1 g{x ZÜtÑxä Çx November 2016 SHW Monthly meetings are held on the third of the month starting at 7pm, upstairs at the Turn Verein Hall located at 3349 J Street in Midtown, Sacramento. For more information on SHW membership, meetings and activities, visit: Join us on Facebook!!! Inside This Issue Presidents Message Information Corner Page 2 Page 3 Annual Holiday Page 4 Silent Auction Page 5 Newsletter for the Sacramento Home Winemakers November Meeting Highlights November Sacramento Home Winemakers Program 7:00 P.M. November 16, 2016 Turn Verein, Sacramento Please join with us for our final educational program meeting of the year. This meeting is also our annual meeting and we will be electing our officers for This month is the evaluation of dessert, fruit, and sparkling wines. David Dart of d Art Wines in Lodi will be joining us as our evaluator. David is a former SHW member and thus a home winemaker, and has also judged our Jubilee Competition wines. He also comes to us with a knowledge of the making of port wines and will devote a portion of his time to this process. This year we have opened up the evaluation to your dessert, fruit, and sparkling wines. Please bring 2 bottles of your wine and bring them to our cellarmaster Henry who will be at the bar. Also, please download our new Evaluation Form from our website before next week, fill it out, and bring it to the meeting. We have found over the years that the evaluation feedback you receive is enhanced by the knowledge that the evaluator is given about your winemaking intent, the grapes, and your winemaking process, including the challenges. So, dive into your winemaking log and jot down the basics on this new form. Don t worry; it s only half a page. Calendar of Events Information Corner Page 7 Back Page As always, remember to bring TWO wine glass and wine to share. The doors of Turn Verein are open at 6:30 pm; just go directly upstairs to our meeting room. Remember to help clean up after the meeting, and, drink responsibly.
2 Page 2 President s Message If you missed the Harvest Dinner at Club Pheasant, you missed a great time! To those of you who took the time and effort to turn out for the event, the Club thanks you. Without your participation, the event wouldn t happen. And of course, the Club needs a strong leader who is willing to reach out to various venues and secure the space and design the menu. That leader was our own Sue Sommersett. Thank you, Sue! You did a great job and the food and fun was just what we d expect to celebrate the harvest while we gather to enjoy the wonderful benefits we experience through our Club membership. And the wines that members brought were outstanding! It was awesome! There were a lot of new winemakers and members in attendance; that tells me the membership of the Club is alive and well. To all of you new members, I ve had the most awesome experience with SHW and I look forward to many years of participation in Club activities. So, when you feel like the education is too much and you wonder if you re ever going to make award winning wine, stick with it, absorb the knowledge, attend classes and events, talk to other members about their wine making experiences and it will all come together. And most of all, hang on to your passion! The year is winding down super-fast. We ve got the November General meeting and then the Holiday Dinner in December. After that, time to start thinking about what wine you ll make in 2017 and how much you ll expand your winery. Another suggestion for this year s new members; go to as many General meetings next year as you can for two reasons; First, you ll have a lot of fun socializing with others, we re all here to make wine. Second, the educational aspect is something you won t find anywhere else so take advantage of it. You ll be on the path to award-winning wine in no time. November s General meeting is also the election meeting. The slate of nominees is in this newsletter and other nominations can be made from the floor during the meeting. If you re sitting on the fence, wondering if you have the leadership desire to serve the membership, you have till then to decide to get off the fence and run for office. After all, it is an election year! Finally, I want to thank those that have given their time to the Club this year. There has been so much that s gone on from Winemaking 201 to the Harvest Dinner. We ve had the State Fair, the Jubilee and group buys for grapes. There s members who coordinate equipment rentals and have done repairs. The volunteers who pour at general meetings and the folks that help with hospitality room set up, putting out snacks, water pitchers, dump buckets, chairs and tables. You ve all done so much to make this a fun Club to be a member. It s what helps to fuel my passion for winemaking. Hope to see you at the November meeting and if I don t, have a Happy Thanksgiving!
