulliez, who passed away tragically last year, but who got things started by reducing yields, cleaning up the place, eliminating the TCA that had tainted so many wines in the past, and going with a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The result is the best wine they have ever made, or at least the finest I have ever tasted from them. Robert Parker 90/ B 1/75CL Teyssier Grand Cru St Emilion B 1/75CL Sociando Mallet Cru Bourgeois Haut Medoc B 1/75CL Grand Corbin Despagne Grand Cru St Emilion This is one of the few 2009s that performed less impressively from bottle than from barrel. (In most cases, as great as they were from barrel, the wines were even more profound from bottle.) This wine seems to be very much in the style of a 2005, with very high levels of worrisome tannin, a dense purple color and some real meat and concentration, but the tannins are austere and astringent. Neal Martin 91-93/ CS 12/75CL Clos Des Jacobins Grand Cru Classe Saint Emilion The blend for the 2009 is mostly Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc, but hit over 14.5% natural alcohol. This is a big, chewy wine made under the guidance of Hubert de Bouard. Good grip on the finish: this is an excellent Kirwan.
